When an ordinary kid learns he’s the heir to a secret agent dynasty, F.A.L.C.O.N puts him on a case to protect a famous rock group and find a missing journalist. Before he knows it, Colt Shore has gone from body guard to rock star to full-fledged agent when he learns that a human trafficking ring plans to kidnap a group of teenage girls. It will take more than his ingenuity and skills and a couple of cool gadgets to protect his new friends and rescue the captured girls before it’s too late.
Axel Avian was born in West Sussex, England. His life changed overnight when his parents died under mysterious circumstances while the family was traveling through an Eastern Bloc country. Their paperwork and passports went missing, and Axel was named a ward of the state. He was sent to an isolated mountain boarding school. It was here he learned to take care of himself and become a canny fighter as he was often the target of the older boys. The school taught the boys survival skills. Axel became a talented skier and snowboarder. It was here Axel started writing stories at night, always in English, so no one else could read them.
When he was twelve, he was located by a man working on behalf of his uncle, and given the opportunity to either return to his hometown or go to one of the European secondary schools run by an organization much like FALCON. He chose FALCON and never looked back. When he became an active agent at a young age, he transferred to a facility in the United States.
Axel has traveled the world for his work. To relax, he enjoys sky and SCUBA diving, hang gliding, rock climbing, and snowboarding. He speaks four languages, reads whenever he can, and routinely trounces opponents on video games. (Bring it.) He would also like to note that he is humble, easily amused, and occasionally very funny.
Since he is not (usually) an active agent these days, he thought it might be time to write some books in hopes of letting kids know they, too, can change the world. Agent Colt Shore Domino 29 is his first book.
A note about the organization
The Free Alliance for the Lasting Cooperation of Nations (or FALCON) is a humanitarian organization that actively works to make the world a better place. Part think-tank, part secret agent organization, FALCON agents are at work in all corners of the globe.
Chris's Rating: 2.75 Colt Shore’s life changes dramatically when he learns that the people he always thought to be his parents are not his parents. Being in a school that trains super agent spies he finds himself assigned to a case to protect a young rock band on tour and is pushed into fighting a criminal ring dealing in human trafficking. I was really expecting to like this book a LOT, but I didn’t…especially at the start. Maybe I didn’t pay enough attention to something, but the fact that his High School was dedicated to training agents kind of hit me blindsided to the point that I thought it was a joke…until it kept going on and wasn’t. The writing improved in the second half, but the characters (except for Colt himself) constantly annoyed me. A lady who would throw her daughter to the wolves because it MIGHT be able to help an unrelated girl she had met years before. A teen which Agent Shore had to stay with and protect who was so obsessed with doing the “right thing” that she would manipulate the leading character into stupid and dangerous situations without ever thinking that she could do the “right thing” in smarter ways! There was some humor and like I said I was able to get into the book more as it went on. Definitely a Tweenish novel with a slight taste of Alex Ryder.
Aimee at Arundel Publishing kindly sent me a pre-release copy of this first book in what promises to be a cool series. I went into this eyes-wide-open, even though I feared it was going to be a rip-off of Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider series—both series featuring a type of teenage James Bond. I was also a little wary of it being as unreadably horrible as the last book I accepted from a little-known publisher and a first-time author. You won't find my review of that book, because I didn't write one. I only review books I feel that I can positively recommend. So the fact that you are reading this review means that I liked this book. In fact, I really, really liked it.
Colt Shore is like Alex Rider in about the same way that Percy Jackson is like Harry Potter. There are definitely similarities between them and between the organizations they represent; but these similarities could be put down to their common genre. All right, then; so we have established that "a type of teenage James Bond" is now officially a genre. Alex Rider was there first. But Colt Shore is entitled to his turn, and when he takes it, it is most definitely not a ripoff.
For starters, Colt is an all-American kid who goes to a school for secret agents in the all-American town of Springfield, Missouri. For those of you who consider Missouri a flyover state, take it from someone who lives there: Springfield is a real town. The next time I'm down there, I might try to look around for the FALCON training academy, though I hear tell it's well concealed. FALCON is an elite, international problem-solving organization that combines a think-tank with active agents, answerable to no particular government, policing global crime and serving the interests of world peace. Other than being on a think-tank track, specializing in Mediterranean affairs, Colt Shore seems to be a normal high school kid. At first.
