Detectives Mitchell Reid and Joseph Valentino of the Chicago Police Department have finally moved from friends to lovers, partners on the job and off. Then an escaped bank robber with a thirst for vengeance shatters their world. The police tactical raid to recapture the convict goes horribly wrong, leaving Mitch severely wounded and Joey with a devastating head injury. They both survive, but Joey’s long-term coma and memory loss will change their lives—and love—forever
Jamie Lynn Miller has been writing male/male fanfiction stories for nearly fifteen years and decided to take the plunge and go pro in 2008. She's a romantic at heart, and her stories reflect the desire we all have to find "the one", persevering through trials and heartache for that happy ending.
Jamie has a degree in Fine Arts and has spent the last thirteen years working as a Graphic Designer. She was born in Chicago and still lives there today, with her husband and their furry, four-footed "children".
Besides writing, Jamie enjoys traveling, softball, reading, science fiction, hanging out with friends, and just being creative.
She is eternally thankful for all of the love and support her husband has given her over the years with her writing and other endeavors.
I previously read Jamie Lynn Miller’s stories in 2010 (and enjoyed them) – and as I recalled, there wasn’t anything new in between until now. So between that and the summary (it has potential of becoming an emotional read!) I was pretty excited to start.
Alas! It didn’t really come up to my expectation.
I was struggling to think on the why’s ... so here was what I could come up with: the misfortune of the length.
I felt like I got recaps (instead of story) of what had been going on with Mitch and Joe. The story opened with Joe already in coma. Then we had slight flashback when they were already together (it said that they were friends first, and Joe wanted to be police officer because of Mitch, and they were just lovers after months being friends). Then after Joe was in coma ... suddenly it was two years later (and there were other stuffs happened within those two years happening behind the scene).
I knew that it might be impossible to stretch those days in hospitals while Mitch waiting for Joe to wake up from coma to pages and pages – because what would it tell? But I was hoping for more of a back-story about the two of them, so I could feel like I was there with Mitch. I guess I missed the connection build-up between myself and the characters. I felt detached throughout. I know I should’ve feel emotional with the two guys, but I ended up feeling blah about them.
Oh, I was also annoyed with the repetitive use of “the younger man/the older man/the other man” terms. It was one writing style I could live without because it was a bit aggravating after awhile. Yes, I knew that Joe was younger which made Mitch older, no need to keep explaining that to me.
So did I like it? Barely … mostly I was just MEH about it. It still had its good moments (like with Joe’s mom – whom I thought would be portrayed as the ‘usual’ female villain, but apparently NOT, THANK GOD!) so I was stretching the rating to 3 stars.

Although Memory's Prisoner falls under the genre of male erotic romance, the story the author tells is one of perseverance. When an unfortunate incident renders both of the main characters helpless and in the hospital (one in a coma), the plot thickens, and this tale takes on an air of suspense. It is interesting to see how the lives (and health) of the characters are changed forever. Without giving away the ending, I will say that I think that this book is one that may earmark a new future for the writer.
Great hurt/comfort story! I got teary-eyed several times during reading it, poor guys went through a lot, especially Mitch, but the ending was so sweet and satisfying it was all worth it. Really liked this book!
I’ve enjoyed Jamie Lynn Miller’s last three books, which had some sort of first responders in them; so I was excited to learn she had a new novel coming out from Dreamspinner Press. Memory’s Prisoner also features one of my all-time favorite tropes: amnesia! Add in two cops, who’ve gone from friends to lovers, a psycho bad guy and some awesome hurt-comfort aspects and this book hit all the right spots for me.
Mitchell Reid and Joseph Valentino have been police partners for a number of years, but in the last couple of weeks crossed over that line to more than friends when tragedy strikes: Joe is injured on the job, falls into a coma and Mitch is left to struggle alone without his friend/lover. Now if Joe stayed in the coma, this wouldn’t be a romance novel, so Joe does eventually wake up, but he has no memories that Mitch and he were lovers. Cue the hurt/comfort and angst up a notch and you get what Jamie Lynn Miller does best: describe two men finding their way back to each other.
What I absolutely adored about this book was the accurate description of the police. Ms. Miller did her research and it shows. Joe and Mitch are perfect examples of dedicated cops and the relationships they have within the department with the secondary characters highlight the camaraderie that cops share. Plus, Joe and Mitch’s friendship is evident throughout the book, so the jump from friends to lovers and back again is seemless. By the end you are rooting for Joe to remember how much he loved Mitch.
