Hearts In Darkness is one of those stories that touches your heart, makes you ponder and leaves a smile on your face for the rest of the day.
The novella begins with two people whose outward appearance is as different as night and day. Makenna is stylish, tailored, attractive, and well-groomed, albeit slightly frazzled. On the other hand, Caden is a nonconformist with tattoos, piercings, and a shaved head. Within seconds of Makenna entering an elevator that Caden was already in, the elevator stops, the lights go out, and the two are left together in the dark. Neither has had an opportunity to get more than a glimpse of the other. What ensues is a touching, emotional, and highly sensual connection between two people who find they admire each other and have much in common because they are not bound by preconceived notions that all too often blind us all.
The author had the ability to easily transport me into Makenna’s and Caden’s world. I loved their banter, their insecurities, their erotically charged chemistry, and their honesty. In short, I was highly invested in this book’s wonderful but complex characters and in their emotional and extremely sensual story.
I loved everything about this sweet but highly erotic book. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

"Wait! Can you please hold that?"
OMG I always use to hurry up when someone is coming my way to take the elevator with me. NOT ANYMORE!!! I use to say reading always teach me something. This little story taught me to wait for whoever is CUMing into the elevator. I have expectations now and I am so very ready for Caden!
Wait? You don’t know who Caden is? Let me compose myself. I am still… affected .
This book starts with lucky Makenna trying to catch the elevator where Caden is. She is a mysterious red head dressed very business-like. Caden is the gentleman who holds the door for her. And BOOM! They are trapped, the elevator stops and everything goes pitch black.
Interesting, huh?
What would you do in a situation like that when you don’t even know how your company looks like because you can’t see anything??? Would you reach for a stranger’s hand to find comfort?
I bought this book like ages ago and dammit I should have read this before! When I read the premise the first time I wasn’t 100% convinced but the author managed to put together a great story. Yes, it’s hot but it’s also sweet and dark and it hurts at times. Caden & Makenna didn’t have an easy life but they have found each other now and they seem to be pieces of the same puzzle.
Peace was not an emotion with which he was much familiar, but with Makenna, he had it. And he didn’t know how he’d ever give it up.
I just have one tiny complaint. Of course, if not, it wouldn’t be me! I wish the author

Wow! What a hot, fun, charming surprise this was!
Two strangers...a tattooed, pierced, skull trimmed, scarred hero who’s all rugged bad boy on the outside (think Zsadist look alike) and sweet, considerate, vulnerable teddy bear gentleman on the inside and a smart, funny, understanding, and genuine heroine...discover and explore a deep connection and explosive sexual attraction while stuck together in an elevator. The pitch-black darkness hides their physical imperfections and insecurities, which allows them to express themselves emotionally and achieve true intimacy without fear of rejection. But will their sizzling chemistry and soulful closeness remain once they’re back in the light?
Caden and Makenna are delightful characters, and the author does a wonderful job, despite the shorter length, depicting a convincing attachment between them. It’s a great story that I really enjoyed, especially yummy, sweet Caden! 5 stars!
And the studtastic cover hunk is a perfect match for Caden! *fans self*

Opening Line: " Wait! Can you please hold that?"
Ah Caden, my new literary boyfriend, how I would love to get stuck in an elevator with you. Pierced, tattooed, skull trimmed and hitting all my Zsadist fantasy buttons (gah) this bad boy had me in bits from page one. He’s also kind, insecure, lonely and somewhat tortured. Yup he's delicious.
Wow, this was a fantastic little read that I can see myself coming back to again soon. Short, sexy and just oh so good. The only thing that could have made this any better would have been a couple hundred more pages. Although in saying that this is perfectly complete in terms of story and unlike most novellas I never felt that our couple’s sexy time was contrived or rushed. I just enjoyed them so much I wanted more. Always the sign of a great story.
Makenna as our lucky heroine wasn’t quite what I was expecting; despite her polished appearance and upper class job she had just as many insecurities as Caden did. Will he like what I look like? Will he think I’m homely? Will he want to see me again? This is what every girl thinks and made her relatable and much easier to insert myself into her psyche for fantasy purposes later on.
One of the things I really enjoyed here was how the author gave us the exact same moment from both POV’s. Backtracking a conversation or action so that we could get the other persons internal thoughts and reactions to it. I’ve rarely seen this done before and it was awesome to get both sides. I mean how often are you left wondering how he/she feels and you’re stuck in the wrong head?
One of my other favourite moments (and this is spoilery) is when Makenna finally gets to see Caden. She exclaims “You’re freaking gorgeous.” I loved this because up until the lights went on we (the readers) didn’t really know what he looked like either. Of course looks are always subjective but I had thought this was going to be beauty and the beast type story, whereas it was more like if The Voice did a dating show. (LOL that made me laugh)Cheers

