Assassins #5

Blue Lines

Rate this book
Opposites do more than just attract in Toni Aleo’s latest Nashville Assassins novel about a very bad boy and the good girl he can’t resist.

The instant Piper Allen sees Erik Titov, she wants him—wants his rock-hard body, sure, but the strength and mystery that lies behind that superstar hockey jock demeanor, too. So when he sidles up to her at a bar and slinks his arm around her waist, she’s lost. What follows is the wildest night of her life . . . followed by inevitable heartbreak the next morning. And then, a few weeks later, a very big surprise: two blue lines on a pregnancy test.

Only a check to the head could make Erik fall for a nice girl like Piper. But since their crazy-sexy night together, he’s been trying to forget about her alluring body by falling into bed with every woman in Nashville, and it’s not working. So when Piper shows up at his house with a baby-bomb to drop, it doesn’t take much for Erik to suggest the nuclear option: marriage. While it’s supposed to be all for show, the second they say “I do,” the ice between them starts to melt into sizzling steam.

Includes a special message from the editor, as well as excerpts from these Loveswept titles: Taking Shots, Trying to Score, and Empty Net.

5 ASSASSINS STARS.

description

I have been waiting for this book for the last 382 days more specifically 33,004,800 seconds or if you are really interested it has been 9168 long hours, am I getting boring? Ok Lets round it up, its been around about 54 weeks of waiting for the fourth book in what has become one of my all time favourite series. Why this author or this series you may ask? Well in short I have come to love the characters and everything Assassins. Toni Aleo and her ice hockey romance stories took my British book heart starting with book one 'Taking shots' and the delicious hero, Shea Adler and my heart hasn't been given back just yet. I have no qualms about admitting I completely adore this series, I never want it to end. Now that my gushing introduction is over I'd better give you my 'Blue Lines' book thoughts, read on readers ...

description
What's it all about?
Piper Allen has been in love with Erik Titov for as long as her heart can remember. Piper is looking for a forever love, and Erik is forever looking for his next bed buddy. When one night of unadulterated pleasure takes them both by surprise they walk away from each other both unaware that their lives would never be the same. But when one heart is yearning to be loved and cherished and the other heart doesn't know if it can ever truly love, it becomes a tale of taking risks, giving your all and the possibility of learning how to fall in love.
description
What did I love?
These books are intended to be read as a complete series, the characters and lives are all mapped out in the authors wonderful ability to build love, romance, trials and life's mishaps. I have loved the Assassins series from when I first started the series last year, with each book Toni Aleo brings something a little different and keeps the characters fresh and interesting. Blue Lines is probably one of the more testier of subjects to read about, since these characters definitely don't have the easy road to happiness. But I more than appreciated this authors ongoing fabulous story telling. Personally I found Blue lines was tougher than the others in that there was less reprieve and added chance for the characters to develop. In my experience in past books of the series it has been the heroine that has been hard to love and the hero that took centre stage for my book love, but here we have a bit of a surprising role reversal, Erik Titov is a hero who needs to accomplish a mountain of redemption, but don't worry too much I often like my male characters to have a element of arsehole. Erik is a prisoner to his abusive and troubling childhood his insecurities and fears mean the only thing he can commit to is a one night stand so evidently he has some work to do if he plans on making a change for good. I liked him, in fact I would go as far as to say that I loved him I found the dual point of view enabled me to empathise with his difficulties and I was cheering for him to grab his chance at a perfect ending. Piper Allen is a treasure, I loved her feisty nature and I was glad when she finally stood up to her overbearing family. She showed strength and a fabulous ability to love against all odds. This book has all the elements that make me sit up and take notice; steamy bedroom action, heart throb hero, strong gorgeous heroine, a well developed story line and added drama and emotion to sustain the interest levels. I did miss the hockey side of the story telling here, the book was a continual ride and I thought I may not get the answer that my book heart wanted, but overall I was hooked on this romantic journey and I truly love this favourite series of mine.

description

Final thoughts ...
I'm hoping, praying, dare I say begging that I don't have to wait as long for the next book in the series. I can't say much more about my love for all things Assassins, except to say if you like a sports related romance with drama and steam served on the side then do not delay go grab it readers enjoy ... Kisses.

Piper has been in love with her sister’s brother-in-law, Assassin’s player Erik Titov for a long time. She’s waited for him to notice her, but he hasn’t. One night changes everything for Piper. He sees her in a club, he takes her home. One night of passion. One night together. Then it’s all over. At least she thinks it is... until a few weeks later when she sees two little blue lines on a pregnancy test that will change her life forever.

