Lila Felix is full of antics and stories. She refused to go to Kindergarten after the teacher made her take a nap on the first day of school. She staged her first protest in middle school. She almost flunked out of her first semester at Pepperdine University because she was enthralled with their library and frequently was locked in. Now her husband and three children have to put up with her rebel nature in Louisiana where her days are filled with cypress trees, crawfish, and of course her books and writing. She writes about the ordinary people who fall extraordinarily in wild, true love.

It’s funny how much one summer can change you.

Down N Derby is the third book in the Love and Skate series by Lila Felix. I love these books! They are ya at it’s finest :D The Black brothers are incredible.
Owen was the brawn, Falcon was the brains, and Mad was the clown.
These are the type of guys you want your sons to become and your daughters to date. The third book is about the youngest Black brother, Maddox.
 photo f6c1dbbd-0b33-4834-8c86-ba0c5fdd2fd1_zpsc3543155.jpg

Let's catch up with the Black brothers... Owen has been married to Nellie for a while now, Falcon and Reed are engaged. Maddox is running away. After living with a secret for many years, he has to get out there and find the truth about who he is. Maddox is crazy and funny, but he also has another side. He has an issue with being touched. By anyone in any way. It just creeps him out. He and his cousin Nixon sneak out after graduation and go on the road, to find what they are looking for.

 photo 8dec3f91-accc-4fe1-ac2b-af33a2895b72_zps4adc42d3.jpg

Maddox just leaves without telling anyone what he is doing or where he is going. The whole family is freaking out, Falcon and Reed have put the wedding on hold and everything. Mad and Reed are close, so he calls her occasionally to let her know all is well, but swears her to secrecy. On their trip they cross paths with a girl. Her name is Storey and she is a pin-up model.

 photo 7e6b9318-e756-4818-a44a-0406ae77fa8a_zps248db59c.jpg

Storey and Maddox meet by chance on the beach. They go out a few times, then something amazing happens. When he touches Storey, he doesn’t get that ‘feeling.’ Storey and Maddox are good for each other. They are exactly what one another needs.
She’d woken me. I was alive. Not just breathing or moving, but alive.

After an abusive relationship, Storey needs to know what it’s like to be with a real man that will treat her right.
Being good to her was easy. She tried to make it hard, but it was so damned easy.

“You treat me like there’s a crown on my head.”

“To me, there is.”

Maddox needs Storey, and she is there for him. On the plus side- she is ‘American Horror Storey’ in her derby league.

 photo 2900e004-2a7a-45fc-8038-6b5dc01202ef_zpsc688be9d.jpg

I loved the two of them together! They were so sweet and funny!
“So you think I’m hot?”

“Come on, you know you’re hot.”

“Yeah, but it doesn’t count unless you think I’m hot.”

I just loved this book! All of Lila Felix’s books are amazing! She writes the best stories, characters and THE BEST GUYS! I know this book was about Maddox primarily, but we got a peek into Reed, Falcon, and Nixon’s heads... Maddox was great but I LOVE FALCON- TEAM FALCON RIGHT HERE!!!
“If you ever need to know the right thing to do, ask Falcon. He won’t steer you wrong.”

Let me be your resting place. Crawl into my soul and sleep until yours is healed. You’re mine to shelter. You’re mine to protect.

Falcon is by far my favorite Black brother. On the outside he is this sexy bad boy with a mohawk, tattoos, piercings etc. But he is the dependable brother. The responsible brother. He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body and Reed is the luckiest girl to get him! I want more of this series... and really just MORE FALCON!

If you are looking for a fun ya series with hot tattooed brothers, bad ass roller derby girls and a story that will leave you with a smile on your face, look no further!!!

"I've been kissed a lot but it I've never kissed anyone. I've never purposefully wanted to run my fingers through a girl’s hair, take her face in my hands and kiss her until her toes curled. I've really never wanted to—until you.”

Maddox. Sweetheart extraordinaire.

Maddox thinks he's a ruiner. He thinks everything he touches turns to crap because of things that have been thrown at him. He thinks everything bad that happens to his family can be contributed to one thing, one event, that happened when he was a baby. It was an amazing, heart-breaking, sweet, loving thing. But Maddox, as most broken guys do, shoulder the responsibility for everything and he thinks he's doing himself and his family a favor by heading out on his road trip to find is real dad, but doesn't tell his family. Just hits the road in the middle of the night and employs his cousin to help him do it.

But oh, Maddox. You are one of the sweetest, greatest guys I've ever read about. The things that came out of that sweet mouth literally gave me goose bumps. Neither of them hold back. They say what they need to say and I wish I had had that kinda courage when I was dating my husband. Maddox especially was all kinds of sweet, swoony, yumminess.

And Storey. I loved how she wasn't this insecure girl who was stick thin and constantly wondered if the guy thought she was pretty. Storey is a model and knows that she's pretty. She's not snotty or conceited, she's just confident. It was great to see a girl in a YA book that doesn't need everyone around her to tell her she's pretty and special.

These two had amazing chemistry. The obstacles that arose were so realistic and to watch two people who were so obviously committed to each other was not only endearing, but refreshing. This is something lacking in books these days, IMHO. It's not insta-love. That's not what I'm talking about. If done right, the author can make two people know that they are the one and it's not only believable but you want to jump in the pages and feel that for yourself.

I don't think it's a secret that I'm not a fan of indecisive Protags. These two knew exactly what they wanted and I fell in love with the story because of it. And we still get a feel for the family we fell in love with during the previous books. And that isn't all. You think the Love & Skate series is over? Nada.

6 out of 5 beautiful, believable, swoon-swoon-swoon and then some more swoon, yumtastic, clean-but-still-sexy stars from me.

I have really come to love Lila Felix's Love & Skate series! The stories are consistently lovely and charming, and they always manage to put a smile on my face.