This wasn’t like xxx or anything, it was sexy though. Caden and Mckena meet in an elevator, the chemistry was perfect between them. The sparks flew. Caden definitely has a bad boy look, while she has a polished pit together look. Caden definitely has his issues, while they both have experienced loss. Their connection is fast, but it seems to be the norm in a lot of books. It was a quick read, that I enjoyed.

Meeting in the dark...
This was a re-read for me and I loved it as much as the first time I read it. Hearts in Darkness is an intense, thoughtful and beautifully put together story served up in a little package. I have only read one other short story that left me so thoroughly entertained.
Makenna had a rough day that got even worse when her phone broke and she realised that the battery had fallen out. Caden had just signed the final papers after his Dad had passed. He holds the lift for her. He noticed her beautiful red hair and she noticed a sexy tattoo. That was all...and then there was darkness.
Their time together in the lift gives them the opportunity to know each other without the pressures and judgments based on looks. Both are concerned that something in their looks would put the other off. How amazing that they were given this opportunity. Unfortunately as a society, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and others based purely on looks. This book took that away. Lucky for them, they liked the packaging too.
This was a very HOT read and left me with a big smile on my face. This is a perfect example of what a short story should be.

This is how you write an erotic short story!
Wow. This little gem had me hooked from the start. Harried red haired young businesswoman Makenna is having a rough day where everything seems to be going wrong. Luckily a good Samaritan (with a tattooed hand) is holding the elevator door open for her... no sooner does the door close and before Makenna can get a clear look at her "Good Sam", the elevator shudders to a halt and the lights go out. Uh-oh. It just so happens that the tattooed stranger (an EMT named Caden) is claustrophobic and has a fear of dark places...What will happen when these two strangers are trapped for who knows how long?
Caden...
Makenna...
I loved it! Usually with this premise it's the hero who has to take care of and calm the heroine down, so I loved that this was all switched around. I love me a dangerous-looking hero (Caden was pierced, scarred, and tattooed) who's a real softie inside. I love when the hero has some emotional issues that the heroine can help him overcome. I love a vulnerable hero, who's unsure of his attractiveness! Caden was all this! And I loved Makenna too. She was smart, funny, and understanding, and just a bit unsure of herself too. I loved how the author threw them together in this situation, but had them really get to know one another first (loved the dialogue) before they let the mutual attraction take over. And I like how they were attracted to each other without either having a clear picture of what the other looked like. Loved how the sexual tension built and built before we got the big payoff--super steamy!
What would've made this erotic quickie perfect? An epilogue! Oh where oh where was the epilogue?? I'm dying to know what happened with these two! Oh well, I guess if your readers are left begging for more, you've written a winner. I hope one day Laura Kaye does us a favor and revisits these characters--there's so much more I'd like to know! 4 1/2 stars

Re-read June 9th 2021. Can't believe I read this the first time almost 10 years ago! I re-read after hearing Ms. Kaye is coming out with a new short story to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the publishing of Hearts in Darkness. I loved it the first time and wanted to see how this novella held up so many years later. Just as good as I remembered! Captures and holds your attention right away! Forced proximity troupe done so well!

Mackenna has had a long day and can think of nothing better than going home and having a big glass of wine. She's about to miss the elevator and being a nice guy, Caden holds the door for her. Mackenna, preoccupied with holding all of her bags and cell phone, only catches a glimpse of this guy's tattooed arm before the power goes out and the elevator stops. Caden for his part doesn't see anything of Mackenna except for her long red hair, and professional grey suit.
So now they are stuck in the elevator together, which is bad news for Caden. He is claustrophobic and is having a hard time until Mackenna starts talking to him. They start playing twenty-questions and talk about everything, and from there the attraction starts to build.
This story was a lot of fun, a quick read, and boy was there a lot of heat ! It is only 112 pages and the pages just flew by. I loved how these two got to know each other and how sight unseen they were attracted. This is my second time reading this (I was reading something else and got distracted!) and I really, really liked it, so I felt I should come back and give it a proper review!

