Mary O’Reilly #9

Twisted Paths

Rate this book
Gloria Foley turned off the light in the hallway and made her way slowly upstairs to bed. She paused at the doorway of her daughter’s bedroom and shook her head. It had been such an emotional day for all of them. She prayed she would have the strength to get them both through these treacherous teenaged years.

Slowly turning the knob on the bedroom door, she quietly opened it to check on her sleeping child. Through the narrow opening, she could see the bed was still made and no one was sleeping on it. She opened the door wider and saw the shadow on the far wall and her heart clenched. Screaming, she flung the door open and ran to the figure hanging from the thick electric cord suspended from the ceiling fan. “No,” she screamed, as she tried to lift the inert body up to relieve the pressure against her neck. “Nooooooo!”

The ghost of a teenager who committed suicide twenty years ago is haunting her family’s home. Can Mary link that death to the serial suicides of the girls who bullied her when she was alive?
And with Gary Copper still on the loose, Mary and Bradley are faced with the challenge of keeping the newest member of their family safe and sound.

I love the Mary O'Reilly Paranormal Mystery series! I look on Amazon once in awhile to see if there are any new books by Terri Reid and sure enough I looked the other day and found one! I cannot put these books down! I read it completely through, and now I'm ready for the next one! Going through withdrawls already!

Mary and Bradley have been searching for Bradley's daughter, Clarissa, and finally locate her and bring her home to live with them. While they are getting Clarissa settled Mary is trying to solve a 20-year old mystery of the suicide/murder of a young girl. This is the reason I had to keep reading; I had to find out whether it was a suicide or murder!

I do recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a good Paranormal Mystery!

I'm a little disappointed in this book, which is a shame because I really like this series. But, the sappy, saccharine perfection of everybody loving everybody is starting to get cloying and annoying. Yes, Mary O'Reilly is a kind, compassionate, great person but she is also a strong, independent woman and doesn't need the males around her trying to keep her in a safe, protective bubble all the time. Bradley's attitude, and even Ian's to a point, is starting to get on my nerves. Mary used to be a police officer, for heaven's sake. She is not a fragile, brittle flower that will crumble at a touch!

Clarissa's quick and unquestioning acceptance of Bradley as her father and her desire to call Mary "mom" so soon after Becca's death was a little unrealistic, in my opinion. The child was just too sweet and precious and innocent to be believable.

I almost wish Mary and Ian were an item instead of Mary and Bradley. I love the easy-going banter and interactions between her and the hunky Scottish professor more than the mushy, overly sweet scenes with the police chief. Stop with the passionate kisses and get married already! Why are you torturing yourselves? :)

Yay, Mike is back! That was one thing I really liked about the story. The ghostly fireman is one of my favourite characters.

The religious overtones and preachy tone of the book were another issue I had with it, which may or may not be a problem for other readers but was for me.

I hope the sick, perverted Gary Copper gets captured soon and gets his comeuppance. I'm getting a little tired of his continued unwelcome presence in Mary's life. Give her a break and let her cases with the various ghosts be the focal point of the series for a while instead of her constant vigilance and fear of Copper.

I liked the subplot of Hope Foley's suicide and that of the other young women as well, but found myself solving the mystery well before Mary and Ian did.

I'm sure I will continue on with this series, but I just hope some of the issues outlined above will be addressed in the subsequent books.

There is definitely something to be said for an author who can keep the reader entertained over the course of a series that is now nine novels and counting. I am continually surprised by the mysteries that Reid develops for Mary to solve and while I always think I have the ending figured out she takes it in another direction. Clarissa, Bradley's long-lost daughter, was a welcome addition to this novel and Mike as her guardian angel is perfect as I was disappointed when he crossed over in an earlier. I look forward to book ten in this series!

Not as good as her other ones. Silly dialog in places. The romantic aspect puts me in mind of a high school couple not 2 grown adults.

Nice

A cool ghost story. Loved it. Murder and mayhem with a twist. Of course, lots of love too.

On to the next adventure.

I LOVE this series. In all honesty, I have suffered for years from clinical depression, and was suffering from a very serious downturn. This series helped get me through. The friendship, the camaraderie, the family, the love and laughter, helped tremendously. It was extremely helpful in getting me to that turning point back to me.

I laughed till my belly hurt, then cried until I couldn't see the words. I felt anger and betrayal for those whose journey was suspended. I found redemption, grace, and, most of all, hope. I loved the ghosts/spirits (except for those malevolent ones), the mortals, the story lines and resolutions. I loved the lessons these stories conveyed, and the poignancy with which they were told.

I have several favorite characters, Mary and Bradley (and, by extension, Clarissa), being the foundation. Ian is someone I want to meet, and get to know, and just listen to him talk. Hopefully, he wears the black shirt (but don't tell Gillian I said that...it's strictly platonic, I swear). Mike. Dear Mike. I cried so hard for him for some reason, especially the role he was given. It was a sweetness that I didn't even know i was craving. I love Mike. I want Mike on my side. Always. Rosie & Stanley, such a opposites-attract couple, yet full of love. The O'Reilly clan. Can I move in with them?? Or maybe just visit Ireland with Sean??

I suspended all other reading until I got through the entire series, and feel as though these characters are my friends and family. Please, please, please, give me more!

Note: I would love to give this series 4 1/2 stars, or even 5, but the grammatical and punctuation errors just don't cut it for me. Miss Terri, your writing is superb. Let it be polished until it glows. Let me be your proofreader (beta reader?).

Better than the last book

This one was back to what I expect. It took awhile for Mary & crew to figure out what send obvious but it was a page turner. I like the introduction of Clarissa (a bit too seamlessly but...) & seeing !sry & Bradley in the role of parents. Super happy to have Mike back - he was missed in the last book.

Gary Copper is very cunning. Can't believe he's gotten so close to Mary and Clarissa. I'm glad the author hit on bullying. Devastating that a parent would do that to their child. Another great book in the Mary O'Reilly series.

Very good continuation of series

This mystery has a traumatized and crazy kid that impacts a lot of lives. Bradley is so sweet as a father. I wish we got more of Bradley in the books too. Clarissa is a very insecure child but totally understandable.

Lots going on here ..

Bradley brings his daughter home, Mary and Ian investigate a haunting and a murder ... in the meantime Maggie thinking Clarissa has taken her place with Mary and Bradley indulges in some schoolyard bullying... and more!

Good read.

You know I like how fast these books are. Mary and Bradley and Clarissa I’m trying to figure out how to live together and in between that Mary gets an old case that she ends up wanting to solve while still trying to heal and of course Gary’s in the picture as he is the villain

I can't get enough of this series. The mysteries are all different enough to keep it interesting, the cast of characters are likeable and entertaining, the stories are quick and easy reads and overall it's a great way to spend an afternoon in the world of Mary O'Reilly and friends.

Keep them coming!
