Dirty Rocker Boys

Rate this book
An uncensored Hollywood tell-all filled with explicit tales of love, sex, and revenge from the video vixen made famous by Warrant’s rock anthem “Cherry Pie.”Who could forget the sexy “Cherry Pie” girl from hair metal band Warrant’s infamous music video? Bobbie Brown became a bona fide vixen for her playful role as the object of lead singer Jani Lane’s desires. But the wide-eyed Louisiana beauty queen’s own dreams of making it big in Los Angeles were about to be derailed by her rock-and-roll lifestyle. After her tumultuous marriage to Jani imploded, and her engagement to fast-living Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee ended in a drug haze—followed by his marriage later to Pamela Anderson—Bobbie decided it was time Hollywood’s hottest bachelors got a taste of their own medicine. Step get high. Step get even. In a captivating, completely uncensored confessional, Bobbie explicitly recounts a life among some of the most famous men in Leonardo DiCaprio, Kevin Costner, Mark McGrath, Dave Navarro, Sebastian Bach, Ashley Hamilton, Rob Pilatus of Milli Vanilli, Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, Orgy’s Jay Gordon, and many more. No man was off limits as the fun-loving bombshell spiraled into excess, anger, and addiction. Bobbie survived the party—barely—and her riveting, cautionary comeback tale is filled with the wildest stories of sex, drugs, and rock and roll ever told.

The first time I saw Warrant's Cherry Pie as a kid made me not only a fan of the band, but also a fan of Bobbie Brown (and coincidentally cherry pie, as in the food). In my mind she was living the dream and I wanted to be just like her.

This book shows that it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, so many dark things went on behind the scenes.

I appreciate the fact that Bobbie named EVERYBODY, whether they were good or bad and it gave me a new perspective on some of them (I will never be looking at Leonardo DiCaprio the same way ever again).

I can't wait to get to book two, this one I listened to on Audible (which was read by Bobbie herself) and that one I'll probably read as an ebook.

Wow. Just wow!!!

I've read a few rock 'n roll bios and there is nothing more brutally honest when someone can talk about how great the music scene and then talk about about how great the drugs were...up until the social taking turns into full blown addiction. This was a brutally honest tale of how great the Sunset strip was in the late 80s/early 90s to the metal/glam hair bands and then how it all came crushing down. Bobbie was a full part of that, but from the other side. No, she wasn't in a band, but she was married to one and engaged to another (not to mention and met and hung out with god knows how many). She had to deal with the infidelity, the alcoholism and the "how do I pump up his ego" with all of these rockers. She's met and pissed off half of Hollywood, made a ton of money and lost it all to drugs... more than once.

Bobbie didn't hold anything back in her story even if it made her look bad. She fell from grace with cocaine only to lose again years later to meth. She made a lot of friends along the way and lost just as many or pissed them off. She's honest about all of her relationships and how her insecurities, along with her self entitlement made her make horrible life long decisions. A total self sabatouer in her relationships, Bobbie has finally come full circle and figured out her issues.

This is a must read for anyone who was a major fan of the 80s glam rock bands. It was utterly nostalgic and just a damn great read.

Who wouldn't want to read this? Bobbie Brown started her public life with a record number of wins on Star Search, soon became a sought-after model, became a video vixen for 80s hair bands, married and divorced the lead singer of Warrant, was engaged to Tommy Lee, dated many other famous people, fell into drugs, self-sabotaged her career and her life, and eventually sobered up.

This memoir takes the reader through all of those things. Bobbie is honest and raw. She names names. She lays it all out there (and I mean ALL). I finished it wondering how the heck some of these people are even still alive.

It isn't great literature, but it isn't supposed to be. I enjoyed it immensely.

She's on drugs and uber slutty, rock stars are drugged out cheaters, Tommy Lee has a big penis, & Leonardo DiCaprio is bad in bed. There. Now you don't need to read it. If you are/were a fan of the hair bands, you might enjoy the little tidbits dropped here and there about various groups.

