This was a very pleasant surprise. I went into Deep Fried Trouble not realizing that it was a Christian cozy mystery. I almost hate to admit this out loud, but if I see something labeled "Christian Fiction" I will skip right over it. I don't tend to enjoy overt religiousness of any kind in my fiction. I feel preached to and I find that unpleasant. However, Tyora Moody may make me give another Christian fiction book a more fair shake in the future. Although Eugeena's faith is without a doubt front and center in this story it didn't make me feel beat about the head. There is a story in Deep Fried Trouble that is engaging and the characters feel like people I would know. I will be picking up book two in the future as an audio book again. The narrator Sharell Palmer is so good that I would like to contiue experiencing these stories in her voice.

Who-Dun-It?

The quiet neighborhood of Sugar Creek in North Charleston will never be the same after one of their own is found dead in her home. Evidence points likely in the direction of someone in the neighborhood. But who? Widowed and recently retired Eugeena Patterson, a longtime resident, is determined to figure out who and why.

“Deep Fried Trouble” was a cute and quick read. However, if you are looking for a mystery, you may be disappointed as there wasn’t much mystery though attempted. For example, regarding the neighbor found dead, nothing was told to readers to even indicate it was a murder. She was an elderly lady who could have very easily succumbed to health issues. Readers just assumed or followed the lead and direction of the story without information to support it. A few characters were introduced as possible suspects, but not much beyond that. Labeled “A Eugeena Patterson Mystery” I expected more mystery and intrigue. Something to keep readers guessing until the end or coming up with their own possible suspect list.

By no means a bad book, I’m interested to see where Tyora Moody takes Eugeena Patterson next. Hopefully with a little more mystery.

Review:

"Deep Fried Trouble" by Tyora Moody was a wonderful powerful read. Even though it is a mystery Christian read this author was able to deliver to the read a excellent read that will keep you turning the pages until the end. I was able to even laugh at some of the things that went on in this novel. One of my favorites was the dealing with the dog named 'Porgy.' Now, to find out about that you will have to pick up this good read to see how this author was able to deliver to us a intriguing read.

It all starts in this 'Sugar Creek Community'...for Eugeena Patterson who is now retired and just wanting to do her own thing...being over the 'Neighborhood Association in her neighborhood ..... trying to loose some weight due to her 'sugar,'... however who knew that from a daily walk....passing her neighbors' home just who would be running around and barking at her like crazy? Where was Porgy's owner(Mary)...who had once been her best friend...and the story will pick up from there.. finding her in ....then the story will take off on another subject with Eugeena's daughter(Leesa). Leesa has returned home with another grandchild, but then leaves and doesn't take her children with her....only leaving them with her mother (Eugeena) and not telling her dear mom where in the world she is. Now, poor Eugeena has had so much in her life...she had lost her husband due to illness (now a widow)....newly retired, now has discovered a (estranged) murdered friend from the neighborhood, new dog in her house, and two grandchildren all thrust into her life and wait their will be more. What about the 'recently widowed Amos Jones' who lives next door who is willing to help Eugeena with....? Who is now the prime suspect in Mary's murder and why? What all is going on...was their someone from the neighborhood ....? You will only get all the answers by picking up "Deep Fried Trouble" to find out. I found all of the characters well developed and very interesting. Be ready for some twist and turns in the well written script that this author has presented to the reader but in the end you will have read a excellent inspirational mystery-suspenseful read. The only thing next that you will be asking for is Ms. Moody's next book ...I am sure their will be more from 'Eugeena Patterson Mysteries.' Very well written Ms. Moody...you did a good job with this novel!

Deep Fried Trouble is a Eugeena Patterson mystery brought to us by Tyora Moody. It is part one in a series of three books, all of which have officially been released.

Readers are introduced to Eugeena, a long suffering Mother to a daughter who is distant and troubled, victim of a restricted healthy diet and unlucky enough to stumble upon the dead body of her former best friend who she had a notorious beef with.

Deep fried you say?
The title says it all. Okay, maybe it doesn’t really tell you that actually virtually nothing is really fried because of the aforementioned diet. Good health is a good thing. Healthy eating is wonderful. But if you are looking for a cozy mystery with recipes for deep fried goodies then you will want to look elsewhere.