Then Colt finds out who is parents really are. And almost immediately after that life-changing revelation, he finds himself on active status, with a mission to protect a brother-sister teen rock band during a USO tour of Afghanistan. The teens have been targeted for kidnapping since their journalist mother made a connection between a girls' school in Kandahar and a worldwide human trafficking ring. Suddenly, swiftly, Colt's mission evolves from protecting Thorne and Talya Ellis to saving the girl, and a dozen others, from a slave auction disguised as a choir tour. Flying out of his comfort zone, and at times riding the edge of becoming a rogue agent, Colt finds himself battling some world-class bad guys amid the scenic mountains and castles of Bavaria.
Click by click, Colt narrates how one decision leads to another, and then another, like the proverbial row of tumbling dominoes, each half-again as big as the last one. You start by tipping over a domino the size of a pack of gum and, in just 29 clicks, you knock over one the size of the Empire State Building. That's the metaphor that drives this book, maintaining a rising level of tension enlivened by humor, pop-culture references (including references to Bond, James Bond), death-defying stunts, just barely non-lethal action, and a spark of teen romance. It's the fantasy-fulfilling wild ride of a young man who has trained for a career as an intelligence analyst, and who suddenly finds himself a bit over his head in live-action-hero soup. It's a sometimes educational look at foreign sites we may not have visited before, even in books; full of convincing details and driven by non-stop momentum. My qualms about this book evaporated soon after the first page, and by the end I was looking forward to the next Agent Colt Shore adventure.
Agent Colt Shore: Domino 29, by Axel Avian, is a well rounded, fully sculpted novel. I enjoyed this storyline immensely. Colt Shore starts in the present tense, where he is with young girls who have been captured and locked up, and he must save them from a human- trafficking ring, and he looks back to how this whole domino effect started. Colt's parents are elderly, and he feels he has lived in the shadow of his older brother, Dix, his whole life. His parents have a shrine dedicated to their son, who died at the age of 22, before Colt was ever born. Colt feels that his brother was perfect, and "frozen in time." He thinks that he can never live up to the flawless brother that has left behind a legacy of such perfection. Colt's insecurities are always in the forefront. He compares every step of his adventure to the Domino Effect, and it takes 29 domino's to get to his final fall.
Colt overhears a conversation that turns his world upside down. He realizes that his whole life is a lie. The knowledge is brought to the forefront. All the secrets are revealed to him, and he is in a tailspin. Colt attends the F.A.L.C.O.N. Academy, that is disguised and serves as a high school. Colt lives in Springfield, Missouri. He is part of the think-tank, filled with trainee's that are active, and non-active secret agents, to eliminate global international affairs in crime. Colt specializes in Mediterranean affairs, and he is an outstanding drummer, that is soon discovered.
Colt Shore is immediately sent through all kinds of secret floors, and hidden panels, which use finger identification to make it to the heirarchy. These are places of high clearance. There he meets someone who is part of the secret from his past, and this knowledge is the beginning of his journey as an undercover agent on a mission, covering as a drummer in his favorite rock band at a USO Tour in Afgahanistan, protecting Jayla, and Thorn, (children of a famous missing journalist, Sophie Ellis, who he must find,) and keep them from being kidnapped like their mother.
Throughout this book, Colt has many chances to prove he is worthy of his lineage, though he is always feeling insecure. Colt gets promoted quickly, and must problem solve, which is what he has been trained to do. He must stop a human-trafficking ring that has young girls held hostage, against their will, whille the traffickers pretend they are part of a choir group. This novel is a thrill ride of a lifetime!!! I felt like I did when I started reading Harry Potter, and watching inspector gadget. The excitement, and adventure, the places, and the people, were all part of the wonderful imagination of Mr. Avian.
At times, I felt like I was reading a historical adventure. There are so many destinations, that are well described, and realistic. Agent Colt Shore is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, non-stop, action packed, death defying, fast moving adventures, a thrill a minute! This novel is a page turner, that I couldn't put down. It was exhilerating! It was funny, intriging, holding on to your seat scary, and find yourself letting out a breath when he gets through yet another obstacle.
