Emily Jane Trent is a true romantic at heart. She writes steamy romantic stories about characters you'll get to know and love. If you like a love story with sex scenes that sizzle and a story that involves you both intellectually and emotionally, you'll find her books are for you.
Emily Jane Trent's "Captivated" might be the most boring New Adult title I've picked up to date. Entirely too introspective (without any kind of depth), repetitive, and plodding. It's not without promise in its respective theme/premise, but the way that the narrative reads out is extremely lifeless, non-kinetic. Part of the reason for this could be that the work differs from many New Adult novels in that it's written in third person. But even third person limited can work if it's sequenced well and allows for the characters to have palpable thoughts, dialogues, and tangible conflicts.
But Trent really doesn't make the most of using the device. Matter in point, I think I'll quote what I mentioned in another measure about the book that sums it up quite notably:
"...I think part of it may be the fact that not only is it written in third person, but there's barely any dialogue in the book. And what little dialogue there is does nothing for the characters of Adam and Ella - it's either repetitive (repeats information already established in the novel) or incredibly dry (like "Oh, he's incredibly cute, isn't he?" "Oh yes, he certainly is.") Gahhhh.
Also, if I have to read that the hero describes Ella as "soft and feminine" one more time, it will be too soon.
*looks at page*
Yeah...too soon."
Ugh. I guess I could recap the story, but not much of a point when Adam and Ella are really about as dull as the end of an unsharpened pencil. Even when we're introduced to Ella, she's supposed to be surfing, catches sight of Adam as she's taking a wave, and falls out. He ends up rescuing her. Then there's this really long and tedious introduction where she's like "Hi" and he's like "Hi," and she makes mention that it was his fault that she fell off her board, and he's like "Well, I can tell you're attracted to me." And then there are the long journal entries from Ella where she's like "Oh he's so cute, and he's from Brazil, but he's also Italian. He wasn't there at the beach today, I wonder if he'll be back tomorrow." And when he isn't, she's lamenting over her looks, like "If only I were beautiful like Kaiyla (her friend)...No, I had to get drab brown hair and no curves." (This is an actual quote from the book.)
And I'm thinking "Please tell me that the rest of the book isn't droning on like this."
And it is. =_______=
Another random passage of dialogue, taken directly from the book:
"So tell me about this guy," she called.
"You kknow, the guy who rescued me, you remember him." Ella replied, never showing her stride in the short walk to the beach. Her friend jogged to catch up.
"Oh that guy. He was hot. You've seen him again?"
"Yes, yesterday, and he promised he'd be back today."
"What's his name?"
"I don't know yet. I'm going to ask him today, but I know he's from Brazil, and he has this really romantic Italian accent, or sort of Italian, I think. Wait until you hear it."
I. Was. So. Bored. This information's actually repeated multiple times and considering the choppiness of the dialogue, when it was featured, it didn't help matters much. And there are passages dedicated to noticing his abs and hair and I'm just mentally saying "Where's the plot? Move on."
The diary entries (basically info-dumps) were pretty painful too from the heroine, such as:
"Today was amazing. I want him. I really do. I can tell you, diary, because you know I've never had anyone. Just Doug. But he doesn't count, you know that. I know I'm dreaming to think he wants me because I feel so inadequate. I see the women at the beach look at him. He could have his pick. Even Kaiyla wants him. But I'm sure she was just kidding, kind of.
If only I could do something to make myself look less plain Even then, I'm not sure. He's perfect. He really is. I think of him as golden because he shimmers in the sun. His hair is a golden brown, his skin is a golden tan, and his eyes are a golden amber. If his name were Adonis, it would fit.
He's built but not over-muscled. He has the legs of a surfer, but he must work out too, because he's so strong. My heart throbs when I'm near him. It's so loud he can hear it. I want his arms around me, his cheek against mine. He kissed my hand today, and my skin still tingles."
Yeah, there's more to that but I'm stopping there. Mind you, this information is already given earlier in the narrative when the hero interacts with the heroine, and they've only known each other a short time, so it's instalove in overdrive. It not only feels tedious, but just...not good.
It's like this even from the HERO's perspective. He goes on about how she's all "small and feminine" and this is repeated so many times. He's supposed to have all this so called exotic and mysterious charm, but I felt none of it.
