Rate this book
John Palmer hasn't felt like a real man since he was injured during combat in Iraq. Though not content with his new life, he is mostly adapting, just like the other vets at the Lost ‘N’ Found Investigative Service. Shannon Murphy wasn't really looking for love when she hired on at LNF, but finds herself hopelessly attracted to the sex-on-wheels former Marine, John Palmer. The man is grumpy and nearly impossible to work with, but his brand of masculinity appeals to her on a basic level. Soon Shannon is wondering just what it would take for John to want her the way she wants him.

When an old enemy tries to settle a vendetta against Shannon, John insists on protecting her. He moves into her house, fanning the spark of attraction into a blaze. But the danger continues to escalate. Will the connection that they've found survive when they’re thrust into a fight for their lives?

A sequel to The Embattled Road

This was such an amazing book Photobucket I loved it! And I can't wait for the new ones to come out!!!! I must read Chad and Duncan ASAP!!!!!!

The story

This is set six years after the prequel, The Embattled Road.
The Lost ‘N’ Found Investigative Service is doing well, having lots of cases and recruiting more war veterans.
John, Chad and Duncan have moved on with their lives, and are as close as brothers :)
The plot here is actually about Shannon, who works as their office manager. She's had a crush on John for ages but he only sees her as a friend (or so she thinks Photobucket ).
One day she sees a Pepsi can in her house, one that she definitely didn't drink, she gets freaked out and calls John :)
With her two suspiciously flat tires, and now the Pepsi, they realise someone is stalking her, probably the same man who went to jail for attacking her brother a few years ago.
That leaves John moving into her house for surveillance, and the two of them getting closer...

The suspense part of the story was good, dealing with the stalker dude and all, but for me the spotlight went to the emotional part.
I was dying to read Palmer because of the prequel, and what he went through, and the book totally delivered on that point. But I'll talk about him a bit later :D

The writing here is great, we have a few sex scenes and a lot of emotional struggling, and I loved it :)

The characters - we get a quick view of everyone, even a few more characters that I hope will get their own books :D but John is the one that shines through in this book :)

The only thing that didn't work for me (and that's why the 4 stars) was the constant crying from the heroine.
Well, not really crying but having "tears in her eyes". In almost every scene in the book, for some reason tears come to her eyes and it goes on and on, sometimes two times in one scene the tears come to her eyes, you'd think she'd cry and get it over with but no. Oh well. For some reason it bothered me, and even though I absolutely LOVED everything else in this book, it was just wonderful, the tears made me give it a star less. I actually counted LOL, this is a pretty short book, but the word "tears" appears 42 times :) so you can imagine...

I have to admit, before I started these, I was really hoping that the wounded heroes would get their recoveries, and in this case that John will lose the wheelchair. But this book just made me realise that in real life, there ARE wounded people who never recover, who learn to deal with the handicap, and who are just as normal as the rest of us.
This book was realistic in that way, and I applaud it. It's just how it was meant to be, everything between them, and the ending. I wouldn't change a thing :)

Shannon Murphy

She's had a crush on John for ages, and now that he's in her house, things are finally picking up between them :)
She has this crazy stalker, but luckily the LNF men are there to protect her :)

I really liked her character, especially her conduct with John. She didn't see him as handicapped or disabled, but just like any other man. She didn't let him feel sorry for himself, or inadequate, and basically, she's just the right person for him. They complement each other perfectly :)

John Palmer

I can't say how much I love this guy <3 He's a great character, surly and grumpy all the time, except when he's with Shannon :D
From the first time he saw her, he felt the attraction, and to his pretty much dead libido it was a shock :D
I just loved it each time he was jealous, or sweet to her, all awkward and everything <3
He's still a total alpha, and that was great too :D working the case and protecting her <3
Anyway, the most difficult part of this book was Palmer feeling he's not good enough for Shannon. He knows he comes with baggage and he doesn't want that for her, even though he wants to be with her.
He often feels frustrated because he can't do something simple and ordinary for her, but Shannon is always there to make him see it isn't important :)
Like I said, they're perfect for each other :)

I really, really loved this book, and I'm so glad I decided to read this series. Amazing and different, and with a beautiful message.

If you have not read The Embattled Road the prequel to this book, you should check it out. It will help you get to know the men in this series better and give you a look into their past. Embattled Hearts is the first book in the Lost and Found series.

John Palmer is a former Gunnery Sergeant . He was badly injured in Iraq ending his Military career and leaving him in a wheelchair. John has no family and the only friends he has is the two Military brothers that he went into business with Chad and Duncan. For the last few years John has been picking up the pieces of his life and doing the best he can. Working for Lost and Found helps, but he is still grumpy and bitter over his disability. Six months ago they hired a new office manager Shannon Murphy, and he wants her bad. Feeling insecure and like less of a man, John doesn't feel like he has anything to offer her. Shannon has been crushin on her boss John since she met him six months ago. She has never wanted anyone as much as his grumpy, sexy ass. When her troubled past catches up with her, John becomes her protector.

 photo Johnandshannon.jpg_zps3impdtbc.jpg

John: Was very real for me. He was angry, vulnerable, bitter, but trying to deal with what life has tossed at him. I love that he doesn't get out of his chair. In some books they all get the miracle cure, everything is fixed and they all live HEA, but not in this book. John has to overcome his insecurities and embarrassment of his disability. It makes him a real and wonderful character, with human flaws that are endearing. I fell hard for John!

"Shannon, I don’t want you to be…disappointed." He could feel his face burn with humiliation, and was thankful it was fairly dark in the bedroom. "Things don’t always happen the way I expect them to, if they happen at all."

“I can’t promise you anything beyond this, Shannon. Hell, maybe nothing will happen. My body isn't like it used to be. But I can make sure you’re taken care of.”

“I feel like I let you down, with everything. I guess I’m feeling defensive. Useless, to be blunt.”

Shannon: I loved Shannon as well. She was loving, and understanding. She gave him dignity and respect. She didn't look down on him and most of all she made him feel like a Man!

“I like you. A lot. I wasn't flirting with that cop because he didn't do anything for me. You’re the one that makes my heart race.”

