In the span of a blink everything can change.......

Katrine only ever had thoughts of a normal life. As was custom, she would learn the ways of being a woman from her mother, Anastasia, so she could be a good wife and mother.
One day, in the fall of 1610, Katrine is innocently sent out into their village to collect some flour, setting in motion a chain of events that would turn her world upside down.
Tearing her away from her mother, three witches bring forth Katrine's true nature and uncover a secret hidden from her family for generations. Discovering she descends from a bloodline steeped in intrigue, Katrine fights to survive the deadly urges handed down from her Grandmother, Countess Elizabeth (Erzsebet) Bathory.

I decided when I was six that I wanted to be a writer and I've been working my way towards that goal ever since. When I was young I would rework books that I'd read, writing myself in as a character and changing around details to make it my own.
I remember walking into a bookstore as a kid with my parents, I'd always had a thing for books but this particular time I remember seeing the name 'Stephen King' on a lot of shelves. At the time, which was the late 80's early 90's he did not take up as much real estate as he does now but it was clear he was important, it was also a name my parents read. I remember seeing the name and knowing that I wanted to be like this ' Stephen King' and made up my mind. At school, when teachers asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said Stephen King.
I studied Novel Writing at George Brown College where I was able to fine tune my craft, learning how to properly shape a novel and about specific genres like mystery and romance.

I am constantly trying to grow and improve as a writer, and I hope to be always learning and evolving as I grow.

I don’t really like reading historical fiction, it’s not that I don’t like the genre; it’s because I usually wind up spending a good deal of time trying to find and then reading about the history that the book I’m about to read/review has been based on.

The only real person in this story is Elizabeth Bathory who is often compared to Vlad III the Impaler of Wallachia, the individual that is the basis for Count Dracula. This caused her to be nicknamed The Blood Countess and Countess Dracula.

Katrine, the female protagonist in this book has no idea of her actual lineage, especially about Elizabeth, her grandmother; that is until three witches take her and her “mother” to her real family. The woman who she has always thought has been her mother is actually a maid for the Bathory family, who had been paid for take care of her, since Katrine had been an illegitimate child.

The spell Katrine’s mother, Anastasia was trying to do when wrong, turning Anastasia into a beast. Known as a werewolf. This left Katrine to continue to her grandmother’s home with one of the three witches, but arriving there she finds that Elizabeth has been placed under house arrest.

Luckily Katrine is able to meet up with others who can understand the changes she’s going through and try to make her feel comfortable is getting to know her new situation and feelings. As can be expected in circumstances like this, usually there has to be some sort of an ultimate confrontation, which is the case here.

For having given me a historical fiction reading experience fraught with elements of magic, paranormal, vampire and witches; I’m giving Ms. Maurice 5 STARS for her endeavor here.

I’ve received a Mobi.file copy of this book from the author through an internet giveaway she had, and the above has been my honest opinion.

Rebirth by Ravin Tija Maurice is a story of a young girl's life forever changed by her mother's past. A past she knew nothing about until the witches came to their home and took them. Katrine finds herself on a journey to meet her grandmother.
She finds out she is a Bathory, a well known name that is respected. On the way there Katrine loses her mother in a way she can't explain. Strange things start happening to Katrine. It seems she is always left with more questions than answers. She ends up in Vienna and meets Mademoiselle Delphine and Signor Amori. They convince her to come with them to Paris, where she will be welcomed and maybe find some answers. Katrine's journey is just beginning.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I was impressed at how amazing the story was. Once I started reading I was transported into a different time and place. I often lost track of time while reading but that's not a bad thing. This book was truly an enjoyable read! The author did an amazing job with the characters. I do have my favorites! I look forward to reading the next book. I must know what's going on in Katrine's life! I give this 5 stars

What a delightful story! I loved the supernatural elements of the story! Witches, magic, vamps, and shifters! Set in the 1500s in Hungary, this story is sure to entertain.

Beautifully written and filled to the brim with "oh" "ah" and "wow" factor, you will want to read this story again and again!