Colt Shore is a good guy, who always wants to do the right thing, even when he realizes it would be easier not to. He is a wonderful role model for kids, and the book has many great life lessons. I've always loved James Bond, and now I have Colt Shore! I can't wait for the sequel to this series.
I give Agent Colt Shore: Domino 29, by Axiel Avian, 5 Brilliant, Page Turning, Colossal Ride, Thrill of a lifetime, Domino Effected Stars!!!
All his life Colton Shore has heard about his older brother Dix. Dead at age twenty-two, Dix has always been the hero; handsome, young and perfect. But what Colt doesn't know is that the people in his life have never been completely honest with him. When a startling truth comes to light regarding Dix, Colt is thrust into the secretive world of field agents.
Now Colt must go undercover to protect Talya and Thorne, members of Colt's favorite band....and the children of missing journalist Sophie Ellis. Sophie has been doing dangerous work in Afghanistan, uncovering truths that certain people would rather she not know. Colt's assignment proves much more difficult than expected when not only does he find Sophie Ellis, but also suspicious evidence that leads Colt to believe something much fishier than anything F.A.L.C.O.N. imagined is taking place. This is Colton Shore's first mission, and you're invited along.
Agent Colt Shore Domino 29 was one of those books I could not seem to put down! Full of humor, action and adventure, Colt's first mission proves to be entertaining and exciting. First of all, I loved the author's way of using dominos to explain the way how one tiny, minuscule decision you make can completely change your life. You never really stop to think about how your decisions affect who you are today, and I found myself really thinking about that while reading Agent Colt Shore Domino 29.
While the characters are all great, I really loved Talya. She's so determined to do what is right, and often isn't concerned about her own safety. Thank goodness Colt was there with her! These two characters balance each other out perfectly, with Colt being cautious and calm and Talya being impulsive and reckless. Also, even though these characters lead crazy lives, the reader will still be able to relate to them. For example, obviously I'm no secret agent, yet I still relate to Colt because in my life I have to make tough decisions that will affect others around me.
What I loved most about this novel although, was the tone. Risky and dangerous, it seems like anything could happen in this novel. Yet Agent Colt Shore Domino 29 is 100% realistic, and that makes this novel even better! Overall, Agent Colt Shore Domino 29 was a fast-paced novel that will keep the reader on the edge of their seats. It's a must read for anyone who loves action, and adventure!
Agent Colt Shore: Domino 29 is a fast-paced spy novel that will take you on a globetrotting, action-filled mission across the world. Alex Rider better watch out because there’s a new spy kid in town.
Colt Shore is not your typical 15 year old boy. He knows how to play drums, he goes to a secret-agent training school, knows 3 different language, have a third-degree black belt and he just recently found out that he’s the son of two of the top agents of FALCON. So when an opportunity to be an active agent arises, he immediately accepted it, wanting to prove himself worthy of the job.
Going to his first mission, he has to go undercover as a roadie for Thorne and Talya Ellis, two popular teen musicians of the band called Shadow, and should always keep an eye on them while in their USO tour in Afghanistan. But sometimes, the assignments you’re given is seldom the assignments you end up on and Colt will soon find this out for himself.
Colt was a really funny kid but he was a bit insecure and lacking self-confidence in the beginning. He redeemed himself, soon enough, as his mission went on. He was really great at adapting to the situation, he’s a fast-thinker and a really fast-learner. He showed a lot of remarkable traits that is admirable. I think he can make it as a top agent and maybe even better than his father and mother.
My favorite parts in the story were the car chase (which is really intense and fun) and the hang gliding part (which, I reckon, is breathtaking). I definitely envy Colt’s profession. I wish I could be as adventurous and as fearless as him.
To sum it up, Domino 29 is one heck of a roller-coaster adventure ride you wouldn’t want to miss. I recommend it to all the thriller-seekers and adventure-lovers out there.
Agent Colt Shore: Domino 29 is a fast-paced, action packed spy novel. It took me a day to finish this book. I just couldn't stop reading it. It was like this movie was playing in my head and I didn't want to pause it, yes this book would definitely be an awesome movie if they ever made one.