"John, like I told you before, we can do as much or as little as you want. There’s no pressure, other than what you’re putting on yourself. I love being with you. If lying beside me is what you’re comfortable with, that’s what we’ll do."

 photo john and shannon 2_zpsrqumpvln.jpg

This book was touching and sweet. Their relationship felt real, gritty and raw! These two characters complemented each other beautifully. I rooted for them, felt their pain and their struggles.

“But I didn't want any of the other guys here. I only wanted you.” He frowned at her and shook his head, as if that wasn't what he wanted to hear. “I don’t know why. I’m a crippled, bitter, grumpy ass who swears too much.” “I know, but I've been half in love with you for months.” His eyes flared with heat before he looked down at his lap. “No, you’re not.”Shannon smacked him on the knee. “Don’t tell me I’m not in love with you.”

“And it doesn't apply to you. You’re the first person I've ever been with who doesn't make me want to shoot somebody out of boredom. You have spunk and heart and you’re sexy as hell, and you don’t mind my shit. And lady,” he said with a sigh, “I come with a lot of shit. I have a lot of baggage, and though I don’t mean to spew it on you, I know I will. I’ll tell you I’m sorry now and every day for the rest of my life.” He reached out and tugged her to lie across his lap. “But I'll also tell you I love you every day, which I do. I do not fucking deserve you. I know that. I've not done anything in this life to be given a gift like you. But I will cherish you, and honor you, as much as I possibly can. You make me feel like a man, and I cannot tell you how much I need that.”

This book is beautifully written, has tons of action, romance, and hot sex, but it didn't have a ton of silly drama which was nice. I loved this book and would totally recommend it to anyone who loves Military romances and broken heroes finding the love of a good woman!

4 1/2 Heartfelt Stars!! J.M. Madden has hit on something good. I love this series!

The author kept the story REAL!! She didn’t depict our wounded warriors to suddenly have abilities outside the bounds of what they would be truly capable of. She did not make a mockery of their injuries. I respect and appreciate the hell out of her for doing that. BRAVO J.M. Madden!!

After 6 years the men we met in The Embattled Road, Duncan, Chad and John, still struggle each and every day, but their determination to leave a mark on the world, and live as normal as possible is awe-inspiring.

John Palmer is a bitter, angry man, but a little sprite of a woman has come into his life, and for the first time in years, he is stirring back to life. I adored Shannon, what a charming, delightful character! She doesn’t allow John to rebuke or diminish what she feels for him; allow him to tell her what she can feel.

”He had every characteristic she had always wanted in a man. Humor, strength, level-headedness. The physical characteristics came in a distant second to his quiet personality and sardonic humor. They were what had drawn her most at the beginning. As well as his unrelenting loneliness.”

John’s embarrassment during their first intimate time together was written very well. It does not not happen the way he planned it in his mind, nor should it have. The man has not had sex in over 6 years, it’s not supposed to be perfect…again the author handled this quite well. John is humiliated, but Shannon won’t allow him to back off. It was really quite lovely how it all played out and one of the most beautiful moments in the book.

J.M. Madden did an amazing job illustrating the hardships of having a disability in life and in love! It was the perfect blend of sex, suspense and self-exploration! John was not a super-hero in this book, but he did what he could do and he did it well. At times he was frustrated, understandably so, but once he realizes that his amazing woman appreciates him for all he is, he cuts himself some slack and realizes in order for this relationship to work, there are times he going to need Shannon’s help. He will never fully accept it, but he’s willing to work around it. Let’s face it…Once a Marine, Always a Marine…and sometimes pride gets in the way.

 photo a32b24f5-1170-4a75-ab5c-50e845443b41_zps76a25859.jpg

We were also introduced to some other note-worthy characters, one adorable guy by the name of Zeke and I have it on good word that we are going to be seeing more of him. Woohoo!! We get the set-up for some storylines going forward, especially a mysterious homeless man that has Duncan on the case. I see so many men who deserve to have their stories told, and to find love! I will wait anxiously for each and every book! My only disappointment was the ending. I understand that John and Shannon will be a part of the upcoming books, but this ended rather abruptly and after investing my heart in this couple, I felt they deserved a better ending. Please J.M., give us more in the end!

This author is not getting the notability that she warrants, so I’ve made it my mission to spread the word about J.M. Madden and the Lost and Found series. Watch out readers, I’ll be plugging these books every chance I get!

The chair does not define the man and John Palmer is ALL MAN!!

So before I say anything...

description

I want to include an excerpt from the "NOTE FROM JM" tidbit that precedes this book:

"As we go about our daily grind, it's easy to forget that there are men and women dying every day as they fight to ensure our freedom. When they come home, no matter what shape they are in, they deserve our utmost respect and appreciation for doing the job they volunteered for.

Every solider that has served overseas will carry some type of scar, either internally or externally. It's our responsibility, as their support, to make sure that those scars are seen as marks of courage, not something to turn away from from when you pass them on the street."

I am a proud American and, regardless of your political views or wherever in the world you are from, the support of troops from ALL nations - those from ALL OVER THE WORLD who fight or have fought in any capacity to free others from persecution - is a cause I feel very passionately about.

All the men and women out there in the world fighting for people's rights - and their families members fighting and supporting them from home - you are all heroes in my book.

So kudos to an author for shouting this out and donating proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Foundation.

I tip my hat to you.

description

As far as the book goes...

description

I liked it...but not as much as I thought I would.

I enjoyed John a LOT.

He was a great mix and sweet and gruff and he was working to overcome something I couldn't even imagine dealing with.

Shannon was okay - if a little...staid.

There wasn't really anything about her that I found all that interesting, so don't ask me why anyone would go out of their way to stalk her.

description

And don't get me started on all the food preparation details.

Home girl must be quite the domestic goddess because she always seemed to have quite the little meal put together for everyone...

..."within minutes," of course.

description

But perhaps that's just that little green whore I call Jealousy rearing her ugly head.

Because I can't even be bothered to do much more than boil water and nuke oatmeal in the microwave.

But don't feel bad for my husband.

I have... "other talents."

description

Another thing that felt superfluous about this story was Pickle and her kittens.

I just didn't see the need for them to be mentioned so much I guess?

description

However, I think the major thing that...irked me a bit about this story was the main "climax" of the story.

