Izzy the Inventor

Rate this book
Izzy is a clumsy young prehistoric bird still trying to figure out the whole flying thing. Growing tired of the other archaeopteryxes laughing at her, she decides to go practice near the caves where the people live. The people laugh at first too, but soon they notice that each of Izzy's failed flights leads to a wonderful new invention or discovery.

Cave paintings, fire, even the wheel—all are results of Izzy's clumsiness coupled with her determination to fly. Will Izzy ever learn to fly like the other birds, or will she decide it's okay to be different?

There’s only one way to find out: join Izzy in her prehistoric adventure in this edition of the color-illustrated Bird Brain Books series for children 4-8 years old.

My Noah Pet got two nasty trampoline burns on his feet earlier today and was feeling very sorry for himself so I decided to tuck him into my bed and read him a story. Of course while trying to decide which story to read I remembered that I promised my friend Emlyn that I would read her Izzy book AGES ago and that I am a terrible terrible terrible friend for forgetting. I hauled it out and settled to cuddle with my little man. Of course he was not impressed...but that is because he was feeling massively sorry for himself and more interested in sulking that stories, so I just read it to myself and let him fall asleep without being offended.

Izzy is a sweet little book about a bird who accidentally invents a bunch of things while she is trying to teach herself how to fly. What I loved most about this book was the message that firstly, even if you don't succeed in the beginning, you should try and try again until you get the results that you want. Secondly, even though you don't always get the results that you want, trying leads to all sorts of other wonderful things. A great read for the little ones!

Izzy is my newest character friend that I love! Chand has crafted a delightful story that is so fun to read, and thrilling that I wanted more. I mean that, I want more Izzy books. The character is so sweet and smart you cannot help but fall in love with her. One of the many fine Bird Brain series this ranks as my favorite, with Courtney Saves Christmas (A Bird Brain Book) coming in a very close second.
Please parents buy this book, read this to your young ones and enjoy this treasure. I would also highly recommend this series as a whole to all libraries in the USA, and everywhere. These books are meant to be shared and loved by kids of all ages, and bird lovers alike.

Another sweet bird book -- this time going back in time. A little bit educational, a lot of fun, and illustrated beautifully. Five year old twins (girl and boy) really enjoyed it!

"Can we read more?" Was all I got this time. Lol. I liked the book. Thought it was funny. I'm guessing since she wants to read more, she did too.

After reading this, I spent a few hours contemplating and here's what I've got:

Age: I would recommend this for 3-6, personally (7 in some cases, but hey . . . I'm 30, and I liked it).

Art: I find the art to be clean and to the point. The pictures are well done and not too overwhelming, which makes it a more involved read for the younger mind because they don't get lost in a chaotic design.

Character: I'm really enjoying Emlyn Chand's use of birds (this is my recommendation to check out the other Bird Brain Books). Izzy is a strong character that I think a lot of children (adults, too, sometimes!) need to meet. It's important to teach someone that one can overcome, that there is more than one way to get things done.

Story/plot/setting: With short, easy sentences, this is a breeze to go through. There are a handful of lessons hiding in here - the two I listed with character portion above, plus more. I could really pick it apart and find well over seven solid lessons. The setting is a nice change from many stories. I also find that many children tend to like dinosaurs.

Other: I really like how this book is constructed. I think it's a beautiful thing the author did at the beginning, announcing her intentions with the caveman and the wooly mammoth. It wasn't me just being forced into another kids story, being expected to naturally suspend disbelief. I was guided and told why before I would ever have to question, which actually allowed me to enjoy the story even more.

Concern: I really only had one concern and it was with the name Archaeopteryx. I had to look up how this was pronounced to be sure. I think this could have been remedied with a simple speech key at the beginning (AR-kee-OP-tər-iks - thanks wiki!), but maybe there is a lesson in this, too. Maybe this is a good spot for the reader to do the old fashioned thing and look up the word!