The plot was pretty good. I never actually read spy books before so this was a something new and surprisingly I just loved it! In this book we meet Colt Shore whose an ordinary teen who attends a spy school, okay maybe he's not that ordinary, still he's pretty much the not popular kid who lives behind his brother shadow. His brother died before Colt was born, everyone loved him and he was one of the top agents in F.A.L.C.O.N. Now Colt is not his brother, he is not a top agent or an active agent. But when one day he overhears something that shocks him and changes his life...big time. Than he finally gets his first mission to protect two rock star kids who under danger of being kidnapped. His mission sounds simple enough, just to keep two people safe, what he didn't expect is to find even a bigger mission, that might even result in his death...now what is he going to do?
The characters in this book were really entertaining. I loved Colt, he was really cool, his character was just really real to me. I also liked all of the other agents, they made me want to live in their spy world. There weren't really a lot of character "get to know" moments because it mostly focused on the story and all of the action. But in the end I think there is enough information to know the characters, and to see the change and development through out the story, especially Colt's.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was an awesome read with a lot of action and some fun moments. I would definitely recommend this book to teens who like action and spy books.
I was contacted by Arundel Publishing and given the opportunity to read Agent Colt Shore: Domino 29 before it is officially released on May 15th. I have to say that not only was I honored to get this opportunity, but I was more excited to read this new teen spy novel.
I loved Agent Colt Shore. I stayed up until 2am and read it straight through the day I got it. As it says on the cover, this was a thrilling must-read. It has everything you want from a spy novel, including spy gadgets, mystery, and danger. This is an imaginative book with action and adventure that hooks you from the start.
I loved that Colt Shore remains very relatable. He wants to do his best, but he doubts himself. I found Colt to be realistically portrayed (for a spy novel) and a very charismatic of a character. I could connect easily with Colt and appreciate him as a person and as an agent.
Other things I enjoyed were the connection of the dominos throughout the novel. On the back of the book it says "Start with a domino the size of a piece of gum, and 29 dominos later, you're knocking down one the size of the Empire State Building". Like this analogy the story build with the domino effect, and is used to connect moments in the novel. But it also paces itself so you don't feel like it rushes straight into action. While I wish the conclusion could have been longer, I still felt the rest of the book did a good job of not rushing into the exciting parts. The story really builds as you read it. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, Agent Colt Shore: The Games Begin.
If you like teen spy novels, like Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz, then you will love Agent Colt Shore.
Colt Shore has grown up in the shadow of his skilled and beloved secret agent brother, Dix, who passed away before he was born. Colt goes to a training academy for F.A.L.C.O.N., the Free Alliance for the Lasting Cooperation of Nations. One day the dominoes start falling as he finds out the truth about himself and his parents. Suddenly he’s gone active and is given a mission to protect the children of journalists in the Middle East. Well, things don’t go according to plan and Colt’s got to improvise. Hopefully his first assignment isn’t his last!
With references to James Bond, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and even Get Smart, ‘Agent Colt Shore: Domino 29’ is an engaging thriller about a teenage secret agent. I liked Colt’s personality and attitude in the face of danger and when his mission went off the rails. He’s pretty mature for his age, but I guess it’s to be expected when you grow up in the agency environment. He learns pretty quickly how actions have ever increasing consequences, like the ripples in a pool or the falling of dominoes. This book is a pulse-pounding adventure and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I think it’s a great book for young kids (early teens) who love action and thrills! There isn’t graphic violence and sex, either, just a tiny bit a potential romance, so I think parents would be okay with this one for their kids, too!
WARNING : You will not want to set down this book. It may lead to very late nights spent reading. This book was AMAZING. I've only read one other YA(i'm billing this as YA, as it's definitely a crossover book, spannig multiple genres. I'm sure MG lovers will love it too though, and i'm lending it to my 9 year old sister to read next!) book dealing with teenage 'secret agents', and it was my favorite book, thus I was super excited to read AGENT COLT SHORE : DOMINO 29. This book started out with the action almost from page 1, which was awesome, and continued all the way to the end. I sympathized with the characters, and I might have stayed up until 4 AM one night just to finish it, because I couldn't bear the suspense of not knowing what happens next! Normally, I have small quips about every book I read, even something as small as a misplaced comma can jar me from my reading pace, and ruin the whole chapter, i'm a very picky reader, but I loved EVERYTHING about this book - the writing style, the plot, the action, the characters, the humor, and there were so many twists and turns I never expected, it was really kept interesting! All in all, in case you couldn't tell from my review that was more aload of gushing than a review, I definitely highly recommend this book, and it is on my list of top 5 favorite books ever!