***Spoiler Alert***

I'm sorry, but I just don't see how a psycho Registered Nurse and what basically amounts to a wet-behind-the-ears Police Trainee managed to outsmart and thwart a group of supposed military badasses.

description

It just doesn't seem plausible to me.

But whatevs!

So just to review, aside from that plot ass-hattery, and the constant mention of cats and needless cooking and food preparation...

description

...I enjoyed this story well enough and - based on the reviews and comments of several trusted GR buddies - I am really looking forward to the next one in the series.

I've read and reread almost all the books in the Lost & Found series, but this one still remains my favorite!
John was such a grouch, not that he didn't have reasons to be, but when it came to Shannon, he was a total sweetheart. Shannon was a little bit boring but I adored her kittens (and boyfriend :p).
The stalker turned villain story could have gone better. Felt more like a plot device to bring these two together than anything. But everything about their relationship was so beautiful that I've decided to overlook all the obvious plotholes. Their off the chart chemistry also helped. 4.5 stars.

This awesome book is part of an amazing series, and it's on sale for just $0.99 -

Embattled Hearts is the first full length story in J.M. Madden's Lost and Found series, and just as the prequel was, a truly wonderful book! This is John's story and I'm glad to have gotten it first because out of the three men - he, Chad, and Duncan - John was the one I was most worried about. So bitter, so uncertain... he'd lost so much of himself to his injuries and I desperately wanted to see him pull himself together and become the man he'd never stopped being.
From the cover:

John Palmer hasn’t felt like a real man since he was injured during combat in Iraq. Though not content with his new life, he is mostly adapting, just like the other vets at the Lost ‘N’ Found Investigative Service. When Shannon Murphy is hired on as the new office manager, life suddenly gets a lot more interesting. Before long, John finds himself wondering if he could ever be the kind of man Shannon needs.

Shannon Murphy wasn’t really looking for love when she hired on at LNF, but finds herself hopelessly attracted to the sex-on-wheels former Marine, John Palmer.

Even with all the resources at their disposal, they’re thrust into a fight for their lives.
There are already several amazing reviews of this book, so I'm not going to say much more except that if you want stories about our heroic men and women in the military, and would enjoy seeing the real lives that so many come home to, then I truly do believe you'll love this series.

Embattled Hearts is moving, romantic, exciting, and definitely sexy, and a story not to be missed!

I do believe you can read Embattled Hearts without having read the prequel, The Embattled Road but I would suggest you not skip it. It's a big part of John's journey from the man he was to the man he became, and I'm glad I read it.

Note: A portion of the proceeds from this book go to help fund The Wounded Warrior Project.

Have you ever began reading a book, and you just knew right away that this is going to be one of those books. That book that you'll compare all the others in a similar genre too, but they will still never hold a candle to them? Well this was that book for me. I loved it!!!

This was a hidden little gem. I have been drowning recently in an overload of possessive billionaires and TSTL heroines, angst-filled and over-dramatic plot lines, and completely unrealistic stories. I needed a break! Thankfully this book came along like a breath of fresh air.

First, if you have not read The Embattled Road I would not recommend reading this one. The Embattled Road is the prequel to this book and introduces the three main characters, Duncan, John, and Chad. The book was heart-breaking and emotional, and utterly necessary to build the background that helps put everything in this book into perspective. It takes place six years before the Embattled Heart.

John Palmer suffered a devastating injury while in Irag six years ago that leaves him in a wheelchair. He hasn't felt like a whole man since then. He's grumpy, and anti-social, and at times just plain rude.

Shannon works as the office manager at Lost 'N' Found Investigation. She is spunky, friendly, and the complete opposite of John, yet she draws him like a moth to a flame. John doesn't feel like he has anything to give to a woman, but he cannot help but desire the beautiful Shannon.

Now let me take a moment here to just say how much I absolutely adored both of these characters. John was surly, but the author does such an incredibly job with characterization in this book, that you simply cannot help but fall absolutely in love with him. You feel his pain, you understand each and every single one of his actions.

Shannon was such an endearing heroine as well. I loved how realistic the characters and their relationship was. There was no unnecessary drama. There were no moments of ridiculous or over the top jealousy or possessiveness.

When a stalker threatens Shannon's safety, John cannot help but want to protect her. He moves in with her, and their relationship begins to change. Forced in such close proximity to each other, they begin to give into the attraction between them.

John doesn't feel worthy of a woman like her, he feels broken and doesn't know what he possibly have to offer in his condition. But Shannon is patient and isn't shy about telling John that she wants him. I really enjoyed the way that Shannon was straightforward, she didn't play games or have silly flirting or try making him jealous. She was a woman that knew what she wanted, and she went after it but in a very non-pushy way. (If that even makes sense)

When Shannon and John finally get together...well let's just say it was everything it was building up to be. Wow!

This book was emotional, and realistic, and just utterly beautiful. I cannot recommend it enough. I really loved that the author had John stay in the wheelchair, there were no unrealistic miracle recoveries. It was real, it was heart-breaking, but I loved every single minute of it.

The only reason I took off half a star was because for some reason, I wasn't too enthralled with the suspense. It was very well done, don't get me wrong. But for one reason or another, something was just off for me.

I loved everything else about it, though; the writing, the characters, the love story, the characterization. J.M. Madden has now made it to my auto-buy list.

I'm really looking forward to the next books in this series, and cannot wait for Chad and Duncan's book.

4.5 Emotionally Beautiful stars

Loved this one. 4.5 stars. Got the prequel The Embattled Road and it really drew me to the characters and the storyline. No sugar coating here. John Palmer was injured in Iraq and is now in a wheelchair - many other authors might have "rectified" this and had him standing upright to meet the love of his life. Not this author - Reality sucks and John is, of course, bitter and angry. Shannon, who works in the same office as him is great. Stands up to him, doesn't feel sorry for him and falls for him. Good suspense going too with a stalker, ex-stalker. Loved the other characters in the book. Hoping for Duncan's story soon> I really cannot wait for the next in the series. No idea when it will be released but delighted to have discovered a new author. I originally got The Embattled Road free on Amazon but the story was so good and realistic that I would gladly have paid money for it. When you finish a good book, it is hard to find another one that will live up to my expectations.

