MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Jonathan has me Hook Line and Sinker with this Amazing story and has left me wanting more this is one series I will be keeping up with.

The story line is great it has a nice flow there are a lot of things going on but you don't get lost in them you know exactly what is happening.

The main characters are written beautifully you connect with them especially Conner's character he is just so easy to like.

Image if you will being a 18 year old boy who doesn't know who his father is, who works for his mum has not long been dumped by his girlfriend Katie, meets another girl (Laren) while out for a run and suddenly Conner’s world changes forever and that's not even half the story.

Conner is so lovely he doesn't lose who he is at any time in this book even though his world is turned upside down. His ex-girlfriend Katie dumped him but yet he is still there for her and when she calls upon him in her darkest hour he's there and Katie does play a big part in this book.

Then he meets Laren another great character who works for her father they own land and businesses and this is where the back story lies as others feel they own the right to that land.

There is a quick bond cemented between Laren and Conner and when Conner is caught up in trying to save her and her brother Lu she is the one who risks everything and goes against the council and their rules.

Morrigan is another great character I loved her she also plays a bit part in this story. She is not what she seems and has been watching Conner all his life and stands by his side when he faces the council.

Faust believes the land belongs to him and his family and believes he is better than the council and takes matters into his own hands and is involved with the dark power that is yet to come. Faust is the one who goes against the council and breaks their rules and he is the reason why Conner ends up facing the Council you think he is evil I don't think we have seen evil yet but it's coming.

The book doesn't end on a cliff-hanger it just leaves you wanting more and to follow Conner on his journey but I am left with few questions. One being Who is Conner going to choose Katie or Laren ? And yes I know who I want him to end up with.

This is a thrilling read and a great first book in what I can see to be an Awesome series well done Jonathan you certain have a new fan in me.

Connor Moore was just your normal average 18 year old. He had plans to go to college and help his mom out at her store. Within days of meeting a girl named Laren, he learns of a powerful race of people called the Elites and his perception of the world as he knew it is changed forever and so is he.

The Elites seem to be a cross between a werewolf and a vampire but more powerful. There are 5 ruling families spread throughout the world and they've mostly lived in peace with each other and humans, except when the laws to keep them safe and undiscovered have been broken. Then judges step in to protect everyone.

Can Connor become what they need him to be in order to survive against an evil force that could destroy them all?

The author created his own version of supernatural characters that differs slightly from the usual. It was very well told and the characters are thoroughly enjoyable to read and have depth to them. The ending seemed to be slightly rushed but it didn't really bother me knowing there is a second book to read.

The Beast Within took me by surprise in the BEST sort of way. Although it's tagged as YA Paranormal, I found it leaned more toward New Adult because of its mature characters, plot, and writing style.

Connor Moore is a refreshing swoon-worthy male protagonist—genuinely caring, level-headed, and made even sexier because of his attitude. He knows his priorities, handles them and any situation thrown at him with grace, while still being a man. A respectful man, at that. There was a certain realism and honesty in his narration and outlook—how I imagine a guy truly thinks—but he was also, to the core, thoughtful and courteous.

I really appreciated how his good looks were alluded to, as well. Too often, I find novels where the male physique is described to an aching, typical degree. Nope. No strong jaw, stunning blue or green eyes, six-pack, bicep-flexing, over-the-top descriptors here. It was his actions that told me he was more than a little toned and gorgeous (and not even close to the book cover, in my opinion. I pictured someone more along the lines of a dark-haired Channing Tatum).

The author's writing style did this well throughout, actually—gave enough description, but left room for reader imagination and interpretation. The characters' actions spoke louder than words. The dialog added to multiple aspects of the storyline, with nothing blatant or already apparent said or gone into, which made the story even more engaging. I only knew and guessed as much as Connor did. Nothing more; nothing less. I learned everything with him, and I loved that. Along with the good descriptions, it truly pulled me into the world Connor found himself and never dragged.

