School teacher Judy Winters sets out to solve the mystery surrounding her only living relative’s murder. Back on the farm where Aunt Louise grew up, Judy encounters Hart Wingate, a young man renting the adjoining farm who helps with farm chores. When Judy learns that her boyfriend, Graham, had been secretly visiting Louise, Judy takes the opportunity to move away from him for the summer and think over the situation.
Judy loves her teaching job, but is intrigued by her heritage in the farmstead and particularly the old house, but whether to sell or stay, she has yet to decide.
Midnight visitors, a job offer, new friends, along with one special old one—Carranza, the opinionated cat—all figure into Judy’s dilemma.
Meanwhile, Judy learns that a former friend of Louise’s father, Bryce, lost a treasure of gold somewhere on the farm. As Judy and Hart look for clues to the cause of Louise’s death and Bryce’s missing treasure they develop a close friendship. Judy breaks off her relationship with Graham, who doesn’t take the news very well.
As Judy explores the farmhouse, she finds and follows clues in Louise’s mother’s diary to unearth the buried treasure. But was it the treasure that might have been behind Louise’s murder?

Book 1 in the buried treasure series. This is the story of Judy Winters who inherits a farm when her aunt dies. It soon becomes clear something sinister is going on and perhaps her aunt didn't die of natural causes.
This was a lovely little murder mystery story. The story was interesting and the mystery was good. The ending was lovely too and I'm interested in reading more of the series. I loved the romance between Judy and Hart too. This was an easy read story but had plenty of drama to keep me reading.
I really liked Judy and Hart too. They complimented each other so well.
Lisa J. Lickel in her new book, “The Last Bequest” Book One in the Buried Treasure Mysteries series published by MuseItUp Publishing takes us into the life of Judy Winters.

I am not sure, I certainly cannot prove it, but I think that Lisa J. Lickel is somehow related to Agatha Christie. A potential murder, two romances, well, almost two romances you read the book you’ll see what I mean, finding your potential and a cat, ”The Last Bequest” has it all. Judy Winters has a job but she is unfulfilled. She moves out to her late Aunt’s farm and does work that fulfills her, that’s what I mean by finding your potential, just working fills your time, doing what you were made for fills your potential. There is a mystery surrounding her Aunt’s death. There is a mystery about gold being somewhere hidden on the farm land and there is the mystery of who else is looking for it and that the two mysteries are linked. “The Last Bequest” is a lot of fun. Ms. Lickel knows how to make endearing characters that we want to succeed so we read faster to help them along. I liked this book a lot and look forward to the next book in this series.

My Review: This is one of those nice mysteries with fun characters and nice romance. If it hadn’t been so hot here in Southern California the past month, I would have loved to curl up in front of the fire place with a cup of hot cocoa.
This story was enjoyable on many levels. One of the things I really enjoyed was the author allowed the reader to solve the mystery with the protagonist. Judy was an intriguing character with her ability to read people. Early in the book it was kind of creepy but it was also evident that she could read everyone. The author did a great job with the male characters in this story. I loved Hart and his bravado, especially when it came to mishaps in the kitchen.
There is also some very fun humor in this story. I don’t want to give anything away, but it was great to laugh at some of the antics that took place in the story.
This appears to be a book two in a series, but I didn’t feel lost, this story definitely stands on its own.

Loved this book! Just when I thought I had things figured out, I really didn't. That seems to happen to me a lot. Very interesting plot, but never a dull moment. I like when certain characters keep the reader guessing throughout the story. Are they to good guy or the bad guy? This is what keeps me reading. I have to find out! I love the characters. They become your friend, too as you read. You can't help but like them and care about them. Good book. I would recommend it to anyone. Read it first though, since it's number one in a series!
