This is a sequel to ON A WING AND A DARE, but it's not necessary to read them in order.
Nineteen year old Nia is shocked when she is secretly offered the leadership of Third Barn. This new barn full of flying horses will need someone confident, experienced, and innovative, so why are both warring factions pursuing an untried girl? Suspicious that both sides want a puppet instead of a leader, Nia races to discover their secrets before making the biggest decision of her life.
Some of those secrets are unknowingly buried in the disconnected memories of a young groom named Owain. Terror and guilt haunt Owain’s dreams – and then a face from his nightmare arrives in High Meadow. Owain looks for answers in his past and uncovers a dangerous plot that could doom High Meadow's future. How can he foil the plot and save his people as well as the winged horses?

I have always had a soft spot for books about horses - and flying ones fills my love of fantasy as well. The people of High Meadow are trying to rebuild the population of flying horses after a horrible event (what I assume is book #1) leaves only a handful remaining. They have finally expanded to two successful barns, and there are rumors of a third - but many think it's too soon. When Nia, the potential new leader of third barn, starts to look closer she finds a whole lot of intrigue and political maneuvering for control. This part of the storyline was a little drawn out.
To counteract the slower moving intrigue side of the story, we have Owain and his history. His part of the story is a little more active than Nia's and adds the dash of excitement to keep things interesting. The stories weave together very nicely and couldn't be told without each other.
I would have liked to see more of the horses. The author gets so close to letting us really see their personalities, but never quite gets as far as I had hoped. There was a lot of potential to tap into the fun and eccentric personalities that I imagine these horses would have.
In the Winds of Danger is the beautiful follow up novel to Linda Ulleseit's "On a Wing and a Dare." The same characters that captured readers' hearts in the first book are now dealing with the turmoil that accompanies trying to rebuild a town and community, but readers will also meet a new group of characters in this book. The characters are deep and rich, and readers won't be able to help caring about them. Owain especially has a compelling backstory and a mystery that will keep readers turning pages. Nia is another new character that readers will find it hard not to root for, even if they want Emma and Davyd to win. This book doesn't have the same level of danger as the first book did with the horses being threatened by a strange illness, but the struggles of the characters and the plotting to gain power at the expense of the horses is an entertaining new aspect.
In the Winds of Danger is a beautiful follow up to book 1 in the Flying Horse Books, On a Wing and a Dare. Though you don't have to have read book 1, fans will not be disappointed. New characters take the focus of In the Winds of Danger, but characters from book 1 have carried over and we get a chance to see how they have fared in the years since they moved to High Meadow.
I loved the internal struggle Nia faced when she is offered Third Barn. As much as she wants to jump at the chance to lead the barn, she's smart enough to know that it can't be that easy. Her brains are what kept me reading her story. I constantly was trying to figure out what she was going to do and just as I began thinking she'd do one thing, something would happen and make me think that maybe she'd changed her mind.
Owain's storyline seemed much more active and allowed the reader to see more of Wales as he journeyed across the land to solve the mystery of his past. There was more movement to his story and it was easy to be drawn into his search for answers.
I am really looking forward to the next installment in the Flying Horse Books!
The characters from On a Wing and a Dare return in this next book in the Flying Horse Trilogy, along with some new ones you’ll want to get to know.
The situations are more mature as the characters have grown and the suspense and intrigue are palpable.
I was eagerly turning the pages, flying(pardon the pun) through this book, eager to return to the air with these magnificent winged steeds, and to meet and come to know the new cast of characters and the challenges they face.
The aerial sequences are so vividly written, I was once again pulled into the skies, feeling the wind stream past my face and whistling in my ears. A good thing I don’t have vertigo!
I seemed to connect more with the previous and new characters in this follow-up book. The story reads like it’s written for a more mature reader, not so much for middle grade. I suspect that’s because the story should mature as the characters do.
I’m deep into this series now and anticipate a grand finale in the final book of this trilogy.
Beautifully written, IN THE WINDS OF DANGER is a visually captivating story filled with tension, espionage, treachery, jealousy and a fight for power. Add Romance, skillfully penned characters and enchanted winged horses and you have a very entertaining read.
As always, Ulleseit's scenes are filled with marvelous visuals that put you right there on the dusty streets of High Meadow in each shop, barn, and household with sight, smell, and sound. Her characters have depth and are unique, each with compelling personalities, and the winged horses (my favorite scenes) are spell binding, and captivate me with their beauty and grace.

In the Winds of Danger is a great sequel to On a Wing and a Dare! Linda Ulleseit draws you into the world of medieval Welsh, the only exception being the numerous flying horses of course... :) The entire novel is filled with suspense and mystery. I look forward to reading the last in the trilogy.
A lot more happening then the first one but I still find the politics really boring and the focus is still on the people and not on the horses. I find it really hard to keep all the people in my head who they are and which barn they belong to. At least with the addition of new characters we got more exciting stories that move away from High Meadow and give an idea of what the rest of this world is like.
Horse book lovers rejoice! Another great, YA horse series hits the shelves and ereaders. When I was a young adult, there weren’t that many horse stories out there. Well, okay, there were a lot and I’d pretty much read them all, and it seemed like no more were going to be published. Fortunately that’s changed recently. Ms. Ulleseit builds a world set in the past in Wales where winged horses actually exist. They live only in a limited area and are severely endangered due to events in the previous book. In the Winds of Danger is the second book in the series, but it stands alone. I haven’t read the first one yet, though I will, but I don’t feel like I was missing anything by starting with the second.
The winged horses are cared for by dedicated grooms and riders, and every year the two barns compete in aerial games to help the patrons continue to fund the two barns. There used to be many more barns and horses and patrons but greed led to one evil man poisoning and killing many of the horses and riders. The two barns that survived are now strong and healthy, but rumors of a third barn starting up keep circulating. Prudent minds want to wait a few more years, but forces beyond their control are pushing for the third to happen sooner. The reasons are political, and control, and many of the things that tried to destroy the magnificent winged horses several years earlier. Will the riders be able to start the third barn without losing control of the future of their precious animals? And will they be able to prevent the politics that ruined them the first time?
This book is full of intrigue, a little action, bravery and really damn cool horses. This is a great YA horse book that I’d recommend to everyone who loves horses or who ever dreamed of flying with Pegasus.
A story carry on as Nia will be appointed as the Third Barn Leader. She is a rider of Eira, one of the old flying mare. Owain seeks his sister, and finds the mistress. Very interesting fantasy story.
