Sometimes, there are streaks of misfortune in our lives. It seems like Murphy's Law comes true- anything that can go wrong, will. Lost jobs, cheating spouses, monetary losses. There comes a point where even the most un-superstitious person begins to think to themselves: "Maybe I'm cursed." Have You Been Hexed? Is a guide written to help the reader sort through their misfortunes, learn about hexes & curses, and what you can do to stop yourself from becoming a victim of intentional ill will.

This book serves its title purpose: recognizing and breaking curses and & hexes. I found that author Alexandra Chauran explains the topic in an easy to understand, non-judgemental tone that makes it easier to fully grasp what she has to say.

The best part of this book, in my opinion, is the perspective. I was honestly expecting a book that says "oh my gosh, you're cursed! Now that you've bought my book, I can help!"

But, that wasn't the tone of this guide at all. In fact, Chauran goes to great lengths to explain how rare curses are, and how many different forms of bias there are when it comes to the self-identification of such spells.

Chauran also offers advice, instructions, and tips for identifying & rectifying these magickal maladies. Whether your poison be tarot cards, aura reading, or even pendulums, Chauran uses great language to explain the tools of the trade so that even the most unseasoned practitioner can understand what is being talked about.

Though this book covers only a very specific niche of magickal woes, it is a highly useful guide into righting wrongs that have been cast. This is a book that every magick practitioner should have on their shelf as a reference when needed. That being said, if you're not a practitioner, don't be afraid of picking this up.

Thank you to Netgalley and Llewellyn Worldwide, Ltd. for my copy of this book. This review can also be found on my new blog, Bitches n Prose.

This book has a cheezy title, but the book itself isn't cheezy. I would give this book five stars just for writing style alone. It's lively and readable. It also brings to light the shadow side of magic that is, in my opinion, practiced often enough to need some kind of attention to be given to it. I bought this book...new, which I hardly ever buy books new...not because I or anyone I knew suffered from hexes, but because I met a few people in the past (and I anticipated a few more in the future,) that asked me if they were hexed. With the tiny information I had, I didn't really know how to answer them. Now I have at least an idea on what to tell them.
So why did I give this book three stars instead?
Well, a number of things.
(1) First, that irritating leaning on the Law of Attraction, which was a little too much for me. The Law of Attraction has been marketed to the very foundations in exclusion of all the other known metaphysical laws. No one tells people that even though the Law of Attraction may exist, it can only be used effectively by those who are naturals at it, so it misleads a lot of people to attempt things that are out of their range to attempt, thus getting them into trouble. This is where I have to say positive thinking isn't for everyone, just like everything else. It's not a cool idea to trust these laws as if a person has to believe in them or else. It's not a belief system; they have to be tried out before they can be trusted.
(2) The author did mention the other metaphysical laws as discussed by Isaac Bonewits in Real Magic, but she doesn't give him credit for him or his book in her bibliography. For such an important work as Bonewits' writings, it's a major mistake to leave out this mention so others can look it up for themselves. So I'm citing this reference for her.
(3) Her disturbing trust in the Authorities (as if they can be trusted to follow through in cases like these mentioned in the book without screwing it up.) I hope the author is keenly aware that the Authorities are rather saturated, either by skeptical and secularist influence in some States, or by fundamentalist religious influence in others, to be of much help. As we have discovered with some of the Asian and European communities here in this country (United States), not even they could trust outside intervention and so had to depend on their own to take care of business, forming their own systems of judgement to decide disputes. The magical community might be better off doing the same thing.
(4) From my point of view, some of her information might be off. But here, I may have to say that her experiences might be a little different from mine, too. For example though; the mention of the charm Abracadabera. It was supposed to be written starting from the bottom up rather than from the top down. And from what I understand, it was not meant for removing hexes anyway, but for removing illnesses.
Also, what I find unsettling is that she tells about how to "cut cords" with a person that may have thrown a curse at you, such as an ex....but without telling you what to do with the leftover vacuum. Nature abhors a vacuum, so that hole has to be willingly filled with something or someone else of equal or greater value, or the situation just might return. It would have been nice if she would have said that.
Overall, as good as the author's writing style is, I would guess that she seems to have a mixture of experience in Wicca and Hoodoo or something similar. She writes with the edginess of a red-lighter, but her advice is much of what I would anticipate from a New Age white-lighter....It's an interesting style. I like her, even as I question some of what she puts out there.
What it looks like from here though is that a lot of psychology is put into play in answering the question if a person is hexed or not. What she says is most of the time a person isn't, but rather it's a smart person who looks at a sudden run of bad luck in his or her life and overthinks their situation, when these are nothing more than random acts, without the motivation of any force of energy driving them like herding cats. In a way, it's disappointing to read, considering the romantic...and scary...reputation magic received from such places as the arts and media, so it does take that romanticism and mystery out of the situation. But it's for a good cause, because it gives a sobering sense of what's really going on and gives practical advice on how to take care of it.
In spite of my criticisms, the book's not bad overall. I would suggest to get it and put it on your bookshelf for future reference, but be proactive and do some more of your own research on the subject.
As a final note, I may disagree on her suggesting professionals offering curse-removal services for absolutely free (after all, it is energy work, people), but I do agree that it shouldn't have to cost an arm, a leg, and the sacrifice of your first-born son. Totally watch out for those famous "psychic gypsy scams." However, if you don't do this for a living, by all means decide what you think is best, whether offering it free-of-charge, by donation, or whatever...just not the first-born kid, please....
So yeah, this book may not be the total answer, but it helps.