Can you imagine being stuck in the dark, in an elevator, with a complete stranger? What if they're not a good person? What if they stink? Makenna and Caden were fortunate to be stuck with one other. They learned about each other with no preconceptions. No distractions. No worrying if the other person was attractive or if they found you attractive. No wondering if they said too much. They grew close, closer than most people, in the span of hours. Makenna knew more about Caden than she knew about most people in her life. Caden grew attached to Makenna in a way he couldn't be to anyone else.
I really enjoyed this story. I liked it so much, from beginning to end, that I don't even feel it necessary to read the next book in this duet. I probably will because it will give me more of these characters and the future that they have together, but I don't need to. This author captured such a unique experience in a wonderfully sweet way. I couldn't help but be captivated by this story.
Caden couldn't remember the last time he'd had such an easy conversation or the last time he'd laughed or even smiled so much.
I really enjoyed this story. I liked it so much, from beginning to end, that I don't even feel it necessary to read the next book in this duet. I probably will because it will give me more of these characters and the future that they have together, but I don't need to. This author captured such a unique experience in a wonderfully sweet way. I couldn't help but be captivated by this story.

This short story was a fast-paced, steamy as well as hot read. The characters were complex and well-developed. Even though it's only a novella there was quite a lot of depth to be found. Also, the sexual tension in the dark was so palpable and well-written. Amazing what an author can bring to life with such a little read.
Caden and Makenna were spending some time in darkness and came back to the light...

Reread February 6, 2016: changed rating from 4.5 to 4; wanted to reread it before I read the next book!
Not normally a novella fan and didn't have high expectations, but ended up *loving* it (4.5 stars)
I absolutely loved this novella (and like most, only wish it was longer!). Short romances almost invariably get bad ratings from me, because I'm unable to believe any lasting connection, but in this case I had no trouble with that. I found the idea of this new relationship fully believable and wholly enjoyable - and much sweeter than I expected.
{ Hero }
Caden was such a fantastic hero. He's big and buff, tattooed, has piercings and a shaved head - if you saw him walking towards you in a dark alley you'd think twice about staying there - however he's one of those absolutely teddy bear heroes that's gruff on the outside but a softie inside (he works as an EMT). A lot of times those types of heroes are gruff to everyone until the heroine breaks him down, but here Caden's only "gruffness" is really only his outer appearance. He's actually quiet and somewhat shy, and I loved how sometimes he was tentative and vulnerable, not sure how he should act with her or how far to go, and other times he was so passionate and possessive. From the beginning he's very sweet and kind towards Makenna, which I loved.
{ Heroine }
Makenna was a great heroine, but I actually didn't feel like I knew her as well as I did Caden by the end of the book. When we're with Caden's POV, I feel like we get much more insight into his personality, thoughts, and insecurities than we do for Makenna when we're with her POV. I liked her though, and I'm often tougher on heroines than heroes. She's hard-working, intelligent, sweet, and has a good sense of humor. She's used to being considered one of the guys and while not supremely confident about her attractions, she's definitely not insecure - which from other people's comments/shelving had been what I was expecting.
{ The Romance }
Honestly, I was not going into this with high expectations. I thought I would probably find the whole thing somewhat sleazy if these two people who don't know one another get stuck in a dark elevator with each other and then have sex (for those worried about this as well: ). Basically, I wasn't sure how much of a "romance" this would actually be, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Normally I hate - hate! - instant attraction, one night stand romances, etc., but none of that felt like it was part of this story.
There is definite chemistry between the two and Kaye writes wonderful sexual tension, but I felt like they did get to know one another and certainly had an emotional/intellectual connection as well; I loved the conversation between them and their back and forth banter. They can't see one another, so while they're intrigued by the little they did notice about one another before the lights went out (her red hair, his tattoos), that's not the basis of how they start their relationship. I think the fact that they're in the dark allows both of them to let their guard down from the beginning much more than they might otherwise. It also allows them to look beyond the outer appearance - Caden, the big, scary guy and Makenna, the boring accountant.
{ Criticisms }
One of the most annoying things throughout the book was that there were no space breaks between POV transitions. It made it so that each time the POV switched I wouldn't really realize it until the end of the first or second paragraph; minor complaint, but since it could have been so easily fixed it bugged me all the more. Also didn't like how the transitions would rehash what had just happened but from the other character's POV. Other than that, I had a little eye-rolling towards the end when Makenna offers her interpretation of what Caden uses his tattoos for and he has this shocked oh-my-god-this-woman-can-see-right-into-my-soul reaction. Again, minor, but this book was so great I don't have any major complaints to share!
{ Bottom Line }
As unusual as the circumstances of them meeting are, the entire encounter - and what follows - felt realistic, as if I could meet these two people and completely believe that they met that way and were still together. Their conversations were cute and funny, their thoughts and feelings sweet, and their chemistry was sizzling. All in all, a perfect novella and one I am so glad that I bought! Laura Kaye is a brand new author whom I hadn't heard of before, but I will now definitely be keeping my eyes out for her future work.