Maddox, Maddox, Maddox. Down 'N' Derby picks up where How It Rolls leaves off. My boy Maddox discovered as a boy that he was adopted as a baby, and now he's taken off with his cousin Nixon in search of his birth father. You know he's going to find so much more than a bio dad, though, right? In California, following up on a lead about his birth father, Maddox meets Storey, a transplanted Louisiana native. She works as a pin-up girl for car shows (has, you guessed it, a passion for roller derby) and had learned some hard lessons when it comes to guys. There are issues to be worked through and lessons to be learned, and, in the end, I'd bet love is going to conquer all :-)

Down 'N' Derby is a delightful addition to this series, and, for those of you who have not tried Lila Felix yet, this series is THE place to start! If these characters and this family don't make you feel welcome and lift your spirits, well, I don't have much hope that anything will. The big plus of this book, for me, is that I was able to spend more time with my favorite of the Black brothers, Falcon. He and Reed's story continues in Down 'N' Derby, and it makes this book SING for me. There's loving. There's skating. There are hot boys with impeccable manners and gentlemanly ways. What more could a girl ask for?!

Lila, I'm ready for more!

Eh. I was kind of hoping for more with this one. I really loved the first two in this series, but I was kind of disappointed with this one.

I get the need of Mad having to leave to find what he was looking for. I get that. What I didn't get?

I liked Storey, but

Overall, it was okay.

I LOVE FALCON. Maddox's "Storey" was a gooden. The "epilogue" at the end ... So refreshing! It was a great POV. Felix thanks so much for writing about such a wonderful family.

What I love about this story is that all the past characters still play huge roles. Yes we are getting Maddox's story but everyone is still there and their stories haven't ended yet. So even though we are following Maddox on his journey to find his biological father, something he thinks is his to face alone, we still get scenes of everyone back home.

Reed and Falcon are going through loads of crap thanks to the fall out of Maddox leaving. The tension is growing daily between the two and Reed is not sure she can handle the stress of it much longer. It is hurting her to the core to keep the secret of Maddox’s whereabouts from Falcon. Nellie and Owen are going through their own problems, though theirs is not as front and center as Reed and Falcon, but it is adding up just the same. Maddox’s mother and father are racked with guilt and miss him terribly. And soon Nixon will face his own family drama. It is just one cluster bomb of problems and no one is safe.

But wait! There is one silver lining in the midst of it all: Storey. Oh, yes. Just you wait until to you meet this pint sized pin up model. You guys are gonna go gaga over her. She is the very thing that Maddox is searching for…his anchor, his miracle…and he just doesn't know it yet. But let me tell you, their story is sweet and beautiful and absolutely full of life. Seeing these two fall in love before our very eyes was…breathtaking. A romance that is worthy to be told.

Although Falcon is by far my favorite male character of all from the series, Maddox isn’t too shabby himself. I loved how he revealed his true nature to Storey before he even met her when he defended her honor on the beach. That shows that he is a gentleman and absolutely swoon worthy. Like fan-yourself-dear-me swoon worthy. Like ‘what about those different colored eyes and kissable dimple swoon worthy. Ok now I am rambling. But at that moment, on the beach, I fell head over heels in love with him. I knew he was one of the good guys right then and there. And from then on I looked forward to more of these ‘Aww’ moments. Just more of Maddox.

Felix’s characters become a close friend you care dearly about. You hate to see them hurt…you hate to see them suffer…you just want to make them ok again. At least that is how I feel when I read her books. I connect with her characters and fall deeply in love with her books. The stories she puts out are real and true to life. Felix has a way of pulling a reader into a story and making them feel a part of it. So much so you find you don’t want to leave it and face reality. You find you’d rather hang out with her characters than your own real life friends. Why is that?

DOWN N’ DERBY is a fantastic read that any fan of the series is sure to love. I adored it and look forward to the next installment of the series...CAUGHT IN A JAM. I am still squealing with excitement over the last few pages when we get a sneak peek at Nixon. Trust me peoples, this whole book rocked.

Fav lines…

My future husband held me as I cried for my wedding, for his lost brother, for Sylvia’s heartache, for my best friend. (Reed)

“I’m so sorry, Reed. I just got frustrated and aggravated and everything in between. I lost sight of us. Let me be your resting place. Crawl into my soul and sleep until yours in healed. You’re mine to shelter. You’re mine to protect and I’ve been slacking off. And wedding or not, in all ways but one, I’m your husband. Start trusting me like I am-please.” (Falcon)

I struck a pose in the mirror and then rolled my eyes at myself. Who was I kidding? I could bring the boys to the yard but I wanted to make this one stay. (Storey)

And when I was given permission to kiss the bride, I kissed her so that when we were old and gray she’d touch her wrinkled lips and remember this day. (Not going to say who this is…it’s a surprise)

I loved the first two books!!! There both were outstanding!! When Lila announced this book, I flipped because I knew that it would be just as good as the others.

Best part of the book: The whole story was amazing!! I don't even know where to begin. I love Maddox as much as I loved Owen and Falcon. This story was not like the other ones. Maddox and his cousin Nixon are on a road trip. However, this was much different than a typical road trip, Maddox is searching for his biological father because he found out that he was adopted.

Maddox and Nixon head town to town but keep coming up empty. It is not until they hit the west coast they get a lead and Maddox finds Storey. LOVE her!!! She and Maddox are a perfect fit.

Now, I want to tell you every detail of this book and gush on for forever, but I won't spoil it. Just trust me... READ IT!

I do have to say one thing. LILA FELIX did something that NO AUTHOR has done. Her epilogue is the best ever!!!! Every author will be copying her!!! Excellent job!!

Not so great about the book: There is nothing wrong with this book! Bring on the next one Lila!!

I’ve noticed an interesting trend with the Love and Skate series (At least #2 and 3 thus far), is that while the book focuses on setting up a couple and telling their story. The juiciest bits and most satisfying of parts seem to wrap up things from the previous book before it. You really get a sense of it being one cohesive story. Or more like a big bowl of Sylvia's pasta passed around the table from one person to the next. And with Down ‘N’ Derby this is no exception.

