What happens when a “tech guy” with a love for history gets laid off during The Great Recession of 2008? You get Thomas MacEntee, a genealogy professional based in the United States who is also a blogger, educator, author, social media connector, online community builder and more.
Thomas was laid off after a 25-year career in the information technology field, so he started his own genealogy-related business called High Definition Genealogy. He also created an online community of over 3,000 family history bloggers known as GeneaBloggers. His most recent endeavor, Hack Genealogy, is an attempt to “re-purpose today’s technology for tomorrow’s genealogy.”
Thomas describes himself as a lifelong learner with a background in a multitude of topics who has finally figured out what he does best: teach, inspire, instigate, and serve as a curator and go-to-guy for concept nurturing and inspiration. Thomas is a big believer in success, and that we all succeed when we help each other find success.
The strategy suggested in this book would certainly be an improvement for a lot of people who currently have bad password habits. But, it could definitely be improved upon. The part about having something like your birthday as the core part of your password is probably not the best advice, even if the other parts of the password make it harder to guess.
There are also plenty of articles illustrating similar strategies that can be found with a quick Google search.
The trick is nice but it is not perfect. This days you need to change your password every few month. The trick in the book suggest to add a number to the password that you can change each time you need to change the password. The problem Is that you need to remember that number or to write it down. The purpose of this book is to let you remember your password for each site without writing it down. Other then that its not a bad trick.
This very short book outlines a system for creating and remembering strong-level passwords. It probably wouldn't stop someone who really wanted in very long, but there's not much that would. Still, I haven't forgotten my passwords since I stared using this system.
I like this idea. I cannot even remember half of my passwords right now,. If my password spreadsheet fails then I am in trouble. But I could reset all my passwords then.
