The Memory Tree

Rate this book
Fox has lived a long and happy life in the forest, but now he is tired. He lies down in his favourite clearing, and falls asleep for ever. Before long, Fox's friends begin to gather in the clearing. One by one, they tell stories of the special moments that they shared with Fox. And so, as they share their memories, a tree begins to grow, becoming bigger and stronger with each memory, sheltering and protecting all the animals in the forest, just as Fox did when he was alive.

My wife borrowed this from the library where she works just before Christmas break because our daughter loves her fox toy. When we discovered it was about death, grieving and acceptance it made the perfect read to explain about my grandmother's recent death, and we made a memory tree of our own out of paper, which the whole family contributed to.

An absolutely stunning, compassionate, thoughtful and heartbreakingly beautiful book which helps explain the death of a loved one.

The more we remember our loved ones, the bigger our memory tree grows and in that way they will never leave us.

Highly recommended for explaining death to a toddler, used with my 3 year old.

So sad and sweet. Fox is old and very tired. He goes alone into the forest to lay down and sleep for the last time. All his animal friends are sad, but they will not forget Fox. A sweet book with the lovely illustrations to be expected from Britta Teckentrup, this is a good way to help young children deal with death, without promoting any particular belief.

I loved to way the book opened, addressing the death as the fox being tired and going to sleep forever. The animals sharing their happy memories of their friend is a great way of showing children it's okay to be sad that someone close to them has died, but it's still important to remember the happy times they shared with that person.

Fox lived a wonderful life in the forest. He had so many friends, well more like family. Eventually, he became older and sicker and passed away. This struck his friends hard. They had to learn to cope with his absence, and thankfully they did figure it out. Remembering stories of all the funny times they had with Fox.

This book explores a tough conversation in a natural and beautiful way. It shows the power of friendships and family being by the side of their loved ones. This can be very helpful for children who are going through a death close to them. I believe it is also beneficial to those who are not because it gives them insight into how important it is to be there for someone if they are going through it.

The illustrations display the coldness of death at the beginning of the story. The blue hues, the cold wintery snow. I thought this was very clever of the illustrator because it allows the reader to also visualize the pain of losing someone. As you move through the story, warmer tones and colors are used which creates a warmness or a loving feeling. It is important for children to know that if they are going through this, time will get better; a light is at the end of the tunnel.

taivaan autiudessa."[LeGuin]
