Spencer Moretti knows what she wants career-wise—a spot on one of the big radio networks with her own interview show, and she’s determined to get it. She has a knack for getting musicians to relax and blurt out things that make their agents clutch their heads whenever she interviews bands on the top rated radio station in New Orleans. When she’s thrown—literally—into close proximity to Geoff Lane, she hears him utter a closely guarded secret that can shoot her right up to a network contract. If she can get him to let her interview him about it, that is.
The former lead guitarist for Axis certainly didn’t intend to reveal anything about his top secret project, but the fact that he’s leaking his plans to a successful radio announcer flies right out of his head. Maybe it’s because she’s so young and cute and feisty sitting there across from him. That Cheshire Cat smile on her lips kinda makes him want to tell her anything she wants to hear. Against the advice of his manager, Geoff agrees to let Spencer interview him.
Once they’re alone, though, things go sideways, and Spencer leaves without her interview and with her illusions shattered about a man she’d always admired.
Even though they ended on a bad note, Geoff can’t get Spencer out of his mind, and returns to New Orleans to try to make things right. But someone doesn’t want him anywhere near her, and they’re going to great lengths to scare Geoff off. When it becomes clear Spencer’s being stalked by a madman, can Geoff protect her, or will the killer silence her forever?
Juli Page Morgan was just born in the wrong decade. It wasn’t easy growing up a bohemian flower child in a world full of polyester, but she made it work. And while everyone else followed the prescribed route to success, Juli followed her dream—rock music and the people who created it. Now she incorporates the things she experienced in her romance novels.
Juli provides a fresh, unique, & innovative perspective for readers who are looking for more mature characters who live life to the fullest. Whether it’s the characters in her Illicit Series novels, women and men in their 40s and 50s, vital and happy and still tearing it up under the sheets, or stories of coming of age in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s in her standalone novels, Juli’s books appeal to readers who have lived it all and still have a lot of living (and loving!) to do.
Though the Mississippi Gulf Coast will always be home, Juli and her husband currently live in Arkansas. When she isn’t writing, Juli records voiceovers for television commercials.
Juli writes Romance for the Reader Who Wasn’t Born Yesterday, including The Illicit Novels.
Song Without Words is about New Orleans radio disc jockey Spencer Moretti and British rock star guitarist Geoff Lane. The two meet after a bodyguard mistakenly places Spencer in a limo with Lane because he thinks she is part of his entourage. Geoff is immediately taken by Spencer's fire when she refuses to leave the limo in the middle of nowhere. After accompanying Geoff to a rival radio station's after party, Spencer goes back to Geoff's hotel room with the hopes of getting an exclusive interview from him....
Without giving too much away- because you really must read it for yourself- time later finds Spencer surprised to see Geoff in her studio for his interview. One she never thought he'd actually give after what had happened between them.
Spencer and Geoff give in to their attractions and.....Well, just damn. That man is just hawt. And did I mention that he is British?? And a rock guitar god? The things he can do.... Well, Spencer is one very lucky lady! The two look past personas and see each other and quickly fall for each other.
Tragic events take place that tear the two apart, with Geoff saying things he thinks will protect her in the long run. But, of course, things are never as they seem. Secrets are exposed, people are hurt, and truths are brought to light that I didn't see coming. And I loved that!
Morgan tells a love story mixed with suspense that has a nice balance. Her alpha male is all male but sweet at the same time. And her female lead is strong and determined, but innocent at the same time. I really loved that fact. Sometimes female characters are too helpless or too strong. Spencer is a great blend of the two!
There are so many more things that I could say about this book, but I would spoil it for you!! You must read it to find out all of those delicious and intriguing little things that I couldn't tell you! ;) You won't be disappointed.
I look forward to reading more of Morgan's books and have added them to my ever-growing list! And I will definitely be re-reading this book again... probably several times.
Its 1982 in New Orleans and top jock Spencer Moretti is the DJ at the young age of 22 with big dreams and the ability to fulfill those dreams. Spencer comes across as older and wiser than her years. She is smart and savvy and its easy to see that she will go places as she ages.
Geoff Lane is the former guitarist for the legendary UK band Axix is in New Orleans to attend a party. He is working with a friend with the hopes of reigniting his music career. However, he comes across Spencer and falls for the spitfire.
The chemistry between Geoff and Spencer is blistering hot. The sex scenes were hot and spicy. I loved that the more time they spend together the more they cared for the other. I also loved that Spencer could separate work from her personal life and still interview Geoff for her show. That takes a strong person to be able to do that.
I found this book to be well written. The main and secondary characters were interesting and realistic. I just wish the mystery of who is killing off Geoff and Spencer’s friends took up a bit more of the story than it did. Overall, this was a great story. I will be reading more by this author in the future.