ROAD TRIP! Sorry, but that’s one of the things (along with toga parties) that need to be announced with a shout. Maddox and his cousin Nixon set off on a cross-country road trip to try and find Maddox’s biological father and maybe even himself. Along the way he runs into Storey, and introduces a few Black family values into Southern California.

We also get much more Falcon and Reed, and this is Falcon’s time to soar. (Nellie made me use that pun I swear!) We get to really meet the guy everyone swoons over and we’re treated to the turbulent and touching next chapter in their story.

Another great addition to the series!

Now, where can I get a Honey Bee Pizza?!

Well, I didn't think she could do it because I always say this, but Lila topped herself again. I LOVED Down 'N' Derby. I have to say that again. I LOVED Down 'N' Derby. I think what did it for me was Maddox and his "issue" he had with girls. After reading "How It Rolls," I never saw this side of him coming. We see this hot and sexy, sweet, kind yet vulnerable guy fall in love for the first time in his life. Talk about tugging on your heart strings! If this book had a pinky finger, I was so wrapped around it, I don't think I'll ever be cut loose. The other great thing is we still get a taste of our favorites from the other books in the series, and it's so much fun to see how they've developed. Lastly, I have to mention Lila's descriptors…that girl kills it and makes me laugh like crazy. My favorite one from this book was, "Comeherium Cookieosa!"
5 fabulous stars for Down 'N' Derby and if you haven't read the other books in this series, you need to do so. They are equally as good. Thanks Lila, for giving us such an amazing series!

Lila Felix has just become one of those authors that I need to read everyone of her books. Although I have one more book left in this series I can say with all honesty that it will be one of my favorites. Lila has a way of pulling you in so you can feel every heartbreak, every smile, every bit of love. I need to add that last little surprise at the end of the book was something completely unexpected! It was amazing and I loved it! I must go now, Rex's story is awaiting!

Down N Derby is book 3 in the Love and Skate series by Lila Felix. I became a big fan of Lila's from reading this series. This is Maddox Black's story, the youngest of the three brothers and once again Lila Felix, did not disappoint. We met Maddox in the first book Love and Skate and loving all of the the Black family as I do, I could not wait for Maddox's story and to find out the mystery behind who his real parents were.

Maddox found out when he was younger that his mother was really his aunt. His biological mother died shortly after giving birth to him and asked her twin sister, Sylvia to take care of Maddox for her. When Maddox found out that Sylvia wasn't his biological mother and that his real father took off before he was even born, things started to change for Maddox. When someone tried to touch him or hug him he would become twitchy and feel very uncomfortable. This is something that has been going on for quite some time, but also something that most people don't know about him. He decides to take a road trip to find his real father and enlists his cousin Nixon to come along for the ride. They sneak out in the middle of the night, for fear of his family trying to stop him if they knew where he was going He doesn't think his family would understand his reasons for needing to do this. He keeps in touch with Reed while on the road but asks her to promise not to tell anyone. But what Maddox doesn't realize is that asking Reed to keep a big secret like this from Falcon could possibly cause a strain in their relationship. While on the road, things start to change for Maddox, especially when he meets Storey.

I loved Storey! She is/was a derby girl who is now a pinup model in California trying to make enough money to go back home and go to college. She is a confident, feisty, beautiful girl who is also very down to earth and loveable. When Maddox meets her on the beach for the first time he can't help but being captivated by her. Storey is drawn to Maddox as well but has her guard up just a bit, due to her fear of being hurt again. But when Storey and Maddox meet there is an instant connection which sort of scares Maddox in a way. He has issues with being touched and is afraid that those issues will drive Storey away, but at the same time he can't help the feelings that he has for this girl and needs to get to know her better. Maddox and Storey both have issues from their past that they are trying to cope with. Storey has been hurt in the past by her abusive ex-boyfriend. While Maddox has been carrying around the guilt of his mother's death as well the sacrifices that he believes the Black family had to make in order to take care of him. As they start opening up to each other they start to let their guards down. But can two people who have been hurt and damaged in the past find the love and happiness that they deserve? And can Maddox get past the guilt of his past and live for the future?

I loved Storey and Maddox together. They found a love that was so real and even though they didn't know each other for long it never felt like a love that was rushed. They had a real connection, almost as if it was fate that brought them together. Storey made Maddox feel again, something he thought would never happen. She helped him get through his issues and stood by when it came time to meet his father. Lila Felix took us on a wonderful journey as we learned more about Maddox and the guilt that has been weighing him down for so many years. Maddox is such a loveable character and even at the age of 18 is an amazing and caring person. It will melt your heart to see him find someone like Storey who just wants to love him and help him through his issues. They really are made for each other.

What I love about this series for one is the Black family. They have their issues and some drama just as most families do, but no matter what they are all there to support and love each other. I will admit that Falcon may be my favorite but I still love all three brothers. They each have their own unique personality, which makes them each special in their own way. And let's not forget the wonderful ladies in their lives, who are all just as loveable. Lila Felix has created a cast of characters that you can't help but fall in love with and relate to on a personal level. It's as if you are a part of their family, going through the emotions with them. I loved Nixon and some of the moments between him and Maddox will have you laughing. I love that we still get to see all of the characters from the first two books and see what they have been up to. Some chapters are told from Reed or Falcon's POV so we get to see how Maddox running away has affected everyone. It isn't just about Storey and Maddox. I love this series and cannnot wait for Nixon's story. Another job well done by Lila Felix.

At the beginning of every chapter I love how Lila starts it off with a random thought. Some being funny and witty and some being serious. This one happened to be one of my favorites and actually made me laugh out loud.

I wanna wear my pants backwards today like Kris Kross. What? - Maddox Black

If you are a fan of this series like I am then you will Love Down N Derby. If you have not read this series yet, then what are you waiting for? You will not be disappointed. The first book in the series is Love and Skate, followed by How it Rolls.

I'm a huge fan of Lila Felix and this series. I spent several days taking my time and reading Down N' Derby, much to the detriment of the Author, herself. I didn't want to go too fast and wanted to savor every minute of it. To say that I loved it would be an understatement. Every book in the Love & Skate series gets better and better. First I want to start off by saying how much I love the names of each of her characters. They all have the coolest names!

