He is a living legend, a master swordsman, and a hero of the Elven Empire. He had led his Warriors home in victory from a war that had lasted centuries. He is the High Lord General Gabriel Eagle Claw, Supreme Commander of the Combined Elven Forces, and his word is law. She is a force of nature, an Elven maiden trained in the art of survival by a Fae Warrior and she is just coming into the knowledge of her powerful talent. All of her life she has been able to converse with the forests about her. The leaves rustled their news into her ears, and the life force of the trees transmit their needs to her, for she is an Elf with a gift lost in legend. She is Eden, Guardian of the light of the Elven forests. TRATCHAR. The trees shout her title. Her people whisper it in awe.
“Catch,” the warning comes just in time to alert General Gabriel to attention and warrior that he is he is quick to react just as an arrow knocks a young Elven maiden from a tree branch that he has chosen to stand under, and he catches her as she falls. When blue eyes meet silver each know they have met their life mate, but such things as not as quickly accepted as they are recognized. He would have order in his ranks, she must be free to mark her own trail, he would bind her, tie her, control her. She would test his patience and will to the limit, and challenge his rights to own what she would not give freely.
This was not an enjoyable book. I could tell almost immediately that it was self-published, since I doubt a publisher would have read more than the first page before discarding it.
When I read a book that I’m going to review I keep a pad and pen handy to write down notes, twenty pages into the book I already had an entire A4 sheet of short hand notes; all negative.
When I read the blurb I was extremely excited, as it sounded so good, however by the first page I could tell it was going to be painful to endure. The authors writing style was poor and I don’t think any editing was done at all, which became more obvious when part way through the book Gabriel Eagle Claw’s name changed to Gabriel Eagle Talon before eventually reverting back to the original Eagle Claw.
Abraham has chosen to write this novel with a very formal almost old English tone, which was extremely tiresome almost immediately. Add to that the fact that this style was inconsistent with lines such as “Eden took out the first slaver” when stating that she killed a slaver. And this line when Eden states; “I need not heed your will then.” Which is directly followed by Gabriel’s response “Want to bet?”
Add to that the fact that there was no sentence variation, all were quite long and superfluous. There was also far to much banter between characters, so much so that they ended up talking in circles quite often, and a conversation that could have occurred and ended within a page or two went on for five and also had the characters stating the obvious every time you turned around. This led me to the belief that Abraham is trying to tell the reader (more like hammer home) what is occurring and not letting them come to the conclusion themselves. It was almost as if Abraham doesn’t know that readers do have a brain and are smart enough to know what's going on without everything being stated.
While I’m on the telling not showing point, there was little to no description of body language, and when it was present it was always followed by telling us what the character was feeling instead of allowing us to come to the conclusion ourselves. Abraham also had the habit of using clichés.
One line that amused me (made me want to bash my head against a wall) was; “You will not run from me against my orders” because you’re totally going to give permission for someone to run from you. And I can only guess that this line was written they way it was to tell (again not show) the readers about Gabriel’s personality, which leads me to my next point; Character development.
Abraham left no time for her characters to develop or even to let the readers discover their personalities- again choosing to tell the reader by using hyperbole and exaggeration. What was even worse than having someone personality shoved down my throat was the fact that the characters were not how they were described. For instance; Gabriel is supposed to be a ‘hard ass’ General who wants nothing but order, yet rarely shows any leadership qualities, is constantly taking crap from his nephew (which it’s made out to be at the beginning of the book that the pair don’t know each other very well). Eden is described as being strong willed fighter who needs her freedom… let me repeat that for you (since Abraham chose to repeat it constantly throughout the novel) Eden is a strong willed fighter who needs her freedom. Yet she seemed more like a spoiled brat and was- I thought- shown to be the cliché air headed female, capable of escaping Gabriel two or three times yet gets herself captured every time.
The characters were all weak one-dimensional, which was most likely due to the fact that Abraham seemed to only emphasis a single or a small few aspects/personality traits.
