I waited a few minutes before I turned to look at him, just to check his expression. His gaze was intense, his eyes piercing. Why was he looking at me? I ran my fingers through my hair and brushed the back of my hand across my lips, checking for anything out of place. His stare sent a charge of unsettled fear through me. Why? I tensed at the strange and unwelcome feeling.
“His name’s Ren - he moved here from England with his aunt.” I was smiling as I spoke; I couldn’t help it.
“Really?” She stopped walking and looked at me strangely as if I had said Ren was a vampire fresh from Transylvania.
THE STRANGE TINY girl stood in front of me in the blinding white snow and held out her hands revealing the sphere that was alive with swirling colors.
“The Inuit people believe that the lights are souls on their way to a second life. Part of the myth is that the soul only has thirty seconds to die. If there’s a force strong enough, like enduring love, the soul will be drawn back to earth. Do you believe that could be true?”
The boy locked his pinky finger with mine and we continued running into the forest where it was dark.
