"Jamie lifted his head from Michael’s shoulder, grinning at their manager. “You wanna join us, Elliot?”
Elliot crossed his arms in front of his chest, feigning impatience, although he really did want to join them, in more than one sense of the word. Even though Christian had promised to turn him into a vampire some day, Elliot knew that Jamie was just teasing him. They weren’t going to bite him, injecting the venom into his veins that would cause him to become one of them, at least not anytime soon. They needed someone who could move about freely in the daylight, without slapping on a mile-thick layer of sunscreen and all the necessary accoutrements – hats, scarves and sunglasses – and that person was him. He was their Renfield. “You’re on in an hour,” he told them. “Get ready.”
They all remained where they were, still smoking. Elliot’s eye fell on Blue, who was holding a Marlboro in one hand, the other twirling Michael’s hair around her fingers. She felt his gaze on her and gave him a challenging stare. His face flushing, he dropped his gaze. If he became one of them, would he enjoy their orgies? He wasn’t gay, but then he knew that both Jamie and Christian had been straight during their human lives. He wasn’t sure about Michael, the most effeminate of the foursome. But words like “gay” and “straight” seemed to have no meaning for these creatures. They were beautiful, immoral and in love with themselves.
I couldn't put this down. Good read; great story arc. Love the shout out to Pamela Des Barres, among other 80s culture icons! I highly recommend this debut novel and expect great things of Rose Mambert.
Maybe the rating should be closer to 3 1/2 than four stars, as Mambert's short (212 pages) novel suffers from a number of structural problems, the worst of which being following too many characters before finally deciding whose story to tell, and not introducing either of the two major antagonists to the band of vampires until halfway through the book. Still, her vision of life (well, unlife) as a member of a famous rock band that also happens to be made up of four bloodthirsty vampires was compelling (in a darkly seductive way), and all major characters are given interesting character quirks and backstories that keep the reader interested in even the worst of the monsters. I do wish Mambert would have spent more time on the music angle other than name-dropping -- Who writes the vampires' songs? How do they feel when they're up on the stage? Also Warning - Graphic sex and violence - these are not your sparkly kind of vamps. Still, in the end, Recommended for fans of the genre, with all the reservations as per above.
This is your basic vampires form a rock band scenario which means it would be so easy to fall into cliche. Instead Rose Mambert gives us complex characters (some of whom may be simple minded but that doesn't make them simple) who are heading for a rendezvous with destiny over the choices they have made. It's violent, sexy, bloody (of course), with a good feel for the indie rock scene. There's also a fresh spin on vampire lore so that everything you think you know on the subject may not work here nor are you likely to guess who lives and who dies as the characters race towards the climax. A fun, entertaining read.
