Continuing with two characters mentioned in the previous book, this story developed in a somewhat unexpected direction. Which is exactly why I liked it a lot! But more than explaining what was going on with Acerith in the previous book, this story also introduces his species, the Venians, in more detail and they have some fascinating cultural and biological traits which come in very handy in this book. Jeremy, you might remember, is the guy whom Camden saw running just before he was stolen by the slave traders; as expected, he also would have died in the explosion but was "saved" to be auctioned off as a slave instead.
Jeremy's new master is not a benevolent alien at all. In fact, he is callous and cruel, and Jeremy pretty much expects to die at some point soon, since he refuses to submit to the being he calls "the Pig". Jeremy is also very selfless: when a baby needs rescuing, he doesn’t hesitate and run. As he is being hunted and eventually runs into Acerith, he discovers some really interesting things about himself, how he sees the world, and what special abilities the baby seems to have.
Acerith was a bit of a mysterious figure in the previous book, and we finally find out more about his history (pretty grim – his father is out to kill him), and his species. He has some mental abilities that come in very handy, but most fascinating were some of the physical changes he goes through in order to be able to help taking care of the baby. He struggles with them at first, unsure what it means for him as a man, but that only makes the whole situation more interesting.
Firmly in the genderbending arena, this book will not be for everyone. I think it is a fascinating look at how we see the roles that parents play and how much we link them to gender. This story proves there is no real need for this way of thinking, and while I didn’t like the terminology used in all cases, the main point of the story is very clear. No matter what gender they are, when becoming parents, these characters take on the characteristics most needed to ensure their baby has a good chance of survival. How I wish humans on Earth could all see this the same way!
If you like stories about unusual aliens, if you enjoy stories about men who face death and in that process learn to pull together, and if you're looking for a hot story with some fascinating gender bending and a challenge to traditional role models, you will probably like this story as much as I did.

Wow! Very unlike the other books. I liked the dog characters but I like dogs so go figure.

แล้วก็สรุปได้ว่า ควรอย่างยิ่งที่จะต้องอ่านตามลำดับไป ตามลิสต์นี้ https://www.goodreads.com/series/8998...
จริงๆอ่านเดี่ยวๆก็อาจจะพอเข้าใจได้นะคะ แต่ถ้าอ่านตามลำดับ มันจะมีคัวละครบางตัวที่ออกมายั่วให้เราสนใจอยากอ่านเรื่องของเขา พออ่านไปถึงเล่มนั้นจริงๆจะรู้สึกดีมาก
เอาจริงๆซีรีส์นี้เราชอบทุกเล่ม แค่มากน้อยต่างกันเท่านั้นเอง
เราว่ามันสั้นดี อ่านง่าย มีเรื่องมีราวในตัวเล่มเอง แล้วก็มีพล็อตหลักที่เชื่อมกันแบบลงตัว
ที่ชอบมากๆอีกอย่างคือ เอเลี่ยนมีความเป็นเอเลี่ยน แล้วก็หลากหลายทางกายภาพและวัฒนธรรมมากๆ

This is another that is restoring my faith in this series!! Totally loved it! This couple is unique, introduces new species, and is in no way typical of the 'norm'.
Have to admit I was a bit nervous when finding out we have Acerith going after Jeremy, Carver's fellow death by explosion victim. What we get is 3 different species becoming a family, with a baby pulling them together. Upon discovering all the attributes that makes up Acerith (some details glossed over in previous book) and proves that he is in fact male (hidden delights that come out with sexual excitement) and learning what his secret hinted at to Carver, we see him connect with Jeremy, human and a newborn other species baby.
Acerith and Jeremy, with just a bit of rocky start to trusting each other, bond with baby Jerith and each other. What is remarkable is that Acerith and Jeremy both start to change.. due to bonding? possibly in part to a remarkable little alien boy with unexplored mental capacities? Acerith actually becomes able to breastfeed the baby. The author doesn't push the boundaries too far to make it too feminine. His breasts enlarge just a little and produce milk for baby. Also some hormonal stuff pops up.. and his first time being penetrated.. all of which causes him to question what he's turning into.. a female?? Jeremy, previously strictly bottom boy, becomes more masculine to be more of a protector and takes on some of Acerith's attributes with a human twist.
Between the uncertain changes the bonding has thrust upon them, and running from Jeremy's 'owner' Acerith's bounty hunters and caring for an intelligent fast growing newborn makes for an interesting ride. I found this to be refreshing and a boundary pushing book that I'm sure will get mixed reviews over the breastfeeding and becoming more womanlike.

Just a quick note on this particular book of the series:
The series have been pretty good for me so far, given that I like a) the creativity of the aliens involved and b) the writing is a small cut above the usual Siren fare.
The problem with this book though, is that the first two chapters were all flashback, and not just flashback, but badly written flashback. It reads like the beginning of a new episode: "Previously in the Sold! series..." and then it goes on forever.
This is awful for two reasons. One: People who are new to the series and decided to jump into this book first, or who skipped Book 8, are going to have NO idea what the hell is happening because the explanation skips about as much as it explains. Two: It's a terrible narration, consisting of telling, telling, and more telling. If it wasn't that I've always liked this series I would have quit at Chapter 2.
The rest though, is excellent. We have got a lovely alien that continues this series' tradition of producing unique aliens that are more than just humans dipped in purple body paint. That is its highest achievement, yessir.

There was less humor in this than in the previous stories (considering the MC's were running for their lives). Sex scenes seem to be requirement in Siren books and I am OK with that but I felt Acerith and Jeremy were mated in an inappropriate time and place. They were on the run and they had Jerith with them. . Other than that detail, I found the rest of the story enjoyable. The ending was super fluffy. Fush made me smile and I find myself wanting to know more about the Widdles.

This is definitely a gender bending book. Dont get too comfortable in the roles of the MCs bc they change rapidly and repeatedly. Id say this book is more like a 3.5. It was nice to experience a new alien race and learn about a few others in the process.
The epilogue was completely unnecessary and could be removed.
There was also a couple references about a character not being as "manly" as he could have been simply because he had never been on the giving end during sex. I found that a little offensive. There are many ways to describe what manly means and sexual preferences shouldnt be involved.
All in all pretty good. Fairly quick read.

I really liked the added creation of a family in this story. The adaptability of each member to the other also made this book very unique in the series, opening the door to other possibilities.
(On a side note, I think the Widdles are my new favorite species.)

This book was not my kind of book. The sexual changes didn't sit well to me... I love this serie, but could skip this book easily.

Enjoyable story. Loved Acerith's biology. I think there was more to the story, but I will end up re-reading it anyway.
