Second Chance is not your run of the mill romance. It is funny, romantic and heartwarming. Set in the 1800’s, you would think that the women would be young, naive and submissive and the men tall, dark and handsome. But Christina Paul’s heroine is full of fire and an entertaining and lively character. And the relationship that grows between Kathryn and Graydon feels so very real.

The author has woven a romance with a backdrop of intrigue and suspense. A kidnapped girl, villainous characters and the secret service of the 1800’s! The plot adds to the story rather than takes away from it, and you can’t help but be glued to the book from the word go! I particularly enjoyed the involvement of the entire family in this romance and each character has their own quirky charm. I just realized that Christina has another book about one of the characters in this story. So excited about that as he was one of my favorite characters in this book…can’t wait to read that! A well written and engaging story!

Beautifully written Georgian Era aristocratic historical romance that tells the tale of Lady Kathryn and Lord Graydon. While visiting her husband's grave, Lady Kathryn finds a bleeding, unconscious gentleman. Hiding him at her country estate, she nurses the man back to health to learn he was shot while trying to rescue his niece, Anna. When his family comes to claim him, Lady Kathryn becomes involved in a tale of intrigue as she helps them complete their mission. From the countryside to London, they pursue their goal as they decipher all information from dockside "pub chat" to government records to discover Anna's whereabouts. Along the way, Lady Kathryn falls in love with her handsome Lord Graydon, daring to hope he could someday offer his heart in return.

Fast paced read, full of intrigue, with wonderful characters in a lovely historical setting.

Why is there so much telling in this book?

I want to be shown how someone acts, feels, talks. I want to be in on a conversation, not be told a conversation has been had and completely miss the opportunity to connect with the characters through dialogue. I don't want to be told how a scene took place, I want to be in the scene and watch it play out in my mind. I don't want to be told how a character feels, I want to be shown how they feel - I want to feel what they feel! How on Earth am I able to connect with characters and the story if the author is not letting me experience it?

The way the story reads is too fast paced, lacks any chance of a connection and completely lacks technique. I hated the switch of POV's as well; from one person to the next in a space of a sentence - along with all the lack of "showing" and it was just a jumbled, shitty mess. The easy, poetic flow that should be in a story was no where to be seen and I eventually couldn't handle it anymore.

So in conclusion, this book was just lacking in everything. DNF at 73%.

A Second Chance by Christina Paul is by far the juiciest and most addictive historical romance that I have ever read. The leading female character will draw readers in unlike any other. I have finally found a well-rounded leading female who isn't flawlessly unreal and one who intrigues me more by every sentence. Christina Paul has beautifully captured the historical time period down to every detail. The language and scenes are vivid. Readers will feel as though they were watching the scenes in life than just reading them off the pages. A Second Chance is so much more than just two strangers meeting and given a chance to be together...it is about more than one character, given a second chance at having the life they always wanted but didn't think they would get. Readers will instantly be pulled into this romantic yet funny tale as it unfolds.

Inside A Second Chance, Christina Paul immediately introduces readers to how women's lives were so easily controlled by men. In the beginning, not only was one woman forced to love a man she didn't love but so was that one man forced to love her as well. From there they went on to make a life out of what life tossed their way. Soon, Kathyrn's life changes once more...this time her husband is gone and she's left to raise her two boys. Time goes by and they are grown...then life decides to toss another unexpected outcome her way. Kathryn is soon led to a man who is injured badly. Right away, she goes about saving his life. While she helps him get back to health, she finds herself attracted to the handsome stranger. Once he heals, she and her staff find out who he is and what happened. That's when her life goes from peaceful quiet to chaotic and interesting. Can Kathryn finally find the love she always wanted and what other surprises lay in store? Readers will love this exciting read from the first page and will not part with it until they finish reading it. A hot, sexy, yet sweet story that will forever, sweep readers off their feet. Danger, adventure, and romance await...I highly recommend this fascinating novel to readers worldwide.

When the Widow Kathryn finds a wounded man, Graydon, on her estate, she doesn't realize that her life is about to change permanently. Add in a kidnapped niece, a vengeful father, and mysterious missions for the government and you will find adventure in early 1800s England. This traditional historical romance is on the fast track to take you from polite society into the seedier side of life as love struggles to conquer all.

This was a typical historical romance without any special characters or plot to make it stand out.
