Sometimes the first bite is all people need before becoming so addicted that they can’t stop themselves from craving more. Even if it leads them to their own undoing.
Raised by a ruthless slaver to be one of the best assassins in the shifter world, the only one Tatum knew he could count on and trust was his twin brother. The fact that they’ve joined with a cast of Hawks hasn’t changed that, either. While their new allies might seem nice enough, Tatum found out the hard way that kind words are, more often than not, just a nice façade to hide the true ugliness underneath. So he vows to never let his guard down or let anybody close...at least until he stumbles across a certain Spider shifter. One who may be small, but has as many emotional scars as Tatum.
After being accepted informally as part of the feline coalition, Baxley still doesn’t feel safe. He lives every day in fear that his past will come back and finish him off. The only time he is able to breathe freely is when Tatum is around. Yet Baxley knows that he can never truly love the other man, for fear of putting Tatum in danger.
Will Baxley be able to turn to Tatum? What’s more, will Tatum be willing to help? Or will Baxley lose the little bit of happiness he has in his life?
Stephani Hecht is a happily married mother of two. Born and raised in Michigan, she loves all things about the state, from the frigid winters to the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. Go Wings! You can usually find her snuggled up to her laptop, creating her next book or gorging on caffeine at her favorite coffee shop.
When she’s not running around like crazy, trying to get her kids to their various activities, she’s currently working on numerous projects. In the coming months, she has several books coming out with eXtasy Books in both The Lost Shifter Series and Drone Vampire Chronicles, plus a few additional projects that are still in the development stages.
I loved the combination of the powerful hawk and the tiny spider. Unique combination. I loved the title of the book. I didn’t mind the exteme sappiness. The battle with various types of spider shifters and scorpions was very enjoyable. And yes, finally a story with a spider shifter!
After reading tatum is a hawk twin I had to go back and check Shane's Fury to see if these were the twins Riley seduced and ruined Shane's book. Good news, tatum is not one of the twins that tag-teamed Riley. Riley does however seem to play a large part in this book. (Go away Riley, haven't you ruined enough books by now?) but actually he's not so bad here.
Still can't remember Tatum. I remember her on the first Scream Movie, played my rose McGowan, but she died (spoiler, a garage door ate her cause her hips wider than she thought. Delusional woman)
Then T and Spider talk about first time they met and what they said without repeating it so I have no idea what happened when they first met. I hate flashbacks but I think their first meeting should have been a little prologue for the memory impaired readers
Well crap, is t's twin interesed in North's brother or this issac guy? Please Stephani don't make it a ménage.
What happened to Riley's twin? Forget his name. And where was Brent? Hard to imagine Daniel going into battle without Brent. And hard to imagine Brent not being cocky so he must have been shunned and sent away?
The story was good. I liked both I the characters. It was simple and sweet with a sprinkle of sappy sparkles. But it fit my mood perfectly and I really enjoyed it.
Tatum is one of the hawk-shifter assassin twins. He and his brother, Ackley, were sold into slavery and raised to be ruthless since birth. Baxley is a spider shifter. Small, scared, and scarred by the abuse he suffered at the hands of his hive (especially his hive master) Baxley continues to live in fear even though he has been granted sanctuary by Mitchell and the feline coalition. Tatum and Mitchell fall in love but Baxley's past and secrets come back to haunt him and threaten all that they hold dear.
This installment was okay. I enjoyed Baxley's character. Ever since his first appearance, I was hoping to read his story. Tatum was a little harder to like at first. Eventually, he grew on me as he warmed up by being around Baxley so much. Honestly, I like this series well enough but the characters are getting to be a blur. There are so many of them, I feel like I need an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of all the shifters, their animal type, their mate, whether they have any lost or recovered siblings, their extended family, any physical impairments, possible mental disorders, quirks, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Bottom-line: an interesting sequel but I'm losing the wind in my sails for this series as the cast of characters goes beyond what I'm able to easily track in my limited head space.