Anyone who grew up in the 80s remembers the first time they saw the "Cherry Pie" video starring the absolutely gorgeous Bobbie Brown. I always wished I'd had the guts to move to L.A. when glam rock was It and all of the guys were hot, sleazy musicians with long hair. Bobbie did it. I loved living vicariously through her as she dated Tommy Lee, one of my first crushes. She doesn't hold anything back. You laugh and you cringe on the same page. This woman has been through a lot and admits she's not perfect. On a personal note, I emailed her a few years ago on My Space and she not only wrote back to me, but sent me a friend request. She'd mentioned in her profile she has ADD--I do too, and asked her what kind of medications worked for her and what didn't. She was very sweet and replied to every email I sent to her. I wish nothing but the best for her. She's been through a lot, but she can't ever say her life was boring. Thanks for providing this 80s girl with some interesting stories--I'm still having nightmares about Gunnar Nelson! Hope there's a sequel :)

A quick, fast read. Perfect for fans of the hard rock, hair metal bands of the late 1980's and 1990's. Bobbie Brown leaves her small town and moves to Hollywood to pursue a career in modeling. She does some shoots and a few music videos before starring in Warrants Cherry Pie video! Her and frontman Jani Lane begin dating and a few months later she becomes pregnant with their daughter and they tie the knot! After the birth of their daughter, things begin to go downhill. Jani's drinking all the time, Bobbie is sneaking around doing coke and meth. They eventually break-up and Bobbie begins dating Tommy Lee, drummer from Motley Crue. They have a turbulent, crazy relationship. After her and Tommy break-up and he marries Pamela Anderson FOUR DAYS LATER, Bobbie goes on a methed out, sex-filled downward spiral. Tales of depravity and a whos who of the music scene. This was a good read and a great glimpse into many musicians I idolized as a teen!

It's exactly what you might expect...coked out (and later methed out) 80's video tramp blames her shortcomings on everyone else. The encounters with Hollywood actors and musicians are entertaining though.

Probably interesting to anyone who knew much about the hair metal scene in the 1980s or who likes the music of such bands. I enjoyed it more than I expected really. I thought it was hilarious in many places, and actually quite touching at the end.

Takeaway: Leonardo DiCaprio is extremely well-endowed, even more so than Tommy Lee. Mark McGrath, not so much. And Dave Navarro is insane.

I grew up listening to rock and hair bands in the 80s, thanks to my dad. He was a big fan of the music but just as big a fan of the hot video vixens, women like Tawny Kitaen and Bobbie Brown.

The first time I saw the video for Warrant's "Cherry Pie" I was mesmerized and it had nothing to do with Jani Lane or the rest of the guys. I saw Bobbie Brown and thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world. When I read she came out with a book I knew I had to pick it up. I'm so glad I did!

This book is every bit as juicy as I thought it'd be and I ate up every word. It revealed many things about the rock stars we've all come to know and love (or hate). Bobbie's world was a fun but also sad world. I loved that she put it all out, the good, the bad, and the really bad. Everything from her lavish, fun life of dancing, partying and dating rock stars to her drug addictions and addiction to men. As fans we tend to glamorize their lives, not knowing just how messed up things could be.

I still think Bobbie is awesome and after reading the book it made me want to root for her to find real success and real love. I hope she does.

I'm embarrassed to even flag I read this. Here is a woman who survives cervical cancer and has a child and all she wants to write about is how much all the guys wanted to sleep with her and those she did in gross detail. Ugh

MY THOUGHTS: Unfiltered doesn't even begin to describe Bobbie's mouth. She's blunt and doesn't hold back much and is hilarious. The memoir flowed nicely and I really didn't want to put it down. It was a quick read, 264 pages, but it's not for everyone because of her coarse language.

Bobbie Jean Brown came from an abusive home (her father Bobby, for whom she's named after, was a wife beater, as was his father) but wasn't abused herself. She went on to be in countless dysfunctional, sometimes abusive relationships (Tommy Lee, who grabbed her by the throat in front of people). She's been on drugs most of her adult life and I don't think she's ever been to rehab. She never mentioned wanting to go. She never mentioned how she felt seeing the abuse then or how she feels about it now and if she thinks it may have to contributed to her drug use.

