Rate this book
A Secret The Size Of Texas

Veterinarian Lexi Lawson has her hands full—and not just when she's delivering foals at the Langtry family's ranch. Working there forces Lexi to confront Shane Langtry, the man who broke her heart. True, he seems different now—more generous, more grounded. But Lexi isn't fooled: Shane lives for rodeo competition and nothing else. Besides, after what he did to her, there's no way she'd take him back.

Long ago, when they were in love, Lexi hid a terrible secret from Shane—one she planned to keep forever. But when he learns the truth, she's forced to choose between the past she left behind…and the future they might still find together.

I don't have an opening quote for this, which is a bad sign.

This book isn't really a romance. It's more about... other stuff. Lexi got pregnant when she was 18 with her boyfriend, Shane. When she went to go tell Shane about it, before she could tell him, he announced he had cheated on her with some random woman he picked up and had gotten her pregnant and was going to marry said woman. He broke up with Lexi.

Lexi was broken-hearted. She carried the pregnancy to term, but didn't tell anyone (not her parents, not her sister) that she was pregnant. She gave up the baby to adoption because she felt it was the right thing to do.

Shane eventually got divorced and now through some questionable circumstances Lexi and Shane are working together on a ranch. Even more unlikely is that, out of the blue, their 13-year-old son comes to the ranch to complete a cowboy-training program. Shane, of course, has no idea he's fathered this child and Lexi is freaking out about the son she thought she'd never meet.

ANALYSIS

I didn't like Shane. He cheated on his woman. Couldn't stay loyal to his woman. Told his woman he wouldn't use birth control, she got pregnant. Renee is trying to say that now he is 'different,' but he didn't seem that different to me. He's still self-centered, thinks he's God's gift to women, flirts with every woman he sees AND thinks every woman he sees is interested in having sex with him. BLECK. Gross and obnoxious. Another character is like, "Shane, you've been celibate for MONTHS! Clearly that means you love Lexi!" And I'm like, "Months!?!?! Do you expect me to be impressed that he's kept his dick in his pants for MONTHS!?!?! What kind of fuckery is this!!?!?!?" LAME.

I can't tell you how little respect I have for a 'man' who refuses to wear protection, sleeps with tons of women, is a cheater, and is probably spreading STDs around like mayonnaise.

The best part of this book is probably the fact that when everything comes to light, Lexi is completely unapologetic. Shane is like, "You betrayed me! You kept my son from me!" and she's basically like, "You were/are trash. I won't apologize and I don't regret it."

GOOD FOR HER.

"But, Carmen! Don't fathers have rights?"

C'mon. It's ALWAYS the woman's fault. Right? No matter what, no matter what choice is made, the woman is blamed, hated, and also she has to take complete responsibility. When men do wrong, it's like, "Oh, he's a man, what can you expect? Men are shit." Whereas women, no matter WHAT they do, are hated, blamed, made to feel guilty... and THEY are the ones who nine times out of time end up doing the majority - the vast majority - of the work when it comes to marriage and children.

This piece of shit a.) refused to wear protection, b.) cheated on his woman, c.) got another woman pregnant, d.) dumped her and married the ONS. I don't really think he has a leg to stand on here. Lexi went through the pregnancy completely alone. She gave the child up for adoption to a loving and well-off family. Child turned out great. Lexi went on to become an equine veterinarian. Shane got married to his evil ONS, divorced her, got to fuck every woman he wanted to for another THIRTEEN YEARS. She, of course, probably never got to have sex with another man because it's okay for men to sleep around, but terrible and awful when women do it.

But now he's been celibate FOR MONTHS! Wow, does he want a gold star?!?!! FUCK YOU, SHANE. Although not literally, because you're trash.

So. Yeah. Not really a romance. More a book about dealing with adoption and birth parents and blah blah blah.

HOW'S THE SEX, CARMEN?

Nobody has sex in this book.

TL;DR Not really a romance. I thought the hero was trash, despite Renee's weak, pathetic efforts to convince me he 'has changed.' Good on Lexi for refusing to apologize to Shane. She blatantly calls him on his shit. That was about the highlight of the book for me. Sadly, they end up together, but you can't have everything.

I love this next book in the Ramblewood Series. Even though it's part of a series, it definitely stands on its own. I loved Lexi's "secret". Definitely not what I expected it to be! Great story!