First off, a disclaimer, I work for Novel Publicity. So no stars, but I will really tell you what I think of this book, and probably a small rant about why I like Evolved Publishing.

The formatting is always great (Both print & ebook). I often see these books before they're in their final versions, and get a chance to point things out like hung lines, and bad page breaks. The final presentation for all of these, is always really professional. Izzy is no exception. Whether chapter books for the young reader, a novel, or a children's book. I haven't been disappointed yet.

Does that mean I LOVE everything, every author from Evolved does?

NO.

It does mean that I can appreciate that all their books are well edited, and have a target audience. Of course, I'm not the audience for everything, but I am willing to give anything a try.

Izzy was no different.

I've read lots of Emlyn Chand's children's books, and this one had by far the most well developed story line. It's an ugly duckling, meets prehistoric bird tale. It's a quick easy read, and by the end you're in love with Izzy. Izzy also happens to teach you a lesson while you're at it.

Why would I recommend this book to kids? Simple enough - my niece loved it. She likes this illustrations, and actually listened to the entire story. She's 1, and yes, I know that's a little young, but she really does love books. She's mean to the ones she doesn't like, and has her favorites. This and 'I'd rather be riding my bike' are two that keep her entertained from start to finish.

Disclaimer: It may also be the crazy voices myself or my mom makes up that keep her entertained.

Try it out - you'll never know how great it is until you pick it up and share it with a little one you love.

If Davey the Detective is my favorite of the Bird Brain books that I've read so far Izzy the Inventor would be my least favorite. Don't get me wrong - it is still a good book. For some reason it just didn't grab me as much as the other ones have.

Initially my daughter wanted to skip the section that tells all about Izzy the archaeopteryx as a real animal. At four she didn't really care about the historical facts and just wanted to get into the story. Older kids might be more interested in that section.

I think one of my difficulties in reading this out loud to my daughter was simply that the word archaeopteryx tripped me up every time! As an adult reading the book, I'm pretty sure I was over thinking the story as well. I didn't understand why Izzy's mom would simply abandon her when she was having difficulty flying or how the caveman could suddenly come up with an invention to help her fly.

My daughter seems to enjoy the story and looking at the pictures, although I don't think she has asked for this one as often as the other Bird Brain books we own.

I say give this one a shot and see what you think as this is probably just a case of my not being quite the right reader for this story.

Learning to fly leads to fun discoveries

This book was amazing because Izzy the bird helped the caveman without knowing it and he helped her to learn to fly. Even though some of this stuff couldn’t have really happened the story was fun to read. Izzy’s accidents became inventions that really helped the caveman. All the ways that Izzy tried to fly were so funny but didn’t work really well. When she hurt herself she found out the caveman was really friendly, caring and helpful. After everything she did to fly home, Izzy decided to move in with her caveman friend. This story was about learning to keep trying and not give up. Izzy really grew up while learning to fly. ~ Alyssa, age 10.

Izzy the Inventor is an enjoyable read. The illustrations are great and entertaining as well for the young reader. We certainly enjoyed reading about Izzy’s antics as she learned to fly back to her nest only to find a new friend and decide to move away from her family in the end. I would recommend this books especially as a read-aloud for the very young reader and appropriate for the early reader on their own. Although complex dinosaur names are introduced at the very beginning in the introduction the rest of the book is easily read.

Izzy hatches from her egg along with two siblings to a new world and a loving mama archaeopteryx. When the time comes for her and her siblings to learn to fly, she falls instead of flying and is told to climb back to the nest on her own if she expects dinner and to try flying again the next day.

Unable to reach the nest, Izzy snuggles in a cave before she’s disturbed by a caveman coming back with berries to eat. Through a serious of mishaps she inspires the caveman to invent cave painting, fire, and a flying machine. The latter was the caveman’s way of helping his new friend learn to fly after seeing she wouldn’t give up trying.