Which of course is part of the trouble isn’t it? When I dive into a cozy mystery I have been mentally trained to expect one with a quirky title related to food preparation to include lots of food preparation. Oftentimes we readers are gifted with recipes at the back. Perhaps the author will one day release a separate healthy soul food cookbook based on some of the meals mentioned. Such as oven baked fried chicken. A bit of an oxymoron but certainly worth a try!

I cannot be super disappointed in the book for not being more inclusive of descriptions of food that I expected based on the title and cover art. There was food that was mentioned although it didn’t sound particularly amazing, even to Eugeena’s own admission at times.

The trouble with love is…
This was a book that in many ways discusses love, family and difficult long lasting friendships. Eugeena has a love interest, Amos, with a background that allows him to mingle with the local law enforcement. As a widow we learn of her former life as a schoolteacher and wife of a physician. We also learn a bit about her sons and her devotion to her grandchildren.

When her emotionally distant daughter storms into town bringing with her plenty of surprises and secrets we see Eugeena’s desire to defend and protect her child unfold. While she has the aforementioned history of bad blood with her former neighbor who is buried with the secrets of who killed her she expresses her regrets but pledges to find the killer while also taking care of the deceased woman’s Corgi.

Throughout the novel and despite her reluctance to accept or adjust to certain things it is clear that Eugeena is a woman with the heart of a Christian who wants to offer forgiveness and assistance in whatever way she can. It is endearing as a character trait and makes you want to see her win and find the killer of her friend.

Eugeena admits to her own character flaws and is very introspective. Friendship, especially long lasting ones, can be very difficult to maintain as with any relationship. I took away the feeling that she was admitting her mistakes and wanted to make things right even though she didn’t have the ability to do that before her friend was killed.

Detective skills… you can’t hide from the neighborhood watch
Ah, the whodunit and why? Ms. Patterson is on the prowl and determined not to let up. Her investigative style is disarming- as would be expected of a grandmother as sweet as southern iced tea. She asks simple questions and is not afraid to get herself into dicey situations.

Case closed
I gave this book four and a half out of five stars. I really enjoyed it and will pursue the other two and a half books in the series- the next being Oven Baked Secrets.

One thing I would have liked would have been the selection of a killer with a twist. I figured out who the murderer was based on simple clues and was not entirely satisfied with the motivation behind the actions that person took. Overall it was the story itself inclusive of the mystery surrounding her daughter, the main character and her truly sweet heart that drew me in and will keep me coming back for more.

I have never met Ms. Moody, but some kinda way, she reached down in my soul and went into my future and found my future personality and wrote out my business as Eugeena Patterson! I absolutely love Eugeena's personality.

Meet Eugeena Patterson, newly retired, recently widowed, empty nested. She is trying to get herself together. She recently found out she's diabetic and is trying to be healthy. She gets her walk on each day and is trying her best not to pass out at the sight of her neighbor, the dashing Amos...who she is secretly crushing on! She is just thinking that she may be lonely because of the empty house. She got sooooo flustered talking to her neighbor that she started off on her walk in the wrong direction. Was it flusteryness or divine intervention? When she gets to the bottom of the hill, she comes to the house of her former BFF, Mary, and starts to reminisce over the demise of their friendship. She gets a bad feeling when Mary's precious Corgie (a lil dog)is loose which is VERY unusual. Eugeena follows her gut and goes to look for her former friend, only to find her on her floor in her home -- DEAD! Eugeena takes off running and comes back to her neighbor who PROMPTLY calls the police. (That in itself was hilarious...because of her description of the run!) ANYWAY...that day begins the LONGEST week in Eugeena's life. She has a few bumps and surprises after Mary's death is discovered. She EVEN finds out that her own daughter is a "person of interest." Come along for the ride as Eugeena discovers that you have to be careful what you pray for!

I laughed. I wanted to cry. I wanted to punch some folks. THEN...when it ended...I was left with my mouth wide opened because Ms. Moody has given us something to look forward to! I love that young old lady! :D - I can't wait to see what's next for Ms. Eugeena Patterson.

Probably more of a 3.5 had it not been for book club I probably wouldn’t have finished it. It just moved too slow and I peeped the killer (but not the motive) pretty early in the text. I read it on audible and enjoyed the narrator it was just a basic template mystery BUT it’s supposed to be a cozy and that was a challenge to me because calling it a cozy is a STRETCH! The murder or plot had nothing to do with cooking (which was the assumed cozy part) AND the author did not include any recipes! How rude!!!