While I wouldn't have minded more on Laren, the love interest, throughout the book, I still loved her as much as Connor. She was alluring and classy, sassy yet tactful, and she could fight her own battles. I actually wanted her. Her and Connor's interaction was wonderful, too. Nothing cheesy or cliche. There isn't any explicit sex or heavy romance, either, but that didn't hinder my overall experience with the book. That's not to say, I wouldn't have enjoyed some, though. *hint hint, nudge nudge, Jonathan*

Action-packed and well-paced, the plot surprised me, as well. I was expecting vampires and werewolves or some other paranormal race, but that's not the case. It might not turn the Paranormal genre on its ear, but I enjoyed how the secret society of an ancient race played in historical events. Their own world interwove with ours, and I was totally engrossed in it. They have their own rules, traditions, and ceremonies. I found myself squealing in excitement with each new development and reveal.

I couldn't have been more pleased to have stumbled upon Jonathan Yanez's debut novel. I didn't want The Beast Within to end, and when it did, I couldn't believe it. I actually swiped my finger across my Kindle, frantic, the beast within me rearing its ugly head, snarling, Wait. What? 'The End?' '100%?' No. NO! I was that absorbed.

Paranormal lovers, I strongly encourage you give The Beast Within a try. With a distinctive, well-developed cast, great suspense, and an intriguing world, this book is going on my would-read-again shelf, and I have a feeling the next installment will be even better.

Favorite scenes (out of many, while trying hard to avoid spoilers):
"Spare yourself some heartache and leave her alone."
Connor thought this over for a few seconds before he responded. "No."
"What did you say?"
"I said no. Laren's old enough to make her own decisions, and if your family is going to dislike me, then I'll just have to win them over."
Lu held Connor's gaze, and for a moment, an unstoppable force met an immovable object—green eyes staring into brown.
"You have balls, kid." Lu put his hand on Connor's left shoulder and leaned in to whisper in his ear. "But there is no scenario where this ends good for you." He applied pressure, and Connor's shoulder felt like it would dislocate any minute.
Forcing the pain out of his mind and refusing to show any sign of discomfort on his face, Connor whispered back, "Lu, you're really close to me right now. Are you—are you hitting on me?"
******
"I will do everything in my power to live up to my name. Whatever strength I have, whatever power flows in my blood, will be sworn to fulfilling the prophecy."
******
"Now," she said, lifting up a grey dress shirt in her left hand and a plain white dress shirt in her right. "What color says 'savior'?"

Conner’s long term girlfriend has decided with graduation it’s time to call it quits maybe they will try again but with her moving across the country she doesn’t want to do long distance. Conner took the summer before his freshman year off to help out his mom in her shop, and every morning he pushes himself running. It’s while on his morning run that he encounters a beautiful girl his age in the woods wearing a business suit. Conner takes the risk asks her out but is turned down with the condition that if it’s meant to be he will meet her again and she will say yes. Imagine his surprise when he arrives to work later and encounters the same girl this time she agrees to a date.

While Conner’s relationship with his ex has moved back into a friendship his new relationship with Laren has quickly turned into a fast friendship growing each day. However it’s clear that Laren is hiding something and after an encounter with Morgan he learns that more is going on than he realized but before he can learn any more his ex-calls him and he rushes off to help her only to find she’s been attacked. Conner rushes off to save Laren after his encounter with Katie learning that the Elites are after his new friend and he will have to risking his life to save her. Suddenly Conner is thrust into a world he knows almost nothing about and it’s going to take all his luck to not end up locked away.

I liked Conner he’s an interesting character who has a good heart after all he even stayed friends with his ex-girlfriend which never happens. I really like the chemistry between him and Laren while it’s just a budding relationship I see a strong future for the pair. If only Katie doesn’t get in the way of the two after all she’s had her chance. I like Morgan as a supporting character she’s shown to have Conner’s best interest and I’m curious to see more of her.

I picked up The Beast Within a while back based on the cover art and the synopsis as a kindle freebie. I hate to admit typically they are forgotten. However the cover for The Beast Within is eye catching enough that it caught my attention this week. The story is written from the prospective of Conner which I found refreshing for a paranormal young adult novel. I found the concept for the Elites unique the idea of the different supernatural community having their own council of elders was interesting. I found the story captivating right from the start it was hard to put down I wanted to know more about Conner and who the elites are. The Beast Within is an action packed novel filled with suspense and a little romance to create an intricate story. I found the book well written it flows from start to finish creating a unique story. This is my first book by the author but I know I need to finish the series because Conner is such a great character it was easy to connect with him. I did get The Beast Within as a kindle freebie and it exceeded my expectations for a freebie. I really did enjoy the book plus the cover is stunning.