And don’t even get time started on the number of times Eden was complemented on her abilities ‘for a female’, or that ‘Elven Maidens’ were meant to be passive and calm. Which, with the repetitive and irritating Exposition in Dialogue gave Eden a ‘marry Sue’ complex (she is the most beautiful - although it seemed every female character was described that way – the only female elf who didn’t fit the mold of an ‘Elven Maid’)
There were also the inaccuracies that went unexplained; • Such as the time the rest of the group were meant to catch up in an hour, yet suddenly it’s two days later and they’re only just arriving. • The Unnecessary drama such as Eden’s pregnancy (which she wasn’t pregnant, her sister just assumed she was because she was a healer and had ‘never been wrong yet’ and Eden was tired and grouchy and because she’d been using her magic a lot. Yet the sister told Gabriel before even telling Eden or actually examining Eden) • The unexplained and irrational rollercoaster of characters emotions. • The unnecessary and irrelevant plot lines. • Deus ex Machins such as the aphrodisiac spell and the fact that pretty much everyone had some special ability or was the best of the best or could see the future.
Also the obvious lack of editing; • The missing speech marks, the random misplaced speech marks, missing punctuation and a lack or commas. • The complete lack of foreshadowing through the entire novel that made it impossible to keep up, as things just randomly happened- like the appearance of Eden’s twin sister who no one not even the mother knew about. • The poorly timed switches in Point of view between Gabriel, Eden and any other character. • Inaccuracies in plot. • Little to no imagery or body language. • Incorrect Syntax, as well as using words in the wrong context. • Over use of stereotypes and clichés, and repetition.
This entire novel had the feel of a town crier stomping through the streets boasting about and inflating the egos of those who followed behind. It was painful to read, mind numbingly boring and at some points I swear I could feel my brain cells dying. Self Publishing (S.P) has many pros and there are many fantastic pieces of work produced through S.P but this is definitely not one of those examples.
GABRIEL is the first book and series for new author M A Abraham. As part of the Elven Chronicles, Gabriel is the introduction to a new and exciting family of Elves and Fae in the recovery phase following 500 years of war. Hoping to gather their ‘people’ back home, Gabriel is commissioned by Elven King Daroth to locate and return the Elves who have gathered in the Hidden Valley for centuries. But unbeknownst to him, Gabriel’s journey is more than a mission of recovery- but a mission to find his heart.
High Lord General Gabriel Eagle Talon knew that this mission was more than a search and rescue. King Daroth had the gift of foresight, and without a doubt, he was hiding something from his friend. Knowing that the King’s true life-mate was one of the missing Elven maidens, Gabriel was willing to risk his pride for his friend. But the cryptic signals between Gabriel’s nephew Marious and the King were exasperating-something or someone was waiting. Hoping to end their charade, Gabriel and his warriors, set out to discover what secrets the King was hiding.
Eden is an Elven maiden, trained as a warrior but with the ability to ‘talk’ to the trees. Her presence and nurturing gift aids with the renewal and growth of the surrounding forests and trees. But the trees whisper of pain and sorrow, as well as warn Eden about the ongoing search for her people. With the warning comes a revelation that her future is about to change. But Eden has always felt that something or someone was missing in her life-would the quest answer her prayers?
Eden and Gabriel are true life-mates, but neither will accept what fate has ordained. With the knowledge that they refuse to admit to their life mate bond, Eden’s brother takes it upon himself, to assist the couple on their journey. But a critical error in judgment forces Gabriel and Eden into a situation that ends in suffering for both.
Upon return to their homeland, Eden’s sister C’liandra is betrothed to King Daroth, and the bonding ceremony is immediate. When Eden’s great-uncle recounts the history of the family lore, it is discovered that Eden’s gift and ability to talk to the trees, as well as heal the earth, is one of the rare Tratchar. The power to aid in the renewal of life, is only half of what the fates have destined for Eden.