I really enjoyed this story! Eugeena Patterson is one elderly woman that you do not want to mess with at all! She’s a devout Christian who’s recently retired and only wants some peace in her life, but the small town of Sugar Creek won’t let her rest. Detective Eugeena Patterson has a crime to solve and some family issues to resolve!
Eugeena is a busybody and will not stay still until all of her questions are answered...even if it gets her into a little trouble.
I grew up in the church, so I didn’t mind the preaching. The talking to God and reflection of bible versus reminded me of my grandmother!

This is the first book I've ever read by this author. I found it to be very well written and the characters are very likable.
When a close friend and neighbor is found dead, it sets the scene for a murder investigation that will keep the reader glued to the pages.

I liked the protagonist in this one! She's a retired social studies teacher and widow who worries about her kids and was roped into serving on the neighborhood watch committee, all while trying to change her lifestyle in order to manage her diabetes. I also love the scenes in which Eugeena interacts with her family.

I didn't know that this was Christian fiction going in, and I was actually a bit surprised that this aspect didn't bother me. Toward the end, it felt like Eugeena's internal dialog mentioned God and prayers a bit much, but overall, the aspects that would classify this as "Christian fiction" felt natural to the character, more similar to my family or friends who genuinely think about God's presence in everyday occurrences. The book also came off as refreshingly not judgey, at least in comparison to the few other Christian fiction books that I've read, because multiple characters had children out of wedlock, or have not necessarily "found God," but Eugeena still loves them (which should be normal in Christian fiction but isn't, necessarily). Furthermore, while the author seems to support working hard to keep marriages working, Eugeena admits that she and her husband had a rough time, and that sometimes marriage isn't right (e.g. case of abusive possible son-in-law).

I didn't love that Eugeena mentions multiple times that she has to lose weight, or that she shouldn't deep fry her famous fried chicken anymore. Although I support mentioning lifestyle changes that Eugeena has made in order to manage her diabetes diagnosis (which she initially wanted to hide, which felt very realistic), I wish that it could've been done in more nuanced way that was less likely to come off as fatphobic/healthist/individual-blaming. On the other hand, this book is pretty short and sweet, so it is somewhat understandable.

3.5 — This was quick cozy mystery that introduces us to Eugeena Patterson, the main character in the series.

This story was OKAY. It is very much a Christian-based fiction/mystery, which I didn’t know going in, and Eugeena referencing the good Lord every other sentence did become a bit much (LOL) but she just reads as your saved and sanctified Auntie. Like literally my actual auntie lol

I’ll definitely read the next book in this series. These give good palate cleanser.

In Deep Fried Trouble by Tyora Moody readers are introduced to Eugeenia Patterson, a retired teacher who runs her neighborhood watch association. Eugeenia finds herself in a pickle when she discovers one of her neighbors, Mary, dead in her home. Eugeenia becomes interested in the investigation especially when she learns that her daughter, Leesa, is one of the prime suspects. All of this comes out after Leesa has left her children with Eugeenia and disappears. While searching for Leesa, Eugeenia takes it upon herself to find the killer and to clear her daughter’s name.

Amos Jones is a new neighbor whom Eugeenia has been trying to get to know until the current tragedy occurred. Amos is a retire detective who offers to help Eugeenia. They are on the case to solve Mary’s murder and in the process building a beautiful relationship. When Eugeenia decides to host a neighborhood watch meeting at her home, Amos supports the decision. While Eugeenia is rounding up guest she finds herself in a dire situation. Will Eugeenia finally uncover the mystery of her neighbor’s death? Or will harm come her way trying?

Deep Fried Trouble proves holding grudges ruins relationships that you might not get a chance to repair. This was an entertaining murder mystery that kept my attention until the end. The twist and turns were unsuspected with a shocking ending. The plot was consistent and characters were well-developed. I cannot wait to see what Eugeena Patterson will get into next. I recommend Deep Fried Trouble to others.

Detective Eugeena Patterson and Deputy Dog Porgy!

