Warning: Graphic sexual content. English writer, Michael Lincoln, embarks on an internet relationship with a younger fan, Elise McHugh, who comes from Singapore. Despite her innate shyness, and his concerns over the age gap, things quickly hot up, becoming raunchy and intense. But there is also a touching, soul mate bond there between them, as they follow each other’s successes and troubles in their real lives. Elise, nineteen years old, is an absolute darling: petite, black-haired, black-eyed, very cheeky, and, despite being the daughter of a wealthy property developer, she is genuine, sweet and principled – a well brought-up girl in strict Singapore. Michael, thirty-seven, is recently divorced, trying to keep up contact with his daughter, while working at selling his crime novels. He instantly adores Elise, but struggles to justify the eighteen years and 9,000 miles between them. He finds her to be great company, using his love of words to fulfil her wish to be brought out of her shell. Soon they are enjoying conversation, cheeky banter, sex stories and eventually, frantic, explicit sexting. At the same time they both explore relationships where they live, while trying to get to a place where they can see about possibly getting together. Will they ever find time to meet up in the real world?
My initiation into the world of smut was not exactly a pleasurable experience. My first book into the foray of Erotica " Sexting" was a big letdown. The transitions between narrators was terrible and Elise's constant talk of baths in all of her emails was irritating beyond belief. Why do you need to mention "going to bath" in every bloody email.
I also found the main character to be repulsive and childish. He was just so slimy that I could not get into the novel. I also found it odd how he had tons of money to throw away as an author, even though he is not the least bit famous and also has a child to support. His writing of books also seems to be a magical talent for him since he seemingly puts zero effort into it.
Overall this book is a pass.

I did not know this book was about GoodReads, my favorite "book" site! I picked it up as I love to read about technology and the social media aspects of life. It excelled in that department! The protagonist is a recently divorced 35 year old author from England who uses GoodReads obsessively. He is always checking for new reviews of his books and is currently writing another one. He also checks his inbox and communicates with fans from around the world. The one that draws most of his attention is Elise, a 19 year old girl from Singapore. They rather quickly move to sex stories and sexting. There are some explicit scenes included, no photos! :)
Recommended for anyone who loves GoodReads and romance type novels. No spoilers here, so you are going to have to read this one yourself!
I received this book as an ARC from Net Galley and was not to sure about it but it turned out very interesting… I felt that things were real.. the writing was good but the version I got had some formatting issues… but the concept of writing a whole book based on texting - very well done… and the characters were very funny and interesting… but I wonder why the writer had such a gap at the end… I wanted to know what happen between Michael and Elise… maybe there are extra chapters dealing with this… if anyone knows, let me know…
Overall, it was good and entertaining.. the erotica level was medium…it had a nice HEA!
This novel certainly is the erotic fiction it claims to be. However, in addition, it is quite amusing.
Elise, the young woman Michael Lincoln has been sexting in Singapore, promises that if he were to visit her, she would jump his bones and “other things, like play Monopoly.” Isolated like this, I suppose the line doesn't buckle your knees, but in context with dozens of other similar lines it helps make G. B. Hope’s book unexpectedly humorous.
Michael Lincoln is a divorced British crime writer living in small town Newton-le-Willows. He has become friends with three women on GoodReads — yes, GoodReads — and gradually friendly texting morphs into sexting. He becomes especially involved with 19 year old Elise McHugh.
Michael is pushing 40 and sexting — maybe — is the result of an early mid-life crisis. Before long Michael’s messages become explicitly graphic, as he plays out his fantasies online with Elise. Ultimately, the internet communications involve visuals of naked bits and bobs.
There’s a jim-dandy subplot — side plot? — to this often ribald story. Michael’s across-the-road neighbours are the Garrand’s, a family of shady scrap dealers. Here too, the antic of the quarreling sisters-in-law, Joanne and Shirley, occasionally provide chuckles, especially when it comes to…well, to physically scraping.
I confess, I read the first volume of "Shades of Grey". The yarn became — dare I say boring? — so I didn't tackle the other volumes. I tell you this, "Sexting", while only a single volume, is much more fun [?] to read than "Shades of Grey".
I read this book knowing that it would be humorous and I wasn't disappointed. G.B. Hope used the sexting platform well, the banter becomes clever and steamy in turn, and the characters, though a bit 2 dimensional at first, are capable of development and growth throughout the story. Knowing the hero is British helped me to accept a few idiosyncrasies and quirks in his character. I found Sexting to be an entertaining afternoon's diversion. *I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
I was very wary about a story partly being told in texting/sexting, but it worked. I loved it. Very raunchy and yet touching in parts (no pun intended).