It's not about vampires, werewolves, or entirely about witches, and shapeshifters. But the supernatural beings in this story bears a striking resemblance to these beings from their description. For example they have fangs, and their eyes colors shift to a different color when they take their true form. Also, the witch prefers to be called a sorceress. These beings are known as Elites, a species of people with extraordinary inhuman abilities who control the worlds continents unbeknownst to humans.

Even though the story is told in third-person narrative, it focuses on Connor Moore's life. I feel I can easily bond with Connor as a character, the story clearly shows the kind of person he is and his depicted relaxed demeanor makes this book a stress free read. Always love books with a male protagonist, something about a male character gives a more calming effect to a story, no angst or unnecessary insecurities. Connor found out he is the son of a once revered savior of the Elites and now he is expected to follow in his footsteps. I think Connor handled his new scary path calmly, perhaps a bit too calm. I understood his doubts and fears about his role in his new world but hoped he would eventually believe in himself.

I like reading about vampires and werewolves(shapeshifters) and even though this book wasn't specifically about those I was able to get my fix. They don't have to always be vampires I guess just as long as there are fangs in the story. The only thing that's puzzling about this story is Connor's seemingly strong feelings for both Katie and Laren. I really do hope this is not a triangle, Katie was not introduced in a good light to me so my loyalties are with Laren. Can't wait to see how the tests goes for Connor and if he finally shares his observation of Faust(a villain) and his dream with someone, preferably Morrigan(the sorceress).

Eighteen Year Old Conner Moore has always felt there was something different about himself. When he meets Lauren and her brother Lu in the middle of the woods, he can sense there is something different about them as well, but what he doesn't know.

Unfortunately, as his path with Lauren continues to cross, and he finds himself more and more attracted to her, he finds himself thrust into a world he knows nothing about - and a world his once thought "dead beat" dad had a role in.

Now, Conner must accept the truth about himself - and not only find his place in this new world, but accept the new-found responsibility that now rests squarely on his shoulders.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

I got this book simply because the models used on the cover appeared to be the same models used for Demetri and Alyssa on the cover of Pull by Rachel Van Dyken (albeit having a Cullen-ish twist to their eyes).

I know.. I know... that is totally not a good reason to get a book.. but in this case.. I was NOT DISAPPOINTED!

The story-line flows smoothly - there is always something happening that keeps the readers' interest, but does not leave them in the dark or become too confusing. The characters are well developed - each with their own quirks and their own flaws. The flaws and quirks are what add to the plot rather than take away from it. It was obvious from reading how much thought the author put into creating this "secret" world and the characters that inhabit it.

I very much enjoyed this series, and I absolutely cannot wait to read the rest of it! Do they all survive? Is he the Savoir? And just who is this other evil that is threatening to end it all?

*Review abridged from my book review blog, Reading the Alphabet.

When The Beast Within opens, readers meet Connor Moore, an 18-year-old in the summer between high school graduation and the start of college. He’s the boy next door with something more to him. What this more is, he doesn’t know, but after a chance encounter with Laren while running in the woods, secrets Connor didn’t know existed begin to be uncovered.

Laren is flirty, mysterious, and tightlipped about exactly what her family is involved with beyond real estate. Connor is immediately intrigued by her…maybe it’s a good thing that Katie, a "girl next door" type character, recently broke up with him. Yanez sets up a possible love triangle in future The Elite series installments quite nicely and I look forward to seeing it play out amongst the action. Yanez has definitely created some strong and interesting characters.

The plot flows smoothly and features plenty of action amid this tale of self-discovery. I was drawn in with Connor’s charm, and by the time he starts seeking answers about himself I was hooked. When he realizes what he is and what he has the potential to do, will he be able to live up to the expectations of others and the tests they have set before him?