I loved just about everything about Song Without Words. I love stories set in New Orleans, and this one did a great job of showcasing the rock & roll side of the city. The author also did an amazing job of weaving her own experience in radio through the story, capturing the truth of it without coming off like an infomercial for old-school DJs. The rock star hero, Geoff Lane, came off like a real human being, which made me care more about the ending. And the heroine Spencer? I could not love her any more. She was real, she was fun, and she was very much her own person, though never once did the author tell us was a spunky, fun, independent character she was. The author just let Spencer BE all of those things, without being self-conscious about it. Spencer wanted Geoff, but she didn't need him, which made the stakes that much higher. All-in-all, a great read, and one I can highly recommend.
Another fabuloso read from Juli Page Morgan! Like her other books, this was sexy, smart, very well-plotted and a whole lotta fun. I love the hot English Rock star meets fiercely independent American woman theme that Juli does so well. Geoff Lane might be her hottest creation yet. And Spencer - loved her. She's strong without being a cartoon character or a walking advertisement for Ms. magazine (okay, dating myself with that reference here. Ha!)
There's a murder mystery mixed in with the romance and it's handled perfectly. Had me guessing until the end. Oh, and that ending - it had me literally reminding myself to breathe. No kidding!
So great job as always. Juli is the queen of the mature, realistic (but hot. Oh, so hot) rocker romances!
I loved this book. It had so many elements that I love in a good book. First, we have a rock star. Who doesn’t love a rock star especially one as hot as Geoff? Second, this book has a strong female lead character. I appreciate a female lead that knows what she wants and goes for it. Third, we have a hot love story with steaming up the sheets love scenes. Last and very cool, a murder mystery.
Geoff and Spencer are a power couple. Spencer is very career oriented and knows what she wants. Geoff is a bit older than Spencer and is also loves his career. Geoff has been burned by his ex-wife and is reluctant to love again. Spencer is has had a crush on Geoff for a while but never thought she would be in a position to be with him, let alone have feelings so strong. They are connected at once. Throw in a little murder in the mix and you have a delicious story.
This book was very angsty, witty, heartbreaking and lovely all in one!!! I wanted to throw my kindle through the wall and bang Geoff and Spencer’s heads together. This is good writing to invoke such emotion in me. I had an ache in my stomach for this couple that lasted for hours after I finished the book. The murder mystery was great. I can usually guess the murderer right away but this book totally caught me by surprise. When the murder mystery started unfolding I was sitting on the edge of my seat biting my fingernails. Well done Juli. I felt Geoff and Spencer’s emotions of love, heartbreak, protectiveness and pure joy. I felt like a fly on the wall with Juli’s descriptive writing and I learned all about the world of radio in this book. Let me tell you that Juli can write a steamy love scene. (me wiping the sweat off my brow) Wow!
This is my first Juli Page Morgan book and it certainly will not be my last. I intend on reading the other two books in this series, Crimson and Clover and Athena’s Daughter. I was thoroughly impressed with this book. I would definitely recommend it if you love a good love story, intrigue and a rock star.
Quotes:
“You’re already having sex and smoking cigarettes. If you don’t watch out, I’ll completely corrupt you.” Spencer blew out smoke. “Corrupt me. Right now I’m a blank canvas. Paint yourself on me.”
“I want to be the woman you’ve always wanted, Geoff.” “Damn,” he murmured before crushing her lips with his.
“I don’t remember offering you my soul.” Geoff lowered his head until his unblinking eyes filled her vision. His breath was warm against her lips as he whispered, “What if I demand it, Spencer?” She replied without hesitation, “Then I get yours in return.”
Geoff recalled the way she’d told him to make her the woman he’d always wanted. She’d had no idea she already was; all he had to do was show her. And the way she’d told him she’d get his soul in return? Geoff wasn’t completely sure, but he though she already had it.
“You love me?” “With every bit of my black heart, honey. God help us both.”
Once again Juli Page Morgan rocks the world of rock and roll romance with her tale of young, innocent Spencer and music legend Geoff Lane. A rising star during the heyday of FM radio, Spencer Moretti never imagined she'd meet her music idol Geoff Lane, let alone end up in his bed. When both happen, sparks fly and the pages literally melt in the reader's hands from the fire that ignites when Spencer submits, body and soul to the man she had once fantasized about.
Song Without Words is another gem from Morgan, one that I plowed through in less than a day. JPM uses all of her delightful experience in radio to bring to life the inner workings of an FM radio station, the way it used to be before automation and the internet changed it. This alone would have made for a compelling story, but Morgan's characters take over the story, pulling the reader in. As I found with Sister Golden Hair, JPM creates characters that are multi-dimensional, driven not just by love or lust, but by what inspires them, whether it be music or, in Spencer's case, bringing that music to the fans. We're also treated to a cast of intriguing secondary characters which are even more important in this romance with a suspense twist.
I do wish SWW had been a bit longer. While we get to know Spencer thoroughly, I would have loved to know more about Geoff and his music. We get enough to wet our appetites, but there was just enough left unsaid to leave me wanting. (Though I'd welcome any opportunity to get to know more!)
4 1/2 stars for Song Without Words, another great rock and roll romance from Juli Page Morgan.