Four stars!

The story is set back in historical times. An illegitimate child is born into the famed and royal Bathory family and whisked away by one of the maids, who was paid to raise her. On her deathbed the maid finally tells the girl who she really is, this begins the tale. Anastasia has a husband, wife daughter of her own now, as well as a secret "affliction". 3 witches show up to take her back to her real family and her daughter (Katrine) as well. Going with them to protect her husband and son soon turns into a nightmare for Anastasia and Katrine. During a ritual performed by the witches , Anastasia tries a spell of her own and it backfires, turning her into a beast. She scratches Katrine and thus begins the adventure. Traveling with the remaining witch, Roza, they try to make their way back to her family. Along the way, Katrine begins to change, her personality is more forceful and she has strange urges, not to mention seeing and feeling her mother. Finding her grandmother arrested for the murders of her servants, she has no place to go. Finally taken in by strangers that recognize her affliction, she begins a new and wonderful journey. Finally with people that understand her and can help her understand herself, she settles in. Dealing with others that have similar "afflictions" isn't easy and can be deadly. Jealousy, adoration, need, love, betrayal, family, all come into play during this book, along with a bit of history. And then in the end, the ultimate standoff. Having read this book, I am quite sure there will be a sequel. I am not normally a fan of historical fiction, whether it is paranormal or not, however, this book kind of reminded me of the old Anne Rice vampire books. Just the feel of it was familiar to me. I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of witches, magic, vampires, shifters, etc. and the way they were introduced into the story. It was really original and definitely worth reading. I will be waiting for the next book to see what happens for Katrine next.

Rebirth is Urban Fantasy with Characters That Had Been Real - Should the Urban Be 1584

This could be historical fiction. Could be, even may have been if the stories are true. If you believe in monsters and believe the stories of horror then The Afflicted are for you. Ravin T Maurice has taken tales of the macabre, historical figures whose legend may be larger as The centuries pass and created a world of family where lineage may be worn as a badge of honor to be respected or hidden as a scarlet letter.
Her take begins in 1584 or so with a servant girl being called upon to be a midwife to a noble. What's that like? Don't raise your eyes, don't look at who is in the room, don't look at who is giving birth! A blind protects the identity. Now imagine the midwife is now tasked to raise this child as her own paid more than she'd earn in two life times and told to leave the country, never speak of this and never return.
Now imagine the people involved drink blood or change shape and may have been responsible for killing over 600 girls in the village after employing them. Now imagine there is a historical person who was accused of at least one of those three things. Read on and know this takes place during the time of Count Vlad who is also related. Read on and know Elizabeth Báthory was a real person born in 1560. Ravin had built world's with personality and verve.

I want to preface this by stating I do not usually read historical anything. However, the idea of Bathory bloodline intrigued me. While the story spanned over time and seemed to lull in places, the overall aesthetic was pleasing and kept my attention. For those who love history, especially vampire lore, you'll dig this take on the Bathory legend.

Rebirth by Ravin Tija Maurice is a YA Paranormal story set in the early 17th century. In this historic fiction, the only true historic figure is Elizabeth Bathory, however, there are references to Vlad III the Impaler of Wallachia.

Ms. Maurice has written an exciting tale filled with all sorts of paranormal characters. Her descriptive writing paints a rich picture of the various settings as the characters travel throughout Europe. I could picture each creepy forest, beautiful gown and aristocratic court. The detail of the story does slow the pace a bit, but Rebirth is so action-packed that the plot didn’t drag.

The lineage and history of the main character, Katrine, is fully explored and explained. Katrine’s transformation through the story is parallel to the changes and growth every young adult experiences—her changes just happen to be paranormal in nature. Like any young adult, Katrine must figure her way through crushes, first kisses, misdirection, malice and the rest of adulthood while experiencing all sorts of body changes and emotions.

Rebirth is filled with magic, vampires, werewolves, witches and witch hunts. It also features accepting communities of paranormal creatures in which a young girl can find her way to adulthood.