Very good book. Lexi came back to Ramblewood to work after ten years away, even though she knew she would be around Shane again. They had been in love but while she was away at school Shane had had a one night stand with a rodeo groupie. That woman ended up pregnant, so Shane broke things off with Lexi and married the other woman. He later found out that the child wasn't his and ended up divorced and childless. Shane is still a rodeo star and has also started a rodeo school with his family. Being around Lexi has shown him that he would really like to have her back in his life, if she'll only forgive him. But then something comes up that really changes their relationship.

I liked both Lexi and Shane, though there were times that he irritated me. He comes across as pretty self centered for a good share of the book. He is a rodeo rider and focused on winning a championship. He is also very charming and a flirt who has had the reputation of being something of a womanizer. He has admitted his mistake that caused his breakup with Lexi and would really like a second chance with her. He's finally gotten to the point where she'll speak to him, but he wants more. He is still in love with her but doesn't want to admit it. He is also busy with the rodeo school and he works a lot with one of the young students who ends up playing a huge part in the story. There is a really terrific scene with Shane and Hunter at the diner, where thirteen year old Hunter is giving Shane advice about women. Shane spends a lot of time thinking about his rodeo goal and also an offer to do a reality show and what they will do for him. Things seem to be getting better with Lexi when he finds out about a secret she's been keeping from him. He doesn't react well and Lexi really blasts him with some things he had never thought about. It was a real eye opener for him and really gave him something to think about. Once he adjusted to the news I loved seeing the way he and Lexi dealt with it together and how it made their relationship stronger.

Lexi had been heartbroken when Shane broke up with her. She transferred schools out of Colorado and rarely came home to visit over the next ten years so that she wouldn't see him. When she was offered a job back home doing what she loved she couldn't stay away any longer. Being around Shane is hard because she is still attracted to him. There are times that she sees changes in him, but she's not sure she can trust him. Spending more time around Shane and his students makes her think more about their past and the secret she kept from him. She never intended to tell anyone until it was discovered and she had no choice. I really liked the fact that she had made her decision for all the right reasons and stood by it even in the face of Shane's anger. I liked the way that she stood up for herself and told him off for his attitude. She had gone through a lot of heartache back then and also now as she searches for the truth. I really enjoyed seeing her able to work things out with Shane. The ending was fantastic.

I loved the part played by Hunter. He was a fun kid and pretty smart for a thirteen year old. I loved his hero worship of Shane, and also that he saw Shane as a real person who makes mistakes. It was fun to see him give Shane a hard time about girls. I loved his reactions to the birth of the foal.

I got this as a first reads giveaway, and I just could not get into it. The fact that it started out with intense discussion of surrogate pregnancy in horses didn't help with that problem, believe you me.

I had pretty much figured out what Lexie's secret was before I even started the book, so it wasn't particularly suspenseful. None of the characters were particularly interesting, and to be honest I found Shane to be slightly annoying. No one in the story was particularly realistic. How is it that none of them really seemed to have moved on with their lives in around a decade? Ridiculous.

Could not wait to be taken back to "Ramblewood" again and was not disappointed. I love how Amanda paints a picture of this town and the people in it to make you feel like you are there. Just like with the first two books in the series I could not put the book down and was missing "Ramblewood" when it was over. I love how her writing just flows and how the book takes you there. A must read!!

Loved the whole cast of characters and the story. It was a quick read but I wish it was longer! I did not read the two previous books prior to reading this but will be soon!

While I don't usually enjoy books with this particular trope, I was completely engrossed in Blame it on the Rodeo. Ignoring the too convenient circumstances that bring young Hunter back into Lexi's life, her anxiety and anguish over the past eat away at her, and I found her completely sympathetic. Shane had a LOT of growing up to do, and I despaired that he would ever be the kind of loving, supportive man Lexi needed, but miracle of miracles, love finally won out in the end. Great read.

A very interesting book to read. I wasn't sure at the beginning but it certainly was a well written book. One I enjoyed with lots of twists and turns. How could this not be when you realize what a rodeo is. Well done and worth the read.

I received this as a First Reads Giveaway book, years ago I used to read the Harlequin Romance books but had gotten away from them. So this wasn't really the type of book I would normally read. But after the first few chapters of where I really felt the author was spilling her wheels, as she just seemed to keep repeating things over and over so started kind of loosing me; but then the story picked up and turned into a really nice one.

I liked it also because she included actual issues of vet care. Teaching the reader about things they may not already know about (a birth of an all white baby with blue eyes)etc. I have a daughter that attends a University as a Pre-Vet student and she even found that part interesting as well something after I told her about said 'I'll look that up and research it a little.'

