Forced to live behind a lie because of a promise he made to his sister, Kurt's been celibate for twelve years. It's not so much the sex he misses, but the chance at a family like the one his parents brought him up to expect. Then he meets Sasha, and it becomes all about the sex. Though he tries hard to resist, Sasha's just too damn gorgeous, and Sasha wants him. So why not just give in?
Throwing himself with abandon into the Sydney gay scene, millionaire Sasha Harrison becomes playboy celebrity known to everyone as “Silver.” It was fun at first, but after five years of being the media's meal ticket he now just wants to be left alone. Hounded by reporters, he hides out with Kurt, the one guy who has no idea who he is, or was. But that's the problem. Kurt doesn't realize Sasha's not used to being turned down, and Sasha's not used to being with nice guys.
Penny is a complete romantic who believes everyone can fall in love if only they’ll open their heart to the possibility, which is why she writes those hot, erotic stories that will always have a happily ever after. However, it doesn’t mean she’ll necessarily make it easy for her men to get there. A lover of things that go bump in the night, Penny’s imagination can sometimes run riot, so magic mirrors and evil dolls is only the beginning.
Sasha- “I just wanted to give them a place they could come to, somewhere they would feel less alone. I wanted them to have something I didn’t: a chance to know there was something beyond the dark clouds on the horizon.” Kurt- “A silver lining.” Sasha-”Yeah, something like that.”
Behind Every Cloud by Penny Brandon is the story of Kurt Donaldson, a man forced to live a lie because of a promise he made to his sister, and Sasha Harrison, a young man rebelling against his parents’ attempt to control his life. Kurt buries himself in work, finding it easier to be celibate, and using beautiful women as a cover to hide behind. Sasha has spent the past five years rebelling agaist his parents’ attempt to control his life by living a wild lifestyle, and building a reputation as a playboy celebrity that the media and the public known as “Silver’. Tired of living in the limelight as fodder for paparazzi and tabloids, he finds the perfect place to hide after Kurt rescues him from a man who had drugged hid drink. Kurt has no idea who Sasha really is, and offers him a place to stay when Sasha tells Kurt that he’s an actor who has been thrown out of his apartment, and has nowhere to go. Will their growing relationship survive when Kurt finds out who Sasha really is?
This is a character driven story with a smooth plot flow. The charactershave problems that are all too common and this makes them genuine, complex, and three dimensional. We get a great backstory that shows where the characters come from, and how the past has affected their present. The men are sexy, and the sex is hot, pasionate, and VERY imaginative without being tacky. The author’s writing style is clean, easy to understand, and to the point. I love the way the author shows how all too often, people hide who they really are, and let other people’s perception define how they live their lives. Although a major misunderstanding threatens the relationship, the story does have a HEA ending. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, and would definitely encourage you to check it out for yourself.
My biggest issue with this book was Kurt taking the drugged Sasha home. 911--the only option in the real world. Unless he was in danger staying at the club, it was stupid to move him. That being said, I liked the book. I even understood why Kurt found it hard to come out of the closet to his sister. Holding onto a secret so long makes it almost impossible to let it go. I do think the "love" between the MC was a bit too fast. Developing a love story with secrets involved must be hard. How to show the growth in the relationship while there's a big fat gaping hole of info missing? Super hard. Also, I wished there was more interaction between Sasha, Kurt and others. For the most part there were only three people in the story--no friends or coworkers, nada. It was like they were in a bubble. It was a well written book, but I like a more expansive story.
This is a cotton candy read. If you don't like to reads having one MC as a twink, this is not the book for you. Sasha is definitely that. He's also sweet, kind and afraid. As I said, it's a sweet read about a man in the closet falling in love with a twink. If you're looking for sugar sweet, this is it. Oh, and lots of hot sex.
Kurt is firmly in the closet. At first I wondered if he was bisexual but as the book went on I realized he was putting on a front. Kurt put himself in the closet at first to make sure nobody tried to take his sister away from him after the loss of their parents. Then it was his need to be successful that kept him from being with a man.
One night out at a club Kurt sees a man at the bar slip a pill into a drink and carry it off. He warns security who try to hunt the man down based on his description but Kurt finds him first. They scuffle but the guy takes off with security chasing him, so Kurt takes it upon himself to check on the gorgeous long-haired guy who was drugged. Brilliantly (insert sarcasm) , Kurt thinks he must rush the drugged beauty out of the club, speaking to no one. Then the guy is so messed up he can’t tell him where he lives so Kurt takes him home with him. The man, who Kurt is able to learn is named Sasha, insists that Kurt stay by his side.