Maddox learned when he was younger that he is not a "true" Black. His mom and dad are not his actual parents. His mother died during childbirth and asked her twin sister, Sylvia, if she would take care of Maddox for her. This is how Maddox became a member of the Black family. Maddox struggles for years with the thought that he is the reason his mother died and the anger of knowing that his father left them before he was even born. Because of all of this, he as an issue with being touched and gets tingly, but not in a good way. Maddox, decides a road trip is in order to find his father and brings his cousin Nixon along for the ride. We also get to see some of Nixon and the personal issues that he deals with. Maddox and Nixon Leave in the middle of the night, only telling Reed, what he's doing. Reed and Falcon are scheduled to be married and Maddox knows he won't be there for it. Maddox leaving causes a few issues for Reed and Falcon who decide to pot pone there wedding until Maddox is back. Secrets are kept and it puts a strain on their relationship. Okay, so you now get the preface, but not the meat. I don't give spoilers...

Along this journey we meet Storey, a beautiful pinup model that's had an extremely horrific past relationship. She's feisty, but has her share of demons. She catches the eye of Maddox. Or I should say they catch the eye of each other. We are taken for a ride with Maddox and Nixon in search of his father with a couple of stops along the way

Can I just say, that I laughed so hard I was shaking my bed. The moments between Nixon and Maddox were hysterical. I made a point of texting Lila immediately. HYSTERICAL! The banter is one of the best aspects of Lila's writing. Take all of the funny moments away for a moment and they don't compare to the way you feel and care about each and every character. The story had my heart tugged on more than one occasion. I love these characters. Each and every one. As the story goes along we really get a sense of Maddox's anguish and the demons he's carried for nine long years. We are introduced to another character along the way, that had me begging Lila for another book, just for him.

True to Lila's writing, she puts everything into each and every story, that's full of heart and soul. She has a way of making you feel you're right there watching and wanting to wrap you're arms around each of the characters shoulders, telling them everything will be okay. I was affected by the story line and the absolute realness as well as the guilt, that we sometimes feel. There is always a meaning to every book and something to take from it. This, I truly appreciate. I'm a passionate reader and it struck several different chords with me. It has everything from forgiveness, acceptance to showing the strength of relationships. She also did something fascinating with the very end, that I will not reveal. You need to read it to see. Let's just say that Lila took a chance and did something absolutely different and amazing. I felt like I was there and I cried.

With each book written, we get to see every character and watch their growth. And that makes them all the more real. I'm so thankful that past characters don't get lost along the way with each story. This is truly a series about family and love.

I'm so proud of Lila as an Author, and so very proud to call her my friend. I hope she knows that this is her calling. This is what she's meant to do. She not afraid to take chances and do something different. The best part is, she makes you feel.

I have just fallen in love with this series and couldn't wait to read the third installment, Down 'N' Derby, which is Maddox's story. Maddox is the youngest of the Black brothers. We read Owen, the oldest brother's story, in book one, and Falcon's story in book two. Of course the stories wouldn't be complete without the derby girls that are the main characters in them, Nellie and Reed. In book three we meet Storey, Maddox's love interest. Maddox has just graduated from high school. He has been carrying a big secret around with him since he was 9 years old, one that not even his brothers know about. He is determined to find his biological father, so he and his cousin Nixon secretly take off on a cross country road trip to do just that. After checking out couple of dead-end leads, the boys wind up in California. It is here that Maddox gets the answers to his questions, and it is here that Maddox begins his road to healing, but unbeknownst to Maddox, the family he left behind is shattered by his disappearance. Reed and Falcon have canceled the wedding until Maddox returns, and for Reed, who is Maddox's best friend, the stress of keeping Maddox's secrets is causing a huge strain on her relationship with Falcon. What will be left of the family when Maddox returns remains to be seen.

I just loved Maddox. He may just be my favorite of the Black brothers. He is sweet, a total hottie, and so funny. He also has some really deep wounds that need that have left him emotionally damanged. His healing process begins when he meets Storey. Storey works as a pin-up model under the name of Missy Hellcat, earning money to go to college. She is also a derby girl and is known as American Horror Storey. Maddox meets Storey in California, on the last leg of a road trip that he and his cousin Nixon have embarked on. Maddox feels and experiences things with Storey that he has never been able to before, and they both find themselves crazy about each other. Storey has her own darkness that she is overcoming, but with Maddox, she finally begins to see the light that accompanies at the other end of the tunnel. Everything seems to be going great until an event occurs that causes Maddox to put his walls back up, and these walls threaten to destroy everything that he and Storey have together.

Down 'N' Derby is a wonderful story with a unique theme that I found fun and entertaining. The whole roller derby aspect provides a freshconcept to this contemporary romance. I absolutely love all the characters and you really get to know them all in depth in this series. I loved that in each book, you still get to see and experience the characters that you have come to know and love in the previous book and find out what's going on in their lives. They are all still very much a part of the story. The romance in Down 'N' Derby is sweet and the relationship between Maddox and Storey was endearing. I also loved the epilogue that Lila Felix wrote. She has done this in a way that I have never seen before, and it was absolutely awesome. Not only does she make you completely satisfied with where the story and the lives of the characters are at now, but she sets you up for a new story that is yet to come. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Down 'N' Derby and I would most definitely recommend it, and the entire series.

This was a Hard review for me to write because I just want to give The Best Dang review Ever and I feel like no matter what I say it will never be enough nor describe how much I LOVED and I mean LOVED Maddox & his story!
For me to say that I haven't been Anticipating the release of Maddox's story would be an Understatement! I squealed like a Giddy school girl getting asked out by the Hottest guy at school on release day!!

Now I know we all Swooned for Owen, Fell in Love with Falcon, BUT Maddox... I feel like a Cougar (LOL) because all I want to do is Pounce on that boy and do Naughty things!!! Maddox makes my insides feel all GOOEY like a melted, warm chocolate covered marshmallow >.~ Most of all I fell in Love with the Gorgeous, Sweet Southern gentleman with Impeccable manners.

