Keith Floyd (28 December 1943 – 14 September 2009) was a British celebrity chef, television personality and restaurateur, who hosted cooking shows for the BBC and published many books combining cookery and travel. On television, his eccentric style of presentation endeared him to millions of viewers worldwide.
Keith Floyd was a restaurateur and TV chef who produced many cooking shows, including Floyd on Fish and Floyd on France, for the BBC and Channel 5 and published many books combining cookery and his travels. Famous for his distinctive bow tie, he talked, drank and cooked whilst imparting his knowledge of classical French cooking to the nation in an unpatronising way.
All of Floyd's books are a treat to read. Much as his TV series were a treat to watch. He set the style for filming cookery programmes by telling the cameraman to film the item being cooked, then telling him to return to a face on view. OK, it started out as his common sense reaction, and then continued as a general trademark, but it did the job. You could do yourself a favour by buying all his books, they are not the best of the various culinary cookbooks of the various countries that are the subjects. However, you will be able to cook the dishes he describes, where more authentic books will fail you due to lack of ingredients. I'm not suggesting he states that a stock cube will do as well as a proper stock, but he avoids giving a recipe that you don't have a hope in hell of achieving unless you live in that country.
Floyd was an unappreciated writer, these books give a great insight into the television series but also into the way this totally manic man thought and worked. I think there is something super romantic about the way he narrates his adventures with the crew and in the different countries they visit. I loved it.
Part travel guide part recipie book. This book is wonderful as both. It reads exactly as Keith Floyd appears on tv. Funny, interesting and respectful of other cultures. The recipies themselves are fantastic. Fun to make and a joy to eat.