And the ending made me feel cheated because it leaves on a cliffhanger with really a gimmicky way of leading into the next book. The hero has to leave for Brazil, the heroine doesn't know why, and it just ends like that.
No. Just no. Save your time and money on this one. It's not good.
Overall score: 0.5/5 stars
Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher.

Ella suffers at his father's hand since she was young. Her mother pays no attention to her and neglects her since she was the result of an unexpected/unwanted pregnancy. At age eighteen, she moves out from her home to get away from all the abuse. She moves in with a boyfriend and at first everything is fine with her and Doug. But as time goes by Doug as well verbally abuses her so she lefts him and moves in with her best friend.
Adam is a child prodigy. He is very good at computer and at a young age, he creates so many computer softwares that his father takes advantage of. His father forces him to create more and more. He doesn't have a good childhood because of his father. He is seen as a weirdo, freak, etc... as a child. Fortunately, when he turns eighteen, he breaks free from his father and creates his own business.
Adam rescues Ella when she falls off her surfing board and they are instantly draws to each other. No matter how hard he tries, he couldn't stay away from her and at the end decides to date her.
I enjoyed reading this book. Ella and Adam had been through so much and both had such a rough childhood but I was glad that they found each other. When they saw each other for the first time at the beach and he rescued her because she fell of her board. It was love at first sight with these two. At first he resisted seeing her again but of course he couldn't stay away and neither was Ella. They were meant to be together and I was glad they decided to give their relationship a try. Ella didn't have a family member who cared about her like Adam but it was good to see that she had Kaiyla as her best friend. Since there is a continuation of this book, I hoped Adam and Ella's relationship last because they were good for each other and even if something happen, I hope they fight to be with each other because what they had was very beautiful.
I first off have to say that I liked this book. It was such a sweet book! Ella is a shy girl who loves to read and is busy trying to write a novel. And a little bit 'damaged'. She loves surfing, so that is how she meets Adam one day at the beach when he rescues her from falling off her board, because she was staring at him and not paying attention.
Adam hot/surfer billionaire (who is also a child prodigy) sees Ella as well and there is just chemistry between them. He tries to stay away from her because he (just like her) has some secrets in his past which to him seems like a lot for someone to take on. But alas (yes I said alas, lol) he just can't stay away, and decides to get involved with her.
And that is how their love-story starts.
I enjoyed this book, cause it reminded me of reading a book that will end in happily ever after. But the book ends up in the air and now its got me hooked and I want to see what happens next.
Thank you Emily for sending me this book and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Adam and Ella's story is turning into a magical journey. Both, Adam and Ella have tragic and horrific past's that they both hate to tell each other about. But sometimes when you are falling for each other you have to tell the other person what makes you happy and sad. After a brief meeting in the water while surfing they found each other during a surfing accident that leaves there bodies to touch and feel each other. And that is all it took....Growing up neither Adam or Ella had the feel or touch of a loving childhood, maybe that is why they found each other during a surfing accident. Finally getting to know each other spiritually, emotionally and sexually ( did I tell you the SEX is amazing )....they both find happiness until one day when Adam leaves to go back to his place of birth,Brazil, not saying why he has to leave just that he had to go NOW and Ella doesn't know when he will return or if he will return....he says he will but will he......I can't wait to see what happens...did I mention the Amazing SEX and what a cliffhanger !!!!
I really wanted to like this book, especially after being provided with and ARC from the author.
Unfortunately it fell short for me, on several points.
The story premise is good, two people who have a mutual love of surfing, coming together despite the odds, and differences in their upbringings. However at the point of me stopping reading I can't really say that anything of interest had happened, apart from establishing that both Adam and Ella had massive Daddy issues which had coloured their formative years, and ensuring that both of them are suffering from emotional issues in their adult lives because of it.
There is also alot of repetition in the book, where it comes to Ella's initial internal dialogue, which is then pretty much repeated when she writes in her diary, and at points you then get the same thing again when she is talking to Adam or Kaiyla.
Emily's writing shows potential, as does this series, however at this point for me personally, it is far too drawn out.
