Trace Elements

Rate this book
Special Agent Annika Trace is the hottest thing in law enforcement—at least on TV. Her long legs, designer suits, and hunky sidekick have garnered millions of fans, one of whom—a four-year-old kidnap victim named Linzie—is refusing to talk to the real FBI. In desperation, Special Agent Trace—a.k.a. actress Nikki Gower—is called in to help.

Special Agent Josh Saxon became a hero when he brought Linzie back safely. Now he’s out to catch the kidnappers and doesn’t need some Hollywood caricature of a federal agent interfering in his case. But when Nikki establishes a rapport with the child, Josh admits she might just get him enough information to track down the culprits. And even as Josh and Nikki spar over the best way to get the job done, another rapport is being established—on a much more physical and decidedly more adult level—as Josh discovers firsthand how Nikki makes the airwaves sizzle.

* Bonus Material! This book includes the pilot episode from Nikki Gower’s hit TV show, Trace Elements. The episode is also available at www.katedonovan.com and beyondthepagepub.com/trace-elements-p... *

This book has a slightly different approach to plotting than most books I've read, making it fresh and new. A little girl has been kidnapped, and when she's returned back to her parents, she doesn't speak. She's retreated completely into her own world, and no one is able to bring her back. This little girl, Linzie, has one very favorite person in the whole world. TV series character Special Agent Annika Trace. In the hopes that Linzie will open up to someone, actress Nikki Gower, who plays the Special Agent, is brouht in to talk to the little girl.

Nikki has to stay in character while talking to Linzie, and this is where things could have ended up being a hit or a miss. Having once character play two characters could easily have been a mess and become confusing. But the author has managed to write clearly and precisely, making it easy for the reader to follow the constant switches between Annika and Nikki.

No romance book with respect for itself is complete without a hero. Enter "real" Special Agent Josh Saxon. Josh is a dreamboat and a proper Alpha male. I fell in love with his brooding ass, and the chemistry between the characters helped making this book a very memorable read.

This book has some twists and turns that are both expected and unexpected, making sure you're glued to the pages. Kate Donovan sails up on my list as another favorite author. I just fell in love with her writing and her characters. It seems like this is the first book in a new series, I for one am crossing my fingers and hope it is so.

I'm a huge fan of the tongue-in-check humor employed by the TV series, Castle, where a writer tags along & helps a New York city detective solve crimes. What makes it even better is that the writer(s) of Castle have decided to make Richard Castle "real" - with his books being published, series being made into graphic novels and even a website. Imagine the fun I've had with the opportunity to read (in exchange for an HONEST review) the recently published novel, "TRACE ELEMENTS" by Kate Donovan! I think I enjoyed it so much because it has vague similarities to Castle with its expanded media...

"TRACE ELEMENTS" is a 191 page romantic suspense novel penned by Kate Donovan, but tag-lined as if it were an actual television show. Josh Saxon is an FBI agent who recently found & rescued a kidnapped four year old and is still trying to solve the "whodunnit" of the kidnapping. To help the young child feel safer, the parents request that the FBI approach the actress of their favorite FBI TV show, Nikki Gower, who portrays Agent Annika Trace, will come reassure the girl she is not in any more danger. (See where it's going here? An actress in a TV show, portraying an FBI agent, needs to come "be" an FBI agent, etc....)

While at times the premise seems a bit far-fetched, well, that's why it is fiction. It's funny to see the dialogue between the real agent & the "real" agent... and interesting to watch them fall for each other. Again - while it seems a bit far-fetched... IT'S FICTION. The mystery in the story is entertaining and not too transparent that it can't keep a reader involved, and it's funny how Nikki thinks about everything in terms of what her character would do or how the show would go. Most interesting, though, is that at the end Kate Donovan has written the "TV Pilot" for the original "Trace Elements" show. Now, I have to admit - at that point, I was starting to feel a bit dizzy, with the show within the book about the story surrounding the show... whew! Get what I mean? And really - this roundabout poking fun at itself is what makes this such an enjoyable book!