She detailed some of her sexual exploits with many men. The most memorable one was with Leonardo DiCaprio in 1996. He had her perform oral sex on him while wearing a condom. It tasted bad so she took it off. She said his penis was huge, 'on steroids', bigger than Tommy Lee's, and she could hardly fit it in her mouth. She said Tommy's was 'as big as a baby's arm'. Tommy's very immature, a big kid, needy, extremely jealous, and a big whoremonger. I think he's the one she said always wanted to help remove her tampon.

She barely mentioned having a nose job at around age 19/20 'to remove the bump' and getting breast implants and having them redone. Never once mentioned that they leaked and she got really sick and has lupus now because of it (according to her). A few years ago I watched a documentary that she narrated on VH1 called "Do It For the Band: The Women of the Sunset Strip" and she mentioned the leakage. She failed to mention being diagnosed with trichotillomania yet mentions it in interviews. I found out about it online when I should have just read about it in her own book. That developed during 2005 during what she says is the worst relationship she's ever been in but I don't recall reading about it and I don't know who's she's talking about. How on earth can you write your memoir and leave out the most important things of all?! You can't have surgeries and barely mention them. I want details. I want to know why you had the surgeries, what it was like recovering from them and all that. What lead to wanting them? Any regrets?

The most interesting story was when her ex-husband Jani (Warrant), a crying, drunken mess at the time, confided in her about something awful that happened to him years before he was famous. Page 250:

He was nineteen when it happened. It was after a show. And older man, a major rock star, had invited Jani to hang out with him and the big guys. Jani was young, and easily impressed. Later that night, along with an accomplice, that major rock star put Jani through an ordeal he had been to ashamed to talk about until this moment. It was violent. It was ugly. It was exploitative. Jani said he had been too scared to tell anybody and had been pushing the memory under the carpet, pretending it wasn't there. Jani was a proud man and hated to think of himself as a victim. Now, finally, I understood why he had been acting like one for so many years.'

Bobbie did a lot of acting/modeling when she was in her early twenties, and some things since, so this book should have had a filmography.

Some of the music videos she's been in aren't mentioned online so I'll list them all:

I'm On To You by Hurricane- 1988 (pre-implants and nose job)
Cecilia by Times Two- 1989
Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Great White- 1989
House of Broken Love by Great White- 1989
It Feels So Good To Love Someone Like You by Terence Trent D'Arby- 1989
Sittin' in the Lap of Luxury by Louie Louie- 1990
Cherry Pie by Warrant- 1990

She misspoke and said model Paulina Porizkova was Czech-American when she's actually Czech-Swedish.

Here's a great interview with Screamer Magazine and one with Fuse television she did to promote the book.

I loved the book, thought it was highly entertaining and I do recommend it.

I received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

There’s so many different things I can say here, I’m not sure what direction I want to go in. I can’t even decide if I want to change the two stars to three. At times I find her rude, crude, and loathsome—look, man, I’m not interested in dick stats. And the amount of focus on that, who fn cares?? Nasty. She was obnoxious, self-serving, and with an attitude I’d just blow right past that sh*t, ugh. Like, who comes out and says, “I’m beautiful”? Full of yourself much? And then later says she didn’t even realize she was pretty?? I feel bad for some of the things she’s been through, and the betrayals, a lot unfortunate stuff. But she’s a very hard person to feel sorry for, and I don’t. It’s just not there. She knowingly and willingly put herself in most of those situations. Why do we punish ourselves? It’s bad. It’s sad. It’s soul crushing. Bobbie Brown is a very sensitive person for someone who herself could be so abusive. Yet she did cling on to some morals, and that’s to her credit. Also, it’s very clear how much she loves her family. So freaking off-putting is the way she talks just the same raunchy, crude way most of the slimy guys in her life do—hey, I love my rock stars, I absolutely do. But that sh*t? I don’t need to hear it. “Shut up and play!”

I borrowed this book from a neighbour (a millennial) who thought I might like it because she knew that when I was in my teens, I was a rocker chick myself. Thing is, I was an Anthrax/Metallica/Iron Maiden type of rocker chick. I wasn't into hair-metal bands. How do you explain to someone that back then, there were heavy-metal factions, and one was usually fiercely loyal to their particular genre. But, to be polite, I accepted it since she offered it.