How does this book have a 4 star rating? This was the most boring book I've read in my life. It's written in the 3rd person and does not flow well from character to character. If you were to add up the dialogue, and actual events the book would be about 5 pages. 99% of the book is filled with neurotic repetitive thoughts of Ella's "rough" upbringing and thoughts of low self esteem. Every single detail of her thoughts and feelings are written about at least 5 times over. I read the whole book thinking to myself "It has to get better. Maybe after their next conversation (2 chapters away)". Don't even get me started on the painful Diary entries. I will say that some of them span on for about 4 pages and most of them are exactly the same. NO CONVERSATION OR EVENT IN THE ENTIRE BOOK LASTED AS LONG AS THIS! After getting though the whole book I feel like I deserve an award, especially when it ended on a "cliffhanger".
First off let me say that I really enjoyed this book. At times I was like really did that happen and than I was feeling that Ella was cray cray and that she was a potential stalker and suicidal maybe because I have never been that consumed with a person before, but as the story went on it all made sense why she was the way that she was. It was an instant attraction for Adam and Ella although Adam wanted to not be with her, not because he didn't like her but because of his life and what that entailed. I loved the fact that I learned a little more about Adam and I look forward to seeing what will happen next with him and Ella
DNF at 62% Characters are dull Story is repetitive Dialogue is a bit wooden No interest in this story for me any longer. As I don't care enough or even like these characters. Too many similarities taken from books like Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey. Brooding secretive male and a damaged female needing to be rescued, but executed poorly.
I really don't k ow where to begin. Ella drove me crazy. Yes she had a rough childhood but my God move on. Adam also was another man in her life or was he. I could not complete. Sorry. I usually enjoy your books, but not this one.
WOW! Captivated grabbed me from the very first page. This is an awesome start to a four series book set. Adam and Ella will captivate you just like they did each other. Don't give up on this book. It is truly amazing. Read it in one day. It is sooooo good.
This is a wonderfully written story that kept me excited from beginning to end. I’m looking forward to reading much more about the love story of Adam and Ella.
This was my first read from Emily Jane Trent. I wasn't sure what to expect. I wasn't grabbed from the first page to the end. What I found is that the story has a mix of viewpoints. To me the book moved casually, just as we do in reality. The storyline and plot stayed true to the synopsis. I feel that, like me, the reader will expect something different than what they will find. I do not mean this as a negativity. I felt it was a nice change. I actually took the time to read this and I enjoyed that. I actually feel it was written this way on purpose so you didn't speed through a story that takes time. Again, resembling reality.
The character of Ella is complex. She is beautiful outside and in but was emotionally and mentally abused by her father, her mother and her ex boyfriend, Doug. The only person she has in her life to depend on is her bestie, Kailya Montgomery, and her roommate. Ella wants to know true love but her self-esteem and self-confidence has been torn from her. She now lives in a gloomy apartment, wears gloomy clothes, works at a gloomy bookstore and depends on a gloomy bus. Her true happiness only comes from surfing and trying to write a novel. The only person that knows EVERYTHING about Ella is her Daily Journal, who lives in her tablet. Suddenly one day she spots Adam.
The character of Adam shares Ella's complicity. He is Brazilian, gorgeous and was abused mentally and emotionally by his father. His mother was abused by his father everytime she tried to protect her son. His sister was left alone because she offered nothing of interest. All of this for money. Adam was sensitive and a genius. He was bullied when young because of this. Monetarily he is set for life, protected from his father and stays away from long-term relationships. Surfing is his true happiness. Then one day he spots Ella.
Kailya is perfect. She has perfect parents, an apartment she shares with Ella, perfect clothes, perfect job and perfect boyfriend, Steve. Her only wish is that Ella finds a true and perfect gentleman that will love her forever. She saved Ella from death. She will keep encouraging her always but there is no one but her. Then one day a guy saves her bestie. Ella meet Adam.
There are other characters who you will meet that has a part in Adam's and Ella's life that you will enjoy, as I did. Again, I compliment the author on her talent, ideas, writing style and how she brings complicity to a place of love. This story can be a standalone. The author does express this is part of a series. Yes, I do want to read the continuation. I feel trouble for everyone, with a capital T. Enjoy!