Erik knows the type of person he is. He is a man whore. He doesn’t do relationships and he doesn’t do love. He knows he shouldn’t have went there with Piper, but for that one night, he couldn’t help himself. He felt things for her and he can’t get their time together out of his head. He knows he’s not able to be with a good girl like that, so he decides to go the opposite direction and take his status as man whore to a whole other level. This puts him in a bad place with his hockey team. Ellie Adler is not happy with Erik being all over the tabloids with different women, it gives a poor image to the team.

Piper knows she needs to tell Erik what's going on, but she waits and waits... when he finds out she’s pregnant after their one night together, he freaks. He doesn’t know what to do. Already in deep with his hockey team, his only option is to marry her. She will know up front that it’s a ‘fake marriage’ so his hockey team and family will at least think he tried to give it a go. A ‘fake marriage’ is the last thing Piper wants with Erik, but she loves him. She would pretty much do anything he asked.

When they’re together, it’s good, it’s bad, and it’s ugly at times. Piper finds it hard to be around Erik, the man she loves, and not be with him. It’s not easy for Erik either. He’s been trying for months and months to get Piper out of his head, now he has to see her every day.

 photo d446c7a9-a245-4336-9fa9-3abba7a9d18f_zpsa99c6023.jpg

Will Piper and Erik be able to convincingly pull off this charade? Will Piper be able to convince Erik to give her and their baby a real shot? Will Erik ever believe he will not repeat his father's sins and be able to open his heart? You’ll have to read to find out!

LOVED the dual pov, getting inside Erik’s head made you understand him more. Even though he was an asshole for a good part of the book, I still adored him. Erik has seen so much and been through so much abuse in his life, that he’s afraid to be with anyone. Afraid to love anyone or be loved. When you get his whole story, you’ll understand. I love how Piper never ever gave up on Erik. She saw the man he could be deep down. Erik just has to realize he’s not his father and his past doesn’t define him.
“You can’t help me, Piper. I can’t be helped. You’d run the other way if you knew the demons I have from my past.”

“No, I wouldn’t, Erik. I would stand beside you.”

Piper is a fun and sweet girl. Not an annoying heroine at all so YAY for that! She is indecisive about a lot of things, but not about her love for Erik. Piper wants to prove to Erik that he deserves her love, a family, and everything. She wants to be the one to give it to him.

 photo 55671c44-4379-499c-820e-fd2f9b93afbd_zps539e57d3.jpg

Catching up with Tate, Audrey, and the rest of the gang was wonderful. They brought a little comic relief to Piper and Erik’s emotional story.
“Shea is a beast, Lucas, you know that. He is the Chuck Norris of baby-making and life; you don’t mess with Shea.”

The ending had me in happy tears. Such a heartwarming series! Sweet, funny, steamy, and just an all-around great read! I can’t wait for more from the Assassins!

P.S. Toni- if you ever read this... I want a Phillip book BAD!!!

He spent an unforgettable night with Piper but decided he needed to forget her.

He is Eric Titov, a young ice hockey star and experienced man-whore... He loves the ladies, they love him; he's living his famed life to the full with the whole country as his witness.

There is no way he is father material, in his opinion, how could he be? Oh Eric??? What lengths will he go to with the situation he finds himself in??? And what about Piper???? Oh, Piper

Piper is a girl with a dream, a dream of love and happiness. Will she succeed in her dream??? Or will her world and desires be crushed???

This is a lovely story of never giving up hope, moving on from your past and trusting your inner heart; most of all it's about unrequited love, my heart broke and fluttered throughout for Piper....

There was lots of drama...

It's beautiful and romantic and made my heart swell....
I loved playful Eric the best ♥

There are some SMOKING HOT SEXY TIMES!!!!

Can Eric give up all the females in the world for one???

He told her things he'd never shared before.....

He comes across as heartless.... But is he???

I loved it but just one little think irked me a little....
Eric's motivation for not wanting to be with Piper was honest to the character but, for me, the way he behaved became very slightly tiresome.Having said that I enjoyed it very much, it was like a lovely comfortable romantic blanket that I was able to bask in.

It gave me that book satisfaction feeling, in a big way, by the end.

This was my first experience of a Toni Aleo book and it definitely will not be my last. I loved how we got so many interesting characters, an extended family of relations and friends, all important to each other... And even though I had not met these characters before, they did not bore me once. I think if you've been with this series from the start then catching up with all your heroes and heroines would be book magic.

I would highly recommend this to lovers of all things romantic and unrequited.... ♥ Go, swoon and enjoy!!