The thing that stood out for me in this was the combination of multiple historical events in a lesson about never giving up while chasing one’s dreams and the power of working together. Without the caveman, Izzy may not have learned to fly and without Izzy, the caveman wouldn’t have discovered his talent for creating.

A wonderful story, this is a perfect book to add to a child’s bookshelf.

Izzy The Inventor by Emlyn Chand is such a cute, charming, and sharp story. My son listened intently as I read him the book and enjoyed the pictures within. Izzy is an Archaeopteryxes or a bird, so not only are kids enjoying a fun story, but they are also learning. The Archaeopteryxes lived when Dinosaurs roamed the earth, which made this story that much more fun for my son because he loves Dinosaurs.

So if your kids love a story about a brave little bird who must learn to fly and then finds help in the most unexpected place, you and them are both going to really enjoy this one. It helps to teach kids to never give up and always keep trying.

I give Izzy The Inventor by Emlyn Chand 5 out of 5 courageous stars.

The latest installment in the Bird Brain books takes a different approach than the previous installments. Instead of focusing on birds that can be seen in almost any neighborhood or zoo, Chand decided to make a prehistoric bird her latest protagonist.

The story follows a baby Archaeopteryx as it learns to fly. Along the way, the bird accidentally discovers some big inventions and befriends a caveman who ultimately sets out to help her achieve her dream of learning to fly.

This story is ideal for any small child who likes prehistoric creatures. As with the others in the series, it is beautifully illustrated and teaches kids life lessons. I most enjoyed the fact that Chand included a diagram of the bird in question at the beginning and explained there were inaccuracies in the story. She also explained why she chose to deviate from the true history of the creatures. It gives a little something extra that parents, and older siblings, may also enjoy and learn from.

I was given an ARC for an honest review

I just love this series and Izzy has quickly become my favorite. Short sentences, clean graphics and delightful characters are sure to keep smiles on everyone's faces. Izzy has a problem, she is a flying dinosaur who can't fly. On her quest to learn to fly she accidentally invents some useful items that will help her new friend the caveman. Izzy's never give up attitude makes for some funny situations as she works on solving her problem. As with all the books in this series there are several underlying lessons hidden in the words but presented in a way that will teach your child something new every time they read it. As an adult we realize that Izzy's discoveries were pretty far fetched but the author points this out in the beginning of the story allowing us to be entertained right along with our child. This is a good series for every child / parent to read together.

LESSONS: PERSISTENCE & HANDI-CAPABLE

Izzy is an Archaeopteryx. I love that the book begins with an explanation of what an archaeopteryx was and the liberties that the author took in creating this story. This provided a little history and an understanding of literary license.

Izzy is persistent in her determination to learn to fly. In the process, she unwittingly teaches her friend the caveman how to paint, how to create fire for warmth, and the use of primitive wheels for transport. In return, he is able to assist Izzy in learning to fly.

Because Izzy uses the Caveman’s flying invention, this would be an excellent conversation starter for explaining the needs of some children (and adults) to use wheelchairs, white canes, or whatever other device your child may see someone using to improve their life.

Age Level: 3 – 8 Grade Level: P-2nd

Note: while I was given this book as a gifted copy, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

This is the first of Emlyn Chand's books I have had the pleasure of reading and I found this absolutely delightful. While archaeopteryx is a bit of a mouthful for me to say, that added delight and laughter as we read it aloud! Izzy is an absolute delight and one I found fun to read to my young audience.

The introduction explains what an archaeopteryx is and that, for the purposes of the story, they did NOT live at the same time as humans, but it was fun to pretend.

Izzy is struggling to fly like her brothers and ends up stuck on the ground. She runs into a human and the interactions are quite sweet. Eventually, he helps her in her quest to fly.

The illustrations were adorable and the story was sweet. This is definitely going to be recommended and read to the littles in my circles!