There was much I loved about this book where do I begin? Adam was a child prodigy with whom his father had taken advantage of. He spent his childhood and time as a teenager trying to make his father proud but his father only seemed to care about one thing: money and how Adam could support that. Thankfully when he became of age he managed to get his own company started which allowed him to take care of the two people he loved most: his mother and sister. Ella was always made to feel less than what she was. Her father was emotional abusive and her mother made her feel like a mistake she should've never given birth to. After an abusive relationship she moved with her friend who genuinely loved her like the sister she never had and the sister she left behind just won't forgive her for leaving her behind. I loved the romance in the book. Even though the attraction was clearly there from the moment they saw each other on the beach though they didn't give in to it. I loved that Adam adored her and at every turn let her know that. He wasn't pushy and domineering and wanting to know where she was every second of the day or strict on how she wore her clothes. This was a relief for me. Most billionaires in these stories are domineering Adam wasn't. He held such empathy which I absolutely loved. He was sensitive and attentive something she never had and not quite sure that she deserved. He appreciated his wealth but he never flaunted it Ella didn't seem to care about his money either just him. His words of adoration weren't over the top but exactly what a girl that suffered from years of emotional abuse needed to hear. I love the numerous phone conversations they had when apart. They seem to genuinely want to know about each other. It had a first love type of feel to it loved the anticipation of each moment they would have together. The build up to their first time was worth the wait. It almost brought me to tears. I never realized just how fragile Ella was until that moment. The moment on the boat was so intense yet romantic. I loved the ending so much but I didn't want it to end. I loved that he encouraged her to finish her novel. Not every guy encourages a woman to embrace her passion. I'm secretly hoping that Adam will miss her so much that he will send for her, I have no idea if video chats will be enough after the intense moments they have shared. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that ended. I’m looking forward to getting to know more about Adam and Ella.
Ella and Adam are drawn to each other from their very moment they see each other on the beach. He rescues Ella on the beach. Ella takes a fall in the ocean while surfing and Adam comes and saves the day. He leaves once she is safe but never introduces himself to her. He tries to distance himself from Ella, but is drawn to her. Ella can't stop thinking about him and hopes she will see him once again at the beach. They eventually see each other again and again and Ella starts to open up to him, although he has yet to do so.
Each chapter is filled with description, which I appreciated. This may not be to everyone's liking, but I had no problem with it. It is written in third person, but this does not take away from understanding the emotions of each character, even secondary characters such as kaiyla - I could understand how protected she was of Ella, and I was happy that Ella had a friend as great as her. Ella's diary entries were perfect to fully understand her emotions throughout the book. Wow, this book is soooo steamy! LOL ...these steamy scenes are pages long, not just one or two ,so if you enjoy that, you will not be disappointed.
M thoughts: With both main characters (Ella and Adam), I felt horrible for them!!Both suffering their own emotional abuse and feeling unloved by those who should have loved them without question. I don't think I have ever read a story where I felt the two characters were more perfect for each other than these two. This story was full of emotion! I was afraid this story would be a bit too slow for my liking at first, but it got better as the story progressed! I loved how much these characters had in common (love of surfing & how it was an escape for them, love for music , being told they were too sensitive, being emotionally abused in the past, feeling unloved). And there was so much more - these characters were meant for each other! Adam was very intuitive to Ella, understanding, loving, everything she needed. Their relationship to me is the definition of a soul mate. I loved how he would have music playing everywhere, like it was there soundtrack to their life or something. I loved how Ella's character was relatable in some ways. Most of us have felt loneliness, low self-esteem (at least once in our lives). We only wish to be as lucky to find someone as amazing as Adam. I loved this story and am excited to see it continue. This is book one of three and I cannot wait to see where their journey leads!
Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review :)
Adam and Ella's story is rather fast and complicated. They both have suffered in their childhood and it's because of their past that makes it complicated for them to move forward. Their was an instant connection when they first met that drives them crazy for one other throughout the book. It all seemed like a fantasy, yet it felt rushed to me. There were times when I felt frustrated getting to know the characters and with zero development in the story, it made the story incomplete.
