Parish and Richards travel to Quantica, Virginia to give a presentation at an FBI conference on serial killers in different cultures, but they stumble over an American serial Killer called "The Painter". Chief Kowalski and his wife Jerry are accused of Satanic Ritual Abuse of their children, who are removed by Social Services - Kowalski has another heart attack and ends up in hospital, which leaves Jerry in a fight to get her children back. Much to Xena's disgust, she and Stick are given two cases to investigate due to Parish & Richards' absence. One, in which a group called Mothers Against Paedophiles (MAPs) are abducting paedophiles from their homes, torturing confessions out of them and then publishing their confessions and subsequent murders publicly on a website.
Tim Ellis was born in the bowels of Hammersmith Hospital, London, on a dark and stormy night, and now lives in Cheshire with his wife and one ShihTzu. In-between, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps at eighteen and completed twenty-two years service, leaving in 1993 having achieved the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1 (Regimental Sergeant Major). Since then, he settled in Essex, and worked in secondary education as a senior financial manager, in higher education as an associate lecturer/tutor at Lincoln and Anglia Ruskin Universities, and as a consultant for the National College of School Leadership. His final job, before retiring to write fiction full time in 2009, was as Head and teacher of Behavioural Sciences (Psychology/Sociology) in a secondary school. He has a PhD and an MBA in Educational Management, and an MA in Education.
One of the pleasures of these Tim Ellis books is that you get a lot of criminal cases to drool over for the price of one book. You have Detective Inspector Parish and his partner Detective Constable Richards working on a serial killer case in Virginia - they were invited over to speak to an FBI gathering in Quantico. And, of course, both Richards and Parish work the case instead of just making a presentation. Also you have Detective Sergeant Blake and her partner Detective Constable Gilbert. Blake and Gilbert are on two cases - "solve both and you can get your promotion", Blake is told. Blake is the original potty-mouth copper and she uses her full litany of colorful phrases through out the book - and she says them to almost every character she sees. She's most brutal on her partner, Gilbert, but he seems to take everything in stride. If these three cases aren't enough there is a four case. A senior police official is accused of Satanism and is raked over the coals. Blake and Gilbert also help with that case. These are fun books - plenty of cases to work with a light touch on the writing style.
The Parish and Richards books by Tim Ellis are fun to read -- if fun is the right word. There are always so many serial killers! In this one and the last one, new characters have been added. I'm not quite sure how I feel about them. One of them is a snarky, foul-mouthed female DS and the other is her secretive, former-intelligence agent, male DC. They make a good team but I don't know how long I can take her. This book, also, involved Parish & Richards in the US meeting with the FBI and solving a crime the BAU couldn't. Okay. It is a book and not real life. At least in this one something good happens re the Chief and the Chief Constable. But cloning????
Good story, but the crudeness and crassness need to be toned down quite a bit. They don't add to the character development at all. And like a couple of previous books, there is at least one glaring error. This one concerns the father of Erin Donnelly, who set out to destroy Kowalski. See updates for further opinions of mine about this book. Ellis does write nicely, but I wish he'd get his mind out of the gutter. He's like a teenager.
yet another great read from Tim Ellis and his Parish & Richards series. A real page Turner. Loved the introduction of the new characters. Simply loved it from start to finish. Read from cover to cover in 2 sittings which is good going seeing as its half term!!!!! Let's hope that QUIGG 5 is released shortly and is as good.
Another great story. I have just downloaded the next 2 in the series. Definitely need to read the books in order, to understand the characters, as they follow on from each other. Highly recommended police series.
