When Miri's grandmother dies, she takes with her the family secret. Miri finds herself alone and abandoned in a St. Louis boarding school. But she is about to discover the secret isn't dead. Taunted by bullies, Miri is shocked to learn she possesses a secret power. It can save her... but can it save those she loves? After she is befriended by others with the same strange, magical powers, her history comes alive. And with it, Miri's fate becomes more dangerous. Join Miri on a mysterious and supernatural journey with her new friends, members of an underground St. Louis society known as the Partnership for Animagi, Werewolves, and Shapeshifters, better known as P.A.W.S.
Debbie grew up in the UK in the East London suburb of Barking. She has lived in Israel, New York and North Carolina and somehow ended up in St. Louis, where she works as a writer, editor and a freelance puzzle constructor of word puzzles and logic problems. She lives with her husband, two very opinionated felines. She believes that with enough tea and dark chocolate you can achieve anything!
3.25 Stars Don't get me wrong, I love dogs... I grew up with three of them! However, I admit I am a cat person. My cat has been my constant companion and best friend for the past 11 years. So I was excited when I was approached by the author to read this book. Think the Animorphs crossed with Hogwarts and you have P.A.W.S, an entertaining YA paranormal fantasy series.
After the death of her grandmother, Miri is sent to live with her aunt and uncle who send her straight to boarding school. When she is there she discovers that with the help of an amulet left to her by her grandmother, she is able to transform into a cat. With help from a newly acquainted werewolf, she soon escapes to P.A.W.S. the Partners of Animagi, Werewolves and Shapeshifters. There, she begins to learn how to use and enhance her powers and discover some she never knew she had. However, there is conniving evil werewolf after Miri and her amulet, and she and all her new friends are in danger.
I enjoyed this easy to read paranormal fantasy. It was easy to read and I enjoyed the premise and the characters. It was quite complex with the different characters and their back stories and I really enjoyed that.
At times it feels like it is geared towards a very young audience, but then there would be a graphic or violent scene and it makes me think it is written for a slightly older audience.
It moved quite quickly, which is not a bad thing, except at times it felt a bit disjointed and I felt the romance between Miri and Danny was rushed and unbelievable. It had no basis, there was just an instant attraction between them, with no tension or explanation really.
I enjoyed Alistair character. He was so evil and really entertaining to read about and I loved the twist about him and his connection with Miri and her mother, although it was predictable.
You gotta love a good shapeshifting story, and CATS!!!
Would I recommend it?
Yes, for fans of YA paranormal reads. Looking forward to the sequel to see what happens next.
Many thanks to Debbie Manber Kupfer for a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
There are three things about this book that immediately attract me to it: 1) it was written during NaNoWriMo; 2) it was inspired by Harry Potter; and 3) the main character is Jewish.
Like Harry Potter, our protagonist is a lonely kid who doesn’t discover her magical powers until several chapters in. Unlike Harry Potter, there’s no wand-waving and spell-casting. Miri is a shapeshifter; she can turn into a cat. The plot really picks up when she encounters others of her kind through an organization called P.A.W.S. At last she comes into her own by developing her own power. Along the way, she makes friends, and of course, together they defeat an evil enemy.
If you like juvie fantasy, this is a fun book featuring a character you’ll probably relate to. The magic is interesting, as are the plot twists with the supporting cast. I can definitely see a sequel coming out of this!
I've read a lot of very good paranormal YA books this year, and now I can add P.A.W.S. to that list.
Young Miriam Katz has the perfect life, right up until the day that her omama dies, and she is whisked away by relatives that don't want her and shoved into a private school where she doesn't fit in. And then comes the kicker: Miri discovers that she can transform herself into a cat. Which ... is just cool.
Soon Miri is swept into a world into which she fits better than the one you and I inhabit, as she is taken to a proper school for someone of her talents - P.A.W.S. - The Partnership of Animagi, Werewolves and Shapeshifters, where all manner of people coexist who are ... at one with the animal kingdom, if you know what I mean.
Of course, a book like this wouldn't be exciting without a dark villain threatening all, when young Miri finds she is the target of the latest scheme by Alistair Wolfe to extend his own cruel existence, she must use her newfound skills (and a few tricks up her sleeve) simply to survive.