In Agent Colt Shore, author Axel Avian gives us a fast paced, action-filled book that will please both teens and adults.
I couldn't help but love Colt Shore. He's just an ordinary 15-year-old boy who has been training at FALCON, a special training school for secret agents. Although Colt hasn't trained to be a field agent, circumstances take place and he finds himself on an active assignment to protect a young teen rock band touring overseas. Armed with some cool gadgets, Colt sets off for quite an adventure.
This book was hard to put down. There were so many twists & turns, I just had to keep reading to see what would happen next. Agent Colt is a fun, realistic character. He has his doubts, but he's quick on his feet and he knows when to trust his instincts.
What I really enjoyed was the hidden history lesson I got. I was unfamiliar with much of the locations that took place in the book, so of course I had to do a little research of my own. Mr. Avian made it easy for me by providing some links on his website. If you get the chance, check out his site at axelavian.com .
I have no problem recommending this book. It's a fun, clean, exciting read. Recommended for ages 12 & up.
*Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review, and all opinions are my own
I could NOT put this book down. I loved every minute of it, and I'm very hopeful that it will turn into a series. :)
Yes, spy books are like bread and butter to me. Well, GOOD spy books, that is. And this one is definitely good.
While I want to tell you every tiny detail, I'm afraid anything I say will ruin the book - and you truly must read it for yourself. However, there are a few things I'm comfortable saying: * I love the way Mr. Avian lets you know each leading decision by inserting a domino: "Domino five." * These characters are fantastic. So fleshed-out as to be completely real. * Um, can anyone say spy gadgets? Is there anything better? * F.A.L.C.O.N., in general. Specifically, the way they're hidden, and the fact that they're not linked to any specific government.
There's so more more I want to say, but you'll just have to read it to find out why I went all "fan girl" on this book.
A boy who is haunted by the death of an older brother whom he never knew is thrown into the twist of a lifetime when an Agent of high standing visits his school. The school already was unusual by ordinary standards as its priority is to make spies and the people who help those spies/Agents do their job. Colt Shore was on a path to become an ordinary background guy, but life throws him a curve ball that has him jetting through Europe with a pop star he has idolized.
The book was one that was hard to put down and I really hope there will be another one with the same characters. Mr. Axel Avian does a wonderful job in bringing you with the characters to the strange areas of Europe and into the society of those the Agents must deal with.
A wonderful book for those who are into any sort of mystery stories. It is not fit for just one genre and I am extremely happy I was able to read it before it came out. I hope you enjoy it as well.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If you are in any way a James Bond fan you will love meeting Colt, a mostly ordinary kid (besides the fact that he goes to an agent training high school) who overnight gets his life flipped upside-down and finds out that he is being thrown into a rock band as their drummer for their USO tour in Afghanistan, while also having to protect the other band members from being kidnapped. His choices throughout the story put together the bigger picture as Colt discovers that doing the right thing is harder and more dangerous than anything else.
I loved this fast-paced action adventure full of right vs. wrong and heroes in the making. Agent Colt Shore is a character that has teenage struggles even though he is put in extraordinary situations. This book is most definitely a 5/5.
A Brief Summary. This is a book about a teenage boy throw into things he doesn't understand. His name is Colt Shore. He goes to a special school for secret agents. It is run by an organization called FALCON. As he is trained to be a secret agent, an active secret agent takes notice of him. The adventure that is started by their talk is an adventure Colt will never forget.
My Opinion I loved this book. I thought it was full of interesting facts about cars and other machines. I had my phone beside me looking up all of the assorted machines in this book. I thought the author did a great job in writing a page turner. I could barely put the book down at night. The best part was the counting down of the dominoes as the book started. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes action/ adventure books.