The Beast Within is a great start to what I hope will be a strong series. I can easily see why it was optioned for a film and you can bet that I’ll be heading to the movies when it opens.

The Beast Within is a paranormal novel, the first in a series, centering around a an eighteen-year-old boy named Connor Moore. His whole life he’s known he was different, he just didn’t know how. Being raised by his mother after his father mysteriously left them, Connor has taken to sports and exercise as an outlet for the anger he has inside. He taps into that anger – that power – to push himself further and further. What he doesn’t know though is that power is much more than he could imagine.

It all begins when he meets a woman named Laren, a young business woman in the middle of the woods under strange circumstances. Connor has an instant attraction to her, and through odd events he gets her to agree to a date. As they grow closer, mysteries Connor has dealt with his whole life start to answer themselves, and he’s tossed into a whole new world where nothing makes sense and he’s the chosen hero of a race of people he didn’t even know existed a week before.

Is he really the savior?

Will he be trialed for committing an illegal act he did in order to save Laren’s life?

Did his father really abandon him and his mother?

All questions Connor battles with in The Beast Within.

Exceptionally written, expertly paced, and throughly entertaining, this book is definitely worth the read!

First off I just love the beautiful cover. Gorgeous people and gorgeous eyes. I couldn't give it 5 stars only because I didn't like how the story started. I thought the first encounter between Connor and Laren was not believable.

After getting over the first encounter the book starts getting really really good. After having fate help out Connor and Laren the I just couldn't put the book down. It was fast paced with new encounters and some possible enemies. I just loved how Conner and Laren start to grow and develop.

All the characters you start to meet are great but I think Laren's family was portrait to harshly. It's a family and family is always a little complicated. The relationships between Laren and Connor, Connor and Katie are very different and I was so happy to read it. Connor to me be seemed like such a great guy and stays all through out the story even after having his life turn upside down. I love that in main characters.

I think Jonathan Yanez did a great job on this amazing first book. I would definitely recommend this book and read anything Jonathan Yanez comes out with.

Definitely what I was expecting loved the book and the creative writing the description were a bit short but the book was perfect. It was a fast read so you really get into in and once there you are hooked. What got me to read the book was mostly thanks to the synopsis, it was one of those storylines that no one can pass on. Especially because you will love the characters and the plot.
But there was something about Katie I didn't like I don't know what it was I'm guessing its got to do with her breaking up with Connor, cause honestly breakups suck.
As soon as he met Laren I knew that something was going to happen, I just love books that have to do with forbidden love and creatures especially if there is some mystery to it to. I did not find the book cheesy or way to sweet, as I sometimes find that authors over do it. It's rough around the edges but has enough emotion to soften it up a bit.
I loved the book it was fantastic and fun to read. And the cover is amazing

As the introduction to a series, this was done well. A young man learns that he is connected to an Elite form of life, similar to humans, and yet totally different, more powerful, and more dangerous too. This first book was an introduction to the characters, and gives the reader an idea of what is to follow. Obviously, some of that is how the young man learns to adjust to and use his new powers, and remain "human" at the same time.

I found it interesting enough to keep me reading, but not quite enough that I am in a rush to go out and get the next, or rest of the books, in this series. Although I enjoy some fantasy, I was not bowled over by this one.

I was pleasantly surprised by this paranormal young adult/ mature adult book.

The main character Connor Moore is everything you want in a male lead. I like that, although you saw where the book was generally going due to foreshadowing in the Connor's dreams and cryptic ramblings of an old woman, there were still a few surprises in the plot. There was no knee jerk insta-love that is expected of the young adult genre.

Over all I give it 4 stars.

I got this one when it was offered for free because I wanted to try a new author. I was pleasantly surprised to find this was a really good book. Connor made a great male protagonist, and I love that he is a morally responsible hero. The story progressed at a good pace and the character development was very well done. Definitely a paranormal story I wouldn't mind my teenager reading.

Well done, Yanez! I'm looking forward to reading The Trials.

For every good recommendation I get from goodreads every once in awhile something I don't like "sneaks" in.

This book starts strong and only a few pages later it starts plummeting. There were too many things I disliked to list them but thankfully it was relatively short.