My reaction on completion of this love story.....

Well that was lovely!!

I have met a whole new bunch of book boyfriends friends.

♥ BR with my bestie Barb

DNF - Can't stomach anymore of this first class PIG and one of the biggest doormats on the planet. Hate his fucking guts actually.

“Erik, you don’t get it. It is a big deal because I say it is, understand? I say your behavior is just wrong. Three girls have said the baby they had was yours and two others have made claims that you also are the father of their child.”

Erik rolled his eyes. “All of them were proven wrong through DNA tests...What other girl said I got her pregnant? Not that it matters, because I always wrap my stuff up.”

Well, not always, but that had been almost six months ago. It wasn’t his greatest decision, but that night with his brother’s sister-in-law was one for the books and thankfully nothing came from that, either. Too much happened in that room, and he was glad to bury his face between the legs of the many females who followed..."

The h...
"Piper would never forget the moment she first met and fell in love with Erik Titov. It was at a family gathering almost two years ago. She also would never forget the amazing night they’d spent together almost six months ago to the day. But more than anything, she would never, ever forget the phone call she’d received from him telling her that that evening was just a mistake and should never have happened."

He only gets much much worse after this disgusting start to the story...

3.5 I'm-scared-to-love-you Stars

Blue lines is a very well taylored and well written read.

I found the book a little difficult to love at the beginning because of Eric ,I wasn't really his biggest fan. It's true like most of my friends and I found his behaviour at the beginning a bit asshole-ish ? but I think that's the whole point of the story, the progressiveness of his character from someone you wouldn't never root for to someone you come to love.Even though it was a CONSTANT tug-of-war with him,all the way to the end.

Overall would definitely recommend this book if your a fan of angsty-pregnancy reads. :)

4.5 Frustratingly Beautiful Stars!

Blue Lines is book four in the Assassins hockey team series.

Erik and Piper finally gave into their attraction six months ago and had a night that neither of them will forget. The morning after though, Erik walks out of her life. He doesn't want a wife or kids. He loves his life the way it is. He loves hockey and all of the women.

My feelings for Erik through a good portion of this book...

And some of the things that come of his mouth, you just want to tell him to

By the end though, he won me over..

He's not perfect, he doesn't always say the right thing, but when it mattered, he came through for Piper.

Piper has loved Erik from the first time she saw him, but with Erik and his man-whore ways, she had given up on anything ever happening between them.

Piper is so sweet and nice and was heartbroken when he left. She knows that he is so much more than the man he protrays and she could love him if he would just let her. She knows she could make him happy. Erik knew from the first time he laid eyes on Piper that she was a forever kind of girl and deserved so much more than he could ever give her. He is a broken man and doesn't think it is possible for him to ever have something as good as Piper.

Life has thrown them a curveball and is forcing them into a situation where they have to be together. Erik's way of life is tarnishing the family-oriented image that the Assassins hockey team protrays. He is given the choice to either clean up his act or he won't be playing hockey for anyone in the future.

There are so many more things I would love to write about this book, but I don't want to give anything away. Erik and Piper's story was brought out so many emotions, the perfect recipe for a wonderful book. I have loved all of he Assassins books. I am forever a fan of Toni Aleo!! Read this series!

I already knew what I was going to find in this book. A womanizer is not my thing, and a good-girl/weak female character is not my thing either. But even with this, I was totally excited about reading this book for everything that happened in the third one between Piper and Erik. Now I'm kind of disappointed about this story.

description

First, Erik is a completely jerk. An asshole. A fucking dickhead. I know he has a lot of problems with his past, I know he didn’t have a good childhood, I know all of this, but I really didn’t expect this I-just-not-good-enough line was that repetitive. Like 90% of the book is about how broken is Erik and how he can’t love Piper, and blah, blah, blah… all the time is the same, since the beginning to the end, when, finally, he sees the light. I mean, yeah, drama is cool, but I finished this book feeling that Erik was just a weak character that only was looking for excuses to not be in a real relationship. The male character was weak and shallow and annoying. The best part is the end, when he finally changes (abrutly in my opinion, but it's OK).

Now, Piper… I like her 90% of the time. The other 10% I was like, girl, what is wrong with you? Why you’re in love with that man? You can do so much better! She’s such a cute and kind girl who makes a really bad decision when go home with that jackass. She’s having a bad time with her family because her lack of stability and I’d wish the author go deeper in this topic, but that was another shallow thing.

description

What I liked: The sex. The flashback was really cute and romantic and was one of the few moments when I liked Erik; and the sex in the present was hot, I really enjoyed reading it. I appreciated how Toni didn’t use the sex card since the beginning, she waited ‘til the characters try to “fix” a little bit the relationship, and that was good. And even when I didn’t like Erik and think Piper was kind of stupid, I liked the relationship's growth, and the book was enjoyable and good to spend the time.

