James is a New Yorker who feels stuck in life. He lacks confidence and holds a job that doesn't satisfy him. When he wakes up in the middle of the desert, he soon finds out he's not alone. As he wanders through a dune sea with Barry, they try to figure out how and why they're there. Though the answers they receive aren't the ones they were expecting.
My debut book The Place We Go To In Between is out March 7th!
Brett Nolan is professionally an audio engineer. During Covid, he rediscovered his love for reading, and through that, discovered his love for writing. He started a few books prior to this story but this is the first book he fully finished. This book is the first of many that he plans to release.
As well as writing, he is a part of three musical projects titled AnotherMay, Motels At Midnight, and Designation.
From the moment I picked up this book, I was drawn in by the beautifully written dialogue and vivid imagery. The author's writing style is easy to follow and well-detailed, which made it a refreshing read.
"The Place We Go to in Between" by Brett Nolan is a hauntingly beautiful novel that explores themes of memory, identity, and the afterlife. The book is about a man named James who wakes up with no memory of his past and discovers that he's caught between the living and the dead. Nolan's prose is elegant and evocative, drawing the reader into James's surreal and often terrifying experiences. The world-building is vivid and immersive, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that blurs the line between reality and the supernatural. As James tries to piece together his past and find his place in this strange new world, he encounters a cast of memorable characters, each with their own secrets and agendas. The relationships that develop between them are complex and nuanced, adding depth and emotional resonance to the story. What I appreciated most about "The Place We Go to in Between" is its exploration of the human psyche and the ways in which our memories shape our sense of self. The novel's meditations on life, death, and what comes after are thought-provoking and deeply moving, leaving a lasting impression on the reader. Overall, "The Place We Go to in Between" is a stunning work of literary fiction that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a captivating and thought-provoking read. Brett Nolan is a gifted writer, and I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.

"I scan the inside of the car for a map of the rail system but find nothing. No ads or anything else. Only bare metal. It might’ve been on here at one point, only to be aged to dust by time. Even stagnant time ages you."
This book kept me interested all the way through to find out what was happening, but more than that, it helped me reflect on parts of my own life in a new way. The ending was abrupt, but made perfect sense in the context of the story. Good read overall, and I'd love to see what the author does next.
So well written. I love when authors can make me feel like I am in the book and this author did a great job doing that. As I was reading, I felt like I was in the desert and at one point felt like my skin was sunburned just as the characters in the story. My attention was captured from the very first page. I couldn’t put the book down! Great read from start to finish!
If you want to be sucked into a different world then this is a must read. Mr. Nolan really knows how to take you from your couch into his world. As I was reading it I was living it. By far one of the best books I have read! I strongly recommend it! You’re not gonna want to put it down.
