Book #1 in the series: Heretofore Innocent But Secretly Terrifying Children's Stories

Here's a question for all you parents and teachers who spend literal hours of your life singing this song to your children: did you know it's secretly a tragedy? Don't believe me? I can prove it. Let's just parse it line by line to see the slow, terrible progress of our rolling catastrophe-to-be.

"The wheels on the bus go round and round. . ."
Yes, yes, we know what this means: the wheels are spinning as they roll on the road. Moving on. . .

"The doors on the bus go open and shut, open and shut, open and shut. The doors on the bus go open and shut, all through the town."
Here's the first hint of bad things to come. Those doors are opening and shutting with disturbing frequency. There are lots of people getting on this bus. Sounds like it might be crowded.

"The driver on the bus says 'Move on back'. . ."
This corroborates our impressions from the previous line. The driver only has to tell people to move back when the bus is crowded -- standing room only -- and there are so many bodies that they're bulging past the yellow line. It's now clear that this bus is dangerously overcrowded.

"The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish. . ."
It's raining. So now we have a dangerously overcrowded bus ambulating in the rain, two extremely distracting factors for our driver.

"The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep. . ."
This line is key. When have you ever heard a bus driver honking her horn? The song tells it like it's the most natural thing in the world, but this virtually never happens. Unless there's a clear and present danger on the road. Unless, maybe, there's about to be an accident!

"The babies on the bus go 'wah, wah, wah". . ."
Yeah, babies crying, right? It used to be sort of confusing: why do babies on a bus just automatically cry? Is that a thing?

Well now we know babies on a bus DON'T automatically cry. They're crying because the bus driver had to suddenly swerve and has lost control of the bus, maybe on a bridge or something, and they're going over the side. It's obviously a very scary situation that is causing these babies to cry.

Babies don't just cry because they ride a bus. Babies love riding buses! Seriously, one of the only times my baby DIDN'T cry was when he was riding a bus!

"The mommies on the bus say 'I love you'. . ."
You probably know where I'm going with this one, a little thing called "last words."

"The wheels on the bus go round and round. . ."
I bet that all this time you thought this was a simple refrain, right? Just going back to the beginning to wrap it up neatly?

Yeah no.

Those wheels are still spinning, sure. They're spinning round and round, but not on the ground this time.

They're spinning in the air.

Cause the bus flipped over and everyone inside died.

(Fade to black.)

I rest my case.

A good friend gave me this for my grandson. I, of course, had to read it before giving it to him. It is that charming little sing-a-long story we all remember told through charmingly drawn illustrations in a board book format. It will be as much fun to sing as to read and since my grandson loves music, this is sure to be a hit. For me it was a delight to study the people in their many depictions, antics and expressions. And if by chance you have forgotten the lyrics to this ditty, here they are:
The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round
Round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All 'round the town

The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish
Swish, swish, swish
Swish, swish, swish
The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish
All 'round the town

The driver on the bus goes 'move on back'
Move on back
Move on back
The driver on the bus goes 'move on back'
All 'round the town

The people on the bus go up and down
Up and down
Up and down
The people on the bus go up and down
All 'round the town

The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep
Beep, beep, beep
Beep, beep, beep
The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep
All 'round the town

The baby on the bus goes 'whaa whaa whaa'
Whaa whaa whaa
Whaa whaa whaa
The baby on the bus goes 'whaa whaa whaa'
All 'round the town

The parents on the bus go 'shh, shh, shh'
Shh, shh, shh
Shh, shh, shh
The parents on the bus go 'shh, shh, shh'
All 'round the town

Does this count as reading, when in actuality I was singing??
What great fun when your 15 mo old grandson brings you this book and crawls up next to you with big blue expectant eyes! We sang it over and over, eventually becoming a Thanksgiving dinner choir of seven adults! I’m still humming the melody.

I dare you to try to read this and NOT sing it! My daughter seems to like it more because my husband and I sing it together, pointing at the pictures (which are pretty cute, by the way) as we go. Although the style for the illustrations is nothing to write home about, if you look closely at the different characters, there's usually something amusing going on. For example, there's a bratty little girl on the bus that likes to stick her tongue out at everyone. When the bus goes up and down, a woman has difficulty holding on to her basket of eggs and the old ladies open their eyes wide in surprise.