Ella Walker has always wanted to be a fictional romance writer, but it's her past troubles that often get in the way. She has a terrible relationship with her mother and she barely talks to her or her sister. One of the things that helps her is writing in her diary, which she does constantly in the book. It's her way of expressing herself. She lives with her friend, Kaiyla, which is the completely opposite of her. She is a lot more outgoing, whereas Ella isn't much.
Adam Bianci is a software genius. He has had the talent to make new computer software since he was just a kid, but his father abused his talent and made himself rich not caring about Adam at all, but about what he was capable of doing. Adam grew up in a dysfunctional home, but he had his mother and sister when he needed them the most.
Both characters seem to be captivated with one another, it all seemed like a Romeo and Juliet kind of romance (without the ending part), it's just love at first sight for them. I really liked the overall idea of the story, it had potential to be great, but I found it too rushed. It was evident that they liked each other, but they kept going around in circles. Ella is a character that is constantly insecure and without any growth. Adam's past was revealed, but it ended the story with a cliffhanger (which I hate). The writing was all right, (poetic without any emotion at all). Overall, I'm giving this book a 3/5 rating, I will try to read the second one to see if it's any better, but not any time soon.
The Plot. I really liked the idea for this book. I felt like it had so much potential and that there were so many directions that this story could have taken. Yet as I read this book, there were these little details that kept annoying me. I felt like the book was extremely slow in some parts, and in others the story line was very rushed and there wasn’t a lot of detail. I also felt like Ella and Adam got too serious too fast. There wasn’t a lot of depth in their relationship and I felt like they both seemed to fall in love with the other too fast to be taken seriously.
Ella. I really tried to like Ella as a character but felt like she was way too whiny. And her bi-polar attitude got on my nerves so much. Throughout most the book I found myself flipping through pages when she had a psychotic breakdown. Then when Adam gives her the chance to talk about her family and past she spews out this woe-is-me speech. I can by sympathetic when someone has a hard childhood, but the way she spoke about it made her sound like she was looking for sympathy. Her weaknesses really got on my nerves and I had no respect for her.
Adam. He was a character that got on my nerves, but not as much as Ella. I got really annoyed when he wanted to know everything about Ella and wanted to grudge up her past, yet when it was about him conversation was a no-go. He actually got upset when she asked him questions about his family and I really wanted to yell at him to suck it up. I also thought it was kind of ridiculous how much it was repeated throughout the book what a sensitive child Adam was and how sensitive he still is. I couldn’t respect him because of how fake I felt his character was.
Overview. Overall this book had a mostly negative response from me. I liked the story line but didn’t like the characters. I couldn’t stand how much self-pity this book had. Maybe this author has some better books and I’ll check them out sometime, but otherwise this was a disappointing read.
Captivated begins when Ella Walker notices a man watching her while she's surfing. She loses concentration and falls into the wave. But she can't get back up for some reason, until a strong arm pulls her to safety and she knows it was the man who was watching her. From that moment on Ella was Captivated!
Adam, the man who saved Ella, couldn't stop thinking about her. She was so beautiful to him. He appealed to her like no other had since the moment he saw her he was Captivated. But he has things in his past he doesn't want to bring Ella into like his father for instance, and he mentions the name of another woman at one time as well, but there is no explanation about that at all during the book. As much as he fights he, he realizes that he's hurting himself, and Ella by fighting it in the first place. He knows he can't stay away now. So they form a relationship that is beautiful.
But Ella has her own insecurities that she faces being verbally abused almost all of her life. So it's hard for her to think Adam wants to be with her. But he does.
I have to say I didn't really like the book. At times it just felt so cheesy, and corny that it frustrated me. I liked Ella, but I didn't really like Adam. I hated how he wanted her to open herself up, but it still felt like he was keeping things from her. Then the ending was awful. It didn't answer anything at all, and just created a ton of questions. But none of these questions I really want to read more to find the answer to. I don't believe I will be reading the next book, and I didn't really care for this one all that much.
I feel really bad for saying this, after a author has written a book and put there hard work into a story, but if this book was a colour it would be beige, this story is so bland you get towards 75% in the book before anything really happens, and then thats not much to write home about, before that your just plowing through hoping that some thing will happen.