Miri was a very good heroine. Sweet, tough, and charming, a typical misfit teenager who finally finds a way to fulfill her potential and take her place in a long lineage of powerful shapeshifters.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review. I think this was an awesome read! It has shapeshifters, action, and heart. The main character Miri is going through a lot - and her family life is anything but simple! The concept of the P.A.W.S. community was so creative too. I read big chunks of the book at a time because I couldn't seem to put it down. The "bad guy" gave me shivers though! Recommend.
Intriguing ... that's the right word for this story. First, would you look at that cover. It is very cool.
Miri is a young girl who was raised by her grandmother until the age of ten. She'd thought it was as normal a childhood as a girl abandoned by her parents could have. She didn't know that she was being brought up amidst secrets. It wasn't until years later, after her grandmother was gone, that she learned the truth. Miri was descended from a long line of shapeshifters who's power was tied to an amulet that certain people would kill to get their hands on.
Soon after discovering her gift, Miri meets the werewolf Josh who introduces her to P.A.W.S. - and organization that can help her and teach her everything she needs to know to deal with what is coming - and come it shall. This is a story of living up to ones family heritage and handling things when the people you are supposed to be able to love can't be trusted. It's a story of different people (or animals) coming together for a common purpose.
I loved this book. Every single good character is easy to love and the bad ones are fun to hate. Miri is strong but in a way that only a teenage girl could be. It's very believable. I liked the writing style. It doesn't get bogged down in unnecessary detail and is pleasant to read. There is a love story that I wished didn't happen so quickly but it didn't lesson my enjoyment. All in all, I'm glad I picked this one up on KU!
I love books that make you not want to put it down. There were many places where I just HAD to keep reading. This book was very entertaining and had some great "edge of my seat" moments. I can't wait to read what happens next.
This book surprised me with its complex, interwoven back story and characters. Miri might be the hero of the book (and a lovely one at that), but the villain of the story really shined for me in this one. I loved to hate Alistair. He was cunning, vicious, and just one step ahead of everyone.
I also enjoyed how all the characters' stories were connected, really pushing forward the plot. The only real criticism I have to offer is that I found Miri's romantic subplot rushed and not as developed as the rest of the storyline. However, I trust Ms. Manber Kupfer and look forward to the next novel.
This is a wonderful book that starts with tragedy and carries on the story of a new generation. Miri receives a cat charm the night before her Omama dies, the morning of her tenth birthday. Sent to live with her uncle and aunt, neither of whom want her or any child, she's faced with life alone with no friends or family. And sent off to boarding school. There she is tormented and teased by the other students until one day the cat charm allows her to transform, which opens up a whole new world to her. Rescued and re-homed at P.A.W.S, Miri has a new start with people just like her who also have similar abilities. The story is delightful, packed with twists and turns that allow you to travel through Miri's adventures and come out the other side wanting more. I loved it. A nice quick read and one I will be sharing with my niece! Highly recommended.
Miri is discovering her families secret after her granmother has passed away. She is then sent to boarding school where she meets other shape shifters. This is a Harry Potter inspired book and you can tell from some of the lore this is a good book for young adults or those who have not read shape-shifting before. Alistair infuriates me he's a bully he's not someone you want to cross. . Nora has been minipulated . Miri and Josh are two of my favorite characters they are beautifully written. I can't wait to read the next book in this series to see where this adverture goes.
Miri comes from a long line of family shifters. Her mom is not part of that line since Miri's omama gave the special amulet to Miri. Her father is the big bad wolf. Miri goes to school with other paranormal beings and is being taught about her new form and possible powers. Very good story. Especially if you need a little break from more adultish reads. Will continue the series when I need those breaks again. Narrator did an excellent job especially with the spells and singing.
I received the audiobook for free from StoryOrigin in exchange for my honest review.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this book. The premise of a shapechanger society known as I enjoyed this book, but there were times I predicted the storyline. P.A.W.S. did not distract from the enjoyability of the book.
Miri was a great protagonist, and I like my journey with her throughout the book. The lore that Debbie created was exceptionally well thought out and compelling.
I would recommend this book to the Young and New Adult crowd as they will connect with the characters in the book.
This is my first book by this author, I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I will be looking for more from this author for sure. This is a well developed story that has characters that bring the story to life. They are connectable and made the story engaging for me. I was pulled into the story right from the beginning. Miri receives a silver cat charm that holds more power than she realizes and is about to make her life a little more interesting. This is a paranormal story where you will meet new friends including werewolves and shapeshifters. I highly recommend this book, will Miri learn to control her power?