Gabriel is once again sent on a journey to aid the King and his reluctant mate, is sent in search of her missing extended family. The King has a plan to reunite the reluctant lovers. Separation for the life-mates is difficult, and Eden still refuses to accept Gabriel as her soul/her heart. Eden’s need to aid with the sick and dying trees, drains her power and energy, which leaves her emotional and exhausted. She needs her life-mate, but by not accepting their bond, her true powers, have not manifested, and she grows weaker every day. It is only when she discovers another like herself, does the true meaning of family and life reveal.
Gabriel is a short story about destiny, fate, family and the power of love. M A Abraham writes from the heart about the Elves that she has created from her heart. A long history of morals and norms are addressed, although some are reluctant for change. The joining of two life-mates brings with it a revelation and a power that has not been seen in centuries, and the discovery of an another will aid the Elves in ways that only multiply with each bonded pair. I enjoyed Gabriel’s story and I have no problem recommending GABRIEL and M A Abraham’s ELVEN CHRONICLES series.
One of the main reasons I love the fantasy genre so much is for its epic worlds and descriptions. The adventures have a monumental feeling with a wonderful lore supporting the main story arc. That is exactly what I got when I read Gabriel.
I came across this book because I joined its Blog Hop that was hosted by Innovative Online Book Tours. The author, Miss Abraham, wrote my very first author guest post on my blog, Journey with Words; and after reading the book’s excerpt I knew I wanted to read the full story.
The tale revolves around Gabriel, the Chief of the Elven Military Forces, and his destined bride to be Eden, a free spirited Elven maiden that prefers to spend her days from tree to tree and fighting just like her brothers instead of conforming to the expected role she, as a woman, is supposed to fill. The couple’s conflict develops because Gabriel is used to be followed to the last word without hesitation while Eden is used to not follow anyone’s orders. Eden is a strong female character, one that is more than capable to go head to head with the most stubborn character of the book, Gabriel.
I did have a problem with the book at first, since the elven society in general has a slight air of male chauvinism that after a while it was beginning to rub me off the wrong way.
There is a constant statement that was driving me mad, every time that Eden excelled at something it is looked upon by the male characters with such shock, that it was beginning to wear thin. Her success was more impressive than normal because she is a woman. One of the first comments of this sort comes from Eden’s own father:
"I understand. I know Eden can be difficult. She has never followed any path a normal Elven maiden would have. She has always been one to make her home in the trees and her love of weapons was something encouraged by myself. It seemed a smart thing to do at the time. I was already training my son Lociel and she was just another student. It was a time of war and she needed to be able to defend herself. C'Liandra would have rather died than touch a weapon. Eden, On the other hand, is an exceptional fighter, especially for a woman." (Gabriel, pp. 29)
Now don’t get me wrong, Laurent –Eden’s father– loves her very much, but the mentality is there. However, as the series progresses there begin to be a switch in the balance empowering the women of the story that made me stick to the book until the very end. There is a good movement in the works and I only hope that it continues throughout the rest of the series.
The bottom line is that I enjoyed this book quite a lot. It’s a great fantasy, one that I recommend to anyone who loves the genre, and one that I definitively want to read the next book from.
Gabriel by M.A. Abraham is the first book in her Elven Chronicles series. This review is non spoiler and talks about the story, as well as the writing by new author M.A. Abraham.
I have not read a many stories regarding Elves, so this was a new road for me. M.A. Abraham takes us on a journey of a romance that was going to be a difficult path for the destined couple. The main characters and story in Gabriel were different from the usual romance, as they seemed totally incompatible to each other. From the moment we met Eden, I liked her, but I too thought she needed to be tied down. lol At first, I was not crazy about Gabriel, but as time went on, I got to like him a lot. I thought they made a great couple, and Eden was really a hoot. But then when she came into her powers (Tratchar), she settled and became an equal life mate and partner to Gabriel. The world created by M.A. Abraham was different, and very interesting. I thought she created some excellent characters, and you can see future stories coming out of this first book. Marious was a fun character, and you know near to the end, he is the next book. Then there are some other good characters that I would love to learn more of such as, Haylo and Larek, C'Liandra and King Daroth, and the new girl we have yet to meet, whom must be destined for Marious.