There is so much repetition in the book, where it comes to Ella’s initial internal dialogue, which is pretty much repeated when she writes in her diary, which i found to be really annoying she writes as though she has been in love with Adam for months and months, where in reality they’ve met a couple of times on the beach to surf for an hour?!?, and at points you then get the same thing again when she is talking to Adam or her friend Kaiyla.
Both Adam and Ella have deep daddy issues that have scared them throughout adulthood, so both Adam and Ella suffer form emotional issues, but you just dont feel there emotions through the writing it was just flat. The romance could have been so much more, i found it hard to believe that there was a romance at times, for most of the book its just Ella wishing and dreaming about Adam like a school girl with a crush. Adam constantly wanted for Ella to open up to him and tell him her life story, but he wouldnt tell he anything of himself until practically the end of the book. The ending of the story was horrible not a HEA or a cliff hanger, it just left you with lots of questions that i really cant be bothered to find the answers too in the next book, there’s nothing to draw you into the next book.
Sorry Emily Jane Trent but this story did nothing for me.
I was provided with a copy of this book by the author to give an honest review..
I must start off by saying that I really enjoy reading Emily's books, the way she writes catches my attention from the beginning and as I had the opportunity to read her novella series which I loved, I was so happy to get the opportunity to read her full length novel!
This book follows the story of Ella who has not had it easy through her life, not your usual parental physical abuse, but rather the emotional abuse and spirit crushing criticism of her father and the emotional neglect from her mother who is more interested in finding a new man every 15 minutes! Ella has her best friend who knows all about her past and is trying desperately to bring Ella out of her shell of low self-esteem, but she feels worthless and just wants to blend into the background, the only place she feels truly at peace is when she's out in the ocean riding a wave, that is until he catches her eye, which literally brings her crashing down!
Enter Adam, the exceptionally hot Italian billionaire! Ella is like no other women he has ever come into contact with, there is a deepens to her that he must get to know, but he wants to protect her and would becoming involved with him be whats best for her? He has his own family issues to deal with does he really want to involve anyone else?
The chemistry is instant between them and no matter how much they fight it, something's can't be stopped!
I don't want to say too much and ruin the story, but I would highly recommend this book!
All it takes is a moment to find your soul mate. For Adam and Ella it happens at the beach while Ella is riding an amazing wave and Adam watches from shore. Ella allows the man on the beach to distract her which causes her to crash which leads to Adam becoming her savior but that isn't the real attraction. Adam and Ella have both survived emotionally abusive childhoods – it's as if their souls knew the other would understand their past - from here we get to watch two people connect in a way they hadn't with anyone else before, their comfort around each other is instantaneous and surprising to both. The chemistry and romance is beautiful – Emily Jane Trent gives both characters the depth needed in this installment for you to really understand their issues – this allowed me to connect with both characters since the story is told from both points of view – and gave me a ton of reasons to root for/want these two people to be together. As we watch them grow closer, Adam does keep part of his past about his father from Ella, he really wants to keep her out of his world to protect Ella from what he describes as "evil" – but soon even he can't fight their attraction and let's just say the sex is hot when they do finally give in. We end this beautiful ride with Adam leaving for Brazil which makes me wonder … Will they be able to survive a long distance relationship? Will Adam return to California? Will Ella go to Brazil? Will Adam's father find out about Ella? Excited to read part 2 to see what happens next.
Do you believe in love at first sight? After seeing Adam for the first time, Ella believes. The attraction is mutual and unrelenting.
I normally do not read stories of surfing, or college kids, etc. I am more into a more mature approach and a little mystery. Having agreed to read this book, I started to skeptically wondering what sort of story this would turn out to be. Well, a few pages into the story, I realized this was not your typical romance. Yes it has all the ingredients: handsome male, young beautiful young woman, attraction, sex, etc. What I was not counting on was the depth of insight into the main characters and how their lives had evolved up to the point we meet them. These are not immature young adults. These characters may be young in age but have deep scars in their psyche that have forced them to mature and become self-reliant.
Their love affair is unique and beautiful. Seldom do you meet someone like Adam and Ella knows it. She is also so painfully shy and insecure around people, it is difficult for her to string two words together. With Adam, though, she comes alive and feels secure. Although surrounded in mystery, Adam makes it clear to Ella how he feels about her. The secret forces that control Adam prevent him from doing more than love her. I love how the author narrates this story and provides the insight into these characters as they grow together.