Short romances almost invariably get bad ratings from me, because I'm unable to believe any lasting connection, but in this case I had no trouble with that. I found the idea of this new relationship fully believable and wholly enjoyable - and much sweeter than I expected.
{ Hero }
Caden was such a fantastic hero. He's big and buff, tattooed, has piercings and a shaved head - if you saw him walking towards you in a dark alley you'd think twice about staying there - however he's one of those absolutely teddy bear heroes that's gruff on the outside but a softie inside (he works as an EMT). A lot of times those types of heroes are gruff to everyone until the heroine breaks him down, but here Caden's only "gruffness" is really only his outer appearance. He's actually quiet and somewhat shy, and I loved how sometimes he was tentative and vulnerable, not sure how he should act with her or how far to go, and other times he was so passionate and possessive. From the beginning he's very sweet and kind towards Makenna, which I loved.
{ Heroine }
Makenna was a great heroine, but I actually didn't feel like I knew her as well as I did Caden by the end of the book. When we're with Caden's POV, I feel like we get much more insight into his personality, thoughts, and insecurities than we do for Makenna when we're with her POV. I liked her though, and I'm often tougher on heroines than heroes. She's hard-working, intelligent, sweet, and has a good sense of humor. She's used to being considered one of the guys and while not supremely confident about her attractions, she's definitely not insecure - which from other people's comments/shelving had been what I was expecting.
{ The Romance }
Honestly, I was not going into this with high expectations. I thought I would probably find the whole thing somewhat sleazy if these two people who don't know one another get stuck in a dark elevator with each other and then have sex (for those worried about this as well: ). Basically, I wasn't sure how much of a "romance" this would actually be, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Normally I hate - hate! - instant attraction, one night stand romances, etc., but none of that felt like it was part of this story.
There is definite chemistry between the two and Kaye writes wonderful sexual tension, but I felt like they did get to know one another and certainly had an emotional/intellectual connection as well; I loved the conversation between them and their back and forth banter. They can't see one another, so while they're intrigued by the little they did notice about one another before the lights went out (her red hair, his tattoos), that's not the basis of how they start their relationship. I think the fact that they're in the dark allows both of them to let their guard down from the beginning much more than they might otherwise. It also allows them to look beyond the outer appearance - Caden, the big, scary guy and Makenna, the boring accountant.
{ Criticisms }
One of the most annoying things throughout the book was that there were no space breaks between POV transitions. It made it so that each time the POV switched I wouldn't really realize it until the end of the first or second paragraph; minor complaint, but since it could have been so easily fixed it bugged me all the more. Also didn't like how the transitions would rehash what had just happened but from the other character's POV. Other than that, I had a little eye-rolling towards the end when Makenna offers her interpretation of what Caden uses his tattoos for and he has this shocked oh-my-god-this-woman-can-see-right-into-my-soul reaction. Again, minor, but this book was so great I don't have any major complaints to share!
{ Bottom Line }
As unusual as the circumstances of them meeting are, the entire encounter - and what follows - felt realistic, as if I could meet these two people and completely believe that they met that way and were still together. Their conversations were cute and funny, their thoughts and feelings sweet, and their chemistry was sizzling. All in all, a perfect novella and one I am so glad that I bought! Laura Kaye is a brand new author whom I hadn't heard of before, but I will now definitely be keeping my eyes out for her future work.