Quick, guess the lost shifter story: Mistreated guy finds he can be loved. Another mistreated, lonely killing machine shifter finds he's capable of love. Neither thinks he's good for the other, both start with avoidance but they've been watching each other for a while thinking the other couldn't possibly love them.
There is a brother involved who won't approve of the relationship if he knew.
The weaker one is hurt and the other proclaims his undying love at the side of the first's hospital bed.
Then they are together, there's a short battle to kill the person who hurt the weak shifter before which the strong one vows to keep his mate safe by killing the beast who hurt the man.
As always, there's a scene where Shane gets excited about killing (and we're told once again how misleadingly adorable he looks). There is a moment that is rather ethically dubious. One of the MCs narrowly avoids being killed but is completely fine at the end.
Can't figure it out? Why ever not? Yeah, this is like a bunch of others in the series, which are like umpteen other shifter books out there, but I enjoy them. They're short and sometimes I need a sweet little snack like a Fun Size Snickers in book form.
If only the author would stop saying, "I'm not for sure." I believe in you, really. I'm sure you exist. :)
Issues specific to this story: tarantulas aren't that poisonous actually.
They didn't worry about any innocents, even though they knew Baxley's mom was a good person and hadn't been able to escape permanently. There could have been others. In fact, they saw men trapped in the pit and the MC didn't make sure that .
I wish for once the strong MC was seriously injured rather than just almost. It would be so much more realistic. Who am I kidding. This is a shifter true mate book. There's nothing remotely realistic about it.
Finally! Finally! Finally! A spider shifter! Something out of the norm and unusual. Of course I have friends on social media who will shudder and cringe but I think it's awesome and I was excited to get Baxley's story. 'When Tatum Got Bit by the Spider' is the nineteenth installment in the 'Lost Shifter' series and I am not bored yet. How could I be? Spider, hello?
It was hard to decide whether my heart ached more for Baxley or Tatum. Baxley was abused and terrorized by his own family for being a runt and Tatum was sold into slavery by his own parents. Tatum and his twin brother, Ackley, were raised to be assassins and Baxley is just lucky he made it through childhood. Watching these two abused and damaged men find love almost brought a tear to my eye. When Baxley's hive threatens to destroy HQ and all the felines and allies in it if they don't surrender Baxley, well shock is a mild term for Baxley's response when the coalition tells the Spiders to go to hell. He can't believe that the coalition is willing to fight for him and Tatum is just as stunned. These two men have never experienced love and loyalty to this degree.
I so enjoyed this addition to the series and the ending finale battle with various types of spider shifters and scorpions was insanely fun. I've said it before and I'll continue to say it, I'm looking forward to the next book in this exciting series.

I love Stephani Hecht’s books. When it comes to giving me some much needed escape from my everyday life, Ms. Hecht’s fast-paced, interesting reads fit the bill for me time and time again.
I thought both heroes, Will and Tatum, were unique and addictive men to read about. At first glance, they seem to be polar opposites of each other. Tatum is a cold blooded assassin who doesn’t trust easily. The only affection he has for another person is for his twin brother, who is as equally as dangerous as Tatum is. So Tatum is surprised by the pull of attraction and deep affection he feels for the spider shifter, Will. Will is shy and sweet and nothing like the rough and hardened Tatum. But as the two men start to get to know each other something extraordinary happens…they start to find things in common and begin to feel a genuine friendship, attraction and affection for each other. I thought the chemistry between the two men was sizzling hot and it kept me fascinated throughout the entire story.
Also, the action and continuing fight between good vs. evil kept me rooting for Will, Tatum and the rest of the clan. There are plenty of adventure, action and romance in When Tatum Got Bit by a Spider to keep fans of Ms. Hecht’s books and of the Lost Shifter series will love this newest book in the series. Although this book could probably be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend reading all of the Lost Shifter books. Not only will you love each and every character, you’ll get wrapped up in their lives as well. Highly Recommended!
Feels harsh to mark this a DNF it's more down to finding more absorbing books than any huge fault, and it wallowing on my 'current-reading' list gathering virtual dust.
