A black hooded figure suddenly appeared behind her. She gasped and her brown eyes grew wide. Nathan watched helplessly as a small trickle of blood fell from her mouth.

Other hooded figures appeared; their silver swords clutched upright against their chests. Nathan held tight to her lifeless body while trying to fight back the tears that swelled in his eyes. “No,” he cried. “No!”

Nineteen-year-old Nathan Urye is supposed to be having a relaxing summer as a camp counselor but ever since he started having nightmares about a beautiful girl being hunted by flesh-clawing monsters, his life has been anything but normal.

Soon, Nathan discovers that the sleepy college town of Cahokia Falls is far from ordinary when two unexplained deaths rock the town and campus. Who or what is behind the murders? Does it have anything to do with the newly-discovered cave symbol? And what about the spine-chilling campfire stories about ancient tribal beliefs and mystical legends?

For Nathan Urye, things just keep getting creepier and creepier, and now it appears that everyone at camp is in danger…

I read this book over the summer as a beta reader and I really enjoyed it. Nathan is a very likeable character and his sarcastic personality fits in well with his group of friends. I really like the supernatural world Steve has created and you can tell there was a lot of pre-thought and planning going on before writing this story.

The thing that I remembered the most about the book was Steve's writing. I found it very cinematic and had no problem visualizing in my mind what things looked like through the eyes of Nathan and the supporting characters. I often found myself lost in the witty dialogue between Nathan and his friends and was often caught in suspense with the action scenes.

I get bored easily with books and I was surprised that it kept my attention. The only draw back that I had was by the time I hit chapter 21, I wanted more! The plot was resolved but I guess I wanted the action to continue. I felt the same thing after reading book #4 in the Harry Potter series. The "dark and powerful forces" as quoted from the book was cleverly presented as well as the other creatures created, and I guess I wasn't done with the ride by the time the story ended. However, it is clear by the end there will be a second book.

I plan to pick up a paperback just so I can have a copy with the cover. I read the book when it was just a manuscript and totally love it!

I think I read a different book than everyone else who has commented because I couldn't even finish this one and I NEVER put a book down, no matter how bad it is, but I just could not bring myself to read one more page.

This book is in serious need of an editor. I'm usually quite patient with editing issues - I easily overlook misspelled words or other punctuation misuse. But after he used "edition" instead of "addition" and because his use of quotes had the main character continually talking out loud to himself, I just couldn't overlook it anymore.

I had zero interest in the characters as well. Nathan is whiny and wishy washy, which are not good characteristics for the main character and I couldn't even bring myself to buy into the other characters enough to pay them much attention.

The set up for the story took an inordinately long time given the fact that we don't really learn anything about the heart of the story until more than a 1/3 of the way through. I imagine it was the author's aim to use the first 1/3 as time to world build and character build, except that he so misused that time and page space that even when the story started to pick up speed, I already didn't care.

I was so excited to read this book and I am SO disappointed.

The first chapter drew me in and I was hooked. I was so concerned about Leah and what the heck was happening to her. I wasn't a fan of the protagonist of the story at first (Nathan) because he is so sarcastic and it has been done a lot in YA books. However, as I kept reading Nathan is actually quite funny and says things that I was thinking about certain characters and situations. I love Nathan now and it sounds like he's a hottie along with one of the other supporting characters, Stephen Malick. :)

The dynamic between Nathan and his group of friends is great! I love that they were on this small college campus surrounded by this forest preserve and eerie caves behind the cliffs. It was a perfect backdrop for all the paranormal and creepy things happening.

The campfire stories were creepy, the towns Native American legends were great, the spooky Grimm Cemetery, the shadow guards with their swords, the crazy lady in white, the Legend of the Fallen Ones...I loved it all!

The story was so intriguing and action-filled that the last 5 chapters of the book, I finished all 5 in one sitting.

Overall the author is a good storyteller, great at character building, and a cinematic writer. I can't wait for the 2nd book.

This story was great! I usually read YA paranormal-romance, but I really liked this story. Even though some of the female characters in the story liked to shop and do "typical" girl things, and what not, they are not weak and I liked that. Lafonda is my favorite and I like that she wants to get right in there with the boys.

