Hi there! I'm an author of mostly sci-fi/fantasy YA novels, like Legend, Warcross, The Young Elites, Skyhunter, and Stars & Smoke. My adult fantasy debut, Red City, releases this October 14, 2025.

I graduated from the University of Southern California and currently live in LA with my family. Before becoming a full-time writer, I was an Art Director at a video game company. Now I spend most of my time writing, trying to keep my plants alive, and getting stuck in traffic. I feel very honored that I get to tell you stories, and my deepest wish is always that my books can offer you some joy, solace, entertainment, and/or escape. With all my heart, thank you for reading.

First just let me say that I loved this series. However this final book was severely disappointing. There was zero character development from the last book and actually felt as if this new author haven't even read the others. It felt disjointed and I lost track of where I was more than once. There was hardly any dialogue at all and all of the battles seemed rushed. The writing was of very poor quality and I felt for the first time that I was truly reading a children's book. Thing would happen and I would be left wondering how? Characters would be there one minute and gone the next with no hint as to what had happened to them. I don't know if the Author was told to make this the last book or what but everything was so crammed in and disjointed. It really needed to be two books.

I have one major problem with this series: it doesn't make much sense?! For seven books strait, the kids just seem to make trips to different parts of their world. They accomplish... nothing. The whole world is at war and the kids are part of a big organization of (mostly adult) warriors, still they are always fighting (more or less) alone and when not they are in company of someone who is utterly useless. The representation of adults in this series is bad or not existent in parts. I get that these are middle grade books, but still. If some of the greenies would have given a f*** in the first six books the whole war would have been a different thing.
Even when they were in company of adults, nobody was smart enough to POST A BLOODY LOOKOUT at night. IN THE MIDDLE OF BLOODY ENEMY TERRITORY. For seven books strait, they were practically screaming "TAKE ME HOSTAGE" at the enemy. I read a lot of middle grade growing up and I was as annoyed by stupid actions like that then as I am now.

So, did I like this series?
They books are ok. As long as you do not expect too much character development or a fight against evil that makes a difference. And you could really tell that each book was written by a different author. It was the first time I read I series like that, so maybe I just wasn't used to it...? It just felt confusing to me. As if every book pressed the reset button on character and plot development.

So all in all I finished the whole thing... But it just wasn't my cup of tee.

What a phenomenal ending to the series!
The book started out a little slow, but it followed the 'feeling' of the main characters - Rollan, Abeke, and Conor - who were a little dazed and torn down from having the talismen (talismans?) stolen. The three try to gather as many of the remaining Greencloaks as possible in order to attack the Conquerors in Stetriol - and hopefully stop Kovo from taking over the world!
They are battered and bruised and are hoping that their friend Meilin will be able to fight the Bile long enough to help them save Erdas.
They meet Tollan who is the last of the Great Beasts that has not given up his talisman, but it is too late, Kovo has already built the staff and is now beginning to control the Great Beasts.
The beasts put up one last fight and when they realize they will not win, they sacrifice themselves by throwing themselves into the Evertree. Only the Four Fallen remain - they do not have to sacrifice themselves again. A little sapling is starting anew. Erdas is saved!

This book was a whirlwind from start to finish. It tied all the pieces together, brought the good guys to the top and evil fell. This would be a great series for middle years readers who like animal and adventure books!

I was really somewhat disappointed by this conclusion to an otherwise fine series. This installment seemed thin and contrived, and, ironically, anti-climactic. It lacked consistency and continuity with the foregoing books in the series, something I had feared might happen with the multiple authors, but didn't seem to be the case up until this seventh book. It fell flat for me, frankly, and I found it rather tedious and tiring to read. I hope the subsequent series will return to the strong start that this one had.

4.3 ⭐️ for this book 4.2 ⭐️ for this series as a whole. hem hem we have a lot to cover so let’s get INTO IT. hmmmmm an end of an era (see what i did there😏) missy meilin, “she couldn’t help but marvel at how regal conor look” GIRL GO GET UR MAN NOT CONORR. it’s ok though cuz we finally got that relin kiss😌 might i add that the scene at the end where rollan challenges her to a race home is very much reminding me of a certain two demigods🤭 (percy+annabeth 4life) also redemption arc for shane??? still can’t forgive him cuz he’s pathetic. may be brutal but like ur so gullible💀. i have a little bit of sympathy, like this much 🤏 but other than that, no mercy just stfu and ride ur fat ass crocodile away (he better not have heard that and come for me in my sleep knock on wood 🪵…. yes i actually did just knock the fbi agent in my phone will confirm) anyways i don’t really need to talk about the plot ending, it was epic; it was cool. great. OH BUT rip dorian, that death hit me idk why. i knew this bitch for 2 seconds. last thing. the use of exclamation marks kinda pissed me off😭 it was all so dramatic every time i saw an exclamation my brain would switch to its npc voice and read it. oh well. “the talisman!” only a fourth grader would eat that up. so i can’t judge as a high schooler reading this💀. alr alr thats all. not saying goodbye yet cuz don’t you worry the next series is coming but yea. love them🫶🫶