Think you've been hexed? This is a good resource for you.
Don't think you've been hexed, but looking for something to discuss the Law of Attraction, the power of words, and some techniques to amp up your good luck? Also the book for you.
Writing a paranormal fiction novel? Also the book for you. Remember: the truth can sometimes be more terrifying than fiction.

The book starts with confirming whether you've been hexed or not, offering several methods you can use to figure it out. (I learned quite a few things about my tarot cards here!)

If you're still not sure, there's a handy list of evidence that you're not hexed at all. I love this - as it gets your brain thinking alternatively. A subtle spin on things. (This is important later.) Scientific reasons explaining why people can logically believe they're hexed are also given - I think this is a plus at making these feel more like a scientific read, and less "woo-woo". While listing different types of thinking that can lead you to these beliefs, I noted the subtle use of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Yes, more science! The way you think does change your life - and can even change your luck.

A lot of the techniques and thoughts given in the book are useful to all - such as the ideas on changing your scripts, changing your thoughts, staying grounded, etc. Other things like how to remove a curse from objects, or how to exorcise a negative entity from a person are less likely to be needed. I had a few...critical thoughts... about the simplicity of exorcism, as that's something I've researched the methods used by different cultures, and this answer was a little lacking, but I do think it's a safe and practical choice for beginners.

Overall, I think this book reads a bit like a textbook. It's chock full of interesting information, but at times potentially a little dry. It's something that I could see people referencing for many different reasons, and I've actually already recommended it to a friend.

My five-star rating is based on the assumption that the information presented in this book is accurate. I don't know enough about magic to judge this for myself. Based on that assumption, in my opinion, this is a great reference for anyone who has experienced a string of misfortunes and is open-minded about the existence of hexes.

There's some guidance here about how to determine whether you've been hexed: what to look for, what tasks may be performed to test for hexes, and what circumstances indicate lack of a hex. There's also guidance about how to remove hexes and how to deal with psychics so you don't get cheated when it comes to determining whether you have been hexed and, if so, removing the hex. Should you determine that your misfortune is not the result of hex after all, there's also some guidance about how to deal with negative energy that may be causing your misfortune.

Overall, I found this to be a great reference for the lay-person. It uses understandable terms and presents logical steps for approaching the problem. Most of all, I appreciate the general focus of the book on, first, determining whether a hex exists before addressing it. A less cautious author might have jumped right into how to remove hexes, but the approach taken here seems more trustworthy.

Has your world fell apart suddenly and for no reason? Did you lost your job? Did a lover break-up with you out of the blue? Did the bank foreclose on your house? All of this in one day? Could this be a bout of bad luck? Or could it be much worse like perhaps a curse or a hex placed upon your person?

This book helps you understand what exactly is a hex and offers up some advice on how to cleanse yourself of these hexes. I found the book informative and a very interesting read. I learned to determine if I had been hexed or if it was nothing more than a run of bad luck. I also learned that not all psychics can be honest and may not only lead you to believe that they can only cleanse of these hexes by means of taking your money.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone who believes themselves cursed. This will be the book to help you understand and cleanse yourself of all negativity.

As an open-minded Christian, I found Alexandra Chauran's book to be clear, informative and all-inclusive regardless of your religious affiliations. She handles the topic of deity with sensitivity and makes it clear there is more than one way to approach any situation.

Reading it from a research perspective for an upcoming paranormal romance I'm working on, I was amazed at how intuitively she answered my questions as quickly as they formed in my mind.

The book was well written with step-by-step instructions for identifying, preventing and dealing with curses/hexes in a variety of situations including hexes on persons, groups or objects.

Alexandra has such a positive and uplifting spirit throughout that I found her book engaging and inspiring.

I'm interested in what she has to say on other topics and will search out more of her work.