Maddox is as Scrumptious as a Yummy pastry you pick up at the corner bakery. What with his Black, wavy hair you just want to grab and run your fingers through while smothering his Luscious mouth with kisses, his 2 different colored eyes that make you weak in the knees when he looks at you, and an athletic body with tattoos spread all about his Magnificent body. Appearance aside Maddox has a Beautiful, Big heart, always there for his family, and a Wonderful sense of humor.

Maddox makes off with his cousin Nixon in tow like 2 thieves in the middle of the night without informing his parents. Maddox knows if he tells them anything they would not let him leave alone. Maddox is adamant he needs to find his Biological father alone. He has so many questions and has so much guilt over his mother's death. Maddox suffers from touch/intimacy issues, he doesn't quite trust anyone completely enough to let his guard down nor feel comfortable to allow affection towards him until he rescues our derby girl Storey.

Storey is a pin-up model scrounging up enough money on each shoot for college. She has a Generous heart, Beautiful soul that Yearns to be Loved for who she is and not what she looks like but most of all wants to be Respected and Treated right. She needs to be Enough for any guy she gives her heart to.
With Storey Maddox feels Free experiencing all these new, exhilarating emotions. The kisses & touches he shares with Storey are Addicting and he Desires her like no other. No more crawling sensations is a Miracle for him.

We come to Reed now who is stuck in between being Truthful with her soon to be husband Falcon and Loyal to her Best Friend Maddox. This in turn causes some friction between the 2 and they hit a rough patch especially when they decide to put on hold their wedding. They don't want to get married without the entire family being present and that includes Maddox/Nixon being home. Falcon is still as Attentive as ever and he doesn't want to push Reed but he senses she is hiding something which makes him pull away a bit. Nellie is still a Riot as ever. Continues making up her own Quirky & Eccentric words, knows when you need cheering up or a laugh. Nixon is just a Fun, Laugh your butt off kind of guy with a Kind Heart you just want to hug like crazy. The guy could use some Love for sure. I am very Excited to read Nixon & Journey's story next!!

Must Read! Buy Today! My Favorite by far! Lila has written another Fantabulous Book!!!!!!

Awww... Man.. I love the Black family... And getting to know Maddox this time...
WOW!!!

Full Review:
Ahhhh....After I finished reading How it Rolls and knew Down N Derby was going to be about Maddox, I was extremely curious. Throughout both books we only see glimpses of him. Just getting the surface of what kind of guy he is....So, I sat patiently...yes, I actually did...until Down N Derby finally released.
So, I now have Down N Derby in my hands and immediately dive in, so excited to be back in the world of the Black Brothers. I have loved EVERY SINGLE one so far and knew I was going to love this one too!! And let me say...Lila does not disappoint. In fact, I would have to say this is my favorite book of the series so far. Do I love Maddox the most? Hmmmm...*taps chin while debating* I really can't answer that question. I really have to be fair and say I love each brother equally. They have their own unique qualities that make your heart melt. But anyway...Back to Maddox's story.
In the beginning of DND, we find out some very trivial information that sets Maddox on his journey across the US. Finding out he was adopted by his aunt, his biological mom's sister, really weighed heavy on him; he needed to discover some things about himself. I think we can all understand that. I know I would want to know more if I was in that situation. I don't agree with the way he handled leaving and keeping his family in the dark, but I do understand he wanted to do this on his own.
While on his travels, he is chauffeured by his cousin Nixon. I also thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him page after page in this fabulous story...Seeing these two interact and finding out more of each one's stories helped me to gain an understanding of who they are. But as the journey comes to an end destination in California, the guys decide to relax some before seeking out Maddox's dad.
This is where the story begins to heat up, because enter stage right....Storey, our cute little pin up girl, modeling her way through to get back home and ultimately pay her way through college. With a chance meeting on the beach, everything escalates and we now have a fresh budding romance.
And oh their relationship is so sweet. So very romantic!! They both brought so much to the relationship and to each other. Seeing fears overcome, stereotypes banished...*sighs* just an overall beautiful love story. I must say...Lila knows how to write the ones that grip your heart and make sure they stay with you FOREVER!!!
I am glad to say that it ended very well. I was happy for some of the events that transpired. Good things have happened with the Black family...and with the epilogue Lila left us...OH WOW....I cannot wait for our next book...
Down N Derby is a book that is written so brilliantly...characters that you feel like you know on a personal basis and can't wait for when you can all get together again. Forming that type of strong connection reveals the magnificent talent that Lila has.
The Love and Skate series is one of my favorites and I hope that you will pick it up and find out how FABULOUS it is!! :D

Book 3 – Down ‘n’ Derby by Lila Felix

4 stars!!

I adore Lila Felix’s style of writing and this one was no exception. It is the cutesy romance that we all love to gush over and so beautifully written. This book is Maddox and Storey’s story.

We only caught little glimpses of Maddox in the previous two books, he found out at a young age that his parents “the Blacks” were in fact his aunt and uncle. His mum had died shortly after giving birth to Maddox and so entrusted his care to her twin sister as the dad was not on the scene. Once Maddox found out about his real identity he became twitchy, he could be touched or touch anybody it literally made his skin crawl, the boy who has never kissed, been loved or been touched…he was totally innocent.

When Maddox graduates at 18, he decides to go on a road trip to find his real father with his cousin Nixon. He sneaks out in the middle of the night as he thinks that the family would not support his decision. As we know from the last book Maddox and Reed are best mates so he does keep in contact with her…however, by Red keeping this a secret from the family what pressures will it out on her relationship with Falcon?? I will say this part of the book was a bit slow in places but it soon sped up when Maddox and Nixon run into Storey.

Storey is a pin up girl model and also another Derby girl. She is currently modelling so that she can pay her way through college. She is confident, determined, uber sexy but has a little problem with relationships. After being hurt badly in her previous one, which was a first real love and long term she finds it hard to trust and love again.