3 stelle e mezzo
Ho trovato l’intera serie molto piacevole. È un’ottima storia di formazione, mai banale, piena di argomenti validi e interessanti e che non fa a meno di momenti di avventura e di divertimento.
Lettura piacevole e divertente.

Spirit Animals, The Evertree is the final book of an amazing, 7-book series. The main characters, Connor, Abeke, Meilin and Rollan were just regular kids – until they learned that they had spirit animals – powerful and wise companions that they can summon in times of need. In the story, the main characters and their spirit animals are racing to stop Kovo the ape, the leader of the evil enemies, from collecting the final talisman and destroying the world. This book demolishes all the other books in the series when it comes to action. Every page is filled with suspenseful and exiting moments. If you enjoy fantasy and adventure, then I highly recommend this book. Once you start reading it, I know you’ll have a hard time putting it down.

Last book in this series and I will give it a four. My son (10) is experiencing his first series withdrawal, he got very attached to the characters and their quest and was upset when it was over. He'll be very excited when I give him the first three books of the follow up series Spirit Animals: Fall of the Beasts.

The series was good, mostly I'm impressed with how multiple authors kept the spirit of the series the same as well as the characters, it felt like a fluid piece. Only once did I feel something was off, and I think that was actually a plot line instead of a character deviance.

Great ending! I really liked how everything came together. The only thing I’m confused about is why Meilin’s dad had her drink the bile in the first place? Was he with the conqueror’s? Did I miss that part? I know it happened in earlier books but I don’t think it was ever explained. Does anyone know?

Spirit Animals
Marie Lu’s book, The Evertree, demonstrates the strength needed to overcome loss, the trust and support needed for a good team, and the adversity that comes after struggle. The author takes the reader through Spirit Animals, a seven book series. Book number seven is The Evertree. The novel is about a group of kids who summon spirit animals at age eleven. When kids turn eleven they have a ceremony to see if they get a spirit animal. Most people do not get a spirit animal. There was a war between the greencloaks and the conquerors. The greencloaks are a group of good people who all own spirit animals and help the world. The conquerors are a group of people who forced animals to bond with people and then fight the greencloaks. The leader of the conquerors is the reptile king who owns a large crocodile. There are The Great Beasts, and there are fourteen of them. They are huge animals that are intelligent and can speak. Each of them have talismans that can give power to a spirit animal or person. Two of them sided with the conquerors and four of them sided with the greencloaks. The four that sided with the greencloaks died in the war. The greencloaks won the war and a hundred years later four kids summoned the four fallen as their spirit animals. With an experienced greencloak they all set out to get all the talismans from the rest of the Great Beasts. But it's a race because all the conquerors are also after all the talismans. This is the last book in the series and theys still continue to fight. The four kids lost the only leader they knew, but they still continue to fight the conquerors and try to prevail. They also have a new leader that they learn to trust so that the team can prevail and save the world. After all the loss and betrayal and struggle they have been through they still try to win and they overcome all the struggles. The author uses different perspectives throughout the story to have the reader further understand the different characters and their thoughts and feelings. I think that teenagers and younger would enjoy these books. They are a little young for me but overall very good. I think this series is a solid read and young people would enjoy it. It has good lessons that young people could benefit from.

A great ending to the series! A little bit too dramatic and with great losses (the struggles were a lot more than it was strictly necessary) but I'm happy we got a bit of a happy ending ❤️

Also I sorta got my Shane redemption arc so I'm happy with that.

I'm honestly surprised that these books aren't more popular. They're great. I accidentally started reading them from book 2 AND I'm 20 years older than the target audience and I think they're incredibly well written and that the characters and the plot is awesome.

It's on par with Rick Riordan's books and that's one of the highest praises I can give for kids lit. I'll be reading the prequels and the next series arc I'm honestly impressed!

Niektórzy mają Zwiadowców. A ja mam to.
Jak dobrze było wrócić do Zielonej Przystani.
Na Erdas.
Jak dobrze było wrócić do domu.
Kocham ten tom. Kocham jego zakończenie. Kocham go jako zakończenie całej serii. Lepszego nie mogłabym sobie wymarzyc.
"Już zawsze będziemy rodziną. Zawsze."