At $2.99 this is a great value - and since it looks as if Kate Donovan has quite a backlist of novels, you may just find another author to add to your TBR (to-be-read) pile!

It was a good read. Not great but good. It definitely kept my interest and prepared me for the next book.
I have a theory about her stalker and I'm really interested in finding out if I'm right.
I'm kind of in love with Josh so that makes me want to continue reading.

I do have to say that I'm not big on insta-love but it didn't really feel like insta-love to me. I don't know why but it didn't.

My Review:
I had received another one of Kate Donovan's books for review (Play by Play and it was also good and creative) and it included the first chapter of this book. I found myself intrigued by the creative story line and immediately purchased and read it (totally ignoring the 1000+ books already in my TBR pile.) This book and this author have definitely been a pleasant surprise.

Like I said, the story line is incredibly creative. Josh is an FBI agent and he's in the middle of a case that's getting worse and worse. He saved a 4 yo little girl from a kidnapping, but they didn't catch the kidnappers. He needs her to give him information, but she's completely clammed up and won't tell him a thing. She's terrified and as the hours and days go by the chances of catching the kidnappers become even slimmer.

In an act of desperation, they bring in actress, Nikki Gower, who plays an FBI agent on the 4 yo's favorite TV show. They hope the little girl will trust her enough to talk to her. Nikki isn't your typical actress. She fell into her career on the way to actually working for the FBI. The creator of her TV show has used her life as inspiration for the show. But Josh is less than thrilled to have her there meddling, until it starts to work and he begins to realize that she does have a natural talent for this.

This book is just the start of the series and although the book ends well, there's a few loose ends out there that you can see are definitely going to come up in future books. I can't wait!

It's a great set-up for a book and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more. There were a few rough spots in the book (especially in the first half) where the character actions gave me a bit of whiplash in their too rushed changes of heart and actions. But overall, the book was good enough that I could overlook that. Kate Donovan has a great writing voice and I foresee it getting better and smoother as she goes on. Her stories are very creative. The two I've read have been great just in the completely new twists that she includes in her stories. Overall, her books are easy to read and her characters are absolutely fabulous. I definitely look forward to reading more!

If you're a fan of the TV show Castle, you'll probably enjoy this book. There was a lot of the same type of humor displayed in the dialogue as well as acknowledgement by Nikki of the endlessly crazy situations that her character ends up in in every episode of the show. I'm a fan of the show, and I enjoyed reading about the reverse Castle where the male is the real cop and the female is the actress.

Watching Nikki work to try to bring the little girl, Linzie, out of her shell while watching episodes of her TV show was very well done and the most enjoyable part of the book. I loved the role play with the dolls. Linzie was highly traumatized following her kidnapping, so it was hard to assess how her actions played as a four year old. She was described as highly intelligent, which I believe was the author's attempt to cover any actions that seem "too old" for such a little girl, but ultimately I felt she was believable and I really liked her interactions with Nikki.

The romance between Nikki and Josh began rather abruptly and never really developed fully. One minute they hate each other and the next, they're in bed together. I'm not a believer in the Moonlighting Curse, but there is something to be said for a decent amount of unresolved sexual tension between two characters. The build-up is part of the fun - especially when you know that they'll eventually get together (and won't be waiting for 6 seasons unlike on TV).

The mystery of the kidnapping was pretty well thought out and the villains not played as totally inept. Their plan was very complex and the motive believable. However, the climax of the story was over the top. Then again, it played out very much like it would on TV, so it fit with the story and some of its tongue in cheek hits on TV crime dramas.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and would be interested in reading more adventures of "Agent" Nikki Gower and Special Agent Josh Saxon.

The premise of this book intrigued me from the get-go. Nikki Gower, the current “It Girl” who plays badass Special Agent Annika Trace on the hit TV show “Trace Elements” has been recruited to help a real FBI case involving the kidnapping of a four year old girl named Linzie. Linzie has been so traumatized by her kidnapping and subsequent rescue that she refuses to speak to anyone. Knowing that “Trace Elements” is Linzie’s favorite TV show, Nikki is assigned the task of reaching out to Linzie as Special Agent Annika Trace in the hopes that she will reveal information desperately needed to catch the kidnappers.