Recently retired school teacher, Eugeena Patterson thought that she would be lonely and bored during retirement. Little did she know, life was just about to deliver her a large dose of excitement whether she was ready or not. After finding Mary, her good friend at one time dead; her Sugar Creek neighborhood would never be the same. Caring for her grandchildren, who were dumped on her at the last minute, organizing a neighborhood watch and trying to gage her feelings if any, for the handsome widower next door; will Eugeena be able to detect the peculiarities and not to mention murder that has rattled her neighborhood?
What a great and relaxing read. I enjoyed the story and look forward to seeing what Eugeena stumbles across next. I found the story to be heartwarming and detailed the suspects in a like able but mysterious way. You liked them and hoped they all were innocent with one exception. I hope that future stories give us a little more of what the deal is with Carmen and Eugeena's son Cedric. Also, what happened with Chris and Eugenia's daughter Leesa? Did he attempt to abuse Kisha or was it just minor disciplining? One thing that was not evident in the story, was how Mary was killed. I would have liked the author to have detailed that more. I can not wait for the next installment to catch up with Eugeena, her family and the Sugar Creek neighbors! An enjoyable cozy mystery. A 4 star read!

Anyone who has read either (or both) of the Victory Gospel series will also enjoy this, the first in a series of books featuring feisty fifty-something Eugeena Patterson.

Miss Eugeena is in one of life’s transitions. After years of marriage and family, she is now a widow with an empty nest and a diagnosis of diabetes. In need of something to fill her time, she finds herself pressed into service as the head of the newly formed Neighborhood Watch (although the neighbor she really likes to watch is Amos, the friendly widower who lives next door ).
Her quiet life is quickly interrupted in short order by an unexpected visit from her daughter (bringing a grandchild she knew about and one she didn’t) and an even more unexpected neighborhood tragedy: a murder. When her daughter emerges as a person of interest and promptly disappears, Miss Eugeena is convinced her daughter didn't kill the neighbor and feels compelled to help figure out who did.

Anybody who can juggle forced babysitting, Neighborhood Watch, flirting with a neighbor and a murder investigation is someone I want to read about, and this book did not disappoint. I look forward to reading more of the irrepressible Miss Eugeena.

Get’em Geena

Deep Fried Trouble is set in Charleston, South Carolina, the protagonist is a retired school teacher and grandmother; Eugeena Paterson.
The story begins when her daughter Leesa stops by her mother’s house and disappears without a word, leaving behind her two young children. In her relatively quiet neighbor of Sugar Creek, a string of robberies take place, a murder happens and an attempted murder shakes this neighborhood to the core. Who did it? Who do we trust?

It takes Eugeena and her host of family and friends to pull off this who dun did it now and why mystery. I truly enjoyed every aspect about this book. But what truly touched my heart was a tender moment of budding love. It’s not something you see often in books but this progressively moving author added the possibility of romance in your 60’s, as I was reading I kept saying is it possible, by the time I finished the book I was screaming YES! YES! YES! It is.

Great job! I’m looking forward to book 2: Oven Baked Secrets in 2014 wait what 2014 yup seems so far from today, but it’s all good because we will have “When Perfection Fades” in early 2014.

Within one week of retirement, Eugeena Patterson receives a rude awakening when she finds her estranged neighbor dead of suspicious causes. The neighborhood crime, an unexpected visit from her daughter and two grand babies, and her daughter's disappearance cause Eugeena to enlist the help of her neighbors to solve two mysteries at once. These two traumatic events make Eugeena reflect on her past relationships with Mary (the neighbor) and Leesa (her daughter), and how things turned sour with both of them.

This is a cozy mystery, so it's not too graphic, grisly or preachy. If you're looking for a low-stress, quick mystery read with a hint of Southern, then I would recommend this book to you.

Neighborhood Watch or just a nosey old ladies? I say both, Eugeena Patterson retired school teacher is organizing a neighborhood association and during this time she finds the body of one her neighbors that she has not spoken to in a while, she then becomes detective Patterson with the help of her neighbor Amos Jones, Eugeena is determined to find out who killed her neighbor.

I enjoyed Deep Fried Secrets, it is a nice twist on Christian Fiction mixed with mystery and suspense. Retired little old ladies are the best people for neighborhood watch they see and hear everything and do not mind asking questions that they want to know the answer too, I cannot wait to see what else Eugeena Patterson is up too.