4.5 stars!

After suffering horrific injuries during combat in Iraq and losing the use of his legs John Palmer wonders if he will ever be able to find normality in life. Setting up LNF Investigative Services with his two best friends Duncan and Chad he is just going through the motions of day to day, until the sweet Shannon Murphy rattles his cage and makes him take notice.

Shannon Murphy has her eyes set on the broody and quiet warrior. And when she finds herself in a dangerous situation, John is there for her every step of the way. The sexual attraction they feel for one another is there, but will it be enough to get John realising that he has more to offer this sweet woman than what he is willing to believe?

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, it is heart warming, suspenseful and just downright good! Enjoy!

I am so disappointed. I really thought this book would be a win for me, I really liked the prequel novella but Embattled Hearts was a surprise, and not a very good one.

It started out pretty well, I was really enjoying it, happy to see more of John, Chad and Duncan from The Embattled Road but then, it went to shit.

This is John's story, John used to be a Marine and a good one. But, long story short, he got crushed by a door in Iraq and it left him paralyzed from the waist down. Now he runs the Lost ‘N’ Found Investigative Service with his buddies, Chad and Duncan.

Shannon is the office manager at the agency and she's very attracted to John/Grumpy. But she thinks he only sees her as a friend and vice versa. But when a bad situation presents itself, Shannon has no other choice than asking John for his help and when John says yes, he does not do it halfway.

I liked John, for the most part. At the beginning, I could totally understand his personality, why he was so anti-social and why he felt like less than a man. Useless. And I did, I understood that but it got old pretty fast. The man was always trying to convince himself that Shannon didn't like him, that she thought she did because she was in danger, blah blah blah. Yes, you're paralyzed, yes, it's a terrible thing and it's unfair, but a beautiful and sweet woman wants you, cares for you, LET HER, DUMBASS!
Shannon was a good heroine as well...until she got on my nerves. Like I said, she was sweet and caring and I loved that she didn't care that John was paralyzed but, ugh, could she be annoying! She cried or teared up all the fucking time.
I did not feel their connection, I found their relationship not developed enough and I just felt nothing for them. Sure, they could be cute and all but nothing special. I do like when the main characters are not rushed together but I don't like when it takes more than half the book for them to do something about it. I was bored at times, lucky me, it wasn't a long read.

The suspense part was the worst, to be honest. It was not interesting, it didn't grab me and when everything went to shit towards the end, it was just not good for me. It was over before it had even started and the Jennings thingy was just ridiculous.

The secondary characters were good but, I did not really connect with them except maybe Zeke, and Chad and Duncan but because they already were in the prequel.

I'm pretty frustrated with this book because I loved the prequel and I find the idea of the series awesome, I just hope the next books are better. I will definitely read the next one, I think it's Zeke's story and I really liked him in this one, I already wanted to protect and hug him, so, let's do it!

This book is definitely in the running to be my favorite book of 2014...just saying...

description

description

It's safe to say that I am absolutely OBSESSED with this book. It literally has EVERYTHING I love about military romance novels AND MORE.
It has:
-a wounded war veteran who doesn't feel that he deserves the love of a woman.
-a heroine who looks past the veterans disability and see's the amazing man that he is.
-ACTION
-a stalker
-AND A GREAT SEX SCENE.

description

But this book is so much more than that. The character that made this book SO amazing was my new book-boyfriend John. He is such a complex character and you literally feel for him. He truly felt as though he doesn't deserve happiness. It was a very realistic portrayal of a wounded war veteran who was both physically and mentally affected by his time spent overseas.

In a lot of military romance novels, the wounded veteran performs like a man with no physical impairments in bed; as if he isn't wounded at all. The first time John and Shannon have sex, he struggled. It lead to one of the most emotional sex scenes I have ever read. The embarrassment John felt after thier first time is completely overshadowed by Shannon's love and desire for him and it made for SUCH an amazing scene.

If you enjoy military romance novels , you will LOVE this book! Up Next: Embattled Minds !

Content: Two erotic sex scenes, violence, F-bombs, some typos

I really enjoyed Madden's prequel novella, The Embattled Road, and eagerly awaited this book, Embattled Hearts, so I'm delighted to report that it did not disappoint! Except for one gripe, I enjoyed this suspenseful and heartwarming romance, set around Denver, Colorado one snowy November, about 5 years after the prequel.

Shannon, you sweetheart, what's cookin' in the crockpot today -- besides a simmering suspense, and John's sexual tension?

No spoilers regarding the mystery-suspense.

Kudos for consistency. Madden's three main characters align with her portrayal of them in book one, as outlined in my review. For example, John still drops F-bombs every other sentence and keeps to himself, Chad still charms everyone and watches over his wounded brothers (Zeke, in this book), and Duncan still runs the show with confidence, competence, and quiet compassion. Of course, some things change. It's been five years since last we met these "wounded warriors."

In this book, Madden's wonderful hunk of a hero is John Palmer, a former Marine gunnery sergeant whose honorable discharge includes a box full of medals -- and this guy does NOT need the chest to pin them on. He's hard, he's hot, and he smells sooo good. John survived an explosion in Iraq only to return home as a paraplegic. Nonetheless, this fiercely independent private investigator is as mobile as one could possibly be in a sport chair (a wheelchair, I presume). I loved John. I loved his sweetheart, too. Shannon Murphy joined John's detective firm six months ago, working as the office manager and receptionist, befriending the 20 lonely detectives, serving them a home-cooked meal every Friday, and tending her four newborn kittens (loved the scenes with John and the kitten). From day one at the office, Shannon secretly swooned for John, and the feeling was silently reciprocated, but the relationship does not take off until this book begins, when Shannon's life is threatened. The point of view shifts from Shannon to John, primarily.  The romantic relationship is credible because the issues are on the table with Shannon's sensitive but no-nonsense approach to John's moods and insecurities (this felt authentic). Shannon and John's encounters are very heartwarming -- and eventually very erotic.

John's POV, in front of fire with Shannon:
"That one small arch of her spine made him feel ten feet tall. Kind of. It made him forget, for one infinitesimal moment, that he wasn't even six feet tall anymore."