The writing style was good and my favorite parts of the book were when Nathan, Lafonda, Malick, Jonathan, Angela, and Alan would just hangout, talk, and tease each other. If you like YA paranormal stuff, I recommend it.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal). I am not one to put a book down unfinished, but I seriously thought about it. Instead, I whipped through it hoping it would get better. It didn't. I read a lot of YA, but this was more for somebody 12 or 13. The juvenile banter, the necrocritters, seemed more suited to middle grades than college students.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review from Lovers of Paranormal.

What can I say? I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I had to stay up late last night bc I simply had to know what happened. Legend of the Firewalkers captured my attention from page 1. All the characters are very interesting but my favorites are: Nathan- who just discovered he has powers and seeing how he developed those powers and the confidence in himself was great. Malick- who at the beginning made me mad but during book how he tries to help Nathan and has powers of his own and by getting over his macho complex grew up a lot and became a great friend to Nathan. Lafonda- she just cracked me up but I really did like how she cared about Nathan. And Jonathan- I was getting very frustrated by his disappearing but I knew he was a good guy and as soon as I read what he could do, I was hooked.

I don't want to give anything away because this was truly a mesmerizing and suspenseful book and I think readers should find out for themselves by reading it. And I would like to mention that I can't wait for book 2!

“The dark may have its minions Nathan, but the righteous have their heroes.”

When I think about my favorite line or quote from the book, the quote above is always the first to pop into my head. The quote is from Chapter 17: Heroes and is such a pivotal point in Nathan's journey in the first book.

I love the story and I am so grateful to be able to share it with the world. I've always considered myself first and foremost a storyteller and look forward to sharing Nathan’s story as he continues to come to terms with the supernatural world of The Legend of the Firewalker in book #2.

Happy reading everyone and thank you so much for your support and thank you for your reviews on Amazon and on Goodreads. :)

I can't wait to read more from this series! Suspense, twists and turns meets a young man cast into another "world". Nathan's ornery character is a perfect contrast to the dark and formal workings around him. The different characters are so well defined that a book to movie transition would not be difficult. It's a book and series with a wide world to fall into and relate. Moments of intimacy of heart and friendship balanced with skirmishes of adventure.

The The Legend of the Firewalker is a paranormal book written ad self-published by Steve Bevil. The plot is centered around a group of teenagers some of whom will discover and use special powers to fight dark and powerful forces. Given the plethora of YA paranormal books being published in the last few years, I did not find this outline particularly original.

The thing that I did not like was the writing style. There is a huge amount of dialogues which break to pieces the plot and the overall feeling is that you are reading a movie script instead of a book. Also, the main characters are stereotyped and trapped into dull squabbles. I noticed that some readers enjoy this style, I do not.

Another issue with the book is the lack of any rhythm. The story gets a foothold only in the second half of the book and reading so many dialogues before catching any action was unnerving.

Finally, I agree with other reviewers who pointed out that the book might have been edited better before publishing. While I am not against self-publishing, the advantage of having a good editor to back up a writer could make the difference.

In conclusion, I am so frustrated because I have won a copy of this book with the giweaway promoted by such a nice person as Steve Bevil but the book does not live up to the hype.

Captivating, Intriguing and Suspenseful

I received this book by the Author and the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!

The Legend of the Firewalker by Steve Bevil, is an extremely enthralling story that pulls you in from the very beginning! Leah is ending her freshman year in college, looking forward to a relaxing summer at home after a traumatic year. Nathan is a camp councilor with his best friend, Lafonda, at a summer leadership camp after their freshman year. At camp they meet several new friends to include the wickedly handsome Malick, easy going Jonas, and studious Jonathan. The six week camp reveals things to these friends they never thought possible.

"The dark may have its minions Nathan, but the righteous have their heroes."

"He told us he couldn't open the window for strangers, so he opened the front door instead."

"Because your laugh is how I always imagined it would be."

I extremely enjoyed this book. The way the author weaves together the Cahokia Indian folklore with the Bible and other known legends is fascinating. The characters are perfectly developed and likable. Nathan is a very compelling main character. I LOVED the ending! It is very satisfying and hooks you in to want more! Looking forward to the next book in the series!