The only niggle I had was the bad guy. He featured quite heavily in the beginning of the book, his actions result in Joe’s injuries, but I didn’t think there was enough backstory on him to give him the extra voltage to truly be a “villain.” Other than that, I enjoyed Memory’s Prisoner and recommend it for all the hurt-comfort-amnesia loving junkies like myself!
I really liked this book, although it had already been published in 2018 only now read it. And I'm happy to read it because it is a great book, great and credible MCs , specially Mitch
This is a MAGNIFICENT Book. Friends, Partners on the special agents task force. Mitch and Joey have a long history. Just as life gives them their dreams, reality steps in. This is about taking life on the long road. Holding on to love once you find it. Believing. I absolutely loved these characters and their love story. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!
In a Nutshell: This is a unique and optimistic romance. I loved the emotional way the story is told but think a few scenes missed the glaring opportunities for deeper character insight.
Why I Read this Book: I love books set in my adopted city of Chicago and the synopsis caught my eye. Before you ask—this is NOT book two in a series. This is the only book about these characters that I could find on the author’s website or Goodreads.
What I Liked: This story was told in a unique format which packed an emotional punch for me. The long novella opens with Mitch at Joey’s bedside and then readers are introduced to the men’s relationship in a flashback of the men celebrating Joey’s birthday. The love and tenderness between Mitch and Joey is laid out beautifully as the men revel in their new relationship. From the street fair they attend to the sexual intimacies of their bedroom, readers become invested in Mitch and Joey’s relationship. Then suddenly the characters are ripped apart as both men are injured in the line of duty. Then the present story progresses as Mitch copes with Joey’s coma. I can’t say more about the plot but it’s very captivating as I had to know what happens with these two men and if they’ll ever have a HEA. This way of telling the story forced me to have an emotional investment and I give the novella huge kudos for that.
What I Didn’t Like: My one criticism with this long novella is there seemed to be some missed opportunities to delve deeper into their backstories. For instance, Mitch has anger because he feels that Joey’s coma is stealing Joey from him so his physical therapist tells Mitch to keep Joey alive by sharing stories. Instead of Mitch sharing particulars about Joey that would have given deeper insight to his character, the novella says Mitch shares the stories. Also, even though Joey is the character in the coma I felt like I didn’t know Mitch as well as I wanted to. I didn’t get a sense of his backstory which is a shame because I loved his character and his devotion and love for Joey.
IMO: Don’t let my little character quibbles prevent you from reading this emotional and uplifting story. The way the story and relationship are laid out captured my attention and had me racing to the end. I think MM readers will enjoy it as much as I did. *review copy provided by publisher*
A bittersweet story of hope, loyalty, healing, grief and unconditional love.
This is not a traditional romance story where we watch the slow development of love. When we meet Mitch and Joey they are already in love and just beginning to explore the physical side of a long friendship and partnership. When tragedy strikes and things seem to just get worse Mitch has to make some tough decisions and their relationship becomes a test of endurance and unconditional love.
I felt for these men. I cannot imagine the pain and grief Mitch felt as he struggled to hold on to faith and hope while trying to do what was best for Joey. He never faltered in his commitment. And poor Joey waking up to a different world where so much had happened while he was in a coma. His journey back to a sense of normalcy and good health was daunting.
The story moves back and forth through time, giving us glimpses into the men’s pasts and moving forward in their lives. You have to pay attention to the time changes or you can get a little lost.
I enjoyed this story. It was sweet and sad while still being full of hope and love.
While this one had all the earmarks to be a shoo-in 5 star read for me, written by Jamie Lynn Miller, cops, healing/comfort, friends to lovers, it didn't quite deliver for me. There was too much downtime in the middle of the story and it got too depressing. I enjoyed the lead in to the incident and really enjoyed the HEA, but the rest didn't do a whole lot for me.
While I can't recommend this Jamie Lynn Miller book, I can recommend all of her other ones to you. They are wonderful.
Memory's Prisoner is a beautiful story of two lovers coming back to each other after tragedy. Jamie Lynn Miller pulls at our heart-strings as Mitch are Joey face horrific odds.
First we have to deal with the police raid that goes wrong, followed by Mitch's agony as he realizes his fate and Joey's status. We are taken on an emotional ride, as Joey spends two years in a coma, and then doesn't remember that he and Mitch are lovers. It is heart-breaking, but luckily doesn't leave us wondering for too long. It is a fast story, so a lot is crammed into it. Personally, if there was more detail, I would have been a sobbing mess. Luckily, as Jamie choose to keep this a short story, it is an easier ride for the reader.