The cover had pink dried-liquid splotches on it, and the pages smelled like candy. While reading, I'm constantly smelling something like a strawberry iced cupcake. With sprinkles. Likely multi-coloured, cylinder sprinkles. Some of the juice had seeped into the book and dried, blotching some of the drug use and drunken stupors with pink stains.

Of all the books in the world, in an odd way, it enhanced my overall book experience. Here I am reading about someone who basically didn't mentally mature past the age of 16, whose goals were to look cute in rock videos and sleep with guys who happened to land recording contracts - while the book looked and smelled like birthday cake. Bobbie's book. Not anyone else's. What are the chances?

Imagine if you will: Dave Mustaine's book. Spritz the pages with some beer to put you in the right mood. How about Anthony Bourdain's book? You could smear the pages with bearnaise sauce. Debbie Travis? The smell and smudges of paint. (But it has to be a trendy colour like turquoise.) Nikki Sixx? Jack Daniels and Aqua Net. Keith Richards? Cigarette smoke, of course. Heck, even put a few cigarette burns on the pages too. But Bobbie Brown's cupcake book pretty much summed up what I think of bubble-gum metal guys and the girls who loved them.

I read it in two consecutive days. Each sitting was about 2-3 hours worth of work. I had to go back and make sure I read it right: Yes, Leonardo DiCaprio was the only guy who insisted on wearing a condom, making him the smartest person in the book. Once finished, I returned it to my neighbour, thanked her, and when she asked how I liked it, I lied. "It was good," I said, simply trying to be nice. "Oh good!" she smiled. "I've got Pamela Des Barres' book too. I'll lend you that one since you seem to like these types of books!"

She handed me I'm With The Band. It smelled like peanut butter cookies. I can't even make this up.

Bobbie Brown is an iconic video vixen most noted for playing the lead in Warrant's "Cherry Pie".
description
Many don't know she also married Jani Lane, the lead singer, not long after meeting on the set of it. She followed that up with an engagement to Tommy Lee later. This book details the highs and lows of the 80's hair metal scene.

The Good:
1. Bobbie's way of telling the story gets the reader sucked with her charm and honesty. She comes off very likable.

2. It fills in the missing story gaps not covered on her show "Ex-wives Of Rock."

3. The tea is hot, practically scalding! Most will be shocked by the revelations revealed at the end.

4. Video might have killed the radio star, but Grunge killed the rock star. She was there during that time, and offers a peak at the fallout of those personally involved.

The Bad:
1. I still have some questions she didn't answer. She goes a little into her "Star Search" experience, but not enough. Did she have any catty moments with her competition? How was Ed McMahon in real life? Did any of the judges hit on her? We get nada.

Final Thoughts:
This was a fun, and easy read. I laughed out loud at certain parts, and wanted to travel through time to slap a few people too.

Here is a clear cautionary tale of why you don't go to Hollywood or anywhere is life without making a clear plan. All this chick does is use drugs get herself into a bad situation then blames everything else for the results rather than taking accountability and responsibility. the only thing this washed up train wreck has now is selling her stories of Hollywood and whatever interaction she has had with celebrities and rock stars whom view her as a pathetic hanger-on. Don't waste your time.

I was very young when Warrant's "Cherry Pie" was a hit, with its video constantly rotating on MTV. Even though I was just a kid, it was clear who the star was of the (very popular) music video: the blonde bombshell with cherry red lips, Bobbie Brown. Bobbie OWNED that video, and as well as MTV back in that day, too.

I grew up listening to Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Guns 'N Roses, glam metal, and metal in general. It was romantic, at least, for a fangirl kid in the 80's, to fall in love with Bobbie and Jani and their love story. In hindsight, I remember thinking it was all kind of sad, that Bobbie and Jani didn't work out. With their angelic manes and faces, they seemed to be the perfect couple. As a fan with so many questions, I found the book to be a great read. How refreshing it is, to read a woman's account of that time on the Sunset Strip. Short as it was, I especially loved the little bit on Sebastian Bach in particular. "Dirty Rocker Boys" is definitely a great page-turner. This book is highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of 80's rock and wants to read a woman's perspective. I hope Bobbie writes another book!