The series clearly has it's fans, so good for it, but I rather suspect it's one of those 'read one and you've read them all' type series. If you enjoy the style well this is book 19, your book pile has just multiplied ;)
For me the characterisation is too thin. The big bad (hot) guy all introspective about how bad-arse he is and how everyone fears him, and yet people are shown talking even joking with him, it doesn't mesh. I never bought into the characters, didn't bond to any enough to make reading on imperative. Also the shifter element never seemed that powerful and it was the curiosity over the Spider shifter that persuaded me to buy.
It's lightweight, in-offense, I may yet finish it one day.
I haven't read one in this series for a while, I think the break was good, since I really enjoyed this one.
Poor little Baxley, finally safe and has a hot, sexy, scary, assassin shifter mate Tatum. The past comes back to haunt him and of course bombs explode, blood flows and and I'm hoping Tatum's brother Ackley gets a mate soon.
Baxley and Tatum were an enjoyable mated, shifters, pair. I liked them. The storyline isn't complex, but easy and comical. In general, good enough. To be sincere I'm more interested in Tatum's twin brother Ackley.
I love Stephani's shifter books, but I'm getting kind of sick of every protagonist lately being a victim of violent sexual abuse. Can we move on from that, please?
This review is for all of the Lost Shifters, Wayne County Wolves, and Assassin's Loyalty books since they are all interconnected and I read them back-to-back pretty much nonstop over a 10 day period. If I have anything to say about a particular book I'll add it under this bulk review. First, I'd like to mention these are more like novellas than books but they have the same underlying theme and pretty much continue where the last left off but with a different couple.
Everything starts out with the Lost Shifters. To summarize there was a war between the feline shifters and the raven shifters. 20 years or so before the first book there was an all out slaughter in which hundreds of feline homes were attacked and burned down all of the occupants believed to be killed. Turns out that the babies and toddlers that were assumed lost were not. They were hidden within the human foster care system for the most part. I won't say how because that'd be a big spoiler. In addition to foster care some kids were sold into slavery and that's where the whole assassin thing comes in. A couple of the main characters marry into the wolf pack so that's where those books come in as well.
Pros: Since the books are so short there are no long drawn out boring details or general angst. There's usually only one sex scene although it's normally long as hell. Which makes the fact some people shelved these as erotica confusing. I liked the world building and even though there were times I think a little more info might have been nice it never detracted from the story or left me confused. Most of the relationships were a sort of love at first sight thing. Or maybe lust or obsession? Despite this the shifters all seem adamant that's not a thing that happens. There wasn't one character I didn't like. My favorite character was Shane and he must have been the author's as well since he got a few extra books and a side series Shane's Chronicles. There's no big end battle or anything but the last book Baily's 9th Life does pretty much tie things up nicely. I think if I'd been reading the series when they were released I'd be a bit miffed because that book didn't come out until a few years later if you weren't reading the assassins books. Also, these books all have some really funny moments and/or dialog.
Cons: The last several books didn't appear to have been edited at all. If if wasn't for the fact that I was so invested in the overall story arc I would have quit reading them. Things like sent instead of scent and too instead of to they instead of them and random wrong words completely. There were also a couple of times that things were said/thought almost verbatim in different parts of a book as if the author forgot she'd already put that info in there already. At the start of the series, they state that all feline shifters are bisexual but at some point the author must have forgotten that detail because suddenly there are gay shifters and homophobia and all this hate. Which brings me to my next con, the themes of the different books started to repeat. Suddenly all these shifters had been thrown out of their previous pack or coalition or human home for being gay. And throughout this huge series of books there was only one straight couple. Like not even a straight friend or whatever. Even the females were all lesbians. It was just kinda unrealistic especially with the whole gay hate thing going on. Usually there's at least a few couples or friends or something on the periphery in gay romances especially in a world this huge. Which brings me to my final con, I had a hard time remembering who was who and what there story was after awhile especially if they weren't mentioned much in previous books. I wish there had been some sort of glossary to review.