The pace moves along nicely with virtually no yawns and the killer plot is pretty solid, too.The unfolding of this suspense worked for me (except that the psycho would probably have simply killed Shannon and been done with it, without all the mind games, and I also had trouble with the psycho's characterization). However, Madden kept me guessing (which I like) and did not drown me in maudlin self-dialogue (which I hate). One plot twist really took me by surprise, even though there were minor clues I might have caught. At the end, this former deputy sheriff tidily wrapped up her mystery and tied it with a bow, also putting the finishing touches on John and Shannon's relationship. Their HEA is only just beginning, with best wishes for a really likeable couple! ツ

I liked the scenes with Zeke and Ember, too, and would like more time with Preston Harper. He needs his own sequel. So does Zeke. Of course, I'm assuming Chad and Duncan will get one.

This book's GREATEST strength lies in Madden's characterization of "wounded warrior" veterans -- their perspective, and their unique adaptive equipment (John's cool truck, Roger's prosthetic arm). Madden is not a vet herself, but she certainly writes with a keen awareness of how veterans feel, especially if they've lost a limb or been impaired or disfigured, and are thus treated "differently" in any way. Madden uses “show, not tell” methods to portray what John cannot do (run, shovel snow, climb a ladder) as well as how much he CAN do. For just one example, he's first to spot various clues and notice when things don't look right. But he's soooo frustrated that she's in danger, and he's not the man he was just six years ago. He doesn’t want her to “settle” for him, fears that he won't be able to get or keep an erection, and frankly cannot understand why she loves him – his own mother dumped him at age five! (sob).

Lost N Found investigators in this book:
Duncan Wilde is the owner, along with John and Chad. He uses a cane, but can move fast if needed.
John Palmer has a crushed spine and is wheelchair bound, with superior upper body strength.
Chad Lowell has a weak arm and a prosthetic lower leg. Can he run?
Roger Stottsberry has a prosthetic arm wired into his nerves.
Preston Harper is a former SEAL. Anything physically wrong?
Zeke (no last name) is a giant with a scarred face and a speech impairment caused by head trauma.

This and that: The parts with the homeless man in a hoodie provide a much sadder and perhaps more realistic perspective of life after Iraq. Also, John may have a long lost brother out there? Intriguing! And...will we see more of Shannon's unexpected hero?

A turn off for me: Shannon, otherwise cast as a nice girl who loves kittens and horses, makes Friday Specials for the entire crew at LNF, is good friends with a nurse and beloved of her family, refers to her own “puss” and “pussy” in three instances. Who the heck does that? It's demeaning, and out of character.

Note: If you like this book, try Skin Deep, Pamela Clare's novella about Nate West, a Marine who survived an explosion but lost half his face, leaving him badly scarred. It's a sweet and sexy romantic suspense. Also, the paralysis trope reminded me of an erotic Regency romance, The Model Master.

3.5 - The man was sex on wheels... Literally. Stars.

After devouring The Embattled Road, I dove right into Embattled Hearts. This is John Palmer’s story, so it was a no-brainer decision to be honest, as I fell for this broken man 100% in the prequel novella.

We join the guys from Lost N Found Investigative Services, five years on from their time spent together recovering in hospital at the end of their military careers, and it was great too catch up with those characters as well as be introduced to a whole raft of new ones that have joined the company in those years.

"Remind me never to piss you off."

I really enjoyed the story between John and Shannon, the first 70% kept me well entertained, this is the first book I have read where one of the main characters if wheel-chair bound, and I think the author handled the complexities of that situation really well, without making them out to be something out of the ordinary. John although now adjusted to life in a chair, is still bitter when it comes to not being able to be the strong protector that he thinks Shannon needs, especially when the suspense aspect of the story ramps up.

"I never thought I’d feel this way again."

I found his protectiveness sweet and extremely endearing, especially when he struggled to put into words exactly what he was thinking and feeling towards Shannon. They have been circling each other and their attraction for quite some time, and just with them finally admitting their feelings, a dark aspect of Shannon’s past comes back into the fore, which essentially pushes them together even more.

This is the bit of the book I rolled my eyes at to be honest, and more than once, it is also reason why this dropped from a 4.5-5 star read down to my final rating. The suspense sort of took a step into the ridiculous, for me and went one twist to far. It came out of left field completely though so the element of surprise was there, which I applaud the author for.

We are also introduced to Zeke Foster in this one, and I have to admit what we see of him, hit all of my soft spots too, so I will definitely be looking to read the next book in the series Embattled Minds at some point in the future. As I am interested to see what kind of story the author gives him.

I grabbed this book and the prequel novella free off amazon, if they are still on offer I would wholeheartedly recommend you grab them.

Like the novella, it’s not bad writing per se, just boring. The descriptions are very straightforward. There’s maturity but there’s very little “storytelling.” It’s like reading an instruction manual. It makes me feel nothing. DNF 64%.

Re read because I just read a crappy book and needed a pick me up.

Absolutely LOVE this book!!!! I also love this author and this series.

I love military Heros, but service disabled vets are even more awesome!

John had issues. Baggage. But he was all in to help Shannon and he did not deviate. Even when he told her she should find someone better you could tell he did not mean it. I never worried and more importantly, neither did Shannon. The dual POV really helped! I really liked that the author made him a stud but did not ignore his disabilities. She showed a lot of his weaknesses, struggles and frustrations. She did not sugar coat it.

Shannon totally rocked. She saw the man, not the disability. They had great chemistry. I rarely LOVE a heroine, but I really loved her. She was sweet, caring, brave and NOT a damsel in distress. She was also realistic about what John could do, did not baby him, but also understood his frustration over not being able to do some things.

Safety gang safe.

I think this is a special story (and series) and I hope readers take the time to read it!

10/23/2016 -- Read Again -- 4.5 Stars .. I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time I read this one.
=============
02/24/2013 --

Overall Rating = 4.5 Stars
Book Cover / Book Blurb = 5 / 5 = 5 Stars
Writer’s Voice = 4 Stars
Character Development = 5 Stars
Story Appreciation = 5 Stars
Worth the Chili = 5 Stars [$3.99 Amazon and B&N]

I can't say strongly enough how heartwarming this story was for me. It was good from the first page to the last. I absolutely loved that the Hero in this book was a real hero. He came back from the war in Iraq wheelchair bound but didn't let this him stop him.