What I hated: Besides the male character, I hated his inability to say sorry. Yeah. This man made mistake after mistake and never apologize in the correct form (at least for me). He treated Piper like shit for 6 months and never says he’s sorry. I didn’t like that.

My favorite scene: Piper destroying Erik’s things. SO. FREAKING. COOL.

description

My I-fucking-hate-this scene: the team in the dresser. Man, I know why I totally disliked Lucas. That’s scene was just not OK. I mean, I know men think this way, but really, I don’t want to read about it. Yuck.

Existential doubt:

I remember that Erik wanted to sleep with Harper, Piper’s twin. So was very strange to read he was pretty interested in Piper. Something change in the re-edition? I liked he was into her, but I remember another thing (and I remember she was younger.

Men can get jealous because a gynecologist/OB?? That’s just so weird but I really don’t know if can be real. #Strange.

4.5 wonderful stars!!

This has been my favorite Assassins book yet. Granted, I wasn't so fond of the previous books, I still requested this based on the blurb alone. Boy, I am so glad I did because I ended up devouring this book and enjoying Piper and Erik's story.

Eric Titov is a real bad boy. And when I say bad, I mean BAD. He uses women and doesn't care much for them at all. Plus, he had this really fucked up childhood which involved a lot of physical abuse that culminated in a horrific tragedy where Erik witnessed his father killed his mother and then killed himself afterwards. All of these happened in front of Erik, which messed him up real good. Thankfully, he was adopted by his aunt and uncle and was able to come to the US and finally had a semblance of a normal childhood. But that particular incident affected Erik's view on relationship. He was convinced that he couldn't be a husband and father material for fear that he might end up like his biological father.

Piper Allen is a nice girl and is known as the flighty one, career-wise, in her family. She's been in love with Erik since forever even though he hardly notices her. I loved Piper. She's the best Toni Aleo heroine to date. I remembered reading the previous books in this series and how much I disliked the heroines in those books but Piper was easy to like. I simply adored her vulnerability and the way she fought for Erik and her baby.

Story-wise, Blue Lines had the depth and character development I was looking for. I was so annoyed with Erik for more than half of the book. I didn't know whether or not he could be redeemed but I was wrong. Ms. Aleo has written his redemption beautiful. It wasn't abrupt, it was slow and sweet and very convincing. I believed it. It was a gradual change although, he still had his doubts, you can clearly see that Erik has changed. And for those of you who are wondering

I also loved Erik's adoptive family especially his relationship with Cooper, his adoptive father. It was one of the highlights in the story for me. It really showed that in spite his reputation, there is actually something good hiding behind the bad boy facade. And it also supports Piper's intuition that Erik isn't as douche as he might have been. I would have been very disappointed in Piper for falling in love with jerk but as it turns out, she was right. Erik is a good man.

I definitely, definitely recommend this one. And I also think that this can be read as a standalone. The other couples from previous books appeared here but you don't have to read their books to enjoy Erik and Piper's story. So no worries there.

You need someone to love you and you need to know that you deserve that love, and I want you to let me be that someone.

I love a good sports romance, add into this mix a sexy, tatted, very man-whorish hockey player and I'm on pervy cloud 9. But this was no smooth ride for me. As much as I wanted to love Erik, I'm pretty sure I wanted to kick him in the nuts more often than not. He had so many things going for him, and then he'd open his mouth and the things he'd say to Piper just had me going

But all that aside, I spent the end of this book in tears. The last part of this book made me cry silly, crocodile tears of joy. I loved it so much.

Piper has been in love with the sexy Erik Titov for months. So when the opportunity to give into their mutual passion shows itself, she doesn't even think twice. The last thing that she expects is for Erik to leave, and to leave her with a plus sign surprise after their night together.

Erik hasn't been able to put the alluring Piper out of his mind since that night. But he knows that he's not the right man for her. So he moves on the only way he knows how, between the legs of many, many, many different women.

So when Piper shows up on his door step with the shocking news that he's to be a daddy, suffice it to say he doesn't take it very well. I swear, the things that this man would say to Piper had me screaming

Because I wanted to kick his man-whoring ass. To say that he was a dick to her for the majority of the book would be a gross understatement. Particularly when he proposed that they get married for the sake of image. Really Erik! Way to take the romance out of things!