I'd like to own this book some day. :) It seems like it'll be a go to for a while (fortunately/unfortunately).

I mean, it's a book about the song. Not sure what I expected. And I was thrown off by the Tardis-esque dimensions of the bus itself.

Millennial nostalgia aside, the illustrations in this book are so whimsical. They're busy, but not overwhelming. They exude warmth. You could get lost in them, dreaming up the lives shown inside and outside the frames of the pictures. Great book.

1. This song book has not won any awards.

2. This song book can be used from preschool and up.

3. This is a classic book on a classic song. With vivid color and illustration, this book really captivates the readers. In using rhythm and repetition this book is an easy read/sing for children of all ages. It is an important way to help give kids an insight to a bus, which some kids may take to school everyday.

4. I remember this song being on a CD my mom used to play in the car all the time. I used to belt it out in my car. I have fond memories of my cousins and I making up different things that happen on this bus and singing them to the tune of the song.

5. One lesson you can teach with this book, due to the repetitive nature is creating a class book. After singing this song, you can have the children come up with their own ideas of what happens on the bus. They can then write/draw their answers. This will give them an interactive way to engage in this song book. Once they all finish writing, you can have them each sing their new part.

Another lesson you can teach with this book is about community and the outside world. Things happen when on public transportation. You can help your kids understand what to expect while on a bus. Like said above many kids may even take a bus to school. You can teach a lesson on bus safety and what is expected of them on a school bus, after singing this song. It will be a smooth and fun way to explain a tough lesson.

Original summary:
The book tells a story of the different things happening during the travels of a bus in form of song. The wheels go round and round, the whipers go swish swish swish, the drive on the bus goes move on back, the people go up and down, the baby goes wah wah wah.

Original review:
I like this book as it puts nice and descriptive illustrations to the traditional wheels on the bus song. It gives a visual to the song while also catching interest of the reader with a catchy repetitive tune.

Possible in-class uses:
-The students can learn to do a dance that requires them to do different body movements with the song. For example, using their arms to swish like the windshield, move their bodies up and down like the passengers, roll their arms as the bus do. This will allow them to create a meaningful experience with the text and create meaning to words they maybe didn't know.
-The students can practice their retelling of a text through drawing. After reading the story and singing the song, the students can draw what they think a bus would look like based on what they read. Example of things they include would be wheels, bus driver, people, baby, windshield wiper, a town, etc. This will show their comprehension of the story.

This book tells a story of the different things happening during the travels of a bus in the form of song. This is the most common song which is sung to younger children. The wheels go round and round, the wipers go swish swish swish, the driver on the bus goes move on back, the people go up and down, the baby goes wah wah wah, the parents say sh sh sh, the horn goes beep beep beep, and the book ends with the wheels on the bus go round and round. This is such an awesome book. I feel in love with the illustrations! They are beautifully done which will attract the children's attention. The appropriate grade level for this book would be pre-kindergarten through kindergarten. An appropriate activity I can complete with children would be doing a dance around the room that requires them to do different body movements with the song. This would be a good large motor skill activity and also get the children's energy out. Another activity I can complete with children would be putting the child's name on a bus. I would then cut the bus into stripes that will display one letter of their name on each piece. The children can then put their name in the correct order by letter recognition.

Grade: Pre-k and up
Summary: This vivid book is a classic story and song that all school aged children know, and if not they will soon. Its colorful illustration brings the book to life and captivates the readers. The song that goes along with this book is full of motions and repetition. The song is easy to remember and fun to sing along to. Most children take the bus to school each day so this is a very relate-able and appropriate song for an elementary classroom.
Review: This song is fun and engaging and almost all young children love to sing along and act out the motions. I think it creates a fun and playful environment for the children to just enjoy and be merry.
In Class Use: This song book would be great for a transition song to get the kids up and moving, or utilized as a fun way to spend some free time. This also encourages reading when the song is followed along with the book.

3) Summary - This board book tells the classic “Wheels on the Bus” song, along with colorful illustrations on each page. It is a new take on an old classic! This book will help to further stimulate a child’s development.
4) Review - I love the idea of adding pictures to this song to give children a visual aid. I also like that the music is included in the back of the book. Working at a daycare, with a bunch of children who love this song, I can see it being an excellent classroom addition.
5) As an extension of this book, teachers can show their students the hand plays to the song in order to make the book more interactive. Although this book is primarily for very young children, it can be brought into a lower grade elementary classroom to teach about Rhyming and Repetition. The children would also feel comfort because you are starting out with something that they are probably already familiar with.