Joint review for Heart in Darkness (re-read) & Love in the Light.

We decided to re-read Hearts in Darkness as we read it back in 2011 pre-blog days therefore never reviewed this 5 star read. Also it’s one of our favourite stories as well as couples so we wanted the full impact. This sequel has been one we’ve wished for with all our hearts as we’ve never forgotten Caden and Makenna. We wanted to hear what happened after that fateful day they ended up stuck together in an elevator for four hours. We wanted that intensity and emotionally laden moment back.
‘The darkness combined with the intensity of their connection made her feel like nothing else existed in the world. She’d never experienced this kind of passion before – at least not from a kiss alone.’
Two strangers – a brief glimpse before they’re plunged into darkness. A man with demons after a tragic childhood, a woman with a huge heart who loves with everything she has. It was intense, it was all encompassing. It was where two souls found each other knowing they were home. Two opposites in almost every way yet they fit perfectly!
‘What Caden did mattered to a lot of people. Which meant that he mattered, whether he felt it or not.’
We just loved being back with Makenna and Caden, experiencing that first moment they connected and felt every emotion and passion once more before diving straight into Love in the Light.
‘She didn’t love him despite of all his issues, she loved him because of them. Or, rather, because they were part of who he was. And she loved who he was. With everything she had.’
Makenna is one of our favourite heroines out there. She’s settled and happy in life despite losing her mother at an early age. Her protective brothers and her loving Father make her life complete and with a strong and mature head on her shoulders she embraces her heart and wants knowing it’s Caden she wants and desires despite what may prove to be a bumpy ride. She’s in it one hundred percent and she never wavers.
‘Hey, lightening, let me show you what I really care about so you know where to strike next.’
We have to say that we fell even more in love with our feisty red head in this sequel. She showed incredible compassion, trust, understanding and above all others – love.
“Then it’s you and me, ‘til the end. In the darkness and in the light.”
Caden…what can we say, he was one of our first book boyfriends as we fell for this beautiful damaged man who’d turned his life around but still wasn’t complete nor at peace with himself after the trauma and tragedy he’s been through at such an early age. We wholeheartedly love him and fancy the bloody pants off of this man. In Makenna’s words:
“You are so freaking gorgeous and so smoking hot that you make my mouth water and my panties melt. Every time I see you.”
This was fundamentally his story as he comes to terms with his past and makes peace with it realising his own worth and role in life.
‘He’d stopped trusting her…not to abandon him….He’d made his own worst fears come true.’
Reading these two books together was really quite an emotional journey despite what we already knew. Laura Kaye really wrote something so very special here that will stay in our loving book hearts forever. We highly recommend you pick these up if you’ve not already met our Caden and Makenna. You will never regret this journey full of emotion, passion, twists and inspirational moments.

Funny and strong heroine? Check
Chemistry? Hell yeah!
It is a short read but I don't think it needed to be longer it was just perfect.
I know what your thinking, 2 strangers stuck in an elevator for a whole book and it's pitch black, let me guess they have sex?
That would be a NO.
Well there is Sex in it but there is more to it as well.
Just read it peeps!
You won't be disappointed.

This book was flippin' lovely! Sexy, tragic, heartbreaking, romantic, sensual. (I could go on).
I thought my heart was going to come right out of my chest, how the author managed to captivate me so utterly and quickly in this short read I have no idea.
I felt so connected with both characters straightaway, this short read is a Diamond and not one to be missed.

There are so many things I love about this novella. I think first and foremost is the fact that two people, Caden and Mackenna, form a bond - a strong, sizzling connection - without really setting eyes on each other. Like the quote above says, it just speaks to the beauty of the mind and heart to find love without looks to distort the reality.
This is also one hot read. This is seriously a sexual fantasy come true. Imagine being stuck in an elevator for hours in the dark with a big, muscular man who speaks his mind, is gentle with his ways, sweet with his words and smells delicious...*shakes my head and sighs* sorry, back to my review...Their time trapped in the elevator is one utterly mouthwatering (among other things) tease!!