Piper on the other hand was an amazing heroine. I loved her from the very beginning. Her strength and the way she cared for Erik through thick and thin really got to me. She was such a likable and endearing heroine.

Now as much as I wanted to hate Erik, there were moments where his vulnerability would shine through and we got to see the real man behind the facade. And little by little I began to warm up to him. When the truth behind his childhood all came to light, I can definitely say I understood exactly why he was so hesitant to fall for Piper.

Their story was filled with many bumps, but it was also filled with sweet and steamy moments. I lived for the times where Erik's sweet side would shine through. And then that ending; perfection!

So as frustrating as some parts of this book were, and as much as I wanted to throttle Erik, I still really enjoyed it and looking forward to the next installment of the Assasins series.

4 Scared Stars

In this fourth installment we have the story of Piper (Harper’s sister) and Erik.
Piper is in love with Erik since probably forever but he never noticed her. Until that one night that will change everything.
Erik noticed Piper before, but he is a scarred men with ghosts so he doesn’t do feelings, he doesn’t do relationships, he doesn’t anything that could potentially last so he tells Piper that night was a mistake and tries to forget her. Until he realizes he can’t.

description

And that night turns into an accidental pregnancy and now everything will change.
Erik decides that the best it’s for them get married (since he’s in trouble with the team because of his public image) and have a pretending wedding.
But the feelings that started slow are now growing up… and how can a thing be fake when it feels so real?

Rating: 4 Stars.
Storyline: Sweet and romantic, like all the books in this series. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was a pretty good reading.
Writing Style: Third person, dual POV. Engaging, sweet and funny wiring. Like always, a slow-paced but completely addictive book.
Character Development: Piper was sweet and I really liked her, but for several moments she was a doormat. She should have stood up more. Erik was good and I ended up really liking him, but God, he was an asshole sometimes! I just wanted to kick him! Like always, it was nice to see more of the previous characters.
Steam: Some hot scenes.

This was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. They asked for it.

I almost classified this as "horror"; I don't think I would have been far off.

When I started reading Blue Lines, I so wanted to like it. Why? Because of the dedication in the book. It got me right here {pointing to my heart} and made me root for the author even before I got to the first page.

But then I read the prologue and first chapter and unfortunately, whatever warm and fuzzy feelings I felt for the author morphed into frustrations over the lack of character development.

Blue Lines revolves around Piper and Erik and the result of their one night stand. A rather simple plotline and because of that simplicity, the need to flesh out these main characters was so important; anything less would spotlight the flaws in not only the plot development, but also the writing itself. And I think that's what happened here. By about 17% (In Kindleland), I stopped giving a sh-care about who these people were supposed to be and started seeing things like over used phrases. Example, we get that Philip and Erik were best friends. You can stop telling me now. In case I didn't realize they were best friends, I was told again in the following chapters... sometimes twice. 40+ times folks. That's right. I even searched it. If I cared about the characters, I wouldn't have noticed such a small detail.

Ms. Aleo drove it home how much of a douche Erik is. We got it. Over. And over. And over. And... wait for it.... over again. He slept with Piper then told her "sorry babe. Never again. You're a forever girl, and I don't do forever." Can we insert an eye roll here? Because i just did. Again. On my ereader I just highlighted pages at a time with a single word in the note: "Idiot." I used that a lot to describe both Piper and Erik. After he gave her the initial send off, he went about whoring his way through the tabloids. OK, we GOT it. I don't know how many times that was thrown in my face, but the more this man was described, the more repulsed I became. Nothing appealing whatsoever. Then his reaction to the news of his impending fatherhood... Yeah, he's a prize. There was no obvious quality about him that endeared to me. Throughout the entire book, I kept hoping he'd just sign a form to forfeit his parental rights and call it a day. He was selfish and a coward that really didn't learn anything or grow as a person, much less a man. By the time we were told of his childhood, I honestly couldn't have cared less. Forget the fact that it was just TOLD to us ad nauseum how "messed up" he was. Sure, he had a pretty rough childhood, but that doesn't give him free license to treat anyone the way he did. He was "saved" by 2 loving people when he was 13 and continued to have that loving relationship for years to come. I can understand how his experience may have made him reluctant to be a father, but it didn't explain away his behavior regarding everything else. People that survive abuse like that tend to be 1 of 2 ways: violent or protective. He was neither. Maybe a consultation with a psychologist would have made this believable.