Maddox and Nixon run into her on the beach, again it is a case of sort of instalove but who cares, the way it is written is brilliant and just sucks you in. As I said above, Maddox cannot touch or be touched so this scene after Maddox touches Storey for the first time is beautiful…

“I sat in shock a few more moments before a wide grin spread over my face. I touched her. I touched her – no twitching, no bug crawling under my dermis, nothing but pure ecstasy. I didn’t question why or how, I just knew what was real”

Although they hadn’t known each other very long and they did steam straight into a relationship it didn’t feel rushed, you felt their connection instantly and it was almost as if fate has brought them together. They were both each others saviours to a degree. I loved the way that when they all went to the Black’s Storey was immediately welcomed as you would expect. Storey was instantly recognised as her alter ego from her Derby days so fit in with the girls instantly.

The love that the Black family have for each other is truly amazing, you can feel how the family connects through the pages and you just want to be a part of it. Once again Lila adds her random thoughts to the beginning of each chapter that just make me laugh, although some are a bit more serious, once again they are alternate POV’s which I love.

The ending, touch of genius Lila Felix, I am not going to say anymore but I loved the visitor to the Black’s family dinner.

I can't wait for Nixon's story in book 4.

First I have to say that Lila Felix is one hot smoking writer. From the very first book I read of hers I cannot seem to put them down. Whenever I read one of her books I have to have me time and that means NO ONE better bother me or there will be hell to pay! The kids get take out and their father has to watch them because I start to read and shut the world out around me. Lila has this way that captivates you and keeps you reading and wanting more and more. With the love and skate series this is one series I will read and re-read for years to come. We are introduced to the Black Family and they are the best family anyone could ask for. We met Owen in Love and Skate and then Falcon in How It Rolls and now we meet Maddox oh my Maddox be still my heart.

Maddox Black found out he was not really a Black by accident. He has always known something was wrong with him because he did not like to be touched. He would get the willy's when someone touched him and he never felt whole. So when he found out that his mom and dad are really his aunt and uncle he wants answers. But the only way to get answers he feels is to take off on a road trip and find his father who abandoned him when he was born. So Maddox enlists the help of his cousin Nixon oh Nixon I will get back to him later but Maddox and Nixon go off in the middle of the night in search of his biological father. Maddox does not tell his family what he is doing but he does tell Reed which leaves Reed in a very bad situation with her fiance Falcon.

So Maddox and Nixon set off on their road trip and along the way they stop and met a girl that will forever change Maddox. Remember what I said about Maddox not liking to be touched and keeping himself guarded well he will meet someone who will change all that. When Maddox and Nixon meet Storey all they see is this little petite girl full of life and fire and something in Maddox stirs to life. He has never met someone who has made him feel this way but he knows that there is more to Storey. Storey is a model but she is not your average model that is stuck up and full of herself. No she is down to earth and full of life. She is leery of Maddox because she has been hurt before by guys but when she opens up to Maddox what the two of them find in each other is a rare love that will grip them both and consume them.

Can two broken souls find love? Can Maddox let the past go and move on to a future he deserves? Can Storey open her heart up and let Maddox in? This is a love story that will grip your heart and have you laughing and crying all at the same time. It never ceases to amaze me how Lila can bring those emotions out of me when reading one of her books. And remember I said later on Nixon well I hope to sweet Jesus that Lila does a book about Nixon! Lord I love that boy he is such an amazing character that loves his cousin and is loyal to the end.

Amongst the first three books in this series, this one is by far my favorite. Why? There's just something about Maddox that I find most appealing. Maybe it was the way he supported both Reed and Falcon when they were having their issues in Book 2 or perhaps is his overall demeanor in this story that caught my attention. For an eighteen year old I thought he was mature for his age.

In this story he leaves the only place that he has known as home to seek out his father that abandoned him when he was very young. He decided to do this out of sheer curiosity. He wasn't seeking retaliation for the pain he was caused due to abandonment. He just wanted to meet and get to know his biological father.

As the story moves along it was as if Las Vegas and California beckoned to him. Maybe it was because he was so close to finding his long-lost father... or maybe it was something more. Someone named Storey perhaps.

Maddox stumbles upon her my accident or maybe it was a stroke of FATE. From the first time they meet he showed an impressive amount of chivalry by defending her honor. This immediately caught Storey's attention and the fact that he was drop dead gorgeous. Storey is attractive as well-being that she was a model. What I loved about her was that despite her beauty she was extremely down to earth and never let her stature get to her head.

I loved how their relationship starting with a trusting friendship. Mad has issues that he wasn't willing to discuss with anyone but with Storey it was as if she was the one that held the key. From early on I admired how they were always transparent and open with each other.

What also earned my admiration was how Mad went about dealing with his newly found family. He went above and beyond and made sure that they had what they needed. Even when some situations did not go as planned he never hesitated to offer solace to that one person needing it the most. That is one of the best things that adore about this entire series - how it centers around family.

What I found most impressive about this entire book (the first 3 for that matter) is for a romance it does not contain of any form of sex or physical relations but despite that it did not fail to keep me intriqued and get my heart racing. The author was able to keep it clean which I find extremely rare in the genre.

If you asked me what my favorite part of the book is I would say there were two. I loved the scene that involved the author with her characters in the end. The second part was the outstanding epigraphs before each chapter. Every single one was appropriate and meaningful. As the book went on I found myself wanting to get to the next as soon as I could.

Loved this story and I can't wait to read more about this couple in upcoming books in this series.

I received a copy for review.

Maddox Black has known he’s adopted since he was nine. Sylvia Black is really his aunt. Chase and Sylvia have been taken
care of Maddox since Sylvia’s twin sister, Sela, died. Maddox causes quite a stir when he drags his cousin, Nixon, across the country in search of his dad. The only thing he knows about his dad is that his name is Einer Macon. Maddox doesn’t know but Reed and Falcon decide to postpone their wedding until he comes back home to Louisiana.

Maddox only contacts Reed, which Reed decides not to let the rest of the family know about his whereabouts. This causes friction between Reed and Falcon. Nixon also keeps in touch with Reed without Maddox knowing. Maddox feels bad about what he is putting his family through, but he needs to know about his biological father.

