Thulu & La Fi have inherited an old, furnished Victorian. What they weren’t expecting was that the furnishings included a ghost.
Usually the Thulukans are happy to take on supernatural clients for their detective agency. But there’s something about Darla Redding that bothers La Fi - and with good reason. They discover that Darla has a much darker past than hinted at by her “normal” life. She’s definitely not a ghost they want haunting them. So, if they want to be rid of their unwelcome house ghost, Thulu and La Fi need to solve her murder.
“Unwanted Ghost” is the second prequel novelette to Relics in “The Thulukans Chronicles.”
After a successful career being other people, and later teaching others the many tricks of that trade, Maer Wilson has decided to be herself for a while. Turns out she's a writer. She's always loved stories, especially fantasy, mystery and sci fi. Maer was born in the Year of the Dragon and has a dragon-themed room in her home, but sadly no dragons in the back yard. When she's not writing, Maer plays online video games, teaches college and reads. She also co-hosts the literary podcast, “MythBehaving” and writes for two gaming fansites. She lives in the high desert of Southern Nevada with her three dogs, a chihuahua and two poodle. Relics is her first novel and released on May 1, 2013. She has since released Book 2, Portals, four prequel novelettes, and a box set of the novelettes and a new short story in the Modern Magics series. Unwanted Ghost by Maer Wilson continues the eventful lives of The Thulukan Detective Agency consisting of La Fi and Thulu. In this incredible episode the dynamic ghost detectives help a troubled spirit come to terms with her murder. Maer deftly and amusingly explains what going bump in the night actually means - and I found her explanation perfectly logical. You'll have to read to find out. Maer also fills 29 pages with more story than a Dickens novel and entertains the reader with perfection served with a dash of humour and sadness. This outing is wonderfully uplifting with a satisfyingly poignant ending. All I ask is that Maer cannot stop this express train of pure delight that will suit all the family. A FIVE STAR must read and highly recommended to all lovers of ghost fantasy.
As with Maer Wilson’s first Thulukan story, “Ghost Memory,” her second, “Unwanted Ghost,” immediately captured my interest. Why not? With an opening such as, “The dead woman bounced off the walls like a demented dervish, shrieking and moaning...” what’s not to be hooked by?
Featuring the same lovable, dead-people-only detective agency couple, Fiona and Erik Thulukan, or, as most people call them, Thulu and La Fi, this novella deals with finding out why their newest dead client was murdered and the person who did it. Retracing a hidden mystery from long ago, along with trying to forget the past for both client and detective, the burning philosophical question becomes: Is one person’s reason for murder more legitimate than another’s? Another highly entertaining book from the talented Ms. Wilson, and frankly, well worth reading!
Thulu and La Fi are at it again. This time, though, the haunting starts out in their own home- the home they just inherited from a client who recently passed away. The new thing, this ghost isn't exactly trustworthy.
Wilson does an amazing job at creating a character that really irritated me. The ghost, Darla, is not someone I think anyone could easily like, and I have to applaud Wilson for managing to get that much emotion out of me with a short story.
This past spring I read and loved Maer Wilson’s debut novel, RELICS, about a supernatural detective agency. While working on her second novel, Ms. Wilson has penned two short stories set in this same world.
UNWANTED GHOST is the second of the novelettes, a prequel of sorts to the main story in RELICS. It’s not really a “prequel” because RELICS starts at the beginning, with La Fi as a small child, before she moves to California and meets her future husband. But this story fills in some of the gaps, and whets the appetite for the second novel which I hope is coming soon!
In UNWANTED GHOST, the main characters Thulu and La Fi have just recently graduated from college and set up their new business – a detective agency that specializes in solving problems for the already deceased. One of their clients has left them an old Victorian house in payment, but when the couple go to inspect their new property, they discover a ghost who refuses to leave.
La Fi decides the only way to be rid of the ghost is to help her figure out who killed her, but it’s hard to work a case when your client isn’t telling you the truth.
I enjoyed reading another story set in this world, although I didn’t feel like it furthered my understanding of the Thulukan’s world too much. The main characters acting much the same as they were in RELICS, although since the remodeling of the Victorian is discussed quite a bit in RELICS, it was interesting to get a little of the pre-remodeling history of the home.
I enjoyed this very short story, and look forward to reading Ms. Wilson’s next full-length novel.
Unwanted Ghost is a well-written short story, a novelette if you will, that includes Relics characters, Thulu and La Fi Thulukan. The Thulukan's meet in college, La Fi can see and hear ghosts, while Thulu can 'find' things and sees ghosts, but cannot hear them. They marry and set up shop as Paranormal Detectives whose only clients are ghosts in need of assistance. They are paid by the things La Fi and Thulu find, like boxes in the walls containing ????? And dead bodies found ?????
One of their payments comes by way of an inheritance. An old Victorian replete with dust, bugs and mysterious beings that go bump in the night. Which is how they meet the ghost who haunts the Victorian and refuses to leave. One of the agreements La Fi and Thulu make is that they will NOT bring their work home from the office. Which means only one thing. They have to find the murderer of this Unwanted Ghost.
Unwanted Ghost is a great read, short and fun, and easy on the eyes. The writing is wonderfully paced and you will soon lose yourself in a sweet little book that is well worth the time and the money. Just don't expect to know (at least right away) what the hidden box contains or how the body down the street got there!
“Unwanted Ghost” by Maer Wilson is the second in her paranormal detective series. Thulu and La Fi are two mediums who are sought for their unusual conversational skills by the living and the death. On this occasion they are joined by an angry ghost who wants to find out who killed her. Attempts by the detectives to get rid of the unwanted ghost and to enjoy their new home in peace fail and so they listen to the ghost’s story and agree to help her. This is another entertaining peace and a welcome break from sensational treatment of paranormal or supernormal powers. In low key the two detectives use their intuition to figure out what has happened, the novelette is mainly character driven and explores the idea of the afterlife as believed by spiritualists. Having a friend who works as a medium the story is very authentic to how many mediums describe their work. The actual case is more complex than in the first instalment and holds great promise for the next books in the series.
Unwanted Ghost was a perfect, quick read for a chilly afternoon. Maer Wilson paints a vivid picture of a ghost named Darla and the events that led up to her death. Much of what happened to her was explained through dialog, and sometimes that can put distance between the reader and the event. In this case, that didn't happen at all. Darla explained everything so well, I felt like I was there while she relived it.
A well-told story combined with two likable, often funny ghost detectives is a 5 star win.
This well-paced novelette concerns Thalu and La Fi, a ghost detective team, who discover they have acquired not only a new property, but also Darla, the resident ghost. Darla has been murdered, and is unable to 'move towards the Light' until the mystery of her death is solved.
I look forward to reading Ms Wilson's longer work in 'The Thalukalan Chronicles', entitled 'Relics' - which I have already purchased.
absolutely loved this book! I found a new author! I have ordered all the rest of her books and cannot wait to read them all. Thank you Maer Wilson, for an interesting and enjoyable read! A very new type of story and I don't want to reveal anything to spoil it for a new reader. Please Please read this book, I guarantee you will enjoy it as much as I did!
A ghost with a secret is annoying and hard to handle at the best of times. When they refuse to move out of your own house that is even worse. A great short story that really helps the characters grow and become more alive. They have inherited a wonderful house and a not so nice lodger. The only way to get rid of her is to help her but she does not want to tell them what actually happened.