Special Agent (super-sexy) Josh Saxon absolutely HATES this idea. Why on earth would the FBI need a sexy woman who merely portrays an agent on TV be able to get through to the girl he rescued? Because she’s Annika F’ing Trace, that’s why! In character as Annika, Nikki establishes a relationship with Linzie that slowly brings her out of her shell and connects with Nikki in a way that just may get Special Agent Saxon the information he needs to bring the criminals to justice.

After seeing Annika bond with Linzie, Josh’s opinion of her slowly starts to change and he is warming up not only to mission at hand, but to Nikki as well.

This is a fast-paced read that is filled with quick-witted banter, action and romance. I sincerely hope that this book is the first of more

I didn't know what to think when I first got this book, maybe it was a Castle type story minus Nathan Fillion, I was wrong. This was a great book lovable characters and not a sugar coated storyline.

Special Agent Josh Saxon has hit a dead end after the successful return of four year old kidnapped victim Linzie. She has remained silent about her kidnappers due to the trauma she had to endure, she has only one wish to speak to her favorite T.V. character, Special Agent Annika Trace. The FBI bring in actress Nikki Gower to help. Josh is not happy when he first hears that they are bringing in an actress to help but soon changes his tune when Nikki bonds with the child bringing her a little further out of her shell everyday she is with her enough she is able to help give clues and identify suspects.

The chemistry between Josh and Nikki is electric. Unable to keep it professional they soon end up in bed together, but between the case and the baggage from his past and her current issues they always end up arguing after sex and making up a few hours later. I really do like this book, but I am a fan of FBI stories so it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked reading it. I want more I hope to read more books from the series, my hope for the series is that it doesn't get to soap opera-ish.

This was a fun and enjoyable read, once you can suspend your disbelief that a 4-5 year old would be so obsessed with an adult show about 2 detectives and that the FBI would call on an actress to go in and question a child. This is the first story by Kate Donovan that I have read.

I did like Nikki - she seemed pretty down to earth and I thought it was interesting how she went about getting into character and staying in character when meeting with Linzie. Josh was a frustrated agent, but was willing to do what he needed to in order to get the bad guy. I do wish that we could have seen a little more in what he did when looking for Linzie (the story starts after Linzie has been recovered and they are calling in Nikki to help get information out of Linzie). There was definite attraction between Josh and Nikki, but there was a sudden jump between the attraction and them jumping into bed together. Hopefully future books will look a little closer at their relationship.

The ending felt a little chaotic and rushed to me. There is definite set up for further books in the series and I will likely check out the next story when it is released.

An enjoyable fast read. Special Agent Annika Trace is the lead character in the hottest law enforcement show on TV. But when real-life 5-year old Linzie is rescued from her kidnappers but refuses to speak to anyone, her mother asks the FBI to bring in Special Agent Annika Trace, aka actress Nikki Gower to help. FBI agent Josh Saxon is the hero who rescued Linzie, but can't get her to give him information to help track down the kidnappers. Linzie loves Annika Trace's TV show so her mother thinks Linzie will talk to her favorite 'FBI' agent. Nikki Gower is game to give it a try. She soon discovers she's out of her depth, but Josh & Nikki develop respect for each others abilities & manage to work together. Of course, the sparks fly between Nikki & Josh as they help Linzie become secure enough to confide in them. I found it implausible for a 5-year old to be so entrenched in an adult TV show described as having sexual tension built into each week's plot along with cops & robbers shoot 'em up scenes. But the story was engaging, the characters were likable, and the reader roots for Linzie to help the FBI find the bad guy kidnappers. I would recommend it.