Debbie Manber Kupfer introduces Young Adults to P.A.W.S., an organization of young people able to transform into animals. My teen daughter took a quiz to see what her shape-shifted self would look like and which P.A.W.S. Institute was nearest her. The lead character is identifiable, a confused and oppressed young person who finds inner strength throughout the story.
P.A.W.S is the first book in the P.A.W.S Saga series by Debbie Manber Kupfer. It is a wonderful YA paranormal fantasy, with shapeshifters, werewolves, secrets, magic, adventure, danger, violence, drama, and a sprinkle of romance. This is a journey of self-discovery, finding where you belong, friendship, and more. This is my first read from Debbie Manber Kupfer- and I am happy I stumbled on this cute story. There was a lot to love about the book. It does have a bit of a Harry Potter-esque feel to the story, and like Harry our MC is a bit of a lonely misfit- until she finds where she ‘belongs’. Miri’s life turns upside down when her grandmother dies, and she is shipped off to boarding school. But little does she know that this will be the start of a great adventure. From being a bit of an outcast, Miri discovers the ‘family secret’ and begins her journey to her true self. But danger is stalking her with sinister intent. What happens from here, makes for a captivating read. Now- on to Book #2!
“You never know how strong you really are until you are tested.” (Page 263).
Miri Katz is barely keeping her head above water. She is clumsy and nerdy. She has made no friends at her school and is made fun of by the cool kids almost daily. She is an average girl, maybe even below average because she has no special talents. She is failing math. But then everything changes when, in a moment of panic, the amulet her omama gave her transforms her into a cat. Now everyone wants Miri, but not to be her friend.
I almost put this book down. It started off with a historical fiction spin which was really exciting, but then quickly turned into something else entirely that was barely keeping my attention. The writing was a bit stilted and the main character Miri was much too pathetic to like or relate to when we first met her. “Miri did very little other than read fantasy novels and write in her notebooks. In her classes she was a mediocre student at best, plus she was clumsy and socially awkward.” (Page 65).
But I kept reading. There was something about the story that just wouldn’t let me go. And then the story got so much better. The author sucked me into the clutter of Miri’s life and the deepening intrigue of the multiple subplots that eventually merged into the main story. The author had woven a complicated plot that was not at first visible.
Normally I don’t pick up and read paranormal fantasy, but I liked the story and the characters of P.A.W.S. In a world where there are shape shifters, werewolves, and animagi, Kupfer has done a great job sorting through the possibilities of what life would be like in this kind of environment. There are rules and boundaries that make these abilities much more interesting. Kupfer is great at world building.
The essential story Kupfer tells is the one that hooked me. In the beginning I thought it was about a girl trying to find her place in the world (coming of age) and it was, at least to begin with. Then Kupfer adds in complication after complication and the depth of the plot was what held my attention raptly to the end.
If you want a young adult version of Interview with a Vampire, then P.A.W.S. is your book.
This is a fantasy shapeshifter quick read. Could be read as a stand alone, but I feel there will be a sequel. I recommend this for young adults, but could be enjoyed by younger readers... but due to some strong language may not be appropriate. I wasn't able to emotionally invest into this story and I was left questioning several incidents. The plot was highly predictable, I didn't need to finish the book to know the outcome. But I truly feel that younger readers would enjoy this book, minus the few curse words. I appreciated the connection between Miri and her grandmother. I also loved her forgiving heart. I was left questioning some of the mishaps of P.A.W.S. but overall this story has the potential be a good book.
This is Miri's story, she is left with her grandmother when she is born. Her grandmother passes away leaving a young Miri with several questions. She ends up with uncaring family that sends her off to school, in order to be rid of her. She feels utterly alone, not to mention no one at her school seems to like her. Her daily routine includes walking to her favorite place for some quite time, until one day they find her. Cornered and scared she realizes that she has powers. When she learns to control her gift, she meets others like herself. Her new life has many dangers, but she now has friends that will protect her, and she will defend them.
favorite passages:
"There was a gaping hole inside her where Omama used to be...." <3 "In her omama's eyes, she was beautiful." "She felt a strong need to keep those old memories alive, if only for herself." <3 "Her hair was a burning shade of red, and her eyes were emerald green." "It was fall, late October, and there were leaves on the ground, pretty browns and reds." "A part of her had been wrenched from her body." "She did have magic, and it was strong, feline, bada** magic." "She felt like she was inside a a music box that was wound down."