Izzy the Inventor is about a prehistoric bird who cannot seem to get the hang of flying. Little Izzy is sent from her next by her mother and is told they - her mother and brothers - will see her again when she can fly back up to the top of the cliff they live on.

Eager to learn and see her family once more, Izzy sets out on a journey to get her wings a-flappin. Along the way, she meets a caveman who scares her, although she seems to fascinate him. And when she accidentally discovers things the caveman didn't even know existed, he is inspired to help this little birdie.

I enjoyed Izzy the Inventor. The illustrations are sweet, and the story is really engaging and entertaining. Kids and adults of all ages will definitely like Izzy, as well as the other birds showcased in the Bird Brain series of books. They're all quite wonderful.

I rate Izzy the Inventor 5 stars.

First, I would like to thank Emlyn Chand for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

I really enjoyed how Emlyn Chand gave an introduction to what an Archaeopteryx is. Plus, there is an actual picture of the bird and the skeletal system pointing out the body parts. It is very educational for both children and adults (as I have never heard of this bird before). This lesson is important as they bird is an important part of Izzy the Inventor.

I liked how in each book that Emlyn writes there is a message to the story. Each reader might get their own message out of it. The message I got out of it is if you help someone they will surprise you return the favor when you least expect it. Just like in this story the caveman helped the Birdie learned to fly.

Izzy is a young archaeopteryxes who needs to learn to fly but has a few problems. To get back to her nest she will have to make some unusual friends and try new things but will she see her family again. I read this book with my 7yr old . This is the third book we have read in the Bird Brain series. My son loves dinosaurs which helps with these books. He loves these books with adventure and lovely plots filled with leasons to be learnt. He loves the illustrations that are fun and beautifully designed. This was another lovely book from a fantastic series. I would recommend this book to young children as they would make lovely bedtime stories for younger children and they are perfect for independent reading.

I read this book as part of a challenge I joined.

The first thing that really grabbed me about this book, was the information at the beginning. The author, while taking some liberties with the history of the 'bird' she's writing about, has also taken the time to describe the bird and note the differences in her story and the actual history of things.

The most profound lesson that I think kids will learn from Izzy is to never give up. If you want to succeed at something, you must just keep trying no matter how impossible the task seems. Izzy's struggles will help kids see that all is not lost if they can not accomplish what they attempt on the first try.

Elementary students from Kindergarten through third grade will certainly enjoy and benefit from this story.

This was my first Bird Brain book, and it was very enjoyable. I read this story to my neighbor’s son. It was interesting enough to keep his attention, but also showed an important message about facing your fears and not being afraid to fail. Izzy was a determined creature, and I really liked that she was a girl. I wish I had stories like this when my daughter was little. There aren’t enough kid’s books with smart, loveable characters like Izzy. I loved how she accidentally invented some pretty amazing things, and was able to find an unlikely ally in her adventures. The story reads well and has some teachable moments. I would highly recommend this story.

Izzy the Inventor was a wonderful children's book. Izzy is such a sweet and funny little bird that accidentally invents fire and painting. Izzy tries to fly like her brothers, but falls to the ground instead. Having no way back to her nest she stumbles upon a cave to sleep in for the night. She is woken up by a caveman who makes use of her accidental inventions and in turn the caveman helps her to fly. Absolutely adorable! The illustrations are amazing and the story is great. I loved it. I would definitely like to read more about Izzy.

Read and reviewed by my 9 yo lil dude. This was another one of my favorites cause it was about Izzy and how she helped her friend invent stuff. I liked this one because I am sort of an inventor myself. I make my cat kitty condos all the time out of boxes that my mom lets me have. Izzy showed me that its okay to be an inventor.

I loved this book. I found it to be original. First, my boys love dinosaurs, so anything in that time period is a hit. The fact that Izzy marched to the beat of her own drum was great. When Izzy and the caveman worked together, I really enjoyed that. I liked that they taught one another instead of fighting. My children found the invention funny and neat.