Piper had been in love with Erik for quite some time. Why? No clue. We never really got a chance to see WHY she loved him. And from the way he acted and treated her, I never saw what was so appealing about him. I would say it was his "magic stick", but supposedly, she loved him before that. So what does that say about Piper? She's an idiot. An idiot that likes to be walked on and treated like sh-crap. And that's what we got here folks. A book about being treated like crap.

The characters were just one dimensional in all their dumbn-itude. At 80% he basically says "you know what? I don't think I can do this... yeah... this isn't for me. I'm going to hurt you. I just know it. So...to NOT hurt you...I'm...just..gonna...abandon you and our unborn child, mmmkay? Wait... Piper where are you going? Why are you locking yourself in the bedroom and crying? I think you're overreacting? Can we talk about it?" Seriously? I mean... Seriously?! The next page.. THE VERY NEXT PAGE "She wanted Erik." OMG. WTF girl?? I was literally yelling out loud (YOL) "ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME?!"

This book needs a lot of work. It's great that we have flawed characters but the reader needs to not only see the scars and traumas but also the redemption. Give us a reason to root for an otherwise un-rootable person. Show me how wounded they are. But show me how great they could be. And give me a glimpse of a redeeming quality relatively early on so that I could not stop caring by 10%.

UGH. How do I un-read this?!