M.A. Abraham takes us into this world, with elves that have different and unique powers, but most importantly, she takes on journey of pure romance. This is all about Gabriel and Eden, their romance, and their journey to discover their bond, and to save the land they live in. M.A. Abraham is a fresh and interesting new author, with a wonderful imagination. She gives a new meaning to romance. I enjoyed Gabriel very much. If you love a pure romantic story, Elves, fun characters, and a fantasy world, look no further then Gabriel.
WHY do always the best books have to have such ugly covers? Please, just don't stop reading this book because of this as the story is just amazing.
Amazingly well written, the story captivated me since the first page. I had been looking for ages for an author who could be able to write a meaningful story, I just needed something different, original. I was so sick of all the paranormal romance books about brotherhoods with different powers who save the world... I just needed a change of pace. Also, every book I have been reading lately in the genre were not well connected to the previous installments... All this new authors just don't take all the installments into consideration when planing a new series. Most installments can be read separately and while you see the links between the characters, you don't get that feeling of something mayor going on. I missed that feeling.
BUT THIS AUTHOR GAVE ME EVERYTHING I WANTED. The feeling of a new world, of powerful beings with an unknown and interesting possible destiny, AN AMAZING MAIN COUPLE, lot of romance, a superb plot and much, much more. I will definitely keep reading this series, actually I'll start next book right away.
I would rate this book with 5 stars if there wasn't for the constant feeling like something was missing. Probably it was that it was a first book in a new series, which I usually have trouble with.
well written book cant wait for more books to come from this inspiring author I found this book to be an extremely captivating book, couldn’t put it down! The story line was excellent I quite enjoyed the unexpected twists and expertly written characters who had interesting and captivated personalities. A definite must have for people who love to read. I will love to see what the author M.A Abraham will have coming for us in the future.i would have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters in this novel.I could write forever about this novel the characters, and personalities make it seem like its just flowing through your mind when you are reading this book and its like watching a well written book! I loved the ending(sarcasm here)...to be continued.... eerrrgg. i believe that I will thoroughly enjoy anything that will come after in what I hope will be a long and bountiful career for M.A Abraham. for this book i will have to say that yes! definitely yes I will recommend this book to everyone and anyone that i happen to come across. I have read it twice already and it gets better with each reading.
I got lost within the pages of this here story. So completely and wonderfully lost. Such a sweet elven tale with excitement, romance, adventure and magic! A definite must read for any fans of the genre that enjoy a great story that brings everything to life :)
Eden is one tough cookie! I absolutely LOVE her! She’s a free spirited and kind female that has an enormous list of fine qualities.
Gabriel, I did not love at first. But I quickly grew to adore him once I understood his true feelings and true self. He is an amazing male specimen that is adored and honored throughout the lands. He deserves to be tortured. I mean loved and happy ;)
Together these two are an amazing team, couple. They complete one another to absolute perfection and complete tasks for their land and people that no other possibly could. True mates, one soul, true love and complete utter happiness. LOVE IT! I look forward to where M.A. will bring us in the next of the series!
I haven't read too many books of elves and the ones I read were portraying elves as evil or at least not very nice. Gabriel's book opened another world which portrays elves in a totally different light, as any other supernatural beings, with the good and the bad. I really enjoyed the book, with it's complex and varied characters and at the same time easy to read, just enough descriptive scenes without getting overwhelmed. I look forward to the next ones in the series. I highly recommend the book, even if you are not into elven books.
this by far is one of the best Elven stories I have read in quite awhile. Gabriel sets out on a mission to find a mate for his king. instead he finds the beautiful Eden who is wild., lovely and happens to speak with trees! If you love Elves., this is a story for you. The style of Ms Abrahams writing will keep you addicted and wanting more. on to book two I go.