It took me so long to finish this book that, until I turned the last page, I wasn't even sure I'd finish it in the first place.

The story is okay, nothing fancy and nothing too weird either. Some of the characters (there is just too many pointless characters in this, what the hell) were nice to read. I enjoyed Malick, Johnathan, Lafonda, even Nathan sometimes; but like.. what's the point of Alan or Steve? Or Jonas? Or even Leah which technically should be the driving force of the book but disappears for 99% of the time after the first chapter?

The problem I had with The Legend of the Firewalker really is only this one: 80% of the book is completely pointless. Let me repeat that: completely pointless. All of those conversations about camp and the campus and the banquet and the fires and their grandparents and their clothes and Leah being okay again? Yeah, nevermind, you don't actually need any of those. The explanation of what you need and want to know (aka: plot) is only given to you about three chapters to the end. And then, they don't actually do anything with it either.

I won't read the second one, probably, but nice try.

I could not finish it. I don't know what book these other people are reading that gave it five-stars because it was not this one. The writing seemed very amateurish, at best. The dialogue was one step up from "Hey, man, what's happening?" "Nothing much. What are you up to?" Dialogue is meant to move the story forward and provide the reader with back story and useful filler information--sometimes even foreshadowing. I could have gotten as much joy out of reading an encyclopedia instead of the dialogue.

Also, the characters were flat. And Lafonda and LaDonda were confusing. They were so much alike that the names blurred together with the similarity, and I found myself going back repeatedly to figure out if I was reading about the granddaughter or the grandmother.

As I said, I couldn't finish it. More power to you if you are able to.

I found this book to read very slowly and is taking all my effort to pick it back up. I can't even bring myself to finish it which is unfortunate because the ideas behind the story itself could have made for a very interesting read and am curious how the events will play out, however the writting itself and the main character are lacking. I found the main character to be quite a downer and whiney with the constant dialogue between himself. That in itself made the book very confusing at most parts as they are written with quotes making me unsure if he was actually talking to the other characters or if they could hear him or not? I've been pushing myself to finish this read but lest I cannot and it shall remain unfinished which is unfortunate as I believe the storyline had potential.

I was very disappointed with this book. It started out ok, but once it got to Nathan it went down hill. He talked to himself way too much and was annoying. I had to re-read parts because they didn't make sense. The writing style was very elementary. The author explained things that didn't need to be explained. I also found it annoying how many times he wrote the colleges name as if we would forget what college he was talking about. And having characters named Lafonda and Ladonda..... really. I understand these are real names so sorry, but it was confusing. I started skipping around hoping it would improve, but eventually gave up. I'm not even sure what chapter I was on.

Firewalls...

I really respect writers and the dedication taken to become published.
This book just took too long to get anywhere. Much of the dialogue was underwhelming, and at times just didn't feel believable. Many adjectives didn't make sense for the scenes. There was enough hair flipping to give the girls whiplash. The flow of the writing never fell into place. I think the first half of this book could easily have been written in one or two chapters. By the time the actual story came to life, it was over.

I will be honest, I was afraid that I wouldn’t like this book. I don’t really like the paranormal genre, I hate movies like ‘Paranormal Activity”. However, I read the synopsis of this book, and I really liked it, so I entered the giveaway. I didn’t win, but luckily after a few times, I won the giveaway of this book and I got the chance of reading this amazing book.

The first chapter was brilliant. It immediately took me into the story and I was almost afraid to read on, because it was so thrilling. I immediately wanted to read more, but unfortunately, I had exams, so I didn’t have a lot of time to read.

After the first chapter, I knew Steve Bevil could write a good story. It was really good writing, not too difficult, but not too easy either. When I read the following chapters, I was a little disappointed, it was an entertaining read, but it stood in the shadow of the first chapter. Now, in my opinion, every book is a little slow-paced in the beginning, and I really liked the characters and the story, so I read on, and I am so happy I did.

The second half of the book is so good. Well-written, thrilling and mysterious. There were a lot of questions. As the main character, Nathan, wondered about what would happen and what everything meant, so did I. I suspected everything that had happened had a connection. Normally, I can figure out what’s happening before it is literally told, but this time, I was taken by surprise.