Read this in one sitting and loved it!!! When Cherry Pie first came out I remember thinking holy shit this woman is the epitome of beauty and why the hell do I NOT look like her? lol Even though my current bf at the time said we look like twins hehe bless his soul. I always thought she was better than Pam Anderson who always seems to have a perpetual bitch face going on or else a phony smile. Yes Pam was beautiful but very much knew it and that made her unattractive to me. Back in the day we didn't have internet or the like to keep up with celebs like we do these days unless you bought a few music magazines here and there. So when I finally came across Bobbie Brown's book I pre-ordered i instantly and couldn't wait to read it and it wasn't a disappointment. To those of the people being negative I hope you are all saints because at least she has the balls to put it all out there!!! Hold your head up Bobbie you are still a gorgeous babe oh and I always wanted you to join Baywatch, I was disappointed when they chose Gena Lee Nolin over you!!!!!

I recall as a kid seeing Bobbie Brown first on Star Search and then later in Warrant's Cherry Pie video. I always thought she was very pretty. I also watched her and the other Ex Wives of Rock, on their reality show. After reading the book, Dirty Rocker Boys, I was astonished at just how egotistical, self-loving, self-serving she was and is. She bashes Jani Lane in a large percentage of the book about his addiction yet seems to brag about her own. Knowing she had a toddler that grew up during the time of her massive drug use and sleeping with what seems like all of Hollywood, is truly sad. After reading this book I have not an ounce of respect for her.

Dirty Rocker Boys is a warts and all memoir by the former model, Bobbie Brown. It tells the story of Bobbie’s life, beginning with her birth in 1969 until about 2013. Bobby Jean’s foray into the world of show business began with her winning the Miss Louisiana Teen USA pageant in 1987. She would go on to represent Louisiana in the Miss Teen USA pageant that same year. Her appearance in that pageant would open the door to getting work as a commercial model (she was not the high fashion type). Bobbie’s California girl good looks would soon lead to appearances in rock videos and bit parts in the popular television show, Married with Children. Bobbie also won the spokesmodel competition on the show Star Search a record thirteen times.

At first, modeling came easily for Bobbie. She didn’t have to try too hard. Her beauty was her foot in the door. But life happens. Human beings aren’t perfect. She had some dysfunctional relationships with various men. Then she started dating the musician, Jani Lane, from the 1980s rock band, Warrant. After dating for just a few months, Bobbie discovers she’s pregnant (after being told that she may never be able to have children), and she and Lane marry a few months later. Their marriage only lasted about two years.

Sometime after her divorce, Bobbie then began dating Tommy Lee from Motley Crue. That relationship was also a tumultuous one. After their breakup in 1995, Tommy married the actress Pamela Anderson, and Bobbie’s life would begin to spiral out of control. She was already using drugs (she admitted to using them to stay slim for modeling work), and her habit worsened after her breakup with Tommy. Her addiction lasted for about a decade, with Bobbie finally sobering up in the 2000s. I don't believe Bobbie has ever gotten over Tommy dumping her for Pam. It's quite clear from listening to her audiobook that Bobbie knew that she was very pretty and she was used to being pursued by many wealthy and desirable men. Tommy's mistreatment and rejection of her was huge blow to her huge ego.

I listened to Bobbie’s book on Audible and enjoyed it overall. The only things that I didn’t care for at times were her use of profanity and her graphic descriptions of sex, but that’s just me. I can tell that she and I have very different personalities. Bobbie is very confident. It seems as if she was a woman who loved to socialize and PARTY. I have always been very shy and introverted. I didn't know who Bobbie was until her book came out, and I only remember her from the Cherry Pie video (which I probably only saw twice in my life). I never watched the show Star Search. If I had known about her, I probably would have envied the life she led back then, but years later and after having listened to her audiobooks, I can tell you that I do NOT envy her at all. She is narcissistic and a bit shallow. She is in love with her younger self. I don't envy the drugs and all of the sexual encounters she's had with various male celebrities. I truly believe that very few male celebrities (rock stars and movie stars) are ever faithful to one woman for life. They can have their pick of any women they want, and there's just far too much temptation out there. I can see now on looking back that the kind of life that Bobbie chose to pursue is full of a lot of highs and lows...but mostly lows (heartache). She gave up her child to her mother so that she could pursue a career in modeling and/or show business and possibly marriage to a wealthy man. I think she missed out on raising her daughter, and she can't get those precious years back.