Now this book was a fun read. I enjoyed the concept of this book and the banter being used just had that smile crack upon your face. Very interesting and Easy to follow and a good quick read.
This one was almost a DNF for me. I gave up multiple times but, even though I didn’t enjoy the book, there was something that always pulled me back. It kind of felt like sleeping with someone you didn’t like. You have no idea why you’re doing it because you know you’ll regret it in the morning but you don’t really care in that moment. That’s what this book was. A book I didn’t even like but one I couldn’t stop reading.
Sexting is a big thing with a lot of couples—and non-couples. And it’s never really been the center topic in a novel before. I was intrigued. My curiosity once again got the best of me and in the end I felt like I needed a shower to wash off all the creepiness of this book. Let me make it clear, I knew that I was getting a book that featured sexual content blah blah blah. I like those kinds of books. I enjoy those kinds of books. This, while it had sexual content in (although it really wasn’t as graphic as most erotica that I’ve read), was not one of those books I enjoy. I feel this had so much potential but it was completely wasted.
While I didn’t like the book I do feel like the emotions and the personalities of the characters are actually very honest and real. The confusion, the anger, the guilt that’s inside these characters and their actions are very believable.
First, let’s talk about Michael. Michael’s a creep—one of those very typical internet “player” creeps. The way he interacts with his female Goodreads friends is very much like most men interact with women on dating sites or chat rooms or whatever where they’re really not looking for anything meaningful just someone who will get them off. The flirting, the inappropriate sexual comments, playing with their emotions, etc. is exactly what this guy did. He pissed me off to no end, like all men who act like him do—which is why I say his character is very real and believable.
There’s a part in the book where he’s having a conversation with Elise about being a virgin and orgasms and later he thinks to himself that he won’t talk to her about orgasms anymore since it seems inappropriate. But two seconds later he’s thinking of asking for a nude pic of her. So orgasm talk is off the table but show me your goods?
And this girl, Elise, is either really naïve or just totally stupid. After a few messages back and forth with some guy who then asks for nude pics of her and she’s totally all for it because he wants it “artsy”?? WTF?! I know there are girls out there like this and seriously I just want to punch them in the face to knock some sense into them. To Elise’s credit she didn’t actually send full nudes—until later that is. And then she only sent one because Michael got pissed at her, deleted and blocked her as a friend and she wanted to get him back. This again, to me, seemed like a very real action for a young girl who thinks she might be in love with someone she’s never met. She missed him, wanted to desperately please him and crossed a line she wasn’t really comfortable with just to get his attention again.
Irene is another one of his email pals, but this one rarely messaged him and then only did to ask for money. Michael of course sees this as an opportunity to expose the girl to get a cheap thrill. I actually found the whole money asking thing believable because I have had people on GR message me asking if I could “donate” to their education, but I had an issue with Michael’s response. At first he was thinking of it as an act of charity and then a split second later it was a “pay for play” kind of thing. I’m not even sure many people would have even replied with a “quote a figure” response to someone who they have messaged with twice, but then this guy seems to fancy himself a player. After getting an erotic pic from her, Michael than tells her she doesn’t have to do it again and their communication basically ends there.
While Elise was his main GR virtual hump buddy, he was also friends with Cindy. Their friendship was actually the most normal and their conversations generally were about their day to day lives—even though communication was sometimes blurred because of Cindy’s poor English.
Another thing that annoyed me was the story had too many characters that didn’t really need to be there. It was like they were thrown in just to lengthen the book, there was no point to them at all. Rimski, all the Garrands and even the Prince of Darkness weren’t really characters that benefited the book in any way. I skimmed over their parts for the majority of the book for that exact reason. If you’re going to have characters in the book at least have them in there for a purpose. Of course people could argue their purpose proved in the end, but really, that could have happened with any random Joe.
The ending was something of a surprise. It takes place two years later and Michael is actually in a real relationship with someone and settled. But it’s like it’s just suddenly thrown at you with no explanation of how it happened or why Michael chose the person he did to be with. I would have liked to have read how that came together, and since Elise was such a major character in this story, what happened to her as well. We do get some hint as to where she ended up and it almost leaves an opening for a squeal to this, but I just felt like there could have been more of an explanation of things.
I’m not entirely sure how to rate this one. Like I said, I didn’t really like it but I did feel like there were parts of it that very honestly described real life…..
Received a copy from Net Gallery for honest review:
I would actually give this book 3.5 stars as is, if there was a conclusion with Elsie (even just a one line) I would probably give it 4 stars.