Trace Elements is a meta on meta, Nikki Gower, who plays the ever famous FBI agent Annika Trace on the hit TV series Trace Elements has been recruited by the real FBI to help with a little girl recovering from her kidnapping ordeal. Agent Josh Saxon is not amused, what can a mere actress do to help? Trace Elements was a fun, romantic action adventure that was more than the lighthearted story I expected. Although the witty dialogues and banters between Josh and Nikki were exceptional, the romantic aspect truly sizzling and humorous, the action part did not disappoint. It was fast paced and a true mystery waiting to be solved. There were a lot of back stories, especially on Nikki's side, not to mention a would be stalker that wasn't entirely solved. But the author hinted that there may be more of these two in the works. Trace Elements reads just like our favorite TV shows, captivating, engaging with a chocful-of-chemistry-couple we root for every week.

. Trace Elements
By Kate Donovan
Kate Donovan has written an entertaining book that reminds you of the TV show ‘Castle’. A real life FBI Special Agent Josh Saxon, successfully recovers a kidnapped 4 year old girl. She is traumatized from the kidnapping and they bring in her the favorite TV star of a law enforcement drama, Special Agent Annika Trace, a.k.a. actress Nikki Gower to make her feel safe.
That’s when the sparks begin to fly between Josh and Nikki. Though both are attracted to each other, but when Nikki tries to help, Josh is initially unhappy. They ultimately work together to solve the crime and help this precious little girl.
There were a few times in the early transitions I had a bit of whiplash with the changing emotions and even with that, the characters still were a bit too predictable. What I like about the book has a strong female lead, there is great chemistry between the two leads and it is similar to ‘Castle’ in reverse (the woman is the celeb), a romance and a mystery. I enjoyed this book and recommend it. 4 out of 5 stars (less)

A few weeks ago I reviewed the second book of a series about an actress who wants to become an FBI agent. It was so good I had to read the first one as soon as possible.
While I liked the character of Nikki—and her character of Annika—just as much, the plot wasn’t quite as good. For one thing the story was much slower, with less action until the end. Since it’s listed as more of a romance, the main characters don’t like each other until they give in to the sexual tension. The best part for me was the psychology when trying to get the little girl to talk, and the reasons she doesn’t. From a more personal nature, my favorite moment was Nikki wearing a UCLA cap.
So while I didn’t find it as good as the second book, it’s still a great character-driven story. You’ll fall in love with Nikki’s sense of humor and love of life.
Note: the last quarter of this book is the pilot episode of the series she’s filming, so the book’s a bit shorter than expected.

Special Agent Josh Saxon is investigating a kidnapping in which the four year old victim has been safely recovered. Linzie isn't talking about her ordeal, so her parents decide to call in help. Josh is frustrated when they bring in an actress, Annika Trace, who plays a special agent in a popular television show that Linzie loves. Annika really wants to help Linzie, but soon things between she and Josh heat up to a level that they can't ignore.

This romantic suspense was enjoyable, and there was lots of steam between Josh and Annika. I liked both of their characters, as well as Linzie. I do have to say that Linzie was very unlike an average 4 year old child. The premise of the story was interesting, and there was plenty of action. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.

3.5 starsI really liked this one, it pulled me in and could not stop reading until the end. It was also a neat spin on an FBI investigation. Agent Saxon kinda came off as an ass in the beginning, but was understandable given the situation and Nikki was interesting, an actress who plays a Special Agent on TV brought in to help get information from a traumatized little girl. The only thing that threw me was when Nikki & Josh hook up...you know it is going to happen...I just don't know if it happened to quick but it just seemed off at least at that point in the story...it's probably just me, so aside from that I liked it and hope there is more to come. This book was provided by the Publisher/Author via NetGalley for an honest review

Wow! What a wild ride Kate Donovan takes her readers on with this fast paced, roller coaster of a read. It was a regular Russian Nesting Doll of a story. There was the real FBI Agent, the TV FBI Agent, the real case, TV cases; sometimes a bit hard to follow the connections, but the author managed to weave everything into a good read. The primary couple were amusing and engaging, easy to want them to hook up. The premise of the book was intriguing, and the settings well drawn. Witty dialogue abounds, and the ending, if a stretch (fiction, don'tcha know, satisfying. This may be the start of a series, which would explain why so much information/background is crammed into this novel. I would be interested to see where the author goes with these characters.

