I was terribly unprepared for cooking when I married. I got along all right with watching Julia Child on Public TV but still there were so many things I didn't know. One day I found this book (original paperback edition) in the remainders bin of a store and got it. She was my life saver.

To this day (and I'm married 47 years to my first husband as I type this) I still occasionally refer to Jo's book for inspiration or to answer a simple question. I don't follow her recipes verbatim as way back then who knew/cared about sodium and fat, but the basic as still good.

I’ve used this book for at least 30 years. It gives me the basics to make delicious dinners. I’m not much of a cook and it has really helped!

I hate to cook and this book saved me until I moved to Manhattan and lived on take-out.