I adore Jamie Lynn Miller's writing style and Memory's Prisoner is done perfectly. We smile, we cry, and we feel our hearts mending in the end. I love Mitch and Joey as a couple and am thrilled that they found their way back to each other, making this a feel-good story!
Mitch and Joey have been friends for five years, partners for two and lovers for a month. Life is perfect until one operation goes wrong, and both men are seriously injured in the line of duty. Will they recover? Can their love survive? This is such a beautifully written heartbreaking story of love, loss, and hanging in through it all no matter what. Could I do what Mitch did? I would like to say so but that is one strong love. I read this in one sitting hoping and praying for the best and I will admit I used some tissue. If you like established couples, men in uniform, true love, action, and second chances this is for you.
My first by this author. Was a good read. Joey and Mitch, partners in work and in life. When a horrific incident happens and Joey is in a coma for two years. When he awakes, he can’t remember a whole year. Will love rekindle and win out for these two?? An emotional roller coaster and beautiful HEA. Only thing missing was a proposal under the Christmas tree.
Ins. I didn't expect this - being out like this for such a long time. The deep connection between the two of them is amazing. Staying by his partners side all the time - there Gas to be a very deep love.
I just really loved Mitch and Joey’s love story. I liked the flow and pace of this story. It was so sweet and loving, I just couldn’t help be drawn into their romance. It definitely had some heat. I would definitely recommend this story.
This was one hell of a fantastic, poignant, powerful, intense, grab-you-by-the-feels, amazing, emotionally charged, bittersweet, raw, gritty, gripping, enthralling, and totally awesome story. It pulled me in from the very first page, and I would definitely recommend getting this for yourself.
After years of working together as part of Chicago's S.W.A.T. team, Mitch and Joey finally acknowledge their mutual attraction and make their partnership as perfect at home as it is on the job. Together they are able to fill their down time with much needed love an laughter, but their happiness doesn't last long.
Mitch is able to adapt to his own injuries after a bust goes bad, but Joey's memory loss is heart-breakingly traumatic for him to bear. Unwilling to leave his partner alone, Mitch is determined to stay by Joey's side for as long as it takes. For him, their love is unforgettable and it is enough to just be close to the beautiful man who holds his heart. After years of waiting for Joey's memories to return, Mitch's love is stronger than ever but his hope is almost gone.
MEMORY'S PRISONER is a well written combination of action, suspense, drama and romance. The chemistry between Joey and Mitch is undeniable, but the challenges their relationship faces are enough to break my heart. I read MEMORY'S PRISONER in a single sitting. Jaime's deeply moving characters and detailed story development simply captured my heart.
A fairly quick paced read that takes us from Mitch sitting vigil by Joey's side, back to the events that got them there and then going forward from that vigil also. Because of the back and forwards style and the story itself, we dont get a lot of history of the two guys - it is remembering by one rather than living it by both so I did feel a bit remote from the story in that sense. However, the story premise of injury, coma, memory loss all had me shedding a little tear. I'm not sure how memory comes back ater a coma and I'm sure Joey will have lots of work but a lovely ending. Enough of a push through 3.5* to merit going up for me.
Overall, it was a very sweet story, a story of comfort, healing, dedication, and love. I would recommend this one to readers who aren’t too detailed oriented, and like an uncomplicated read.
3,5 stars. i like the book, but i couldn't connect with characters. Mitch was a nice guy and i respected his decision to stay with Joey no matter what. but i don't know, it was too rushed for me. not enough angst. but it was a great read and i enjoyed it.
Jamie Lee Miller known for her tough writing in her Soldiers in combat Series and her Firefighters battling horrific blazes; has chosen police officers for Memory’s Prisoner.
This change has given us more of ‘the aftermath’ of what happens when a soldier, or firefighter or police officer is terribly injured in the line of duty.
We meet Detectives Mitchell Reid and Joseph Valentino of the Chicago Police Department. After almost 5 years of friendship it took an act of fate for them to move from friends to lovers…..With Joey losing his apartment and needing a temporary place to stay it was natural for Mitch to offer his guest room. Now they are partners on the job and off.
Their new happiness comes to a halt when a escaped criminal targets them setting a horrific trap. Both injured, hospitalized and living on separate hospital floors they suffer the fight of their lives….The story is a sweet read!