Nixon tries to loosen up Maddox on the road trip. When they both make it to California, Maddox meets Storey at a beach. Maddox has always been seen with different girls, but most people don’t know that anybody that touches him causes him to feel prickly and discomforted. So, Maddox tries to avoid touching Storey at all costs. It will devastate him if she makes him feel the same way. This doesn’t stop him from trying to get to know her. He learns that she models and does a lot of pin-up modeling with classic cars.

The more Maddox gets to know Storey the more he hopes he won’t react the same way with her that he gets with everybody else. Storey has some insecurities as well in their budding relationship because her only boyfriend, Simon, was abusive and didn’t treat her like he loved her. Will they be able to heal each other’s wounds?

I really liked Maddox because I feel like his the most real character in this series. I still like Falcon more though, but I loved reading about Maddox’s story. I was thrilled that there was still alternating points of view and included characters other than Storey and Maddox.

With each book, I think Lila has gotten better at developing the characters. I also feel that Maddox’s and Storey’s relationship as a couple was more drawn out and developed than other characters in this series, which further makes this book more realistic. Storey and Maddox both have problems and are able to find solace in each other. Sometimes Maddox will push Storey away while Storey keeps comparing Maddox to Simon.

As much as I’m looking forward to read about Nixon, I’m more excited to see how Storey and Maddox’s story will continue as a couple.

With each book, I fall more and more in love with these characters and the author who has created them! Seriously, when I read Love and Skate, it was the first book I had read of Lila's, and I thought "wow!", I was in love with Owen and Nellie, I adored Owen's parents (especially his mother) and I thought that it was the best she probably could do, because I loved it so much.

Then I read How it Rolls. I was blown away because it was even better. I still had the characters I had fallen in love with previously, but I got to know Falcon better, and was introduced to Reed. Loved it! Knew Down 'N' Derby was due to come out soon after I finished, and just knew I would like it. I was wrong...

I was blown away. First you get slapped in the face with something you do not see coming from previous books. Albeit hindsight makes a few comments Reed has said in How it Rolls, now play over in your head and you are like "oooh...oookay", but you won't get it until you read it (trust me). Lila takes you to new territory here, but yet leaves you with some of the comfort from the previous two books. Plus you get to know Maddox better, and how can you not love Maddox? *swoon*

What I liked: I liked the element of surprise. It isn't exactly the same as the previous two, although there is comfort in knowing I'm still hearing about my other favorites, I'm getting to know things and seeing different angles and I'm ok with that. I like that we also get to know Nixon a little better, he may not be one of the brothers, but he is just as fabulous as they are! Then there is Storey! If I could look like a fictional character, it would probably be her! She is a pinup girl! Hello!?! I love pinup girls!

What I didn't like: I got nothing. With each book Lila just gets better, and she was good to begin with. I might complain because book 4 isn't ready yet - but well she did just release this one, so I'll hold off complaining about it for a bit, come June though all bets are off!

Would I recommend this book: Seems silly to even put this part here...duh! This is a sweet series, it is for young and old, it doesn't matter your age. It is just the a great story about a family who really love each other and how their love helps heal the ones who are brought in. What can be wrong with that?

Down 'N Derby is the third book from the Love and Skate series, which features the Black brothers. In this book, Maddox decided to run.

While Owen is the brawn, Falcon as the brains, Maddox is the clown. He's got different-colored eyes, which to me is so cat-like and is probably amazing in real life. Maddox has been living with a secret that has been killing him for a very long time. He's always been the one that makes people laugh, but inside he's become very vulnerable. He feels a sting when someone touches him.

Why was Maddox running? What could be so wrong with his family that he's decided to leave without telling them where he would go?

He packed up and left with his cousin, Nixon. Those were my questions when I started reading this book. I didn't read the blurb, that's why I had those questions. I actually thought he was gay. That that was his secret that only Reed knew. Apparently, he found out that he was adopted. He left with Nixon to find his biological father. His mother already passed away. During this road trip, he decided to add another collection to his tattoo, a pinup girl. Him and Nixon found themselves at Venice Beach.

Storey, a petite pinup girl lives in an apartment in Venice Beach. She lives in constant fear that her abusive ex-boyfriend would find her again.

They met by chance at the beach and decided to meet up for dinner with Nixon. While Maddox kept looking for his father in California, him and Storey would meet up and hang out. Maddox found out that he doesn't feel that tingly zap when he touched Storey. They both have issues from the past, but they were able to overcome all their fears of getting close to each other when they found out how different they were from the people that they had been close with before.

By far, Falcon is my favorite Black brother. Even though this is Maddox's book, Falcon and Reed, Owen and Nellie, and the rest of the family, were also part of this story. Falcon was affected by Maddox's leaving, and had to put his life on hold until Maddox came home. Falcon, the selfless brother.

I really love the Black family. It reminds of my own, where everyone is close and loving. I hope all families are like ours, or the Blacks.

This is the third book in the Love and Skate series. It would be possible to follow this story without having read the first two books, but you'd be seriously missing out if you did that! This is Maddox's story; however the other Black siblings and their partners still feature heavily. I love that about this series. I have come to love the Black family, so I truly appreciate how much of a continuing role they all play throughout the series.

There were tears at the beginning of the book and tears at the end -- my tears, not the characters'! Maddox sets off across the country with his cousin Nixon to find his biological father, unbeknownst to the rest of his family. Given the tight knit Black family, this causes heart ache and tears -- this time not just for me.

Even though this was Maddox's turn to tell the story I still love Falcon more than any of the others. Here's an example of why:
"Let me be your resting place. Crawl into my soul and sleep until yours is healed You're mine to shelter. You're mine to protect and I've been slacking off. And wedding or not, in all ways but one, I'm your husband. Start trusting me like I am -- please." 33% eBook

There is a chapter towards the end of the book that has been written from the author's perspective. I LOVE this! I often get the feeling when reading Lila's books that I love her characters a little more than is sane, but her chapter made me feel so much better about myself, while at the same time gave me some insight into her feelings for the Black family.