Despite the cons, I would still recommend these books. All-in-all I really enjoyed them and was dreading the end although the editing in the last few books really had me also looking forward to the end if I'm being honest.
This book takes lack of proof reading and editing to an entire new level. Beside typos, grammatical errors, mismatched names and missing quotation marks and other punctuation errors, there are a lot of phrases which either don't make sense like: "If you hate me, then why are you always so us his children or hismouth. "I'm nice to me?" (with 3 quotation marks) and a few which are hilarious like: "Are you his feet."Well, yeh... that is, if you don't mind." (Again 3 quotation marks and totally out of context) and some which are a mixture of both, like: Tatum ordered:," Get those pants to cup Baxley's face. Tatum seemed to be off. Now!" Also all characters, which are flat, seem to remain in human shape 99.9% of the book, though they are referred to as Hawks, felines and spiders, etc. The plot has potential but the execution is so poor that is rather funny. I over rated this book because it was so ridiculous that I actually had some fun reading it and even more fun showing the editing problems to others and seeing their reactions!
The story is about Tatum, a hawk shifter, Ackley twin brother and assassin, and Baxley, a spider shifter. Tatum has been feeling off lately and he has no idea because he is not feeling the thrill of killing like he use to. When thinking deep in his mind the answer to that question lead to one small spider shifter name Baxley. Baxley has been living with the coalition for awhile now has been accepted and now have some friends, but Baxley is hiding a secret that might put all of his new friends and family in danger. Will Tatum be there to protect when his past comes back to bite him or will be Baxley be taken away before he has a chance to be in a relationship with Tatum.
We knew in the begin that this two will be a couple when they meet the first time in A Very Shaney Valentine Day, which happen to be another one of my favorite of this series. So it came as no surprise when Tatum made his move and want to be in a relationship with him. Baxley was thrill to be with the one that he know that will be his mate but he is scary because he fear that once Tatum knew the truth of his past then he might not want him anymore and be kick out of his new home. I feel so bad for Baxely when we get to hear his past that if I was a character in this book I would with guns load a big flamethrower and I myself will kill all his family and the master, who happen to be his stepfather, myself.
However there were a lot of loops and question in this story that made be not give it a higher rating. For example, what type of spider is Baxley, cause from what is know of his story he might be the last of his kind because the Hive, meaning home, where his biological father is from were all wipe out from the master. Also when Baxley bite Tatum, when they were having sex which is a little spoiler for all you people out there, no venom came from his bite so what does that mean. There were a few more loop but not wanted to give a way anymore spoiler I'll leave it at that.
Overall, it was a nice book to read and look like we might get some new character in the near future by the looks of it.
Shane has officially turned into the matchmaker and fairy godmother of the series.
Do all shifters wear black? The coalition uniform is black, the Ravens wear black, now Spiders apparently, too?
One thing that always annoys me is when a person about to is thinking about how they will miss their friends. Dude! You’ll be dead. Incapable of missing anyone ever again.
This entire story is a mix of some of the previous books. Mostly Shane’s first one plus Dominic’s. Plus a mash-up of all the abuse cases. As such it’s a really silly story with silly, overdrawn characters. Hell if I know why I liked it so much. Must be hitting some powerful buttons for me.
To be clear: this wasn’t that good. I just happened to enjoy it. Go figure.
So just was waiting for Baxley's story. He is such a little cutie. I enjoyed the whole of the book. There was drama but it wasn't too bad. I thought Tatum was a wonderful partner for this little guy. Baxley needs someone to take care of him.
I was anxiously awaiting the history of this spider so sweet and in need of affection. Stephani never disappoints and created another story full of love. But as always, leaves me wanting to know much more about these shifters lost.
B is a small spider shifter that was hiding out at the coalition headquarters, his mate turns out to be one half of the assassin twin hawk duo T who has lost some of bloodlust
The only reason it didn't get a 4 star rating was Length, I adore theses stories, but they are too short . And I loved the combination of Tatum and Baxley. Too cute xx