*This Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review*
Great book and awesome characters! I loved the cat shapeshifters! Debbie Manber Kupfer is a gifted writer who brings a whole new world together in this book. I found myself immersed in a world of heartbreaking loss, magic and undiscovered talents.
Miri Katz (cleaver pun) is a cat shifter, when her gran dies she is left to an uncle who doesn't want her. Left in a private school with no friends and a new power she doesn't understand Miri turns to the strange Wolf who appears and leads her into a whole new world, the world of P.A.W.S.
Debbie Manber Kupfer did a great job with the characters and the villain in this book. They were so creative and so frighting! My favourite character was the kangaroo Joey, he hopped from group to group everyone's friend.
the villain in this one was awesome! he stalked, he taunted, he prayed on the weak. he was the ultimate villain! I bet there could have been a whole book written just on him. Debbie Manber Kupfer did a amazing job with his character and I for one would love to learn more about him and why he was the way he was.
I loved learning about these characters and would love to see more books, Lilith intrigued me and her back story would make an excellent next book as would Mandy or Josh.

Author, Debbie Manber Kupfer does a wonderful job of pulling the reader right into the story she has written, P.A.W.S., an acronym for ‘The Partnership of Animagi, Werewolves, and Shapeshifters’. This young adult novel was written with magic and wonder. Her fantastic descriptions draw the reader into her fantasy world.
The characters in P.A.W.S. are strong and written in such a way to link the reader with empathy. I could feel the atmospheres and feelings along with each character. I felt the loving bond between Miri and her Omama; the weariness of a child left on her own at a young age; and the wonderment of Miri discovering her own powers.
All the characters have their own story, and I was caught up in each. P.A.W.S. is full of action, magic, and suspense that will leave the reader sitting on the edge of their seats. The author does a wonderful job of giving the reader exactly what is needed, without over-drawn and long descriptions.
The plot is strong and the history, which the author merges gracefully into the story line, was a big plus for me.
I highly recommend this young adult fantasy/paranormal to all who love a good fantasy story, young and old alike.
I was given a PDF copy of P.A.W.S. in exchange for an honest review.
I'd heard about this book countless times and finally got to read it. It surpassed any expectations I had or story I was expecting. There is a lot this book has to establish as the first book in a series and does so in a really interesting fashion. As the story progresses and the opportunity arises, there will be a short chapter giving a snapshot of the background to a character. These quick glimpses broaden the background and history of the world we are reading about and also have significance to the part of he story we are in at the time.
By the end of the book the main characters have far more complexity than I expected when it began as more and more was revealed. If there was one minor complaint I had with the book though it was how little substance there was to minor characters. Some of them I am sure though will have more depth to them given in future instalments.
The one thing I was really surprised though in this book was the level of darkness there was at times for the characters to face. There were moments where I really did fear for some of them so that came across quite well.
It was really an enjoyable story overall and it's easy now to see why I kept hearing about it.
This was a wonderful YA Paranormal story that sucked me in from the very beginning. Normally, due to the age difference between myself and YA stories (its not that big of a difference I swear) I find a variety of little things that bug me. With this story that did not happen, I love that she explains the history surrounding the supernatural in her story. The characters and the story were very well developed. I would recommend this to any young adult or adult who can appreciate a good story.
The story is about Miri, a young girl who, after being dropped off to her grandmother when she was born realizes that there is more to her life and family than she ever thought possible. They are shapeshifters, one of the original families. When Miri loses her grandmother and is sent to boarding school by her absentee Uncle and Aunt, she discovers that she's not alone and embarks on a journey with her fellow Animagi and paranormal friends. Together, they set off to save each other from dark forces that are at work. Dark forces that are closer to Miri than she ever imagined.
P.A.W.S. is a story about a teen aged girl trying to find her place in the world. It feels real mainly because it's a struggle we can all identify with. At some point in time pretty much every human being has to figure out who they are and what they want. Miri is no exception. She flounders a bit but that's okay because we all do. She has to deal with some problems with bullying as well. That's something that many of us, including myself, have dealt with as as well. Miri finds herself in many situations that hit hard, not because of their unusual nature but because I've been there and done that. This is a little girl that I have a lot in common with.
The flip side of that is that she gets to do things that those of us who actually exist can only dream about. What would it be like to change into a cat, to be able to change into a cat and scamper away from trouble? If I could sense and project the emotions of others what would/could I use that for? If I could have chuck my humdrum existence and enter into a magical world, I'd do it in a minute. Miri is a bit more hesitant but it's easier to say that I'd change my whole life in a minute than it would be to actually do it.