So many things worked for me in this book:
1 -- Loved the characters. They were real for me. John was one of many war veterans mentioned in this book who came back with challenges; physical and non-physical. The writer painted this character and all the others mentioned realistically. She helps us see how our returning veterans are living daily with issues thrust on them as the result of service. It is eye opening and warms the heart.

2 -- The bit of suspense woven into the story was well done. It could have had some additional depth, but it was well done. It kept me interested without having the "cheese factor" trap so many, new to suspense fall into.

3 -- The cover and the blurb for this book were enough to sell me, even if I didn't already know and like this author. The simple fact the Hero in this book is wheelchair bound was intriguing to me. How would she pull this off. In the book they mention all the research being done with stem cells on incomplete spinal damage. I appreciate the realism we were left with.

The only thing I really didn't like was:
1 -- I chalk it up to the author's voice. The story could have had more depth. She gave us these wonderful rich characters. We know she is creating a series, but, I could have had a bit more of John to like and know. Give me more of Shannon. They were both just wonderful. She just barely introduced them to me and then the book was over. Anytime you introduce suspense in a story, much of the story is taken with the setup for the ending. In this case, it moved too quickly. I think a bit more depth, a few more pages would have make the book that much better. The ground work had been laid, but just a small lack in execution -- hurrying to figure out what to move to the next book in this series and paving the way for the suspense to play out.

I really liked everything else about this book. If you like your romances with a richly painted war vet in a more realistic life circumstance this would be a great book to try. I'm bettin' you won't be sorry you did.

Happy Reading!

What a fantastic series I've come upon! And man am I kicking myself in the ass for not having found it sooner!

The prequel blew me away and I couldn't wait to dive in and go on the emotional journey of the imperfect men of Lost and Found Investigations.

I'm so glad that surly John Palmer came first. I was most intrigued by him...and he certainly didn't disappoint. Watching him evolve and embrace the easy affection Shannon showed was fantastic.

There was a sensitive emotional balance constantly present that the author managed to handle perfectly. How do you show love to someone whose never felt it? How do you make a man feel whole, when he feels less than?

Shannon's personality was a great counterbalance to John's insecurities and vulnerability. She showed John that she saw the whole package and not just the working parts. She never looked at him with pity or doubted what he was fully capable of.

He was always waiting for it...waiting for her to "help" him, waiting for her to say something or show that she thought of him as less than a man.

But it never came. Nor would it ever.

So all this gushing and why not 5 stars? Two reasons:

1. For me, the start of the book felt like walking into the middle of a conversation. John and Shannon already had feelings for each other and had already developed a friendship that was told instead of felt. I just wish as a reader I would have been a part of their introduction or the building of that friendship.

2. The suspense/mystery part of the story was a tad on the ridiculous side. Especially the big reveal and unraveling of the grand plan. A little too far fetched for my taste.

Other than these two factors, the book was exactly what I didn't know I was looking for. It felt REAL for lack of a better word. Every emotion, every action, every conversation felt true to the characters and true to the journey. I'm looking forward to devouring everything that has to come in this series!

Someone is stalking Shannon. When her boss, former Marine and now a partner in a security firm finds out, he moves in, determined to protect her. But with the prime suspect locked away in a maximum security prison, they can't figure out how he is getting to her.

description

Embattled Hearts is completely out of proportion. It's romantic suspense but for the first 60% or so, there isn't all that much romance or suspense. Then without all that much build up, everything hits you at once and just as quickly it's over. Then the last 15% is spent tying up loose ends and messing up the sheets.

So, why 3 Stars? Because despite those problems I liked all the characters and the book still managed to entertain.

3.5 stars

I've read the prequel novella Embattled Road and love the premise of this series that center around the Lost 'N' Found Investigation Service set up by Duncan, whom was discharged from the Marine after his injury in Iraq. His partners, Chad and John, along with the employees they recruited were mostly discharged who had suffered certain injury rendered them unable to service in the military any longer.

In this Book 1, we have John Palmer, a paraplegic who is one of Duncan's business partner. He appeared to be a grumpy guy in general and hating everyone who look at him the wrong way. He had too much pride in himself and constantly feeling bitter about his condition.

Shannon Murphy had been working at the company for six months and she was having a big crush on the sex-on-wheelchair, John. Their relationship seems to be heading nowhere, until she started to get harassed by a stalker, whom she believed might or might not be her ex-psychotic stalker.

When Shannon safety was being threaten, John offered to protect and watch out for her, which include camping in her house, much to her pleasure. One thing that bug me about Shannon was her constant 'tears'. She didn't downright sob or wail, but she often had short moments of 'tears in her eyes'. Besides that minor annoyance, she was generally a likable character, who doesn't perform any dumb move or create unnecessary drama.

I started this series believing it to be a romantic suspense. But I need to point out that the suspense plot on the stalker issue was not a strong one and it rather serve as a subplot to get the story going. During the climatic ending and revelation, I find the reason to be kinda far-fetched. If you are looking for a good suspense, this is not the book.

What I like in this book was the way the author tackled the handicap issue within the relationship. I know I will sound totally shallow because the only reason I kept reading this book was to see how they work out the sex scene. And I gotta tell you it was GOOD. The author tried to make it realistic for us. John had been a paraplegic and celibate for 6 years and of course he won't miraculously had great sex during his first attempt post-injury. Well, Shannon was very accepting when it comes to John, she help him whenever he allowed her. On a side not, I keep racking my head wondering

In the end, John is learning how to accept help from others and tried not to be an ass most of the time. Shannon will make sure of that. I find that their relationship towards the end got a little too rush in order to wrap up with a HEA. Is a pretty good read for those who like to read about handicap heroes, like me. I will definitely follow this series through and can't wait to read Duncan's story.

3 1/2 stars (rounded down to 3 stars, because the bad guys were easy to figure out and the narrative was too detailed at times - I mean, I don't need to know every single thing the characters did every single time, do I?)

