A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about . . . farming????

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body.

As Jin, I’m a man of the earth. A wielder of shovels and lord of rice and wheat. And sure, I also had to die and get pulled into another universe to end up here. But guess what? I’m starting to think it was worth it.

I’ve somehow managed to get away from it all. Finally free of the bloodshed of cultivator fights, I figure I’ll live in the slow lane from here on out, my only real concern the rain—or lack thereof.

Unfortunately, I’ve suddenly got a shady organization looking for me, my cat has gone off to fight in a martial arts tournament, and my chicken has uncovered an ancient crystal containing portents of doom. You know, the usual stuff.

I’m not worried though. Sometimes trouble finds you. And while I may not be a master cultivator . . . trouble should know better than to mess with a farmer.

The third volume of the blockbuster progression-fantasy series—with more than 20 million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

This is third in an Isekai cultivation story that builds plot and characters over time. Read in order.

I love this series and have been keeping up on it on Royal Road for months, now. So I'm technically way past this arc and just checked out the KU for nostalgia. And ended up being sucked right back into the story and rereading it in its entirety. That's no small tribute to how good this story is.

I love how the author plays with anime and xianxia tropes, extends them, and even gives them heart. Jin is a guy from Canada pulled into that world and completely aware of the tropes; an awareness he uses to subvert them where he can. It's great seeing him navigate the world with his modern sense and simple kindness and build his little found family in creating his farm. Farmily. Crap, I think I'm reusing that from a previous review of the series.

This one deals with a tournament and that's a whole list of tropes we get to explore. And I love how much of a central figure Tigu becomes. She has come a long way from being simply Jin's cat and I love how her open curiosity and boisterous good nature conquers the tournament and pulls all these aggressive competitors into something of a friendly whole. Her approach to competition infects the others as they see her joy in proving herself without rancor or hard feelings. And that's before you get to all the nicknames she hands out wholesale. And can I just say that Tie Delun/Handsome Man won my heart as Tigu stole his?

And I love how the author takes the big battle scene and extends it to its aftermath; all that destruction has meaning to those affected. And not in some weepy way, but just with Jin observing “If you break something, fix it.” And then watching as the sect disciples turn that into a competition that helps instead of hurts. Because of course that's how they would!

And I'd like to pull out as well how good a job the author does weaving multiple storylines and multiple PoVs together. Both things generally annoy me, but this author manages to tie it all into storytelling in a way I thought flows very well. So it doesn't kill the pace, making switches in natural transition points and building my interest while satisfying it so I'm never left hanging.

Anyway, I highly recommend the series and this is a great extension of it. And if you really want to continue the story, it's still going strong on Royal Road.

A note about Chaste: Gou Ren gets a sweetie in this one and there are shenanigans. Off-page shenanigans with nothing more than some third-person observations of kissing. So I consider this very chaste, even when Jin and Meiling (who are married now) are reunited at the end.

I love this series
If you've gotten here after reading books 1 & 2 than you already know what these books are like and just want to know one thing: Is this one as good as the rest?
Oh Yeah. it sure is.
You could make a strong argument that this is the best one yet, but that would be like having a favorite child.
There has been absolutely no drop in quality. The plot is clearer, the characters more developed, and the world building more textured and rounded. the humor is just as funny.
And the things that Jin and his found family get up to in this book are just a bit wilder than ever before.
If you read the first two books you likely didn't stop to take a breath before starting this one. The only reason to check the review is to make sure this one isn't a disappointment.
It's not.
Dig in and enjoy the first reading of a book you will read over and over for years to come.

11/30/23 Notes: Audiobook

I can't verify that stuff has been cut out of Volume 2, which is now BoC 2 + 3, but it does seem like some monologues and action scenes have been cut down or out. It seemed like the action scenes were shorter than what I remember reading on RR.

Fun BoC
- Chosen Family (People, Animals, Spirits)
- Wacky Cultivation (I hope the author works out the kinks of cultivation and show the readers a clear methodology. I'd be happy with consistency within story bounds.)
- Humor & Bloody Tears (Cause that's what growing means.)
- Casual Power that isn't completely taken for granted.

11/29/23 Notes:

Went on RR & confirmed that Audiobook 2 & 3 are parts 1 & 2 of Volume 2. Looks like CasualFarmer adjusted numbers & changed Volume 3 to 4. That may change again depending on how long 3 now 4 ends up being.

Note to Self: Keep review notes for 3 now 4 & transplant later. 😆

11/14/23 Notes: Audiobook for 3 is coming out soon. I hope it's the whole of 3? Looking forward to it.

*Reading on RR* 01/27 to 01/29:

Ch27 - The Breaking of 天 (Tian) Part 1

Pausing here because it'll be a flashback. Current chapters only go up to C58.2 & that won't take long for me to read at all. XD

Wow... this volume was a ton of fun!! 😁😁 Definitely my favorite installment of the beloved BoC series so far.