4 Assassinating, Confounding, Persevering, Relentless Stars * * * */*

The Blurb:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a person who came to Blue Lines by Toni Aleo without any knowledge of the previous stories, my time with Erik and Piper may be observed and processed a little differently than those who have been with them throughout the series.
I saw this as a study of nature verses nurture in a way.
You had Erik, this tough, hunk of an athlete who had a very tragic childhood with a physically abusive, domineering father and a drug addicted mother, left to handle all of this alone until he was 13 years old. He was rescued by Cooper and Alli and they provided him the only experience of unconditional love, trust and security. They worked hard to give Erik self worth and in many ways, they succeeded.
Then there is Piper, this beautiful, creative spark. A daughter to a family which loves her but questions and scoffs all the decisions she makes. She is more of a restless spirit than her siblings and is constantly being compared to them and feels judged.
These two each bring their own baggage to the mix and it is the power of desire, want and determination which pulls them through to the end.
It is Piper's unerring love and belief in Erik which is the main focus of this tale. She sees him through all of his posing as the carefree unfeeling stud of the team. She continues to hammer away at him; confronting mercilessly his walls of distrust and fear.
Of course all of these actions are in addition to chemistry and need these both have for each other; tasted and experienced from a night together that rocked both of their senses...
Side note: Ms. Toni Aleo... Thank you for your talent in setting up some of the most enjoyable steamy times......hot, wanton passion... yes, I can understand your following.
As the time goes on and the impending life changing event comes closer, both Piper and Erik must come to terms with who they are; what they are to each other and how they will go forward... if at all.
I understood all of the obstacles and most of the time; the inner dialogue was everything it should be. I did feel though at some point, the repetition of all the reasons of what they were fighting - either for or against was a bit too much.
That being said... the overall story, supporting players and the topic of overcoming what you have experienced and what type of long term impact it has on you was real.
I would also like to share my warmest thoughts to Ms. Aleo as she lost her mother and dedicated this book and all of her writing to her.
Piper, I'm not the guy for you. I am a dick, an asshole, a man-whore, remember?
This is Book 4 in the Assassins series. We met Piper and Erik in the last book, and this is their story. Basically, Erik is a no-strings, never had a relationship and doesn't want one type of guy and Piper is the sweetest girl ever. After running into each other at a bar, they go home together and do the nasty all night long. She thinks she can change him, but he freaks out and leaves and now it's 6 months later....and Piper has a big secret. I don't want to spoil anymore...so go read it!
A frozen light
In dark and empty streets
You smile hiding behind
A God-given face
But I know you're so much more
Everything they ignore
Is all that I need to see
You're the only one I ever believed in
The answer that could never be found
The moment you decided to let love in
Now I'm banging on the door of an angel
The end of fear is where we begin
The moment we decided to let love in
I wish
Wishing for you to find your way
And I'll hold on for all you need
That's all we need to say
I'll take my chances while
You take your time with
This game you play
But I can't control your soul
You need to let me know
You leaving or you gonna stay
You're the only one I ever believed in
The answer that could never be found
The moment you decided to let love in
Now I'm banging on the door of an angel
The end of fear is where we begin
The moment we decided to let love in
There's nothing we can do about
The things we have to do without
The only way to feel again
Is let love in
There's nothing we can do about
The things we have to live without
The only way to see again
Is let love in
I can't remember how or why I came across the author Toni Aleo, but I'm so bloody glad I did because every book I read by her, not only do I love, but it lifts my heart and helps me remember why I love reading so much. Quite simply Toni Aleo is the reason I love to read!
A beautifully written story of unrequited love, of falling for that guy who could never give you his heart, of putting your heart on the line for the one person you've loved all your life and the one person who could never love you back.........
"I can't be the man you want."
This book gave me tears of sadness and tears of joy. As cliched as it sounds it was a roller coaster ride of emotions starting with absolute contempt of the leading man and a heart full of love for the leading lady. If you've ever had your heart broken, then this is the book for you because it's one of those books that might just break your heart but it will also heal you up again. It's a book I found hard to put down and a book I was still thinking about even when I'd finished the final chapter. In my book that makes this one a full five star read and I highly recommend it.
4.5 Stars
This is my first Toni Aleo read and it will not be my last. I was completely addicted to this story trying to read snippets in between work and then staying up late to finish!
Piper Allen has longed for Erik Titov for the last two years. His brother married her sister and since then they run into each other at family get-togethers. Trouble is Erik is a raging man-whore. He’s on the professional hockey team The Assassins’ and has no shortage of women throwing themselves at him, and he’s happy to oblige. Still, Piper sees a different side to Erik at these gatherings, one where he dotes on his niece and shows unconditional love to his family. But still Piper can’t ignore the fact that Erik never has a serious girl. Everything changes for Piper when in a moment of weakness they spend the night together. She hopes for more but he of course crushes that hope by telling her that night was a big mistake. Fast forward a few weeks and Piper has the shock of finding out she’s pregnant.
Erik has always been enamored by Piper, his sweet and gorgeous sister-in-law but he’s never let himself act on anything, until one fateful night. He can’t get Piper out of his mind since that night, and boy does he try by sleeping with tons of women.
This all started and ended with Piper Allen. She was also the reason he had been with every woman in Nashville…he was trying to forget Piper.*
His efforts do not go unnoticed by the team management and they are not happy because he’s giving the team a bad reputation. Erik must clean up his act or he’ll be kicked off the team for good. When Piper shows up on his doorstep months after their hot and lusty night to let him know he’s going to be a father, Erik freaks out. He’s worried he’ll be kicked off the team once it gets out, and his family will be livid with him. They all know and love Piper. He comes up with the idea of a fake marriage just until the smoke blows over. JERK!!!
I have to say I wanted to CUT CHOICE BODY PARTS off of Erik for a good portion of this book! He was such a gigantic prick! Normally this would completely ruin the story for me but somehow Ms. Aleo managed to write Erik in such a way that it didn’t. Erik’s POV shed light on his reasoning. Yes, he was a total ASSHAT, even in his head at first, BUT gradually we see him change and little bits of the great guy I knew was under all that would peek through. He can’t help but fall for Piper; she’s sweet, impulsive and so full of life. One thing I was SOOOOO happy about is that there was no Thank goodness!!