What a great book. It was about reunion and rejoice after the dark days that took the Elven people apart.. And Now its time for the people to come back for their friends and family and most of all their Home.
In that reunion, Life Mates have met includes Gabriel and Eden. And Eden. LoL That lady keeps surprising me again and again and doing the unexpected things. xD!!..But what I loved the most was how the story was written.. and how quickly the thoughts were taken by the characters, It was almost like watching a T.V. M.A. Abraham didn't waste a time for other unnecessary thoughts. And more than that.. It was acceptance.. every one of those Elves accepted part of who and what they are.. Like Eden, she fought it the bond of a Life Mate but accepted she was Trachtar, C'Liandra, She happily accepted the King the moment he asked...
It was such a beautiful world you'v created M.A. And Iiiii think thats what Earth should have been =D.. (Just saying). ;D.
I’m always looking for fantasy-romance books, particularly ones with faerie elements, so of course the synopsis appealed to me. But to be fair—that was all that appealed to me once I downloaded the ebook. I tried very hard to enjoy this book, but it was such a disappointment.
1. Big let down for women. 2. Abusive relationships. 3. Boring characters. 4. Basically no plot.
The writing wasn’t awful and the sex scenes were pretty nice, but other than that…this was sadly a big waste of my time. If you’re looking for a book like this, perhaps try The Lord of the Fading Lands by C. L. Wilson. // Review here.
GABRIEL is the first book and series for new author M A Abraham. I found the storyline to be intriguing and the characters very interesting, although I enjoyed the book very much, I would have loved to learn more about Gabriel and Eden. Gabriel is a story about fate, family, destiny and above all the power of love, where you actually feel drawn into their world. I would give this a 5 star rating.
This book was a quick read. Gabriel is Elf that has commanded people all of his adult life. Eden is an Elf that walks to her own set of drums. When Eden falls into Gabriel's arms the drama begins. It finally takes Gabriel realizing that he cannot command Eden to love him but must let her come to her own realization that the love is destined and cannot be abandon. This is a new author that holds a lot of promise.
This is a wonderful book and i could not put it down..Eden is a wonderful but stubborn Elf..and Gabriel is a Warrior with a soft hart..I give it 5 stars..I love it and cant wait to read more From M.A.Abraham..and Her Elf's..
This is a excellent book I am looking forward to the others. It keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what is next to happen. I literally couldn't put it down.
I really enjoyed the premise of this book. The characters were interesting and the storyline intriguing. I love the characters, but I must say I wanted to know more about them. What makes them tick and so forth. There are only two things I would like to have seen done. More time spent learning about Gabriel and Eden. More time regarding the development of their relationship. I felt their relationship was rushed then torn apart, then tacked back together. Even by the end I felt sorry for Gabriel to have been stuck with Eden. To be honest I didn't like Eden's character very much because of her lack of respect towards everyone and everything except nature. She came off very selfish and immature except all she wanted to do is give to nature. Yet she had her defining moments, when she gave to another one of her tears. That gave back to her character, which seemed to redeem her. Yet once again she gave and gave to the trees, willful towards Gabriel, putting her life and the unborn children at risk. Hell I was ready to get the elven rope and tie her up myself.
Gabriel on the other hand, as domineering as he begins and obstinate in his own right. He softens enough to allow Eden the freedom she flat out is going to take whether he likes it or not. This makes for an interesting insight into his character.
I would have liked a bit of closure to Gabriel before hitting a cliff hanger - to be continued. Of course I will be reading the next installment, but not because I want to see the closure between Gabriel and Eden, but because I like the world she's created and I want to know more about the people in it.
I do want to mention that I found it difficult to read because of the formatting. I bought this on Kindle and I'm not sure if there are issues with the conversion process. Some sentences were tacked on other sentences with no space between the period. Some paragraphs seemed to go on forever. I hope the next book will be free of these formatting errors.