If you like cultivation & isekai theme, check out this series. It's super cozy and enjoyable. Start from book 1 though.

I can see why this has been one of the more popular online serials over the last few years. It has an appealing cast of characters, a cheerful and sometimes moving vibe, each focal character having their own problems, plot arcs, battles to fight, and romance. There's always something new going on, but it doesn't get into plot-hydra mode and lose its way for very long.

Both of the major plot lines in this volume were entertaining in their own way, though both being focused on fighting and violence didn't leave a lot of room for life on Faram. I liked the tournament arc a lot better than the one about the , especially since Tigu got out in the world and increased her circle of friends, including a guy who seems to be on track to be her boyfriend at some point in the future. Handsome Man. Hehe.

The history of this world continues to come to light, and . . . it isn't all that interesting or unusual. It's pretty obvious that thanks to Jin Joh's help, . As much as the story setup quite a few audio hours ago would seem to contradict it, we're in a story where our MC is the most enlightened and powerful being in the land, loved or at least respected by all except the terminally wicked, who are eventually terminated with extreme prejudice. Its also being a harem story would make it intolerable--as is, we have a perfectly harmonious and near-immediately fruitful monogamous marriage, a bit of wish fulfillment in its own right. Don't get me wrong, I like Meimei a lot, and I think she and Jin are a very nice couple, and she is a strong and interesting character in her own right.

My major ongoing gripe about this serial/series so far is its frequent digressions into points of view and situations that put both the action and interpersonal arcs aside for boring sidetracks that contribute little or nothing to the story. We really don't need to see the points of view of third-string characters like shopkeepers, sect leaders, or bureaucrats. I see the intention of creating a vibrant world where everyone has their own little troubles, but there are better ways to handle that than stopping everything short for a few paragraphs about paperwork or the minutiae of running a shop. That said, I very much like new characters Xianghua* and her brother, and think they are worthy additions to the central cast. There's also a new "Chinese Zodiac" character for Faram.

* I had to look up the spelling since this was an audiobook! :)

I listened to this one as an audiobook with my partner on various commutes, and we enjoyed it a lot (him a bit more than me) and are interested in seeing where the plot crumbs dropped in this volume will lead us in the next. Travis Baldree was an excellent narrator, giving unique voices to all the characters, and doing well with all kinds of moods, from violent, to funny, to tender.

This was a great continuation for the series as it shifts focus to Tigu and Cai Xiulan's participation in the Dueling Peak's tournament. The pacing felt a little slow in certain parts, specifically dealing with Bi De's crystal, but overall this volume covered a lot of ground.

I'm not really a big cultivation fan, and have become less of one in the past few years. But BoC manages to deliver on many tropes while not delving too deeply into the things I dislike, namely edgelord main characters and constant degradation and sexual assault on the female characters.

This series excels with the characterizations. Honestly, there are a lot of characters in this story, but they all feel uniquely real rather than leaning on a gimmick. All too often, stories will just give characters different colored hair and expect the reader to remember who is who. But here, each character not only tends to have a unique appearance, but also a different power set and desires in life. Despite nearly a dozen of the characters being farm animals, the character work in this story is head and shoulders what I often see in typical cultivation/gamelit stories.

I can't wait to see where the next volume takes things for all our characters in the Azure Hills.

This series is a masterpiece. Despite this being the weakest of the books so far, it is still an easy 5 star read. There are things that I would rather have seen happen in this book, but that doesn't mean I didn't absolutely love every minute of this story.

This book is mainly focused on two things that should bug the hell out of me; a martial arts tournament similar to ones I have read about a thousand times before, and a shift away from the protagonist to focus on side characters. The first should bug me because it is a step away from what makes this series unique. The second should bug me because Jin's story is what I'm here to read as it is the one that interests me most, and I'm usually a proponent of limiting POVs as much as possible.

However, here neither of these things bugged me all that much. Though the tournament arc itself was not even remotely original, what surrounded it was a prime example of what Beware of Chicken does so well. It takes the xianxia trope of competing sects and turns it on its head through the innocent zest for life and excitement for a magic martial arts competition that is bundled up in the character of Tigu. This brilliant character inserts the joy back into a storyline that would normally be all tension and conflict, bringing people together instead of forcing them apart. As usual with this series, it had me grinning through every moment.

As for the shift away from Jin, this one actually did bug me a little, but not so much that I even thought for a second about removing a star from this review. I adore all the characters in this series. Each of them are distinct, loveable in their own way, and interesting enough that I'll happily accept stories about them if I can't stay with Jin.

While I would prefer stories that focus more on what makes this series different from other stories in this genre, I'll more than happily take this as a consolation prize.

magnificent

I originally read this on RoyalRoad. Just as good as I remember.

