17-year-old Lila has two secrets she's prepared to take to the grave. The first is that she can move things just by looking at them. The second is that she's been in love with her brother's best friend, Alex, since forever. After a mugging exposes her unique ability, Lila decides to run to the only people she can trust - her brother and Alex. They live in Southern California where they work for a secret organisation called The Unit, and Lila discovers that the two of them are hunting down the men who murdered her mother five years before. And that they've found them. In a world where nothing and no one is quite as they seem, Lila quickly realises that she is not alone - there are others out there just like her - people with special powers - and her mother's killer is one of them… This ebook exclusive contains both Hunting Lila and Losing Lila books as well as an additional steamy scene between Lila and Alex. WARNING: Contains adult content.
Having spent most of her life in London, Sarah quit her job in the non profit sector in 2009 and took off on a round the world trip with her husband and princess-obsessed daughter on a mission to find a new place to call home. After several months in India, Singapore, Australia and the US, they settled in Bali where they lived for five years.
She finished her first novel, Hunting Lila (winner of the Kingston Book Award), just before they left the UK, wrote the sequel on the beach in India and had signed a two book deal with Simon & Schuster by the time they had reached Bali.
A third book, Fated, about a teenage demon slayer, was published in January 2012.
The Sound, a thriller romance set in Nantucket, was published in August 2013 and this was followed by the critically acclaimed Out of Control in May 2014.
Her first non-fiction book - CAN WE LIVE HERE? - based on her blog of the same name, was published in August 2015 by Blink.
She also writes New Adult romance for Pan Macmillan (UK) / Simon & Schuster (US) under the pen name Mila Gray.
The Lila Collection is a great read for anyone who has not yet read the Lila series (and if you haven't, you need to) and for those who already have, as it combines both Lila stories plus a smoking hot extra chapter.
It's hard to say what's in the extra chapter without giving anything away, but it's fair to say there's a lot of Alex - and that is a great great thing.
For those new to the Lila series, Hunting and Losing Lila are both exciting adventures, filled with romance, action and heart-stopping twists and turns. At the core of the series is a strong protagonist in Lila, a teenage girl dealing not only with growing up but also her paranormal talents and how she fits into the world with them. Lila is surrounded by some intense and intriguing characters, not least her protective older brother Jack, and his ridiculously swoon-worthy best friend Alex.
I think the Lila Collection is ideal for catching up again with the series, and a bit of something extra special added into the mix! If you love this, and love the characters I'd also recommend Lila Shortcuts - some more short stories around some of the brilliant characters from the series Lila Shortcuts.
The Lila series is absolutely one of my favourite YA series, I could re-read this time and time again!
I feel like I’m reading Sarah Alderson in reverse. I started off with the NA book Come Back to Me , which was her latest book at the time, kick starting my love affair. I just finished two books of the Lila series, her debut into YA. This is a two-book combo with an extra chapter, and sneak preview into another YA book, Fated. Alderson offers some of the best deals on Amazon for YA, I think. If you have never read her stuff before and NA isn’t your thang (although I can’t imagine why you poor soul), I think this is the best intro and a bargain with 2 books for 5 quid!
Alderson’s writing always makes me feel comfortable. I feel snug and happy, is all I can explain it. She does a good job of getting you straight down into her world. Its snappy, funny and straight to the point. After the first 2-3 chapters your in: Lila’s mum was recently killed, she’s living awkwardly with her dad in London, while her brother stayed in America with his best friend Alex (who she has been in love with all her life), oh and she has special powers. She decides to throw caution to the wind and go visit her brother, who she hasn’t seen in 3 years and discovers this whole new life he’s been leading with Alex, and everything seems to lead back to her mum’s death. Strange people are hanging around, her feelings for Alex intensify, she’s trying to process the fact that she has telekinesis and the company her brother and Alex work for may or may not be dodgy.
It’s fast paced, mysterious and will keep you going. It’s got the X-men and Hereos (anybody remember that?) vibe. There’s a lot of interesting characters and some swoony romance (hence the x-tra chapter for us pervs). I do think there’s a fair amount of repetition- I get it Lila, you love Alex. And I think the romance might be too easy, I always prefer a little struggle in the relationship. But you know this is more suited for a teen audience. I’d say 11-16 is perfect (minus the x-tra chapter, although its not really that graphic- unless you read it and think it is and be wondering what the hell I’ve been reading… ).
3 1/2 stars, good but not as good as the authors later work.
I loved getting to know Lila’s character and watch her learn to deal with her abilities as she tries to figure out what is really going on – with her powers, others like her, and the secret organisation Jack and Alex work for. I liked the story and the idea of special abilities developing through genetic mutation. The storyline was a bit predictable in places (ie. people wit superpowers, big bad guy taking over the world, hero in love with supporting character…) but it was still well-written and a good read. I loved the sweet romance between Alex and Lila. It was a bit annoying at the start of the book where her every other thought seemed to revolve around the massive crush she had on Alex; however, once the story got underway and there were some shootouts with the bad guys, things got a lot more interesting.
Overall this was a great and entertaining young adult read. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a well-written paranormal/sci-fi type romance that is easy to read, has a good balance of action/adventure versus thoughtful/drama/romantic scenes, and has well developed characters.
"Hunting Lila" war toll, "Losing Lila" deutlich schlechter und das extra Kapitel unnötig... und nicht wirklich X.Rated oder super steamy. Alles noch im normalen YA Rahmen, etwas ausgedehnter, aber es werden keine unanständigen Wörter genutzt und wirklich viel passiert auch nicht. ;)