My heart bled for Piper! Oh man, did I want to do some violence to Erik for hurting her so! He was so thoughtless and would blurt out the most insensitive things. I was glad she stood up for herself without being bitchy. Loved Piper! Luckily for Erik, Piper can see exactly how Erik sells himself short. She’s pretty patient with him knowing that once he removes his head from his sphincter he has a real chance at having a happy life and family with her. At about the 50% mark Erik begins to change and I slowly fell for him.
The super sweet HEA made my heart swell with happiness! Toni Aleo brought out strong emotions and sucked me right in with her addictive writing! I’m definitely going back to read the rest of this series!
Favorite Quote:
“I’m hard to love but when I mess up, I promise I’ll do everything to make it better because I want you. Only you. For the rest of my life. I love you Piper Titov, and you are mine. Marry me…again, and know that I will only love you for the rest of my existence.”*
I read this book courtesy of NetGalley.
I had high hopes from this story, with the continued delay of its release I was certain that I was gearing up to read a masterpiece. Unfortunately this was not the case. This books fell flat.
There is nothing new or unique about this story, though put in the hockey setting I guest gives it a twist. Though we can't say that because no one actually plays any hockey in this one. Sure we hear about it but we don't experience it. I'm not even a hockey fan but I would have loved to have the hero's shining moment on the ice as we had in the previous books. I actually forgot he played hockey. This story could have been condensed to 200 pages. There was just too much telling instead of showing me why Erik was so broken. The story could have been enhanced with a flashback from some of his beatings or a better understanding of his dads unflinching love for a woman that destroyed him. Instead, I was told and it lent no deep understanding as to why he is the way he is.
I also think that a big opportunity was missed to show Piper's deep insecurity, with the whole Reese situation. Also her unflinching devotion to others was not really respected and built upon. Instead of this strong, woman who will fight for her man we are given a weak heroine who can double as a doormat.
I'll keep trying though the last books I read from this author left me feeling empty, and I quite frequently lost interest in the stories. The drama, and the heart were missing from this one, but I believe that once Toni finds her place with her new publisher and starts to push back on some of the extra icing goodness fancy editors tend to edit out of books then her work will be gold again.
For the past few weeks I’ve been indulging in some very hot hockey romance stories with each one being better than the previous one. When Toni asked if I wanted to read the draft of Blue Lines – the 4th story in the Assassins Series – my answer was simply, duh!
I’m notorious for ditching in the middle of a series especially if I have to wait eons for the next book to come out, but I can safely say that Toni Aleo’s latest novel has me anxious for more. I’ve never fully invested in a group of characters the way I have in the Assassins Series. It doesn’t matter who the story is about, the supporting cast adds enough diversity and intrigue that you are left with a thirst to know more.
Blue Lines had me from page one. The prologue was intense and to be honest I’m one that avoids prologues, but this one hooks you and in a few short pages you feel the connection between the characters.
My intent, when I started reading, was to read a chapter and go to bed. At 3 am and at only 65% I had to put it down reluctantly. With only four hours of sleep, I was back reading. I simply couldn’t get enough of Erik and Piper.
As I sit here, I want to tell you everything. I want to spill on the emotions that Toni’s characters are experiencing. I want to make you drool over Erik and the sex appeal that he has and make you wish you were the fun-loving and free-spirited Piper, but I can’t. I will say that Blue Lines is without a doubt a hat trick (nice hockey pun). I couldn’t read it fast enough, yet wanted to savor every word and when I finished I was excited for Erik and Piper and their journey.
Blue Lines is sexy and riveting with the perfect combination of love and lust.
She has done it AGAIN ;) Firstly I would like to Thank my friend and author Toni for giving me the FReAKInG honour of being a BETA reader for BLUE LINES. Those of you who know me , know that I love Toni and all the books she has written so far and this was no exception. Just when i think they couldn't get any better but they do, Toni's books get better and better each time she writes.
Once again it has a steamy hot hockey player named Erik and it has the gorgeous PIper who I adore. The story starts off with a very complicated situation and develops from there. This story is not as simple as girl meets guy they fall in love yadda yadda yadda oohhh no, this story is roller coaster of a ride which I loved every second of it, I had the crying and I also had a few laughs and the heartbreak and the passion and the frustration and the need to punch a certain someone in the head sometimes lol I felt all theses emotions reading another brilliant book by the creative mind of Toni. If you haven't read any of Toni's books READ THEM NOW.
Jeez this book!!! After sharing a night together Erik and Piper find themselves tied to each other.
Now Erik!!! Made me sooo mad. I felt like jumping into the book and beating the crap out of him. But he was such a typical bloke and it was refreshing to read.
Piper, I'm the guy for you. I am a dick, an asshole, a man-whore, remember?
I should have known what this book was about by reading the title. Despite not liking the direction of the storyline at first, I enjoyed this and finally we have a likeable heroine in the series. Woohoo!!!
I would recommend this if you like your douchebag hero and hockey romance.
That's it, I'm DNF'ing my review! I kept this one on my currently reading list with the hopes inspiration would strike and I could write a review without coming off as a huge, arrogant hockey player man hating bitch but it's just not in the cards for me. I thought Erik was a complete tool for most of the book and that's just not going to change. Normally in Toni Aleo's books it's the heroine that keeps pushing the perfect man away (I'm looking at you, Elli and Fallon!) but in a reversal of roles, Erik is the one having a problem seeing what's right in front of him. GAH!
Holy crap this sucker was long! But it was a good story and it kept me interested the whole time. Erik was a douche most of the time but he pulled it together by the end of the story and redeemed himself and Piper was a completely likeable character. A sweet woman that's in love with a douche and showing him how to love... yep, sweet story!
1 star – Contemporary/Sports Romance
I hated the H/h...a selfish, immature, total asshat hero and a doormat heroine who kept putting up with him despite his disregard and horrible treatment. This was an overall fail and a rare 1-star for me.
BLUE LINES
● Erik (28) & Piper
● NHL player / illustrator for books
● one-night stand
● 6 months she lets him know about the pregnancy
● his brother married her sister
● fake marriage (to help his image)
● surprise baby
● opposite attracts
While the storyline was fine, Erik's attitude was so off-putting.