This was an original story about a Special Agent, Josh Saxon, who is investigating a kidnap & return of a child. The little girl returned isn't talking to anyone, so they decide to bring in her favorite TV character, the actress portraying a Special Agent, on TV "Annika Trace". Josh is furious over the whole thing. Nikki Gower shows up as her character "Special Agent Annika Trace" and plays her part. She has an education that is skimmed over in the beginning, but it works well for her in this book & low and behold... Josh & Nikki have a thing & HEA... Surprise!

It was an entertaining book with it's original plot. I liked it, but it wasn't a chart topper. If you're looking for a fast read, romantic suspense, it's for you... I would put it in a beach read or poolside category...

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Trace Elements was one of the first books I got on Netgalley. It is in one of my favorite genres - romantic suspense. Somehow, I lost the book on my Kindle, so in the end I purchased it, so I could review. I'm on a mission to clean up those back ARCs (there are only 3 more).

The plot kept me interested in the FBI case. There were many unrealistic aspects, however. Linzie, at four years old, should not be watching such a violent, adult TV show.  Her mother's constant flirting with the FBI agents was unnecessary. Having a TV actress so involved with the case, without even trying a psychologist, and then to have her so unsupervised seems unprofessional. I couldn't suspend my disbelief even though it is fiction.

Josh and Nikki were likable enough characters for the little they were developed. Trace Elements is just under 200 pages and could have been expanded to a more normal 300 to allow for more character and relationship development. It was insta-lust jumping to insta-love quickly.  Since this is listed as first in a series, perhaps more of their background will follow.

Nothing seemed very real about the people. My attention was kept well enough while reading but there wasn't enough world-building or character development to garner my emotional connection.  I enjoyed  a very fast, light read.

[I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.] Trace Elements would not be on my renewal list. Kate Donovan's Trace Elements is a book that I wanted to like, I did. In fact, I put off writing about it, so I could ponder it a bit more. But I have to say even though I was really excited about the premise - an actress who portrays a take-no-prisoners FBI agent being consulted on a case by a real FBI hunk - I was just disappointed in the story.

In many ways it is a fun read, but it's almost like Donovan took the television concept a little too seriously and instead of focusing on the plot, I found myself midway through the book wanting to flip channels instead of pages. I don't want to give you the wrong idea. It's not that it's not well-written. It is. The characters are interesting, though pretty predictable. There are enough lingering unaddressed issues to practically guarantee a sequel or two in the Gower and Saxon franchise. But it was if I had planned to curl up with a chocolate bar and instead found myself with only a spoonful of non-fat unflavored yogurt. This book just didn't hit the spot for me.

What troubled me the most was the repeated premise that the actress/lawyer/would-be real FBI agent Nikki Gower could appear in a series with a producer and co-star who knew she hadn't "had any" from the first episode through the 15th (one season) in order to supposedly heighten sexual tension between the actors. Well that just set off the creep factor for me and made me highly doubt her as a character. Sorry, but method acting is one thing, but having people in power have that intimate knowledge and being frightened of repercussions if you do "do it." Ummm, sexual harassment anyone? Creepy, very creepy. This in fact may be a plot point to set the stage for future sequels, but it just sets bells off that if Nikki were in any way "real" should have had her running not walking from that series, producer, and co-star.

And that was the main problem, I never felt like these were real characters or could be real people. It was as if they were written to be watched on television - at several steps removed from reality.

I'd only recommend this book if you'd like a super light read that you don't want to take too seriously. I hate to say this as I have really enjoyed reading other Kate Douglas books (Game of Hearts, for one). She's a really great writer, but somehow just missed the mark, in my opinion, with Trace Elements.

I thought the premise of a TV actress being brought in to team up with an FBI agent to solve a case sounded good so I gave this one a try. It was enjoyable at times, but it had its weak moments too.