When Sasha wakes up in the morning things are weird. He has no idea how he got there or who the guy he woke up with is. Kurt is obviously one of the few people in Sydney who don’t know him as the rich, gay, playboy socialite “Silver”. Sasha sees no reason to tell him and finds it nice to get to be himself without all the preconceived notions that come along with playing the part of Silver. A parting heated kiss leaves them both confused but Sasha needs to get back to his reality. The paparazzi are there and question him about his scene at the club the night before. He honestly only knows what Kurt told him but doesn’t want to give them the story they all seem to want. Sasha has been trying is hardest to get out of the spotlight. As soon as he escapes the paparazzi, he realizes somebody has been in his apartment. Sasha no longer feels safe in his apartment. All his other properties have been compromised. His parents are no help. So he returns to the last place he felt safe. With Kurt.
Kurt thought he’d seen the last of the long-haired temptation named Sasha. So, he’s surprised to see him in his apartment that night giving him a story about needing a place to stay. Kurt sees Sasha needs a place to stay and can’t turn him out. Sasha sees the want in Kurt’s eyes but can’t push him too far too quickly. They avoid and dance around the truth that they want each other and keep their secrets. But their attraction won’t be denied.
This started off with some good potential that had some really unrealistic moments. Then everything leveled out and it turned into a hot little romance with likable characters that were good together. This is one of those that I think a few tweaks here and there would have made it a pretty damn good book.
I just couldn’t help but think Sasha having all that money and forcing himself on Kurt, who obviously didn’t want him there, was not believable. As the book went on I settled into but I just thought he had other options. Everything between Kurt and Sasha at the beginning was kind of uncomfortable. Kurt’s cock thickening repeatedly while Sasha is roofied was a little creepy. No, he never acted on it but one boner would have been enough.
The sex in this was pretty hot. Kurt having denied himself for twelve years made for some intense desire. Sasha thrived on being wanted for who he really was and not for his status or money. I think their story was a pretty good one minus those moments towards the beginning of the book.
When I started reading Beyond Every Cloud I fell in love with Kurt, Sasha and their story. I got a really good vibe from these two and the more I read the more in love I got but about three quarters of the way in sadly things began to unravel.
The characters are great, their chemistry was evident and there were a lot of awwe moments for me along with moments of feeling sad for both of them. I loved that they didn’t fall into bed immediately and the way Sasha helps Kurt out of the closet he so firmly put himself in but not by talking about it he does it by just being Sasha which shows Kurt what’s been missing in his life.
Along with the love story, Beyond Every Cloud has a small mystery and this is what causes things to fall apart for me. It started out well enough, I couldn’t wait to find out what was up with Sasha and I kept waiting for the big reveal. We’re told by Sasha that he’s done some really horrible things but none of that was explained adequately and the explanation that was given had me scratching my head, if that was all there was it just didn’t seem bad enough for the way he acted. I feel like a huge piece of this story was missing.
I loved that these two got their HEA and I loved them together I just wish there had of been more to the rest of the story. Even with the small issues I had this is still a great love story a bit stereo typical but because I adored Sasha I overlooked that. With a few small changes Beyond Every Cloud would have been a 5 star read.
Let me start this by saying, OH MY GOSH I think I’m in love with Kurt. I mean seriously, you can’t read this book and not feel something for the man. Shoot you can’t read the blurb and not be like “no way honey!” Honestly, right from the start he pulled on my heart strings and wouldn’t let go.
Now Sasha, I have mixed emotions about him, I think it’s because he did what he did with Kurt. While I do understand what he was going through, it was still upsetting watching him do that. But back to Sasha, I think that his character was very well portrayed during the book. I liked how we were able to get to know Sasha, not Silver.
Kurt, I felt for during the book. What he had been through in his life was unthinkable and then what he had put himself through was even worse. This is the first book I have read from this author and I think that they did very well conveying the feelings that Kurt had, along with what he was going through after meeting Sasha.
I enjoyed that this book wasn’t completely about sex; there was the actual story that took place. The drama that takes place in the story was so amazingly well written that it left you wanting to know more. It left me wondering what was going to happen between Kurt and Sasha, and hoping that things would work out for everyone.
All in all, I completely enjoyed this book and I will be sure to look into other books by this author!
wo men are in hiding for very different reasons. For Kurt, his over-dedicated sense of guilt over not being present when his parents were involved in a fatal car accident, leaves him tied emotionally to a sister who, even though married, he still feels he must shield. Hence, he has denied himself any male companionship for over 12 years and has never come out to his sister. Every day, working himself nearly to the brink of exhaustion, he hides within his career and his barren apartment, living a mer half life. Across the city, another man is frantically attempting to escape a foolishly indulgent past that continues to plague him despite his hermit like status. The paparazzi follow Sasha (or SIlver as they refer to him) relentlessly and now a mysterious stalker is after him. Meanwhile a shady reporter is determined to expose Sasha's former affair with a politician who hid the fact that he was married from Sasha.