Where do I begin, oh yeah if you like the movie Valentines Day then you may like the style of writing of this book. It is the perfect book for someone with ADHD, as the story line switches every 30 seconds. Knowing the style you know that each tidbit of story you get there will be a tie in later. However there are stories not concluded in this book. WTH happened with Elsie? And when did Cindy become the main girl? Ok I get why Cindy became the main girl, as she was there from the beginning and was always asking for a visit. It took longer than usual for me to get into this book, however once I wrapped myself into little tidbits of information at time I began to get into each story line.
With all that being said I did enjoy the middle of the book, I was okay with the ending as long as there would have been a OH Elsie I am so sorry and then why they ended. I liked Elsie better with Dylan (mainly because he was there, I am not big on long distance relationships). I must say though I am big on the sexting, it being one of my erotic edges.
This book did do it job with erotic scenes!! Of course with a title like Sexting I expect there to be some good juicy scenes, even if they are fantasies.
Food for thought: I do have to give credit to this book for making me think about football (soccer). As an American when ever the indoor football was mentioned I thought of America Football, it took when Joanne was dribbling the football that I was forced to overcome my assumptions and realize this book is not written by American and football meant soccer. Then I was thinking why America had changed the name of football to soccer? As football for soccer makes so much more sense since you are not allowed to use your hands and is actually the foot that is used. When American football uses both hands and feet. I believe America here is in the wrong :)
I guess it goes to show why take the cow when you get the milk for free. Even though Elsie was conservative about total nudity until Michael's temper took over shows how Cindy won, there was never anything overly sexual with them in messaging but a true connection not one based on fantasies.
Ok I must admit my first go at reading this book I was overly tired and had no patients. I'm glad I came back to this book and finished reading it. Although it was busy and confusing at first it gradually got better. The more I read the more I could see how the mini stories connected with the the main story. I did enjoy this book although it's not like anything I've read before. I'm used to more one on one romance books. This book had a little bit of everything and wasn't focused solely on the romance but that didn't take away from the story it added to it. I wouldn't say this is a favorite of mine and that has to do with my own personal preference in the type of books I like. I did enjoy the authors writing style though. I liked the way the author could write a awkward conversation with a neighbor and make it humorous. Or write a mundane thing like shopping and turn it action packed. The story does end with a pretty big cliffhanger that left me very surprised. Overall it was an enjoyable read.
OLD REVIEW:
I received a free copy of this book from net galley in exchange for an honest review. The description of this book had me excited to read it. The prolog also caught my attention I really wanted to know more just after page one. But the more I read the more confused I got there was so much going on and they didn't seem very connected. I didn't make it past chapter four before I gave up interest and I didn't make it past chapter six before I quit reading. I was really aware that this book was a book, I couldn't lose myself in it and not only because it seemed to have multiple seemingly unimportant stories attached but because their was a lot of focus on the fact that the main character was a writer and a book about books isn't very exciting or attention keeping. maybe I gave up to soon because the author actually had a great writing style, maybe I should take a nap and revisit the story I don't know I'm at odds with the description I read about the book, the the first 6 chapters I read and the authors writing style.
I am not quite sure what to say about this book. When I started out reading it (the prologue) I was annoyed with the “chat/e-mail” messages was portrayed, especially for Cindy. But her bad writing was later explained by the Narrator (Michael). That aside I think the prolog was interesting and it urged me to continue reading. The time gap at the end of the story was rather confusing, and I wish the reason for who he ended up with had been elaborated, as I feel like a small part of the story is missing.
Though as I continued reading the book it kind of lost it’s impression and I did not sympathize for the characters. I am aware that this is an erotic novel and not a romance, but there have to be something to sympathize with or something to connect the reader to the narrator. Michael simply didn’t do it for me, it might be the feeling of a “early onset midlife crisis” that I felt was apparent in his character. The only character I found entertaining was Elise, solely based on her quirkiness. It was interesting how the minor stories in the book connecter with the major story , especially because of the genre. And it was also interesting to have a the whole sexting set on GoodReads, a place for book nerds, instead of at a traditional dating website.
I received this book via netgalley and the author for an honest review Michael is a recently divorced man pushing 40 with a daughter named hope age 9. This book is about GoodReads!!!! Stop the presses! Micahel went on to his favorite book website at the moment…goodreads to check the entrants for his latest giveaway because he is an author. The books reads like a day to day tasking and shows Michaels interactions with Cindy.. Who is terrible at English but stars the sex stories between michael and elise. The story line changes around so quickly I get lost however the juicy scenes are good but you can tell Elise’s age from her responses. It makes Michael look really creepy which throws me off and makes me uncomfortable. He said she was too young for the word orgasm but then immediately asks for some nudes..albeit artful nudes. He is a 40 year old player with mainly Cindy and Elise. The book ends really unexpectedly and I am realllly confused what happened to the Sexting aspect because what happened to Elise!!?? The characters were too hard to get involved with it felt very unemotional I only finished it because I received a free copy from netgalley.