This volume really opens the story up. TOURNAMENT ARC! But also connection with the wider world.

Keep in mind this was written originally as a serial.

The best Xianxia series I know of.

Best Beware of Chicken yet. Has a tone of action, drama, character development, and just plain fun. A bit less slice of life, but it's such a wonderful book.

This series gets better and better.

I love the wise and moral approach that the protagonist takes and how that philosophy is being seeded into nearby communities like a virus. I hope there's more to come.

“You tell ’em, Big D"

As the story progresses, Jin has to face unintended consequences of his decisions, of striving to be a better person and sharing his knowledge with his new friends.

We have now more of Tigu and Xiulan. Tigu, now comfortable in her new skin, can't wait to brawl with whoever's willing, and Xiulan is ready to accept whatever the duels may present. Or is she? They are all on their way to the Dueling Peaks, along with Ri Zu and Gou Ren.

New friends, new challenges, old preconceptions defied, incredible fights and emotional stories awaits in this third book of the series.

I cannot have enough of this story, and hopefully I can get used to reading somewhere else, since this is the last one published.

The story takes more of serious tone than both former books. The characters of this novel are its key factor of success and developing many of the main characters with new supporting characters makes this much entertaining. The plot line in the middle does go off to standard shounen manga troupe and can see the plot from a mile away. This novels success lies in its mundane and quieter moments than anything else.

I think the novelty is wearing off. Book 1 was a great start, 2 was running high on its coat tails, but 3 was run of the mill Xianxia/LitRPG/Empire building I still gave it 5 coz of the lovable spirit beasts.

Beware of Chicken 3 continues the series' mix of humor, charm, and cozy fantasy, but it didn’t quite capture my attention the way the earlier books did. While the characters and world remain delightful, the story felt less engaging, and I found myself struggling to stay invested. Still, fans of the series will likely enjoy its familiar warmth and quirky moments. 3.5 stars.

The third volume of this ongoing series shifts the focus away from the slice of life that it's been until now, adding more plot to the mix, as well as some of the shouty xianxia martial arts stuff that the series has been parodying until now. It also shifts the focus away from Jin to some of the secondary characters who are attending the province-wide tournament. Xiulan is there to win honour for her sect, while Tigger just wants to fight. The tournament stuff was fun enough, but I much more enjoyed how Tigger and her friends made friends with other people at the tournament, and how they all came to her rescue when things went bad. Tigger has, until now, been just enjoying the sheer fun of fighting, without much in the way of consequences, because she's always been safe. Here it's not her who is hurt, but they threaten people she's close to, and that changes the whole situation for her. She's still growing as a person, as is Xiulan, who goes to help Tigger, despite not having to, and all the incentives to not get involved.

We've been having hints that Jin is substantially more powerful than he thinks that he is, and here we finally get to see him use that power. It's not a fight if you finish your opponent with one punch, but the outcome is that his quiet life as just a farmer in a backwater province is over. Lui Ri, from his old sect, has found him and passed on the message from his grandfather, and the sect elders have all discovered how powerful that Jin is. Things are going to change, but for the moment, he has his family around him and all's well with the world.

I was sorry to see very little of Meiling in this book, as she stays at the farm, while Jin has his business in the provincial capital and the others go to the tournament. Hopefully we'll see more of her in future. There's also more hints about the world and what might have happened in the history of the Azure Hills to leave it as it is. And the links with Jin and the earth spirit (who gets a name here: Tianlan) that he's connected to. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes, although I do hope it doesn't start to become what it's parodying, where everyone becomes more and more powerful and has to fight bigger and bigger monsters. I enjoy the light, slice of life stuff, with Jin just acquiring more found family as he goes. I'll still be looking out for the next volume though.

Beware of Chicken 3 was a great way to start off my 2024 reading. I absolutely loved getting back together with these characters. It's time for the Dualing Peak tournament and several of Jin's disciples head off to participate in the fun while Jin and Meimei take care of things at the farm. Sort of.

The story is great for fans who like the kung fu tournament trope and yet still has that cozy feel. While we do get to visit with all of the characters, Tigger and Shao Lan have the most page time and character growth due to tournament events. It's amazing how far Tigger's character has come since book 1. The tournament was a lot of fun and I like the new friends the characters made along the way.

I've sometimes commented after watching a Marvel movie (or similar action movies) where a lot of cities are destroyed as the heroes fight it out with the villains that we never get to see the aftermath. Apparently I wasn't alone with this thought. I greatly appreciated the author taking the story there and how it was treated. More people with Jin's attitude would make the world a better place. There are some interesting long lasting consequences for Jin based on related events so I'm interested to see where this goes next.

Now the wait for #4 on audio begins.

-------------
Initial thoughts: This was a great way to start the new year. I absolutely loved getting back together with these characters. The tournament was a lot of fun and even had some long lasting consequences. I'm looking forward to where these characters go next.