For the first time in a long time I finished a first book in the series without the need to read the following ones.

It was okay, but it shifts gears and looks to be another of those books that should have been one book but was divided into three so they could sell more books. I would rather have one good, long book than three so-so books.

The Beast Within - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Do you like Hunger Games & Twilight? Then Jonathan Yanez' 1st Book in his excellent YA The Elite Series, The Beast Within, is definitely for you!

MC Conner's heart is broken when his high-school sweetheart Katie says she's going cross-country to college and though she still wants to be friends, she won't be his girlfriend any more...and that's just the start of Conner's worst day ever. Read the whole trilogy to find out who Lauren and the Elites are, how Conner must risk his life to save Lauren, how he finds out the truth about his absentee father's mysterious past and also what led Conner to the events on this momentous day.
Two more books follow, but will they fully answer all the questions you're sure to have at the end of The Beast Within?
Only Mr Yanez knows - and he's not telling in Book 1!

Interesting paranormal read

This book hit all of the basics, good story, well developed characters, etc, and knocked them out of the park. Now if only Connor or Sara had a brain.
Why would you not tell your guide about the things you've seen and heard? This kind of misleading crap is why only three stars instead of four; I cannot stand deliberately stupid characters or plot lines.

More than once

This is truly worth reading more than one time. This was the first book that I read that was written by Jonathan Yanez. Shortly after this the i ran into him on facebook. He invited me to join his readers group. I happily joined and have been enchanted by his books and his style of writing ever since. There is no need for foul language. He is creative enough not to need them. His works stand on their own. Read and be enchanted. You won't be sorry.

“We’re basically both superheroes.”–-Conner

The Beast Within starts off a teaser: three days in the future where we learn that Conner Moore is going to be having a really, really bad day. Really bad. Going back three days, we learn of how a simple run in the woods leads him to that very bad day. Well, to be fair, it really wasn’t just the meeting with the lovely and mysterious Laren that triggered the events; it turns out, it goes back way farther… to the father he never got to meet. Actually, you can even say it goes even more farther back to the truce between the Five Families, a group of elite…umm… Elites, since it’s that truce that’s being challenged, which leads us to–-I’m sure you can guess–-Conner’s really, really bad day.

Told mainly through Conner’s POV in third person, The Beast Within slowly reveals the presence and background of the Elites as well as Conner’s role in the secret society. Conner seems like an all-around high school superstar. He’s great at sports, good-natured (prone to break out in laughter when alone), protective of his friends, and has a great girlfriend–well, *had*. Aside from not knowing his father and growing up with a single mother struggling to make ends-meet in her flower store, there really isn’t anything compelling about his backstory to give him depth.

In the start of the book, his major concerns are his ex-girlfriend wanting to remain friends and telling his mother that he doesn’t want to accept any sport scholarships so that he can stay nearby and help her out. Then he meets Laren and I really liked their interactions when they talked, but those moments were brief, so it turned more into a “telling” me the reader how they got closer instead of really “showing” me how they could fall for each other. The first part moved pretty quickly as brief scenes flowed into each other, resulting in a passing day. It made it difficult to get pulled into the book since I felt like we were just hopping from one quick scene to another.

About a third into the book, it got much better as the details seemed more flushed out as the paranormal elements are revealed. This is when I started getting interested and felt myself getting drawn into the book. About half-way through, the timeline syncs up to the teaser of Conner’s really bad day. The book then turns into a commonly used and entertaining storyline of a prophesied hero to save the day (won’t say anything more than that so I won’t spoil anything).

The second half of the book was interesting and definitely held my attention as we learn more about the history of the Elites, witness a trial where Conner must save his friends, get introduced to a major baddy, and watch as Conner trains to pass a set of Tests to show his worth… and then the book ends. There really isn’t any resolution to any of the plot lines–main or sub! This is definitely not a standalone novel and instead is a good introduction and first book to what will hopefully be a great series. If you like YA paranormal fantasy where we have a good-natured and likable hero trying to save the world (while dealing with what is probably going to be a tough love triangle), you should check this one out! This is a 4 out of 5 for me!