I have mixed feelings about Nixon's story -- I am assuming he will get a book... I loved Nixon in DND, but I just feel that his story will be heart rending, and well, I'm still feeling fragile after reading DND!

This series has turned me into a HUGE Lila Felix fan! Her writing style is just amazing & so engaging! I would sit down to read and just go from page to page, totally absorbed into the story line. These books are just so easy to get into, and the characters are so quirky and lovable! I absolutely fell in love with each and every member of the Black family. They represent everything a loving family should be. I especially like how you don't lose track of any of the characters through out the series. They are all important & needed in each of the books so it's nice to see them pop up & hear their stories continue.

In Down 'N' Derby Maddox finally gets his chance to shine. He really is the epitome of a southern gentleman! He's always been so quiet and aloof and never really the topic of conversation in the previous two books, so this was a very nice surprise!

Maddox Black is so full of pain it's heartbreaking. He blames himself for his birth mother's death causing him to develop an aversion to being touched. He shies away from relationships and even his own family, thinking he will ruin anything he comes into contact with. After deciding that he needs answers, he takes off with his cousin Nixon on a road trip to track down his father. What he finds along the way is possibly the only person who can heal him, Storey. A pin-up model and derby girl, she's everything he never knew he needed. Their attraction is deep & instantly intense. Together they work through Mad's issues & come to the realization that a happily ever after just may be in the cards for them after all.

Ok people, there are really no words! Nope they all rushed out of my brain as soon as I read Maddox talking! Now I am going to be honest and this book was honestly freaking AMAZING!!! Maddox is such a sexy character with humor and manners. Now I'm not talkin' British dude manners...I'm talkin' good ol' southern manners!! Or something like that!

I really don't usually like books about people running from anything...well except for the Bourne series. So when I read the synopsis I almost didn't read it! *bows head in shame* but good ol' Lila Felix being the darling that she is gave me a little encouragement to read it! Good golly I wish I read it sooner!! Lila Felix is one of the best authors out there!

You're probably thinking...derby? Well, if I weren't a totaly chicken then I would try some derby!!! Of course that will probably never happen.

Now for the book. Maddox (major hottie) wants to find his father so he goes ob this journey! No details! You gotta read it! So he goes on this trip with his cousin Nixon (another cutie... Okay so they're all cuties!!) along the way he finds Storey! And trust me when I say they are sooo romantic!!!!!!!! Just trust me! And that's all I'm gonna say!

So you're probably pissed now because i didnt tell you more! Or not brcause there are dozens of other reviews that are probably better than this one...ok I'm rambling now! Anyways read it! It's good trust me!

~Arc Provided by the Author in exchange for an Honest Review~

Maddox is the youngest of the Black brothers. He is 18 years old and catches all the girls attention with his two different colored eyes. Mad and his cousin Nixon have set out on a cross country road trip to find Maddox's birth father that abandon him at a very young age. While in Las Vegas, Maddox catches the attention of a beautiful pin up girl, Storey, when he defends her honor. The attraction between Maddox and Storey is strong, the kisses and touches Mad shares with Storey are like an addicting and like nothing he has ever felt before. Storey and Maddox both have problems and are able to find solace in each other but sometimes Maddox will push Storey away, while Storey keeps comparing Maddox to her past. Can two broke souls find love and withstand all the trials life throws at them?

Down N Derby was such a delightful addition to the series, we still have Falcon, Owen and their significant others very much present on and of throughout the book, which is a big plus! Lila has created a cast that you can not help but fall in love with and relate to, the Black's are so welcoming and loving. I love at the beginning of every chapter, how Lila starts it off with a random thought, some being funny, witty and some being serious. If you have not read this series yet... then what are you waiting for? You will not be disappointed. The first book in the series is Love and Skate, followed by How it Rolls.

Another good read in the Love and Skate series. I really enjoyed this continuation in the series and getting to know Maddox and Storey. They were awesome characters and I loved getting to know them while keeping tabs on Falcon and Reed's story at the same time. I think I liked this book a bit better than the second one just because there was a lot more going on besides the main love story. The book was keeping tabs on Reed, Falcon, Nixon, Nellie and Owen as well as telling Storey and Maddox's story.
Storey and Maddox's love story was as sweet as expected but the thing I loved about it the most was that they both came from the same place yet found each other when they were both running away from things at home. I also found the whole 'no-touchy' thing Maddox had going on for a while interesting but I didn't see how he could have possibly hidden that from his family all those years. I was wondering if there was going to be some contact with Storey's family or her jerk of an ex-boyfriend but nothing really came up in this story even though in the beginning of the book it looked like Storey was still being hassled by him - perhaps that will be dealt with as an aside in the next book? I liked how htis book had a few small asides about Nixon and they've got me excited to read his story next.
I'd recommend picking up this series if you're looking for some sweet young-adult love stories that are fun, easy to read and have memorable characters.

Lila Felix I have a bone to pick with you!!!! How can you end it that way and leave me hanging?!?! I'm in pain! I feel almost as though I have lost a limb. A vital part of myself!!
Well I absolutely LOVED this chapter in the Derby series it was just to darn short and I am ready to throw a tantrum like a 2 year because I want, no NEED the rest of Nixon's story right now!!
I am so blessed to have the opportunity to read and review these stories. If you as a reader haven't started on the Love & Skate series I strongly advise you do. They are sweet and charmingly beautiful stories of love. Plain and simple. Love. Yes while these characters which I have had the extreme pleasure of getting to know struggle with there lives and relationships there really is no drama and that's one of the greatest things about this series. The lack of drama is a breathe of fresh air and I absolutely love and care for each character as if I myself were a part of them.
Maddox & Storey are the cutest couple and I was thoroughly immersed and invested in the out come. When I couldn't turn the page anymore I groaned and wanted to weep! It just wasnt enough!!!
At the end we get a one year later view which was awesome! Thoroughly loved that part.
Now do yourself a favor, go get this series and read it! You will not regret it!