I enjoyed Mrs. Eugeena Patterson. She was head of the Sugar Creek neighborhood watch and turns into an amateur sleuth after a neighbor turns up dead. It was a quick read and because it was a mystery I would’ve liked more a-ha, gotcha moments. There weren’t enough bread crumbs that came with the loaf in the end. But, I’m looking forward to the next in the series because I’ve grown to love Mrs. Eugeena.

A funny mystery story narrated from an older woman's perspective. A murder mystery that isn't overly gruesome. The book is similar to the television series, "Murder She Wrote," but this time it's in a middle-class neighborhood that has seen its ups and downs. A simple read with a simple plot; Clean for any bookclubs to read.

Short, snappy and so much fun! Eugeena is a hoot -- and I loved the way she continually calls on the Lord whether the appeal is heartfelt or exasperated. And when her Mama Bear acts up, it's best to get well out of the way (even if she might want to do some harm to the child in question herself!) Equal parts humour and heartwarming. Family drama gets equal billing with the murder mystery and I enjoyed both immensely. I'd like to be an honorary member of the Patterson family! As to the mystery...I thought I had it figured out, but I was wrong!!!!! So very, very, very wrong. I'd entertained several suspects seriously but perhaps Eugeena's sharp wit and pithy comments interfered with my armchair sleuthing spidey senses! At least, that's the story I'm sticking with!

I listened to the audible version of this book and absolutely LOVED it! Sharell Palmer brought Eugeena to life. Her narration really enhanced my 'reading' experience.

I was in the mood for a cozy mystery and it fit the bill. This was my book club's July 2021 pick. It was short but I felt there were too many plots and subplots and I didn't get a resolution. I get some carrots that needed to be dangled because this is book one of a series. There were a BUNCH of grammatical errors that put a damper on the flow. Editing matters!

Eugeena Patterson is a 59-year-old retired teacher and I mention her age because the author wrote this character as if she was 89 instead of 59. This woman was nosy and God-fearing which is a recipe for disaster. Eugeena's friend is murdered and she sets out to find the murderer and in the midst of this tragedy, her daughter drops off two kids at her house and disappears. The dynamic between Eugeena and her daughter Leesa could have been a book all on its own.

I am intrigued enough to continue with the series and I hope the writing is more developed as the series progresses.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Ms. Eugeena reminds me of my mother so I was really laughing through most of the story. Her character is delightful and I really liked the developing romance between her and Amos. I expected more to be revealed for Crystal’s character. Perhaps that’ll come out in one of the other books in the series. This was a quick, engaging summer read and I cannot wait to dive into Book #2.

I liked the world building and the plot which involved a retiree widow solving a crime that occurred in her neighbourhood. However, this has too much of a godly flavour for my liking. So, I don't think I will read the rest of the series. But for those who enjoy such fiction, this would definitely be enjoyable.

Great Mystery!

Tyora really grabbed my attention in this Christian mystery. I enjoyed how the plot took place in a community where everyone knew one another. Each character seemed to have different qualities, issues and secrets going on in their life's. The main character, Eugeena Patterson, was not only a God-fearing woman, but a determined woman who never gave up on the murder of Mary, disappearance of her daughter, Leesa, and the assault on Louise. Putting her life in danger and with the help of Amos and four-legged pooch, Porgy, Eugeena solved the case. Great book...truly recommend reading if you have a love for murder mysteries.

This book is full of suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat . Eugenia is a witty women with spunk . I love her spunk and how she kept it real lol I hope there is a future for her and Amos because they make a good couple . Lisa condition is not one that’s talked about enough and it’s a real issue . The lesson learned was to be careful of the motives of others .

A new favorite amateur sleuth!

When widowed Eugeena's neighborhood becomes the background for a murder, this Neighborhood Watch leader, swings into action! With a new neighbor who is a retired homicide detective, a best friend who lives next door and a rescued Corgi named Porgy, Eugeena is determined to solve the crime. Especially since her missing daughter is the prime suspect!

I loved the character of Eugeena - strong, smart, kind and very relatable. I enjoyed her common sense approach to sleuthing - no running into danger for this smart woman! My favorite cozy mysteries have family at their core and I enjoyed reading about Eugeena's family, friends and neighbors. The mystery kept me reading and I loved the ending! The book was a delightful introduction to a sleuth I want to read more about!

I can't wait to read the next book!