Embattled Hearts

J. M. Madden

EMBATTLED HEARTS is the second book in the Lost and Found series. This is the story of a Iraq war veteran John, and the company he runs with his two Marine brothers called LNF Investigative Services. They are all struggling and try to help each other as best they can. I loved the story about these three Marines and I am totally going to continue with this series. You will find yourself cheering for these three brave heroes, praying they can move forward.

John finds himself smitten with Shannon who works in his office. A few years back, Shannon was stalked by a man named Michael. He is in now in jail, but weird things start happening to Shannon. John calls the jail to make sure Michael is still there and he is. So how does he explain why Michael's fingers prints are on a can of Pepsi that Shannon found in her kitchen garbage can? Shannon doesn't drink Pepsi. John makes himself Shannon's protector and moves in to her home. Yeah buddy, now things get very very interesting! EMBATTLED HEARTS is filled with twists and turns and at times, I was sitting there with my mouth wide open thinking what the heck just happened!!

At first, I didn't like John. He was nothing but abrasive and grumpy. Shannon was his polar opposite. Always happy and smiling. How were these two going to survive being in the same room together? John is in a wheel chair with a spinal injury and has a problem dealing with that. It makes him feel less than a man and Shannon tries to let him know that it doesn't matter to her. Her brother is also in a wheel chair so she has first hand knowledge with what he is dealing with. J.M. Madden really shows the struggles that our soldiers go through when they return home weather they are injured or not. PTSD is a very real thing and so many soldiers suffer from it. EMBATTLED HEARTS is a heart tugging story that will pull at your heart and have you wiping tears away more than once. I'm so excited to continue this series!

4 I only wanted you stars!

I sincerely believe there is a soul mate for everybody. The external package doesn't matter when it comes to the heart.
- J.M. Madden

Black Dagger Brotherhood with war veterans instead of vampires! - That's how I'd describe this book in a sentence.

J.M. Madden gives us here stories of everyday heroes. Not ordinary men! Because any man that would go through what her heroes went, would cease to live an ordinary life! But real men with real stories. Not supernatural eye-rolling stuff that you just read because it's entertaining, but real and down-to-earth stories of people you could just as easily meet across the street.

John Palmer hasn't felt like a real man since he was injured during combat in Iraq. Though not content with his new life, he is mostly adapting, just like the other vets at the Lost ‘N’ Found Investigative Service. John is one of the bosses of LNF and his team of returned and disabled veterans is more a family and a home than a simple workplace.

And here is where the strength of this novel stands. The author did a fabulous job in describing the disabilities of all those men. She didn't gloss anything over. Neither the anxiety and panic attacks, nor the frustration or anger that comes when a former healthy man is chained by a disability he has no control over.

John is gruff and grumpy and sexy as hell, despite the wheelchair that confines him. He has resigned himself to an existence where he can simply get by and just like any other man in the LNF, he has already discarded all hope of love, family or home. He is broken and so much less than a man! And what woman would ever want to be shackled to someone like him?!

But despite giving up hope, he still feels desire. A desire and a longing that don't want to listen to his hardened heart and already set mind. And all of it because of Shannon Murphy. A newly hired petite employee that makes John wonder if he could ever be the kind of man she needs.

And soon enough she finds herself wondering just what it would take for John to want her the way she wants him

When an old enemy tries to settle a vendetta against Shannon, John insists on protecting her. He moves into her house, fanning the spark of attraction into a blaze.

To John, Shannon is different. She sees the man behind the wheelchair! To her, John is not less!!

So John falls, and he falls hard! But danger lurks around the corner and Shannon will need a real man by her side. Will a broken one like John be enough?

I loved the way John's relationship with Shannon was described. The embarrassment and humiliation of a man who feels he isn't man enough was heartbreaking!
"Shannon, I don’t want you to be…disappointed." He could feel his face burn with humiliation, and was thankful it was fairly dark in the bedroom. "Things don’t always happen the way I expect them to, if they happen at all."
“I feel like I let you down, with everything. I guess I’m feeling defensive. Useless, to be blunt.”

And Shannon's gentleness, love and understanding, that managed to convey both admiration and respect went straight to the heart.
“I like you. A lot. ... You’re the one that makes my heart race.”
"John, like I told you before, we can do as much or as little as you want. There’s no pressure, other than what you’re putting on yourself. I love being with you. If lying beside me is what you’re comfortable with, that’s what we’ll do."

The suspense was not so intense as the culprit was fairly easy to spot, but the development of plot and the action still managed to make this read a pretty wild ride. A wild and above all REAL ride! J.M. Madden kept it real all throughout!

A beautifully written book with great characters and a raw and gritty heartfelt relationship, topped with quite a lot of action and suspense, this is the perfect read for romantic suspense fans. Especially those who love the broken hero type. I highly recommend it!

photo Johnandshannon.jpg_zps3impdtbc.jpg

"You’re the first person I've ever been with who doesn't make me want to shoot somebody out of boredom.

What woman wouldn't fall for that?!

Loved the story so the beginning of this series is looking good. High five to the author for her ability to describe the feelings, emotions, insecurities, and other problems returning vets have adjusting to life back home after a life changing injury. Fascinating, interesting and sometimes sad but overall a feeling of understanding that I didn’t have before reading this series. The explanations the characters give of the do’s and don’ts of how they want to be treated by the general public was an eye opener. My heart goes out to all returning vets for the challenges they face and makes me even more appreciative of their overall service and commitment. This is an unusual series and not one I think I’ve ever read featuring handicapped characters, and I think it’s very well done. That a portion of the proceeds goes to the Wounded Warrior Project is another plus.

The main characters of this first bk from the LNF agency are John/Shannon. After reading the novella, The Embattled Road..which is a must, I think of John as the angry one. Shannon slowly draws John out of his moodiness, frustration and the insecurities he feels with his “maleness” while being restricted to a wheel chair. Not an easy job, especially when he finds it so difficult to reveal his true feelings for Shannon, and he still holds on to some anger and resentment about his limited capabilities, but Shannon gives him hope. There were a few times I wanted to punch John and say “no guts, no glory dude, go for it”, but John finally gets the message loud and clear after much internal wrangling. What a change that makes for him. I was so invested in their story that I was just as thrilled for John as he was when he finally consummated his and Shannon’s relationship. And it was hot! Was John a happy camper? You betcha, but his overall change after finding someone that cares for him and who he cares about in return is not an unreal 180 degree turn around. Both he and Shannon realize being in a relationship and being handicapped comes with its own set of issues so it slowly unfolds and has them looking forward to the future with hope and a smile on their faces.

