The First Two by Adrian Mallabo is a futuristic zombie thriller set in the year 2361, as a global epidemic has annihilated the human race and left only small communities remaining to seek a cure and reverse the catastrophic trend. Professor Florentine Mena has developed a miracle cure, his formula ZF-93 able to counter the effects of the virus with its regenerative properties. The first two experimental subjects, Adam and Amanda, have `returned' to become essential contributors to the survivalist encampment of New Edmonton. Only there are subtle discrepancies that become noticeable as they slowly regain memory of their previous lives. The protectors of the citadel, Sparrow Company, are faced with discerning the difference between Adam and Amanda's recovery and address the potential threat before it is too late.

The author provides us with a solid backdrop as he develops the relationship between the protagonists in the story. Sgt. Thomas Black is the hardcore trooper on the team, dedicated to eliminating threats to the community with little regard for his own safety. Isaac Tennant acts as his foil, the rookie on the team whose entire life experience centers on the battle for survival. Danny Keene and Jenny Kenyon develop a romantic attraction, and Danny's initial prejudice towards Adam suggests his distrust of someone who can possibly go into remission and kill any of the few humans clinging to their natural life.

The subplot focusing on Adam and Amanda is what creates the major conflict in Mallabo's tale. Adam remembers his life as Jack, whose wife Gillian and son Clark were separated from him in the disaster. Amanda also begins to remember her life as Megan, which opens a door to a closet full of dark and sinister memories. It anticipates the climatic resolution in the novel as Professor Mena himself becomes infected by the virus, and Adam is faced with the dilemma of `turning' Florentine---but into someone like himself, or possibly like Amanda?

This is a well-balanced suspense tale which doesn't rely on blood and gore to make the storyline work. Rather we are drawn into the battle of good and evil inside the minds of Adam and Amanda, though Sparrow Company never allows the pace to slacken at any point. We are also entertained by Professor Mena's race against time as science struggles to offset the plague that threatens to make the human species extinct. For horror fans, sci-fi buffs, or readers looking for a quick-moving adventure novel, The First Two by Adrian Mallabo is waiting for you.