The story opens with the colossal meeting of FBI Special Agent Josh Saxon and TV agent Annika Trace in the form of Nikki Gowen. Sparks flew, but in the interest of helping a child witness recover enough to talk about her experience and thus allow them to nab the kidnappers, they agreed to work together. The process of getting Linzie to talk and figure out different oddities about the case took on some unusual procedures. Josh learned to respect Nikki's instincts and Nikki learned quick that real FBI work didn't follow a script.

The plot both engaged me in the beginning and I was interested in reading through to the end, but I wasn't satisfied with the feel of the story after a while. I liked the general direction of the story and in particular the very beginning, but then it changed for me. The first thing I noticed was that the pacing was off on the relationship and their encounters felt forced like the characters were on on/off switches. The speed of them jumping in the sack wasn't credible the way the relationship went up until that point. After that, both sides of the plot started to feel like it was a TV melodrama- like I was reading a story about a story if that makes sense. Characters' behavior and dialogue grew stilted like they were actors of the characters instead of the characters, and there was a sense of incompleteness. Though to be factual, the author left a note at the end almost like an Epilogue discussing some of the loose ends.

It was interesting enough to finish and it had its good moments. Those who enjoy TV police dramas would probably enjoy this one.

Thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I had the chance to red this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed this book, and the characters were likeable, I did feel like this moved a little fast, not so much the speed of the case itself but its almost like we were just getting the highlights of some of the scenes. I would be interested to read more about Nikki and Josh as I cannot see an easy happily ever after. I have some unanswered questions on Nikki's stalker, Newt, the show, what happens with her new career. All in all, cute story, likable humorous characters, would have rated higher if I didn't feel like some parts were rushed.

Trace Elements is a romantic suspense, mystery and adventure all rolled into one.
The story revolves around an actress Annika Trace (Nikki Gowen) being asked by the parents of a kidnapped little girl, Linzie, to visit their home to help the child recover from her traumatic ordeal. When Nikki meets FBI Special Agent Josh Saxon, the sparks fly and they work together to help Linzie recover enough to start speaking again and to identify her abductors.
The chemistry between Josh and Nikki is intense with lots of arguing and lots of make up sex.
The only thing I found implausible is that a 4 yr old's favorite show was adult tv describing sexual tension amidst the violent action in Nikki's FBI drama series.
An enjoyable quick read.

I liked the premise of the novel, Nikki is an actress on a Bones-like television show though she's the one with the gun, and when a little girl who is one of Nikki's biggest fans is the victim of a crime the real FBI brings her in to help.

I'm a fan of the enemies into lovers trope and we get that in spades between the faux special agent and the real special agent. I liked Josh and Nikki together, they're good for each other, but I never really felt the emotional connection between them.

If you're looking for a bit of romance, a mystery, excitement and a bit of action check out Trace Elements.

Reading Trace Elements was like watching an episode of a detective series on TV. I am not trying to be ironic, as the heroine was an actress in a detective show called in to help the authorities with a kidnapping case. But it honestly played in my head like an episode of Castle. Cue ominous music when the bad guy appears and drama galore. It was a quick, fun read, high on drama with a side order of love/hate sexual tension.

I really liked the story of this book..I liked the characters who were different but so similar at the same time...
I would have rated higher,if it weren't about the speed of the book..As I said,I liked the story and the characters but I felt we were moving too fast..For example,I loved the scene when they made love for the first time but we went to that point too fast..In fact,I was sure I missed some pages and I had to reread it just to be sure..

However, despite that, it was a good book and I really enjoyed it...

I liked this. I liked the idea behind it; a real FBI agent having to work with a TV FBI agent. It was different and I did enjoy it.

The relationship did appear to just sort of happen. Sure there was sexual tension between them but nothing verbal for a long time and then they were suddenly in bed with each other. It just happened a little too fast for me.

Other than the relationship, I enjoyed the rest of the book, the case, the characters, the sub-plot.