There’s also a mystery “who done it” that surrounds Shannon that the LNF crew has to solve. Again more challenges to be faced but I like the overall team effort each characters contributes to their unique situation. If it were to be balanced on a scales, the mystery didn’t seem to carry the same weight as the overall feelings and dealings the characters faced which to me felt more front and center here. This story didn’t make the 5 star rating from me since it loses ½ a star for the abrupt ending. I wanted to wallow in John/Shannon’s HEA for a while longer. I needed more and hope we get to see a bit more to their story when bk 2 is released. Fingers crossed the wait isn’t too long.

What a sweet, sweet herione! I loved Shannon and her no-nonsense attitude!

The way she conquered John's insecurities was just brilliant! Finally a heroine who does what she's told to do without stupid questions. I appreciated this very much!

John is a truly troubled man. Not only physically, because of his being paraplegic, but also mentally, where his PTSD is mixed with guilt. I love reading how Shannon managed to make him a real man again and I rejoiced when finally they got together. It was at the same time hot and tender moment. Great job, Ms. Madden!

The villain part was so and so for me, I had it almost from the start who was it. But I didn't mind it at all.

The beauty here is John's recapturing his life as a fully functional man. It was wonderful!

The emotional charge in this book is really great and it was what made all the other things pale!

Oooofff.....

Not good.

Frankly, there are too many problems to list and I'm not invested enough to dissect. I will say that I feel fairly confident that the author did little to no research on the military, including but not limited to: combat injuries, PTSD or veteran outreach. Also, she paints individuals with combat injuries in extremely cringey ways and I'm not sure how much of that was the author making the fictional character have those thoughts for plot sake or because she, the author, thinks in those terms.

A great story

I really enjoyed this book about a returned serviceman who was injured in the war and a very understanding woman who loves him for himself.

There was suspense that was interesting, sizzling attraction between the H/h and an introduction to the crew in the Lost N Found offices.

I'm interested to read more from this author and this series.

First let me say that the Note from J.M. at the beginning of this book was really touching. My favorite lines from it are: "I sincerely believe there is a soulmate for everybody. The external package doesn't matter when it comes to the heart." Truer words have never been spoken.

Now on to the story.
I don't usually read military romances, but after I received encouragement to read this from Jill I jumped right into it. This book contained the perfect blend of romance with some action, and a crazy stalker mystery.

John
"For the first time in longer than he could remember, he had met a person that not by word or deed made him feel less than a man."
description

Shannon
"She had already decided that she would take whatever John was willing to give."
description

Shannon and John have now become one of my favorite couples. I think I especially enjoyed this because John and Shannon were two mature adults with growing, deepening feelings for each other, and they acted as such. There were no crazy fights, long separations or any needless, silly drama. These two were always interested in each other, but neither had the courage to pursue a relationship until Shannon begins receiving creepy hints that someone is watching her. John has a hard time letting Shannon in, and believing that someone like her could love someone like him."What did she see in him that nobody else ever had?" I also enjoyed the fact that John never threw himself a pity party, or sulked because of his situation. In fact he hated when others tried to help him, and was afraid of not being man enough for Shannon.

I liked Shannon right away, she wasn't a simpering Miss waiting to be rescued and loved. She was strong when she needed to be, and allowed John to be the man in charge in the relationship even though he is paraplegic. If I can use one word to describe their relationship, it would be "easy." Things between John and Shannon just felt so right and natural. This is not long read. This book was pretty short and sweet. We meet the couple for book two, Zeke and Ember, and I can already tell that theres will be an interesting story.

Overall this is a great start to a series that I will definitely continue to read.
"I know you have baggage, I know you're going to be a pain in my ass, but I love you more than I ever dreamed possible."

Oh...John...I loved his character so much and I loved Shannon equally as much. They were perfect for each other. Such a great couple and so much fun to read. This book starts out about 5 years after the end of Embattled Road and I was so glad that Duncan, Chad and John were making a go of their private detective agency and employing other wounded soldiers. Each of these 3 heroes quickly won me over in Embattled Road and I was so looking forward to reading more about them.

I loved that John found his soul mate in Shannon and that she didn't put up with his crap but called him on it. I especially loved that she didn't pity him and didn't really see him as being disabled. I absolutely loved when she would curl up in his lap while he was sitting in his wheel chair. They also had some pretty SMOKING HOT sex. ;)

Such a great story with lovable sigh inducing heroes that pulled me in from the start. Oh..I loved Zeke and Ember and hope to read more about them in the series. *crossesfingers* I was totally entertained watching John and Shannon struggle on their way to a HEA. Reading John fall in love with Shannon was so entertaining. Embattled Hearts definitely tugged on my heart. I loved getting to read a little more about Chad and Duncan and cannot wait for their books and hopefully read more about John and Shannon.

I loved the concept of this series and how their agency employed other wounded vets. So good!! I am definitely hooked on this series. I was absorbed in to the story and couldn't wait to see what happened next. It was full of love, laughter, tears, some nail~biting moments and of course sexy heroes~everything that I love in a book. I didn't want it to end.

I love how John protected Shannon~Oh...the scene where he gets glass in his hands and in the wheels of his chair while trying to save her and she takes care of him~just about does me in. Just loved these two characters together. Oh and the scene with the bracelet and her misunderstanding of what it meant. So good!! I loved how Shannon was able to handle him and see beyond his gruffness. He was so tough and hard on the outside but so tender on the inside with Shannon. I just wanted to crawl all over him!! lol ;) His childhood broke my heart. J.M. really got to me with John's story. He definitely didn't have an easy time of it. But I think that Shannon was definitely his reward. They were just what the other needed.

Just a great story and I can't wait for more. I would definitely recommend and this is a definite reread for me. Embattled Road and Embattled Hearts made me such a HUGE fan of J.M. 5 out of 5 rating.
