Cast-Off Cocker Spaniels

Rate this book
The perfect book for any Cocker Spaniel lover! After having several stories published in Happy Tails Books' Lost FOUND! series as well as many articles about rescue in local newspapers, Becky Corwin-Adams wrote her own Cast-Off Cocker Spaniels. This book highlights her foster and forever dogs' antics and challenges. A portion of proceeds is donated back to Cocker Spaniel rescue. Nine-year-old Rags was found roaming the streets as a stray. When she landed at the shelter, she needed six baths to free her from the oil in which she was covered. Her little rear had no fur, and the skin in that area was as tough as leather. Her issues were severe, including water-filled blisters on her feet and legs. Poor Rags was the saddest-looking Cocker I had ever seen. Her eyes were downcast and droopy, and the fur around them was gone. She certainly was not very attractive. For many long months we treated Rags with antibiotics, and we bathed her three times a week with medicated shampoo. She was a good patient, never complaining even though she had to soak in the bathtub for 10 minutes each time. Finally, our efforts paid off, and a new dog emerged. At adoption events, people commented on Rags’ beauty and her soulful face. This was progress! Now, our task was to convince some special person to look beyond her age… Does Rags find a home? Buy the book to find out!

"So... You Think You Want A Cocker Spaniel?"

When this author was very young, her family had a Cocker spaniel. After getting married and raising children to adults, she feels like an empty nester. She and her husband agree that adding a dog is the right time. Her niece has a Cocker and Becky decides that's the breed for her. Being good citizens, she and her husband get in contact with the Defiance County Humane Society in Ohio. Before long, they call and have a dog for them. Brittany is quite the "Devil Dog" demolishing pillows, toys, bushes ... it's truly amazing the author and her husband pursued another Cocker after they were so abused by Brittany. Then they added Bubba, a red male Cocker who had previously been placed into two homes and again returned to the breeder. Bubba had been obviously abused and neglected without vaccines and has an extreme heartworm condition. After weeks of special medications he returned to good health and became a distinguished dog pictured on a calendar and chosen Dog of the Year at the local WalMart. Then came Barkley, again from the shelter; the most well mannered dog yet. Soon after Brittany's passing, Becky and her husband get involved in fostering Cocker spaniels, taking in many other unique Cockers. This short story reflects some of the problems that special-needs dogs bring to a new home from a shelter. It takes extraordinary people with compassion and patience to relax such animals where they can gain confidence and happiness in their forever homes. This story gives good guidance on buying a dog from a reputable breeder, who does not breed their dogs for profit like shameful puppy millers. A reputable breeder is selective in how they breed their dogs to AKC Breed Standards to improve structure, temperament, and to avoid genetic health issues. Know the type of dog that will fit comfortably with your lifestyle. If you are undecided, consider volunteering at your local shelter to become familiar with the different dogs, their attitudes, activity levels, and sociability. Dogs have been great companions for hundreds of years. They are truly God's gift to mankind. Open your heart and home and find the dog that's right for you. I certainly applaud Becky and her husband for all the time and finances in providing loving care to Cocker spaniels and to their rescue associations. Thank you.

My local book store supports local authors and I try to also by buying their books and reading them. I was drawn to this one because it was about canine rescue, which I am involved in with boxer dogs. I nearly always learn something new or get ideas to do something differently with my fosters by reading books such as this or talking with other foster families.
I've been fostering boxers since 1990 after the death of my first boxer which I got from the shelter where I was working at the time. Fostering can be quite difficult, some dog's previous owners have ruined them almost beyond repair. Numerous or hard to handle behavior problems are quite common. Some have simply been conpletely spoiled, demanding to be feed or wanting attention constantly. Others arrive without any behavior or medical problems, spayed or neutered and be ready for adoption with in a week.
Ths book was quite a disappointment, it's not really a story. More of a journal, each dog has a chapter, but the paragraphs are a list of statements about the particular dog.
She doesn't seem to know much about canine behavior, anthromorphizing nearly every characheristic. I'd think after fostering so many years, she'd have learned more about canine behavior than her writing indicates. She appeared to be quite lucky as far as getting only dogs with good temperaments. Ones that didn't require a lot of work to make them into good family pets.
While reading I had assumed they were a young couple, there wasn't a mention of children until late in the book. From the photograph on the back, the writer looks to be about my age. But to be honest, by the wording used, I thought a child had written it.
I'll probably give it to someone who has cocker spaniels or return it to the book store for credit.

The cover pulls the reader right in, doesn’t it? Who could not feel pity for the little pup roaming the rails?

Now, Ms. Corwin-Adams did not pick up stray cocker spaniels off the train tracks. But there were some that seemed that way. From childhood, and her first cocker spaniel, Ginger, she has had a love affair with this breed, and it shows in this book.

From 1994 until the present day, she has had a continuous parade of cockers dwelling in her home. And like a proud mother displaying pictures of her kids, Ms. Corwin-Adams tells lovingly of each one of them–how they came into her life, the crazy and terrible and loving things they experienced together, and the final moments of many of the little dogs.

Currently, she is living with seven of the breed, and her husband is not only happily cooperative, he is also guilty of bringing home new dogs (usually from rescue groups) that soon wriggle their way into her heart.

She has had a long and wonderful relationship with Columbus Cocker Rescue in Ohio, from where she received most of her dogs. She dedicates the book to this group.

More power to her, to her tender, dog-loving heart, and to all of those who spend time and money to bettering the lives of castoff dogs everywhere.

"Cast-Off Cocker Spaniels" is the heartwarming story of one family's experiences with adopted cocker spaniels, both as foster and permanent pets. The story begins with Brittany, aka "The Devil Dog," and is filled with amusing and entertaining anecdotes of the author's various cocker spaniels. The book is entertaining and inspirational, and it's for a good cause: some proceeds are donated to Cocker Spaniel rescue!

I would recommend this book to anyone who adores dogs, especially cocker spaniels. We dog lovers enjoy trading stories, and this book is full of cute passages that will keep you interested, laughing, and sometimes even crying.

Becky´s genuine love for her Cocker Spaniels shines through in every word of this sweet and enchanting book. Becky speaks directly to the reader through her conversation style of writing. Each and every chapter is dedicated to one of the Cocker Spaniels that her husband Randy and Becky have adopted or fostered. It is said that every dog has it´s day, and in Becky Corwin-Adams hands this is certainly true. Their stories will leave you in awe of Becky´s devotion to her beloved Cockers and the various dog charities she supports.

In this memoir of canine companionship, you can feel the love the author and her husband have for their pet family members. It did almost seem as if they had a goal of having one Cocker Spaniel in each of the available color patterns. I appreciated that they responded to each dog according to the individual personality. Told with compassion and humor, this descriptive collection of memories will appeal to animal lovers. It tells of a different time but relates very well to present day.

I was gifted an uncorrected proof to review.

Cast-Off Cockers

Have fostered and rescued cocker spaniels for almost two decades, I was sure I knew how this book was going, but I purchased it anyway. Some of the stories about her dogs were the same as my fosters' stories, except that I didn't keep as many. Sweet happy endings, but the writing style with short choppy sentences was distracting to me.