It is always difficult to take the first step in any venture. Many of us don’t—so we dream our dreams, always wishing we had the guts, the nerve, the time to write our first book and to publish.
Debut novelist, Mary Ann Abraham did take the first step. She had the support and belief of friends who wanted her to succeed. And this my aspiring authors, makes all the difference to a writer.
I won the first three books of The Elven Chronicles. After reading this first one, I am definitely set to continue the rest of the series, particularly since cliffhangers need resolution. Her story captured my interest.
In my opinion, this book was an excellent beginning to a writing career. Most writers are not born, they hone their skills through years of writing. The story took place in a very creative and real setting, albeit fanciful. The character development was such that I readily cheered Eden in her quest to take control back in her life. When she met another woman who didn’t understand how to fight back in her quest of freedom, she helped her know it was a matter of just saying no and sticking to her beliefs.
Punctuation, in many places, was misplaced or mistakenly used. The dialog didn't always ring true when the speech pattern would shift to modern vernacular. This, of course, doesn’t take from the story's creativity, yet these details would better the reader's experience.
I feel the story would have benefitted having greater and deeper conflict taking the story beyond its simplicity. More action which ratchets up the tension and arc of the story itself would, I suspect, have caught my attention more solidly.
M.A. Abraham weaves a magical spell that takes you into an elven kingdom in a time for peace. But change is in the air.
So, cue our main character's. Gariel..what to say about him. I thought he was a little closed off in the beginning. He seemed a little controlling in fact I could easily see him as a normal person with a control issue.
Still though, he wasn't the worst I have seen, it was clear he cared for Eden as he softened towards her.
Eden.. I didn't like her at all. Any character that doesn't seem to care at all about their unborn child is automatically going into a hate box. She just seemed selfish and immature, I seriously thought Gabriel could do much better then her. But then again the heart wants what the heart wants.
I enjoyed this book a lot, I am always a fan of cliff hanger ending's, especially when it is so obvious that another book is in the works.
The only thing I would have liked to see done differently was that it seemed so fast paced. I didn't get a really good feel of the relationship, it just seemed like it was kinda there. The character's as well, it was hard to relate to them because it didn't feel like I got to know them at all.
Gabriel is the author MA Abraham's first book. The book takes place after hundreds of year of wars in the Elven world. Now is the time of peace, happiness, family reunions and of course love.
Book one is the story of Gabriel Eagle Claw, The Lord High General of the Elven world and Eden his beautiful independent Life Mate, who is also, a powerful Guardian of the Forest.
This is my first book about Elve's and I was not disappointed. I didn't know what to expect, but Ms. Abraham painted a beautiful picture in my mind with her words of Elve's and Fae, beautiful villages and woodland forest. I was taken on an enchanted journey, were I met amazing an sometimes funny Elf and Fae characters, that I wanted to know more about. I felt like I was actually their in the story watching Gabriel and Edens love develop and grow. What a wonderful couple. Their are a few twist and surprise's in the story that I didn't see coming and at time I was wondering how is Ms.Abraham going to pull it all together, but she did!! This is a very well written story. WELL DONE MS. ABRAHAM!!! I highly recommend this book and I can't wait for the next book in The Elven Chronicles!!!
This is a great first book in a new series from new author. My only complaint is that first half of a book I needed more dialogue. It felt like that we went through that first half too fast without getting to know them (Eden, Gabriel) and the world that was described better. This is the reason for my rating. The other half was amazing and I can't wait for the second book to come out. My complaint is not to make author feel bad since she did great job, it's just a slight push in giving us one step more which she did with the second part of the book. Very satisfying read and would highly recommend.
I loved everything about this book . The characters were wonderful and Eden and Gabriel really had the sparks flying . I loved the way they were brought together. You meet some really great characters that will be in future books which I very much plan to buy. I highly recommend this book. Frean Lucero
Gabriel is the first book in the Elven Chronicles and it takes place after 500 years of a ravaging war with demons.
