VERY GOOD: The characteristics of a 4 star book include: a great story; I loved the characters; and there was an interesting plot and unique story elements; there may have been a few odd things kept the story from being amazing. I would read it again and I would recommend it to a friend.Rating's Breakdown:
Quality of writing: SolidMy Thoughts:
Pace: Even and easy
Characters: Very interesting. All of the characters in the story, including the "bad guys", had interesting personalities and even more interesting motivators.
Plot development: Very good. Detailed and full of interesting twists and turns.
Story line: Good. A very clever introduction to a new series.
Enjoyability: Enjoyable.
Heat Level: Simmering
One of the Hashishins constantly called Ashor "Shaitan", a nickname that absolutely enraged Terek. Problem was, the reader never found out WHY the nickname enraged him so or what it even meant. A brief explanatory line or two about the name would have been helpful. "Shaitan" was used seven times within the story but it wasn't explained so the reader had no idea why it was just an antagony for Terek.Challenge #2:
I preface my comment by stating that I received this review copy from Smashwords so my issue could be a result of where it was acquired from rather than something not being available to the reader at all. Please note that neither of these challenges precluded my overall enjoyment of the story.
As I read the story, terms and expressions were used that I had no clue what they meant -- akhrian, kem-seki, seichim. I didn't find the glossary until the very end of chapter thirty-two but did not even know that it was even there because it was not included as part of the table of contents. I would suggest moving the glossary to the front of the book so that the reader can know what things are before they start reading about them and/or add it as part of the table of contents so the reader can navigate to it to find out what a word means.