Fate brings these two men together on the very night that Sasha's stalker makes his move and drugs his drink, leaving Kurt no choice but to take a very incoherent Sasha home to his place for the night. What neither man realizes is that one night will morph into something more and the closet that Kurt hides in as well as the walls Sasha has built to protect his heart are both about to come tumbling down.
Behind Every Cloud by Penny Brandon had the potential to be an edgy romance that had a good balance of angst and sweetness. Unfortunately there were a few hitches along the way that left what I felt were some glaring holes in this mystery cum romance. While singly, many of these plot points could have been overlooked but as they rolled right into one another, I felt myself increasingly frustrated over the author's choices. In my opinion there were a few too many strange elements in this novel that did not gel. Because of that, the veracity--the truth of the story faltered and the characters became less and less believable.
For me, if one is going to write a contemporary fiction piece then the more the author can make the story true to itself, the better it becomes. For instance, take the setting of this novel. Until the city of Sydney was mentioned, I could have sworn to you we were in a beach resort area in America. Not only was there no Australian vernacular used, neither were there any quaint colloquialisms or native customs practiced. I recently spent ten days in both Melbourne and Sydney and was immediately struck by all the cultural differences. From the way in which they express themselves to their daily routines, Aussies could not have been more enchanting or different. Yet, here I was reading a novel with the main setting being Australia and I truly had no idea this was where these men lived. I tend not to read blurbs as I like the story to be fresh for me. So, I honestly stopped dead in this novel when I finally understood where these characters lived. Then I was torn again and again from the plot because they were so UN-Aussie--it just didn't make sense.
However, the bigger issue for me was the premise behind the twelve year self-imposed celibacy by Kurt. I wasn't sure why Kurt's parents insisted he not tell his sister Kennedy that he was gay, after all she was a teenager and I would think more than able to handle that kind of revelation. Then, after his parent's fatal accident, the idea that police officers told a 14-year old girl that her parents were just killed and then left her alone based on her assertion that her brother was coming home just staggered me. Surely they would not have baldly told her the news and then left her there in the house by herself? Then we were to understand that she was there for three days all alone? Okay, so if I stretched my disbelief just a bit I could buy that' but then for Kurt to harbor such guilt about circumstances that were beyond his control even after his sister was married and pregnant that he could not bring himself to date? I get that he was unsure about telling her he was gay but surely he had to have met some suitable guy somewhere in twelve long years?
Gradually, the little things in the novel that began to pile up and irritate me, yank me out of the story and had me just shaking my head at the lack of believability. Plot points such as Sasha claiming to be an out of work actor, yet having both food and clothing delivered while Kurt was out--where was the money coming from if he had no job? Why didn't Kurt question that? Or the tattoo that Kurt managed to get in the few days the two men were separated that mimicked Sasha's own and was strategically placed on his anatomy so that the mere idea of make-up sex for Kurt should have been a definite no. Yet, somehow it magically healed in less than a weeks' time?
After a while, all the inconsistencies began to snowball and made this novel truly frustrating to read and terribly hard to concentrate on. All the small glitches turned what could have been a delightful romance into just a so-so read. Penny Brandon is a new author for me and I think she has a real knack for story telling but needs to edit more and be true to her story lines. Behind Every Cloud had some good moments but overall it was lacking the elements it needed to make it a great novel.
A family man at heart, Kurt didn't want to appear unreliable to his sister, not after promising to look after her when their parents died, so he stayed true to his promise and denied his own desires. Then he meets Sasha, who tests every moral code Kurt has ever made. He tries to resist, but every day he's finding it harder and harder to not give in and take what Sasha's offering.
Sasha, aka Silver, a playboy millionaire, finds himself in Kurt's apartment, and he wants to stay there because Kurt doesn't know who he is. After five years being hounded by the media, Sasha just wants to be left alone, he wants anonymity. He also wants Kurt, but Kurt's resisting, and Sasha's not quite sure what to do about it. Seducing him would work, but he has a feeling Kurt might just want more than sex, and Sasha knows he can't give him any more than that.
As long as this book was, very little actually happened! I nearly gave up half way through and was left with a ho hum, is that all? feeling at the end.
I also had to stop myself from thinking Sasha was a woman (multiple times). He is obviously androgynous in appearance and tends towards feminine clothing. I have read many books with androgynous MC's and they still come across as male and the books are definitely m/m, yet this is the first time the style of writing has me visualising a woman. Sasha's reactions, language, emotions, and how Kurt treats him all scream M/F romance (I don't think I'm explaining this very well, but it's not easy to explain what/why the characters left me with this impression)