P.A.W.S. is a good example of why I love to read YA fantasy. I thought this was going to be a light and fluffy kid’s book about shape shifters but it turned out to be so much more. Miri, the protagonist, is only ten years old when her grandmother dies. Following the death of the only family she has ever known, Miri is forced to leave behind her home in New York, her only friend, and her two pet cats to go live with her estranged aunt and uncle in St. Louis. Shortly after arriving in St. Louis, Miri is sent to a boarding school where she is bullied and withdrawn. It is during this bullying that Miri discovers her ability to shape shift into a cat which I thought was a very clever way to incorporate fantasy into the story. The story itself was compelling and entertaining, the plot was well developed, and the characters were likable. Overall, I would say it was a great read but will only recommend for older kids and adults due to the violence in a few scenes.
This is the first book I read of this author and I am completely sold. It's such a fresh take on the shifter and paranormal world. It's written and edited perfectly. It starts with Nazi Germany and ends in present day U.S. The lead character is Miri who is sweet 10 years girl at the start of the book living with her grandmother and had quite a few cats in and around their house. She gets a charm necklace from her grandmother as a birthday gift after which her world changes from bad to worst and then again better. You need to read the story to understand what I am saying. P.A.W.S is an organization which trains shape shifters and is funded by a govt agency, which for a change is not a sinister agency trying to do some new shape shifter creation experiment which was a relief. A sweet story with adventure and a bit of romance. I am already onto the next book.
When Miri’s grandmother passes away she is shuffled off to her only known relative, an uncaring Uncle, and his spiteful wife. They don’t waste any time sending her to an exclusive boarding school where Miri is teased and bullied. She doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere until she reaches the end of her endurance and transforms from her human form into a cat. She manages to get some revenge on her tormentors before she is recruited into a whole different sort of life. One mystery after another is unraveled as Miri learns how to control her power and she meets new friends and foes. Kupfer has created a wonderful world of shifters with distinct personalities. One, in particular, Hugo Hogsworth, a shapeshifting pig who is the P.A.W.S. chef and had learned to cook, where else but the Paris P.A.W.S. Fun, well-written story for pre-teen on up.
P.A.W.S. had me hooked from the first page of the prologue! I did not want it to end. Debbie Manber Kupfer is a talented writer who drew me into the lives of the characters. The detailed description of Miri’s happy life before the tragedy struck made me feel even worse for Miri. The author did this for other characters in the book as well, and the contrast of their pleasant lives against their tragedies created an emotional bond for me with the characters. The sensory descriptions in this book transported me into the story. I could feel the characters’ pain and joy. The story was full of action and magic and kept me turning the page to find out what would happen next. I highly recommend this story, and I can’t wait for the sequel!
This has an intriguing storyline that was well written and clearly well thought out with interesting twists that easily keep you glued to the book. When Miri inherits an amulet from her grandmother, she has no idea of the power it holds or what she is or that she has now become the target of someone willing to kill any who stand in his way of getting the Amulet. But as in all good stories, Miri will not face this danger alone, when she is found by Josh (a werewolf) and taken back to join P.A.W.S, Miri quickly comes to view this mixture of animagi and shapeshifters as family. This is a great young Adult read ful of Magic and mystery. Try it, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.
I was given a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own, and I was not paid in any way.
I really didn't know anything about this story before I started reading it. I love how easy this book is ti read, it would make a great middle school aged kids to read, but may be a bit violent depending on the maturity of the child. At any rate, The book was enjoyable and the imagery made it easy to "see" the areas and characters. I really just loved the story, and I hope to read another soon.
Great book. It was such an enjoyable read that I couldn't put it down and finished it in one afternoon. I love the characters that Debbie has created especially Miri. She has to deal with things that turns her world as she knows it upside down. With the help of her friends she deals with the situation. If you haven't added to your TBR list then you need to. I highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more of Debbie's books.
A creative, one-of-a-kind adventure! I found the beginning a little slow, some spots of direct exposition, and the style mostly simple, mid-grade level (except for some content that may be a little intense for young viewers) language, but on the whole, Kupfer brings all of the flashbacks and the twisting plot threads together into a rousing conclusion! If you're a fan of shapeshifter lore and you want to see a new twist on the tropes—Welcome to P.A.W.S.!