This is book #1 in Adam and Ella trilogy, Be sure to pick up the other two books and continue to read this story. It gets better and better.
This is the first book that I have read that is written by Emily Jane Trent. WOW - what an awesome author!!! I love the way that Emily uses her talent with works to describe everything that is going on and informing you of things that have happened in the characters past.
Ella (the main character) was abused, emotionally and mentally, but never really physically. But, no matter what type of abuse it is - it is still abuse. Whether it was by her father (who didn't love his daughter at all) or by an ex-boyfriend - it is still a situation that you do NOT want to be a part of. Adam (the other main character) was also abused. Adams father abused Adam mentally - and abused his Mother physically. All in all - his father is NOT a nice person!!! His father is very greedy and will do anything in his power to get Adam to give him what he wants - which is money money money. Adam and Ella have more than abuse in common. They also have the love of the ocean and surfing!! Not that this is a book that is possible to write a spoiler (it's a love story) -- but this is an awesomely written story that will really keep your attention.
There are some things that do make the story more interesting and that gives it a little bit of a cliffhanger and has you wanting to read more - even though the book has ended!!! Well, guess what -- book two (Charmed) is there just waiting to be read and it starts right where Captivated left off!!!
I really loved Ella and Adam's story, it is more like a 4.5 Star review for me. Could be a five but since it is part of a series it left off with a cliff hanger and I'm not that kinda girl.
At first it took me a little to get into this book. Very detailed and descriptive, it is also narrated, which is actually unique and different, so I had to get used to the writing style. Once I got past that I loved the story.
Both Ella and Adam are tormented souls and together need each other to overcome their pasts. She is from a childhood of never measuring up to her parents expectations and she holds a very low self-esteem of herself. He is a child prodigy, that his father has exploited for his own gain, but never gave Adam the satisfaction of knowing his worth.
They both are attracted to one another at first sight. She wants more of him, which is uniquely described through her diary entries. Through these entries we get to see all of Ella's insecurities and how Adam has affected her in such a short time. He wants her but is afraid to let her in because of his life and his father. He can not resist his attraction and tries to stay away but he keeps finding his way back to her.
At times I wanted to cry for both of their tormented souls and so happy when they were together. I can't wait to read the next part of their love story, as in this book it has only just begun!!!!!
Ella and Adam. Wow. They find each other doing what they both love to do. Surf. Surfing is the escape they have from dominant verbal abusive fathers and a mother (Ella's) whose only interest is in herself.
Ella, a very low self esteemed person, is attracted to Adam at first sight. So much so that she nearly drowns when she sees him on the shore while she is surfing. Adam saves her and everything changes for her. He motivates her to want to do something different, and not be the invisible person she has tried to be for so long. Meeting him gives her something to look forward to.
Adam, self made software billionaire, trys to stay away from Ella because he doesn't want to drag her into his complicated life. But she captivates him, and he finds himself going back to see her more and more.
There is a sweet, melancholy romance that developes between them. Both broken, yet loving. This author writes great sex scenes and is always very descriptive of places and characters. I enjoyed the read, and I tear up some at the end when they have to separate for a while. Will Ella make it? Will Adam come back for her? This is a series, so I will be looking forward to the next book to see what happens.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in place of an honest review.
Ella Walker doesn't have very good self-esteem. Between a mother who ignored her, a father who mentally abused her and a boyfriend who just emotionally abused her. It is a wonder that she is still able to get up every day and function. Surfing seems to be her outlet and the only thing she loves and enjoys doing.
Adam Bianci is a genius. He's dad just used him to make money and when he got older he left. Adam wanted the love of a father but got a man that just thought of himself instead of his family. So Adam uses his brain to work on his computer systems to help support his mom and sister. He has never been in love.
When these two meet there is this instant connection. Ella can't think of anything but Adam and wants a relationship with him. Adam tries to stay away to protect Ella from his past. There seems to be no help for either and it is something they just have to give into.
This is an emotional story that deals with many things. The author did an amazing job with the story line and brought out the most in her characters. I had to know there would be a cliffhanger. I can't wait to read the next one. I hope that nothing happens that will completely destroy Ella.