Finally, a great YA novel with a sense of humor! I borrowed this book from my son and it really appeals to an older audience without being too difficult or high-concept for young readers. Also, having an action character with a strong moral code is a really nice change of pace from the shoot-em-up books we've read in the past. The writing is strong and Axel Avian does a nice job developing his characters into realistic, sympathetic human beings, not just action machines. A great entry into the YA genre.
This pre-release copy was generously provided by Arundel Publishing for review. It is an engaging story for young adult readers. It is the story of Colt Shore, a young man who evolves from a normal life to a drummer and trained as a secret agent with an assignment to protect young women against kidnapping and human-trafficking overseas. Fast-paced and engaging.
During the coronavirus pandemic. My english teacher told my class to pick out a book to read and write a review about. I automatically knew what book I was going to read. I chose to read Agent Colt Shore Domino: 29 by Axel Avian. This book is 368 pages long and it has 30 chapters. I read this book in fifth grade and I remember actually enjoying the book so I decided to read it again. “It's tough having a hero brother, it's even tougher when he's dead.”. I like this quote because it perfectly shows how this book is able to keep the reader entertained. Also this quote gets the reader guessing and thinking about why his brother is a hero and how he died. The storyline for this book is really interesting and it keeps the reader guessing which I enjoy. While reading this book I noticed how creative the author made the characters and setting in the book. There are things in this book that you would probably not find in other books which just shows off the creativity from the author. This book just knew how to keep things going and it provided something to always look out for and I really enjoyed that. Although i really enjoyed this book, it's not perfect. One thing this book does that I don't enjoy is the amount of characters they have. I couldn't even tell you how many characters it has but it has a good amount. I don't like this because it may confuse the reader and you have to remember a lot of characters. “And this is Tayla.” This quote is just an introduction to one of the many characters late in the book. Although the book does do a good job by never having a dull moment sometimes the book can go too much into detail and sometimes it may be too much for the reader to handle. One thing I disliked in the book was the amount of pages there were. In my opinion the book could have ended 100 pages shorter and I feel like most of the pages were unnecessary. I would compare this book to any mystery book or any book that features spies. This book can be compared to a lot of spy books because of the storyline. Most spy books will include a dead or missing relative so this book can be compared to most of them. I would compare this book to the Disney kids show K.C Undercover. The show is about K.C trying to become a spy with her parents. This book just reminded me of the show because of spies but other than that i wouldnt compare to anything else in the show. I really would compare this book to any spy movie because again it has everything a spy movie needs and a good storyline. I think young teens would enjoy this book because it is a very fun book to read and also it is a good way to waste time if you wanted to. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read mystery and spy books because it is a good book. Out of 100 i would rate this book around a 85 because i really enjoyed reading the book.
Domino 29 by Axel Avian 368 pgs. Target audience: Young Adult Rating: Wizard
Colt Shore attends a training academy for the organization F.A.L.C.O.N., Free Alliance for the Lasting Cooperation of Nations, which is not affiliated with any specific government. As exotic as that might seem for a fifteen year old boy, Colt feels ordinary when compared to his perfect-in-every-way older brother, Dixon, who died at the age of twenty-two before Colt was born. But in one singular moment his life is catapulted from the mundane to downright adventurous and life threatening when the first of twenty-nine dominoes falls. Lucy and Victor aren’t his real parents and his older brother, Dixon, is in fact his dad who was killed on assignment. As an active agent, Colt’s mother turned him over to the care of Dixon’s parents and away from all the danger typical of active agent work. Reeling from the shock of it all, Colt discovers that one of the most admired field agents at his academy is his mother, Amber Coltrane. He’s given no time to process this new information as he is rushed into active duty by Mr. Waverly, head of F.A.L.C.O.N. His mission is to protect a brother and sister pop singing group on a USO tour after receiving a kidnapping threat. Active agent Colt Shore is equipped with all sorts of Bond worthy gadgets including a poison injecting ring, and a watch complete with GPS, call scrambling, panic button, flashlight, laser cutter, sonar plus the ability to run a car by voice command. This alone is any boy’s dream. Add to that a mind blowing car chase ending with an escape through a holographic wall to HQ, subbing for the drummer in a rock concert, being chased from Afghanistan to Germany where a daring rescue takes place. A nice nod to "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." in naming the big boss Mr. Waverly. Count this as a definite winner in the boy-turned-spy genre and let’s hope there will be more Agent Colt adventures. This is an ideal choice for fans of the “Alex Rider” series by Anthony Horowitz.