Right, this is the tournament arc book in the series. I know that anime and manga fans out there have mixed feelings about that when it comes to their stories, myself included. Sometimes this means a total slog in the story or at least a lot of nothing happening for long periods of time. I can assure you that this is not the case here though. This is a tournament arc done right. We get plenty of meaningful plot and character development. If anything the biggest strength this entry has is that we get plenty of focus on the secondary cast rather than our leads, and this is great because I feel like I really have a wonderful family of characters here now. I wish I could spell their names to put them here, but as I said in a previous books review, audiobook and Chinese sounding names means I have no idea how any of them are actually spelled and am too lazy to look them up.

But yeah, this is another solid entry in the series. I look forward to the next book, and yet I'm scared too, since it's either the last, or the most current book. Then I'll have to find something else to read. Oh well. Such is life, right?

Book 3 continues the story of Jin Rou and the Fa Ram along with all the spirit animals.

Tig'uerr heads off to compete in a dueling competition along with the girl who recuperated at the Fa Ram. There they meet lots of other people and other sects. Jin takes a new cart to meet the Azure Trading Company with his new rice and maple syrup. There is at least another half dozen or more storylines going on as well.

On top of that book 3 feels also like a reboot. The world when the book begins is not the same when the book ends, much to the detriment of Jin. There is a lot packed into this book and I'm not sure what direction book 4 will take.

The editing was fine for a Xiansia novel, which is to say I have no idea if the names and places were spelled correctly. I took them at face value. I'm looking forward to where the story goes. Book 3 isn't as funny as the first two books but makes up for it in other ways. 5/5*

I get so engrossed in these audiobooks and I couldn’t tell you why.

This entry felt a lot more ‘lore’ fuelled and a bit more fight-focused than the previous iterations but was still a fabulous listen.

The VA is great.

A little bit more excitement in this book! I liked that several storylines that were hinted at in the first two books finally paid off! All in all this book was a bit less slice of life and a bit more martial arts tournament in Dragonball Z, but I really didn't mind the change of pace.

There's a joke somewhere about a Monkey-looking Boy scoring a Bad B!tch with face blindness...

The series has proven to be the highlight of my year. I have to force myself to wait until September to read the fourth and fifth book and for now I am about to start a re-read to appreciate the content even more. Admittedly, I was quite reluctant to give it five stars, but I can no longer resist, it is, inded, five stars.

The first half of this book while nice, wasn’t the greatest.

The second half of this book was very great.

Much peak moments in this, especially all the shenanigans with the shrouded mountains sect.

Xiu Lan’s fight against Tigu, and also her fight against those scums was fantastic. Her character development in general was fun to witness.

One of the coolest moments in this book was Jin’s arrival to the mess and that beautiful punch. It was also great to see how relieved everyone became now that the great master is here.

Original Jin’s relationship with his gramps was cool, beautiful flashback.

Another highlight of this book was the interactions between Jin and Rou, what a cool element.

The adventures of Big D were also noicee.

Beware of Chicken 3 (Beware of Chicken, #3) by CasualFarmer: Unnecessarily long

Beware of Chicken 3 (Beware of Chicken, #3) by CasualFarmer continues the quirky and comedic journey of a protagonist unexpectedly thrust into the world of farming and adventure. While the series has delighted readers with its humorous premise and endearing characters, this third installment struggles to maintain the same level of charm and engagement, offering a narrative that feels repetitive and lacks depth.

CasualFarmer's writing style remains light-hearted and accessible, with witty dialogue and humorous situations that elicit chuckles from the reader. However, the plot feels formulaic and predictable, with little in the way of meaningful character development or narrative progression.

In this book, readers are once again transported to the protagonist's farm as they navigate the challenges of raising chickens and fending off various misadventures. While the concept is amusing, the execution feels stale, with the plot relying heavily on recycled jokes and scenarios that fail to elicit the same level of laughter as in previous installments.

When critically analyzing the plot of Beware of Chicken 3, it becomes apparent that the narrative lacks depth and complexity. The conflicts feel contrived and arbitrary, lacking the emotional weight needed to invest readers in the story. Additionally, certain plot threads are left unresolved, leaving the narrative feeling incomplete and unsatisfying.

Moreover, the character development in this installment feels lacking, with the protagonist and supporting cast failing to undergo significant growth or evolution throughout the narrative. While there are moments of introspection and personal growth, they ultimately feel superficial and fail to resonate with the reader.

Overall, Beware of Chicken 3 (Beware of Chicken, #3) is a disappointing continuation of the series, offering a lackluster and uninspired narrative that struggles to recapture the magic of its predecessors. While it may provide some entertainment for fans of the genre, it ultimately lacks the depth and substance needed to leave a lasting impression.