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I feel so bad when I read a book and don’t like it. I know someone worked on it and want it to be successful. But I also hope to be entertained and sadly, Sext did not do it for me. The characters were way too bland and one dimensional. As for the erotic part of the erotica, it was incredibly softcore stuff. I look for more description, dirty talk, and more hard core stuff. The very basic plot follows a Brit writer who chats with fans via GoodReads, when he starts talking with two different women from Singapore. Eventually he starts more “dirty talk” (sexting) with one, that eventually leads to a possible deeper relationship. I just could not get into the storyline at all though. I shall remain optimistic that the author will have better stuff coming in future publications.
The title of this book holds too much promise that just isn't delivered. It seems like it'll be light, fun, naughty and have a good pace to it; all of which it failed to deliver unfortunately.
The writing at points (between emails or texts) was still one dimensional as if it was an electronic message with no emotion or depth. Which can also be said of the characters.
Books like this can be great if something actually happens in the story line near the beginning but after 20% we were still no further along.
It was all too much like a normal average life that is lived everyday without enough adventure, comedy or lightness to charm or excite the reader.
I really really wanted to like this and would love to read a reversion with it not playing out in timeline order and having a good editor trim it down as there's a decent book in there but not yet.
I just couldn't do it. It didn't grab my attention after 20%.
The one thing it did make me realize was the power of goodreads and how I know that if I published something, I'd be checking every review written to. But I think thats why the book didn't grab me. It was like, checked the goodreads app, got a notfication, new friend request, etc... Felt like I was just reading what I do normally, ya know?
Eventhough I thought the idea was nice, especially including goodreads, I didn't connect to the characters at all. The first 100 pages were very hard for me to get through. The book has its ups and downs.
It was an interesting read. I like the main characters chatting between the other people in the book. I was confused about the ending though with such a big time gap and not knowing what happened in between and why he ended up with who he ended up with.

I'm sorry to say that I couldn't finish this book. I seldom do that, but when I first started reading this, it took several tries on my end to get into the story. Which was confusing because there are about 8 people's POV's being told. But the Author doesn't point that out, you have to figure it out when you are abruptly stopped and switched to a new character.
I just had to stop where I was and leave the confusion.
**Was given an ARC by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**
To be really honest I have to say I did not like this book whatsoever. It actually turned my stomach a bit. I was confused from the start with poor introductions to characters and I found the book to have no flow, pace, and it to drag. There were a few things that confused me too, one being that his daughter goes from calling him dad to mister with no reason why for the reader to understand. Another being one if his GoodReads friends name is Irene Cathy yet her name changes to Irene Hannah, yet again with no reason to why. In the end I decided to put down the book and not finish it as I was feeling rather iffy reading it. Especially about the sex stories about rape, and him masturbating. Don't get me wrong here I'm no prude and I have read harsh erotica that has had my eyes wide, but this just reads sleazy and I'm just not very comfortable with it.
This was a hard read for me. Sexting is not actual language in my opinion but the thought was good considering fifty shades did so well. The book also spans several cultures and ties them all in ....in the end. I had a friend who reminds me of the Michael in this book, lol....his name was Michael too. The usage of goodreads though was a simple thought and it kind of irked me. It made me think people were using goodreads as some sort of adult hook up sight. Not real good PR for goodreads. I really thought though this book would be about Michael and Elise but he strung along so many women. I just found it aggravating. Thanks netgalley for a read in exchange for my opinion.
This isn't erotic at least not compared to other books that fall into this category. The characters were way too bland and one dimensional. I'll admit, I had hope the premise was great.... the delivery not so much. I found it really really hard to finish, You see I have a slight case pf add and I HAVE TO FINISH once i start something... No matter how good (in this case bad)whatever it is I am doing is. So, I found myself skimming through trying to find an interesting part.
It just wasn't my cup of tea, I'll try reading a different book by G.B. Hope and maybe my opinion will change. No one is perfect
There is good writing but this is not what I was wanting. Michale connecting with women on GoodReads. Elisa connecting with a man I felt could have very well been her dad. I was more turned off and a bit put out by it all. By the end, I felt a bit bereft.
As I said the writing was there but the connection for me is not.
This was an interesting story. I however was a bit confused with the back and forth of the character stories. With that said I think it was worth the read.
