Weirder Than Weird

Rate this book
If you love quirky and macabre short stories but have become discouraged over the lack of originality these days then this book will renew your faith! Here are 18 bizarre tales that Rod Serling himself would feel right at home with. "Weirder Than Weird" is assured to keep the reader captivated on those cold winter nights when all you want to do is to curl up with a good book and let your mind run wild.

Imagine, if you will, the worst case scenario for a woman who holds the deepest and darkest of secrets. She tries to keep this ignominious shame from her psychologist but he knows her secret all too well and she ends up paying the ultimate price for her indiscretions. Or... consider poor Keith Tuttle, a young man who unwittingly becomes part of a horrifying tale that damns him for all eternity but strangely enough, someone close to him unexpectedly profits from his doom. Another story called "Arrival Time" will allow you to peer into the life of a solitary man traveling through space and what he has come to rely on in order to keep his sanity. Will he lose it? Stand by...

"Weirder Than Weird" is chock full of the most unusual tales that you will ever read. Can you hear the whistle blowing? The train is about to leave the station. Next stop: Macabre-Ville, Humor Heights and Whacky Wherever. The only question now is... Will you be on board?

Good collection of short horror stories. Some I found better than others but overall an impressive collection.

Before you start reading, the author tells you that these stories 'are like camp fire stories for adults: a little bit dark, sometimes humorous but always weird.' Although some are strange and some are humorous, I don't think that many was supposed to be funny.
More than half are childish. I kept imagining young Boy Scouts sitting around the fires scaring each other, yelling the last line of the story for better impact.
Time and place for each story is different: some are in the present, some in the past and some in the future; some are in foreign country and some are not.
There aren't many mistake in these stories. The ones I remember are the past three day’s, the last four month’s.

THE PRICE OF AN ACQUIRED TASTE - a snippet of a working day of one very special doctor. Not very surprising

THE T. T. SOCIETY - A group of old guys get together and tell stories. This year they have a special guest.

TELL A TALE TAVERN - a man gets lost and comes upon an old inn where the innkeeper asks him to tell a story. After he finishes, the innkeeper tells him one too.

THE LEGEND OF JEDIDIAH CRANE - a story of a gold miner who thought he would give anything to get his hands on gold.

THE HAUNTED WOODS OF PAWPAW COUNTY - even if you know from the start where it would lead, this one is creepy and disturbing.

REVENGE IS VERY SWEET - I can't remember the name of the film I'd seen when I was a kid, but there was this boy who kept on killing flies. Later, something happened the flies got bigger and ... wel, this story is like that.

A LOBSTER FAMILY LUNCHEON - a family of lobsters are in their favourite restaurant and one of the specialities are Earthlings.

ARRIVAL TIME - a depressing story of a man who is alone

A TALE OF THE DAMNED - a man has disappeared (the second time) and the sheriff comes back to the asylum, where the missing man worked, to hear what he told Doctor Williamson before he disappeared the second time.

NIGHTMARE ON WALRUS ISLAND - Paul Westing, a young geologist, is sent on Walrus Island to check the strange rocks.

SWEET MARY McBRIDE - If you ask anyone, Mary McBride is a sweet old lady, a saint really. She is waiting for her friend to pick her up for a celebration in her church. While she is waiting she remembers her husband.

THE PATH TO ENLIGHTENMENT - I honestly haven't got a clue what this story is supposed to be about.

STARLIGHT - STAR FRIGHT - A newly-wed couple gets a dream offer to live in a beautiful house for a year just when they thought they wouldn't be able to find anything. This house comes with an addition though.

A GIFT FOR TIMMY - a sad story about a boy who cannot do any of the things his friends do because he is in a wheelchair. I was depressed after reading this.

THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR - an old farmer finally finds the cause for unsuccessful harvest.

ESCAPE - a murderer's wish for freedom

THE END OF EVERYTHING - the Earth has only a few days before everything is gone. This shows what would people do in that case.

A LOVE STORY - the tile tells it all (two people, both widowed, get a second chance).

If I had read these when I was eleven or twelve, I would have liked them more.

I am not sure where to begin with these. Some of these stories were scare worthy and the others did nothing to scare me at all. There were some tales I enjoyed but I felt most of them were more suited to be told around a campfire with a group of scouts or with friends in hopes of scaring some of them right out of their seats. If you want something that is quick and light for reading, then these tales would definitely be for you but try not to read them in the dark.

Decent to Wind Down

Some of the stories in this anthology weren't bad, but they were all fairly predictable. Some of them were not edited well and the grammar isn't great, but if you're looking for something to read at night while you're trying to fall asleep, there are certainly worse books.

“Weirder than Weird” by Francis Burger is in total compliance with the Trades Description Act. Although I cannot vouch for the actual state of Mr. Burger’s mind, I can and will say that, if these tales are the result of a disturbed mind, I wouldn’t mind having a disturbed mind myself! The 18 bizarre tales comprising this collection truly are “weirder than weird”. They are also very entertaining. Some of these tales are “creepy” weird, while others are more “strange” weird. Some are even “funny” weird, but they really are a pretty broad assortment of good, weird tales.

This is Mr. Burger’s first book of short stories. However, based on this collection, I believe Mr. Burger can make a legitimate claim to having pushed the envelope just a bit further. He has a vivid and varied imagination, and it has served him well in the crafting of this collection. He further states that his goal “is to continue writing until every strange and fantastic tale that lurks in the recess’ (sic) of his mind are finally exposed to the light of day.” I hope that translates into a lot of sequels to this collection. This is a respectable anthology of short… well, “weird” tales. Some are horror, some are funny, and some are on the spooky side, but all are different from what you may be accustomed to reading. I highly recommend you get your hands on a copy of this book, and settle in for some serious weirdness.

I initially thought the stories were juvenile and predictable, and some were. But, as the book progressed, they got better. I would describe them as odd, but perhaps not "weirder than weird."
The writing was well done, but a lot of the stories had the same vibe and word usage. "Feller" seemed to be a favorite with the author. However, I did find myself pondering over a few of the stories and having to stop reading midway to think about what I had just read. Perhaps I didn't get the references, perhaps the stories were just too odd and random, or perhaps that was just what the author intended.
Overall, it was a well spent 99¢.
Worth a read.

Francis Burger is good, very good

Francis Burger is good, very good

It's simple really, I like to read and what's more important I like to read and be entertained! This short but sweet book stole a night from me, and I gladly pay that price. Deliciously deviant oddities written to tantalize the senses and create echoes of fear. Well written, quite nicely put together this small collection of fun is a great addition to anyone's digital shelf.

Wish we had 1/2 options. I would give this a 3 1/2, but it deserves the round up. Most of the stories were good, even though a few of them you could figure out the ending but they were short enough that it didn't take away from the story. Some of them were just plain weird, and not in a good way...Geese???

Some good stories here

I enjoyed most of the stories, and a couple of them were very good. A couple of them were very similar to stories I have read before, a couple of others were predictable, but several were enjoyable. It's worth the money.

Bizzare page turner

I found even though these were all short stories, they were all different and disturbing, weirder as each page turned. Spooky, scary and twisted, coming from "a disturbed mind" is an understatement. It is worth the read if you have the stomach for it.

Most of the stories are ok but they aren't up to Rod Serling level. Sorry.

Some were pretty good, none where horrible. I liked the second to last one about the sisters. Can't remember the name of it though. It's an easy read for some down time!