I do appreciate Bobbie sharing her life story with us. Many of us who aren’t in show business and who see people like Bobbie Brown and Pamela Anderson assume that everyone loves them and that they have perfect lives. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. I’m not going to get into their personal lives, but let’s just say that they are human beings, and they’ve had their share of problems—just like everyone else. I will say that despite both women looking very similar, it seems that Bobbie and Pamela have different personalities and a different work ethic. But I am sure that both have always had their own insecurities. The same goes for the men in their lives.

As Bobbie Brown once said, she is the epitome of the small-town girl who made it big in Hollywood cliche. Initially, success came very fast for her, but her potential was squandered by bad decisions, bad relationships, and drug use. I would think that the shelf-life for most models is a relatively short one. By her own admission, Bobbie’s main ambition was to be a model and actress, and she had nothing else to fall back on—except the expectation that one day she would marry a wealthy man who would take care of her for the rest of her life. Sadly, I think many women have the same ambitions that Bobbie once had.

In Bobbie’s book, she talks about how she had a crush on Tommy Lee since her teen years, and how she would find out years later that both Tommy Lee and Jani Lane had seen her on Star Search (before she ever met them) and talked about who would get to have sex with her first. It was sad to hear about Bobbie’s failed relationship with Jani, his depression, and his tragic demise. The baby daughter that they shared was/is truly a gift. It was also disheartening to learn about Bobbie’s dysfunctional relationship with Tommy and his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality. It sounds like he was love bombing her in the beginning, but I personally believe that he had his sights set on Pamela for some time.
But the saddest thing by far is the fact that Bobbie and Jani’s daughter had to be exposed to all of this dysfunction.

Bobbie described herself in one of her two books as being the "hottest girl on the Sunset Strip" (for about minute as she said). I would agree with that. She was definitely a good-looking woman who stood out, but there's an abundance of physical beauty in the world, and newer, younger women are always coming along. There's an endless supply of them. The kind of attention that she experienced from men is a fleeting thing. It seems to happen when young women are in their mid teens to mid twenties, and after that the attention seems to fade (quickly for some women and gradually for others). I think that's just life. It happens. No one stays young forever. Even men who were once considered desirable get older and experience rejection.

Bedding down beautiful, young models seems to be a competition between male celebrities. Remember that first Austin Powers movie in which Austin describes Allota Fagina as "the village bicycle" and that "everyone has had a turn"? That's how women like Bobbie are treated by these men. They go from one male celebrity to the next and then the next and so on—with none of these men ever committing to them (as in marriage). The men just see these women as playthings...another notch in their belt buckles. This is something that I definitely do not envy and I would not want my own daughter to lead this kind of lifestyle. My advice is to find a real career, make your own money, find a good man, and hold on to that good man. THAT is the way to true happiness.

At least Bobbie was able to tell her story in a book and make some money from doing that. I guess one could say that she paid her dues big time.

This was a fun, interesting romp through the 90s era of hair rock, but it was also a compelling tale of a woman who is unapologetic in who she is - the good and the bad. It was entertaining to read about her exploits with various celebrities (I confess I was a big fan of Nelson in my pre-teen years, so her stories about them especially made me chuckle.. and cringe), but it was the openness about Bobbie as a human that I really appreciated.

People are all too often unable to admit their mistakes, but Bobbie owns hers. She recognizes the moments she took the wrong path, and that is perhaps my favorite thing about her. She is a real, complex human being, with flaws and all. She knew she was an addict, and she didn't try to cover it up with PC BS. She did not write this book to inspire young women. She wrote this book to tell her story, and her story isn't perfect. I love that. I am so bored by people who want to portray their problem as inspiration. Sometimes life is just a mess.

It helps that she is also hilarious, and she tells her tales well. I heard she was writing a sequel. I'd read that.
