How I overcame depression, foreclosure, addiction and homelessness by expressing gratitude.
In 2004 his house was foreclosed on. After the county Sheriff moved him out he started sleeping in his car at a local truck stop parking lot. Jobless, depressed, broke and addicted to alcohol, Sutton shares how he changed his thinking and actions, which changed his life. You will laugh and cry at the situations he found himself in.
Prps to the author for getting his life back on track. but overall I was disappointed in this book. The author is a bit vague about his descent. It seemed really like as much a case of attitude as it was alcohol. He seems to survive fairly well. There is really no rock bottom moment for him nor any epiphany. His gradual reclamation is the resuslt of a good AA sponsor and finding a little releigion. The book read like twelve steps lite. It felt that much of his story was missing. So while it was great that he addressed his problems, he is vague about the process. His account seems sanitized which essentially sucks the emotion from the narrative.
I got this book for free on my kindle so I figured, sure, why not. Well there are about 1,000,000 memoirs out there that are a whole lot better written and more interesting. I didn't find him to be very special or memorable. I wanted to put the book down from the first few pages but I forced myself to slug through. It is a short book...phew.
The only reason I'm not giving 1 star is that I didn't loathe it and I'm cutting this guy a little slack... but just barely.
The story of how one man turned his life around using the AA 12 step program. The book picks up as he is hitting rock bottom and finally finds his way back up. It took a lot of strength to put this all on paper and in public view. This book shows the strength of the program and it is my prayer that this would give hope to another.
I don't drink, I don't believe in god, and I've never been homeless, but I found this book very inspirational. I can't imagine going through what this man has gone through and coming out the other side (even more) whole. He did bring it all on himself, he admits freely, but it is his attitude and what he learned and shares about dealing with your fears that really made an impact on me.