The storyline you kind of know where it's going, after all it is a Romance...but the storyline and characters are good and you will be wrapped in their world for a while. And although this is the third book in this series you won't be lost if you haven't read the other two (I hadn't read those and I felt I was okay) The author does a good job putting in just enough 'past' where the reader doesn't get lost wondering what happened in the previous books.

Also with this being a Romance I figured there would be sex scenes but there wasn't any. So this book would be okay for a pre teen to read as well. Without going into 'adult' details they shouldn't be exposed to.

Just a good over all book

Full of heartbreak and struggle, this is a story of two people who still love each other but can't forget the past. And when the past comes calling, will they be able to overcome what will be seen as the worst betrayal of all?

Thirteen years ago, Shane betrayed Lexi and cheated on her, leaving her in an impossible leave situation. Thinking he had gotten the other girl pregnant he marries her. With her heart broken, and pregnant, she goes off to college and gives up the baby. Without ever telling Shane about the baby.

But things have a way of coming back around. With the Ride 'Em High rodeo school now open, the first class arrives. And when Lexi sees Hunter she knows. But she has to know for sure. Hiring a P.I. who just happens to be Shane's best friend, she goes ahead with her case putting him in an awkward position. But her feelings for Shane have never changed and with this secret between them, she is afraid he will hate her forever.

Shane is surprised with his new class and especially the talented 13 yr old Hunter. And his desire to get Lexi back with him is foremost in his mind. One minute she melts in his arms, the next she pushes him away. And lately she is just completely different. Can he make her see that he has changed his ways and has only ever loved her? Can Lexi keep this secret between them and still be with Shane, or will it come out and he hate her for the ultimate betrayal?

I received this book through First Reads. It is a signed copy and Ms. Renee even took the time to address it to me! It was a simple little touch that delighted me.

This is not the type of book that I would usually pick to read - it's got cowboys, rodeos, drama - it's just not my usual cup of tea. After this book, I'm definitely going to be reading more. Specifically from Ramblewood and Ms. Renee. It was a quick read that was fun, well-written, and just really lovely. I appreciated the drama in the story and the way it was handled by the characters. It intrigued me rather than repelled me. The characters are all very realistic and three-dimensional. They are so well-written and developed - surprising in a book this short. Lexi and Shane were wonderfully developed and - I really cannot stress this enough - realistic. They reacted to events appropriately and like adults. I want to know the stories of the other characters as well. While I think the kids were portrayed as more mature than is probably believable, it is a minor hiccup.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Ms. Renee! It was a delightful read and my only criticism would be that some of the dialogue is awkward, especially regarding scenes with Hunter. Otherwise, it is a very fun and well-written book with realistic characters!

In Blame It on the Rodeo by Amanda Renee, Lexi Lawson has been keeping a secret for the past thirteen years from Shane Langtry. He was the love of her life and her everything, but when he cheated on her and got another girl pregnant, his parents made him marry her, leaving Lexi hurt and alone.

Now Lexi is a veterinarian and has returned home to work with the Langtry family. But that does not mean that she has forgiven Shane, even though soon after the birth of his supposed son the real father came to claim his child, the fact that he cheated on her is not something that Lexi could forgive easily. And due to his infidelity she had to make a choice that changed her life and a secret she has kept from everyone for the past thirteen years. Read More...

I won this book on Goodreads Firstreads.

Lexi and Shane have loved each other since they were teenagers but a past filled with betrayal and secrets lies between them. Will their love be enough to overcome their heartbreaking past?

I really disliked Shane, he was selfish and egotistical. His actions hurt the woman he swore he loved and cost him greatly. His actions did not match up to his words. He swore he loved Lexi but cheated on her, got some other girl pregnant, and married the girl. Then when he found out the other girl lied, and they got divorced. What does he do? He still swears he loves her but parades around his conquests. I thought Lexi deserved better than that.

This book was very good. I loved that the main characters had a connection from the beginning. Most books are more of the "love at first sight" types so to be able to be apart of their past, present and future was very refreshing for me. The only negative thing I really had about it was the ending seemed to drag. This is very unusual for me because I typically feel endings are rushed but this one seemed too long. Overall a good read. I do recommend it!

I like this book, but too many characters were introduced if you haven't read the other books in the series. The story was a stand-alone, all the extra characters were unnecessary. Trying to remember who a character was and if they had been mentioned before took me out of the story several times.

Lexi has a secret. Her job requires her to work with Shane who unknowingly shares her secret. They used to have a relationship but as she went off to college and he got married, it ended. They are slowly working their way back when the secret comes out. Nice rodeo information.