I won’t tell much, I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s an amazing story. It all fits together perfectly in the end. There are still some questions that are unanswered, but I hope I will find those answers in the second book, once it is released.

I really liked the characters. Not because they are perfect, because they aren’t, but because they seem real. Some people do bad things and we immediately see them as bad people, but that’s not always true. The other way around is also true, people who do good thing, aren’t always good.

The characters also don’t always say the things we want them to say. But that’s life, you only think of the right thing to say after you already said something. Like when you get home you think: ‘I should have said that’. It always comes too late, and that’s what I like about this book, the conversations are real. Of course, we can’t predict how we would react to supernatural events, but we can try, and I think Steve Bevil did a good job, writing realistic conversations.

I also want to compliment the cover. It’s really nice and looks better in real life than on a picture. I’m a fan of the ‘less is more’ principle. I don’t think a cover should be overloaded with pictures and information, and in my opinion, the cover of this book is really good. After reading the book, you know what it refers to and you also know what the title means. I really think it’s a good choice of cover and the title is also well-chosen.

I’m really happy I read this book. There’s something for everyone, there’s mystery, fantasy, magic, adventure and a little bit of history and romance. I would really recommend this book to anyone who likes this genre. Steve Bevil did a great job writing this book, and I’m already looking forward to read the second book in this series.

update:
I also got this book as an audio-book on audible. I listened to it and the second time I read/heard it, it was still a good book and it wasn't annoying to go through it a second time. It was also very well voiced, so props for that as well. This was the first audio-book I ever listened to, and it was a nice experience. I would recommend this to everyone.

Book review originally published here: http://www.iheartreading.net/book-tou...

The Legend of the Firewalker started out strong, showing us Leah, a girl tormented by horrible nightmares that eventually turned real. After a night from hell, she’s taken to a hospital where she’ll hopefully get the help she needs. Leah is a kind, friendly girl, and she’s easy to relate to. But then the point of view switches to Nathan, a sarcastic, blunt, somewhat dull teenager who was rather disappointing after reading about Leah. I couldn’t relate to Nathan at all.

After a while, I got used to Nathan, but I never really liked him. I liked his friend, Lafonda, way better, and his new-found friend, Stephen Malick, as well. They were much more enjoyable characters, even though Malick acted like a total jerk when they first met. If someone tries to drive me off the road, I wouldn’t make friends with them, no matter what.

However, despite the protagonist not being my taste at all, I did enjoy the book. The plot was great, and it was original enough to keep me intrigued. I wanted to find out what was going on with all the characters. I wish Leah would’ve made another appearance sooner though, as I really liked her personality.

The writing was okay. It dragged a little between Leah’s horrible night, and then Nathan and Lafonda arriving at camp. Once they were at camp though, the pacing picked up. Some of the dialogue between the teenagers was hilarious, other things didn’t sound like something a teenager would say.

Either way, I’m sure fans of fantasy and the paranormal will definitely enjoy this book. I thought it was intriguing and a decent read. The book has like 22 5-star reviews on Goodreads right now, so it must be doing something right. For me, it’s only a four-star, but that’s mostly due to Nathan.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on Goodreads.com and the Author.

I enjoyed this book. There was a lot going on with the plot: Leahs nightmares, the Locket, the Blue Light, the Caves, Nathans abilities, Malick, the mystery blue eyed dog. Even with all that was going on the book was easy to follow. I wasn't sure how all of these things were going to tie in but the author did a great job with this. I still have some unanswered questions which I am sure will be answered in the next book. I would highly recommend this book.

I like this book and do recommend it

It started off grabbing your attention in the beginning with Leah and her nightmare dreams. I did find it a little slower when it focused more ion Nathan and it left you wondering what happened to Leah. but about half way through the book the story picked up and grabs your attention all the way to the end. It definitely left me wanting to read the second book to see what happens to these characters next.

This book was hard to get through. In all fairness I think it's giving you a lot of information to set you up for the follow ups. I think the story progresses too slowly. However, I do like the subject matter and I think the next book could be much better if the story moves along faster.