2.5(ish) This one is pretty hard to rate...
On one hand, it was pretty hot, for a short read. The idea wasn't too bad and well, I did read it fast (though it's 100 pages and I skipped a few stuff, so there is that...).
On the other hand, it was pretty boring. I expected a lot more from this read (it has wonderful reviews!), wanted to be more engaged and, well, I got kinda lost after a while. I wasn't curious about their stories and don't want to see what happens next (thank God it's only 100 pages long or it might have been a DNF for me).
I get why people loved it, so it might be a case of "it's not you, it's me".

Aw, this was a lovely, sweet and very hot little novella.
It's about 2 people in an elevator who never get a proper look at each other before the lights go out and the elevator breaks down. They are, outwardly, 2 very different people - Makenna is a suit-wearing accountant and Caden is a tattooed, pierced paramedic. Without the benefit of sight to give them pre-conceived ideas, they get to know one another in the darkness, realising they have plenty in common, and there is an undeniable physical attraction between them which is all chemistry and nothing to do with their appearances.
Definitely going to seek out more by this author.

Who knew being trapped in pitch black darkness of an elevator with a complete stranger could be so amazing? There is very little plot here but it is sexy as hell. Makenna and Caden get to know each other in the dark, allowing for conversation and personalities to take the lead instead of physical attraction. Semi-instant connection makes for some great conversation and even better “bonding” sessions. I have no idea why the author split her story into two books, except to rope people into purchasing one book twice. Lame. But I have to read the rest so here I am being lame and buying the second book, too. Sigh. I hate allowing an author to take advantage of me.

What an interesting concept for a story. Two strangers, trapped in an elevator overnight, in complete and total darkness. This was a wonderful story of two people coming together to get themselves through a tough situation.
Neither Caden nor MaKenna got a good look at each other when they stepped into that fated elevator. All MaKenna knew was that her Good Samaritan, Caden, had tattoos on his hands and arms. All Caden saw of MaKenna was her fiery red hair and cute bottom.
I loved that these two characters connected on such a deeper level because they couldn’t pass that initial judgement on looks. As the night wears on their conversation becomes more serious and the heart connection grows intimately deeper.
I wish going into this book I had known that it was just a short novella. It left me wanting for so much more of a story than what was given, though I was spellbound by it from beginning to end.

This is a well-written, entertaining, steamy contemporary romance novella. It has a likeable female protagonist, a wounded, engaging male protagonist and sizzling chemistry. I listened to the audio book of this two part duet, and the narrator, Ms. Erin L. Jones, has a lovely voice and does an excellent job depicting the characters and their personalities.

Hearts in Darkness is my favorite novella ever! It's short (100 pages), hot and sweet and is about two strangers stranded together in a pitch-black elevator. And, even with no sight, somehow... the sparks still fly *wink* I loved it! ♥
I don't have a review up because I read this in my pre-blogging days but it a perfect read if you need something in between longer books that still will capture your heart.
Oh, and the hero is tattooed. *grins*

A perfect little jewel!
Short, Sexy, Sizzling Hot, Tender, Sweet, with emotional depth! Caden Grayson is a hot, tattooed hero that is so easy to love and Makenna is a heroine I adored! How can you go wrong?
This short novella met all my requirements for a great read! My only complaint is that it was so good I wished there had been more!

Supremely disappointed with this one, it felt like a bit of a cop out that the contents of what should be one story, has been split across two books.
This book literally spans four hours, of which time they’re basically locked in an elevator the whole time. I can understand how some books only span a day, and are packed full of events and exciting moments, but this was the single most monotonous book I’ve read.
Nothing exciting can really happen while two people are locked in an elevator. They spoke. They ate the little food and water they had on them. They spoke. They hooked up. They got out. They hooked up again. Finished.
This book felt like the beginning of books where you have to push through a backstory dump, too much dialog and the boring scenes of characters meeting before you get to the good stuff. But you know, without the good stuff.
I found the character dialog and backstories interesting enough but it didn’t captivate me. I was left feeling like the story was lacking in emotional pull and there was no real plot lines to speak of. I didn’t mind the character chemistry but again, there wasn’t enough of the book for me to feel a real connection with the characters.
I’m irritated that I finished this book in about half an hour and it’s priced as a full ebook (imo). I read the sample for the next book and it seems to be about them meeting family and trying to have a relationship, the two books should have been condensed into one actual sized book with a plot line.