Gabriel Egale Claw, High Lord General of the Light Elven Forces, a fierce warrior and friend of King Daroth, is having a hard time adjusting to life again since the war has ended. King Daroth, who is also Gabriel's friend, has asked him to go and bring the kings Life Mate (so they can be bonded), her family and all the people that hid in the valley during the war. Gabriel's Life Mate, Eden, also happens to be the sister of the future queen, will be among them. He's not very keen on having a Life Mate until he meets her. She's a beauty, but he thinks of her as a spitfire, willful, obstinate and a brat.
Eden is a very special elf and she knows that she is the Life Mate of Gabriel. She thinks he's very handsome but is in no hurry to become bonded as his Life Mate. Thinks he's too controlling and restrictive. She's used to doing and going where and when she wants with no restrictions. They are constantly butting heads and it's fun to see who will win the battle of wills!
The author weaves such a fascinating story with such fascinating characters. Interesting learning about the Elven people and their culture. Has romance, suspense, drama and humor. Definitely reading the series. If you enjoy reading about Elves, you'll enjoy this story very much.
i got this book from the author for a honest review. What a great start to a series. Gabriel is returning home after 500 years of being at war. His friend King Daroth sends him on a quest to find and retrieve the elven people that have left and bring them home along with his Lifemate/Queen C'Liandra he has only seen in visions. Gabriel on his way finds his own lifemate in Eden, the future Queens sister. Their first meeting was really funny, with Gabriel's nephew Lord Marious shooting Eden out of a tree and her landing in his arms. Eden is a real spitfire and has Gabriel admiration with her fighting skills. She really challenges him. I really loved this story and cant wait to read the others in this series
An unexpected treasure. I just couldn't come out of this book. I fell in love with the characters and didn't stop readying until the end. My only comment would be the lack of details on the world were the story is happening. We don't know it's name, it's history ... Adding that would have make it perfect in my opinion.
Gabriel by M.A. Abraham is very well done. There are a lot of characters, so it is very full and fast paced. Lots of drama, humor and suspense. This is one of the best Elf books that I have read.
Whew! This one feels long. Not too bad but could have been better for sure. The characters are intriguing but underdeveloped. The plot too simple though it does have the potential to be charmingly simple it needs a lot of work. Sure, trees are important and nature healers are cool but without a sound writing and other intrigue to up it, it's just silly. The idea of a wild heroine is catching and some scenes can even be funny but it failed in the execution.
I was set to like this just to prove I'm not fickle by wanting more of the happy-ever-after type but I found here it's not enough on it's own. There's nothing interesting to keep reading the next one though I probably will read it since I've ordered book 2 at the same time. It's about the same tree problem though so maybe not.
Ok, so I have mixed feelings about this One - I generally don’t bother reading books with less than 4 star or close to.... it had many of things I love in a book so gave it a go...
Firstly the main story - healing trees - was not the most interesting and nothing ever really happened. The back story - ie who they were fighting - I still have no clue - or why the trees were dying or why they were so important is also never fully explained
I really liked Gabriel - I just felt like he was emasculated the whole way through - the strong, alpha male hero whose mate was constantly mean to him made him look like a victim - I don’t mind a strong female lead who challenges the lead male but I just found their relationship and build up to lacked substance and depth - one minute she hated him / the bond - the next she was with him without any real build up to or reason why she changed her mind - it didn’t leave me invested in the relationship or identifying with any of the characters - a Shame really :(
I finished it. Not too much more to say. The quality of the dialogue and inner monologues hurt my enjoyment of the book. And the formatting made it difficult to know when the author was switching POVs. I really wanted to love the book, but in the end I only kind of liked the characters and the world.
I liked the characters, but a lot of the book just seemed to ramble around. Sometimes I didn't understand what was really going on. Maybe it's explained later in the series, but I'm not interested enough to keep going.
