Middle-schooler Avery Holsopple is already struggling with the fact that he's the shortest guy in school. To make matters worse, his older sister Valerie has insisted on having a Victorian-style wedding, which means Avery is about to find himself dressed up in the worst color he can imagine for a boy: pink. Of course, Mom insists the color is "mauve" but Avery's eyes know the truth. Desperate to get out of his duties he hatches a plan with Mark, Valerie's fiancé, and ensures that this wedding is one that nobody is ever going to forget.
Nancy Springer has passed the fifty-book milestone, having written that many novels for adults, young adults and children, in genres including mythic fantasy, contemporary fiction, magical realism, horror, and mystery -- although she did not realize she wrote mystery until she won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America two years in succession. DARK LIE, recently released from NAL, is her first venture into mass-market psychological suspense. Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Nancy Springer moved with her family to Gettysburg, of Civil War fame, when she was thirteen. She spent the next forty-six years in Pennsylvania, raising two children (Jonathan, now 38, and Nora, 34), writing, horseback riding, fishing, and birdwatching. In 2007 she surprised her friends and herself by moving with her second husband to an isolated area of the Florida panhandle, where the birdwatching is spectacular and where, when fishing, she occasionally catches an alligator.

I really enjoyed this short story, of Avery Holsopple. This young man is already dealing with self-esteem issues, being the shortest boy in school, when his sister Valerie is determined on having a Victorian-style wedding, featuring A LOT of mauve, or for a boy his age PINK.
I felt incredibly bad for Avery, he was so so so worried about the photos getting around to his friends and the whole school, we do after all live in a day where every mobile has a camera.
I know most people reading this review are probably thinking 'It's just one day, a little pink won't hurt him. ' Well the problem lies in the outfit as a 'whole' Victorian + mauve = every teenage boys (13) worst nightmare, I mean, come on, stockings and little bows on his knees?!?
Where the friendship between Avery and Mark leads is great to read. I loved that he helped him out.
Victorian Secret was gorgeous! I could just picture her prancing along with that little basket in her little puppy dog mouth! It's enough to melt anybodies heart.
It will definitely be a wedding nobody forgets, that's for sure!