Summary: Wheels on the Bus by Raffi Cavoukian is a classic song that deals with the motions of the bus. The doors open and close, the wipers go 'swish' swish' and much more. This song is catchy, fun, and every young child will continually sing this song over and over again.
Review: I have loved this song since I was a little girl. I remember singing this song with my family and my friends at school. The illustrations in this version are brightly colored and realistic. All young children would love to sing this song while looking at the colorful illustrations. They will have this song stuck in their heads for years to come. I highly recommend this song for young children that are learning repetition and rhythm.
Classroom uses: The song can be used in the classroom as a song for morning meeting. The song can spark a conversation about what the students hear on their bus rides or in their car rides to school.

3. Wheels on the Bus is a book that is based on a children’s song. The school bus drives through town. The book describes how the school bus and its passengers make specific motions and sounds.
4. I have always heard the song but never got the opportunity to have it visually presented to me. I loved having a song that I have known my whole life come alive right before my eyes. Watching the school bus and its passengers made me feel a sense of community while the imagery within the song helped things like the wheels move in my mind.
5. The educator could give the children a worksheet that includes a photo of the school bus with pieces of the image missing that were within the story (wheels, wipers, people, etc.) and the children have to cut out the images and place them in the right spot. The educator could also create a wheels on the Bus bingo game using those images.

This book is a classic nursery rhyme and the song is about all the motions of a school bus. Singing and reading to children is important to enhance a child's knowledge and help them learn rhythm, rhyme, and repetition. This helps child develop listening, reading, and other skills to improve a child's speech.
The illustrations are very bright and are included with the songs which gives children a better understanding of what is going on. As a child, I always enjoyed singing this nursery rhyme and perform this while I was in an actual bus. It is a great book to engage and involve children to sing along and learn new skills.
1.Students can draw a picture of the bus and write what do they do in the morning when they get in the bus.
2. teacher can sing along with the children as a class, using gestures to go along with the story, and repetition

The Wheels on the Bus by Raffi Cavoukian is my all time favorite book as a little kid. I always read this book when I was little and still love it today. I just love how you can sing your way through this book. Instead of reading the book, you can sing it. The illustrations are wonderful by explains what is happening on the bus.

The intended audience for this book would be for Kindergartners and first graders. The teacher could hold up the book and have the students sing along to it. The students could also do the actions when singing. I have always loved this book because it is a funny and easy book for students to read or sing.

1. This book is good for pre-k through 3rd grade.

2. This book is about a bus and all the different things that happen. The bus wheel turns, the baby cries, what else do you think happens? Find out while reading this entertaining story.

3. This book is great to read to children of all ages, it is a book you can sing to your child or with a class. It is very repetitive and it is a good book for children to understand and sing along. Readers can also use hand motions while reading to get the child physically involved.

4. This book can be used in class as a sing along and something students can dance to and be active during transitioning to another subject.

Another great love of my niece's. Last time I was there for bed time, she handed me this book no less than 6 times to read/sing to her. Her mom had to hide it so she'd stop asking me to sing it. lol She knows all her actions too (beeping the horn, swishing the wipers, ushering people back, going up and down).

We did swap out some words though. Instead of wah wah wah, the babies on the bus go tee hee hee (because my niece cries in the car and we don't want to encourage her) and the parents say I love you instead of shushing. Makes no sense to shush a baby that's laughing, right? Sometimes the auntie's say I love you too. lol

Music is on the last page if you need the notes.

3) In this book there are many people that ride the bus. There are descriptive sounds of what the people make and of what the bus makes.
4) This book is a great visual representation of the song. This book is an easy beginning read because children can sing and follow along to the words.
5) a) The children can make a page of the sounds that are on their bus by drawing a picture. The teacher can model the writing.
b) Children can match the picture of the parts of the bus (wheels, wipers, door, windows....) to its word

This book is a nice rendition of the classic children's song Wheels on the bus. I enjoyed the pictures and thought they added to the song.