Read this book because my 13-year-old son (who is a reluctant reader, to say the least) had picked it up and was not only tearing through it, he kept laughing out loud.
I love Alex Ryder. Anthony Horowitz is great. But COLT is a totally different beast. It's kind of like comparing The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (which Colt references) to James Bond. Alex lives in a dark world of danger. Everyone around him has been (or is in danger of being) killed. He hates the work he has to do and the assignments he's sent on, but he is blackmailed at every turn to do so. As a dad, I admit that bothered me. But Alex is a real "hard-bitten" character, like Bond, existing in a frightening, kill-or-be-killed world. (And again, great twists and edge of your seat.)
Colt Shore is the opposite. He meets his true mom at the beginning of the book, and his boring life is shattered. He works for an organization that exists to do good, and Colt and his friends feel empowered and like they really can make a difference in the world. That's how I (and my son) felt after reading it.
You could tell Colt was having great fun, in a high speed chase with his mother, playing drums for his favorite rock band, hang gliding over a famous castle with a gorgeous rock star.
I'm interested in his relationship with his mother, which he finds both difficult and fantastic. I'm interested in what happens with him and the rock star, or if he can be happy with his normal girlfriend. I thought the scene on the train was hysterical. I also liked "going inside" so many famous places in the world.
So I like Alex AND Colt. Alex would kick Colt's ass, no question--but he'd feel conflicted about doing it. And Colt would tell the funnier version.
My review as it appears on my blog, Boys To Books. I received a review copy from the publisher.
Fifteen year old Colt Shore doesn't feel like anything special. Especially when compared to his nearly perfect older brother, Dixon, who died when he was twenty-two. Yet, the fact the he attends attends a school for secret agents run by the F.A.L.C.O.N. organization, makes him special.
Colt receives a startling revelation that his deceased brother is really his father and the mother he never knew is Amber Coltrane, a highly regarded agent at his academy. After the bombshell about his parents, his agent status is activated with what turns out to be a dangerous and exciting mission.
His mission involves protecting Thorne and Talya Ellis, a brother and sister team of a pop band, following a kidnapping threat. The group is to perform in Afghanistan as part of a USO tour and Cole must follow them across the world. Just like a row of dominoes, one nail biting event crashes into another culminating into an exciting conclusion. Colt and Talya discover a sinister plot to enslave young women. Colt must race across continents, into the mountains of Bavaria, and risk becoming a rogue agent in an attempt to rescue the girls. High tech gadgets combine with non-stop action make Agent Colt Shore Domino 29 delivers as a thrilling spy adventure comparable to James Bond but without the adult violence. Teen boys are sure to find a new action hero in Colt Shore.
A fun teen-spy adventure story with lots of action and humor. Colt attends a high school run by an organization called F.A.L.C.O.N., which stands for "Free Alliance For the Lasting Cooperation of Nations." It's a training academy, a combination of secret-agent training and a "think tank" where some high-achieving students are learning about international relations and how to be the "brains" behind future spy operations. Colt is in the operations track, not ever expecting to "go active" in the field, until an overheard revelation by his parents stuns him--and metaphorically knocks down the first domino in a chain of domino-like decisions that lands him in Afghanistan on a mission to guard a teenage rock star! Everything Colt thought he knew about his dead brother and his parents has been altered by the news, and his new family relationships are strong on his mind as he finds himself plunged into danger at every turn. He doesn't even have a driver's license yet, but now he's leading a high-speed car chase and hang-gliding and doing all sorts of crazy things in the course of his mission. Great choice to give fans of Alex Rider and Young James Bond books; appropriate for middle grades and up, with clean language and a sweet budding romance just barely touched on (so no mushy stuff for boys who avoid that sort of thing with a ten-foot pole!).
I LOVED this book!! Great characters, interesting locations, gadgets to drool over and non-stop action make this book really special. Colt is a well developed character who faces difficult decisions but stays true to himself and his values throughout the book. Strong woman characters, beautifully detailed descriptions of locations, timely issues and lots of excitement kept me reading long into the night. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
