What really makes a man plunge headlong into obsession? And what does he do past the point of no return? New York Times bestselling author Mary B. Morrison delivers a seductive, mesmerizing tale of "love" gone dangerously wrong. . .Madison is my woman. She needs me. This is the mantra Granville Washington constantly repeats to others, including the friends and family who beg him to respect Madison Tyler's demand that he leave her alone. Sure, Granville knows they're as different as can be. He's a construction worker, ball-and-chained to the Houston grid, while brilliant, beautiful Madison runs her own multi-million dollar company. But he also knows she can't resist the way he kisses every inch of her just right. After only three months, Granville is sure she's everything he desires in a wife. If Madison only knew the real him, she'd realize they belong together. And he'll do anything to make her his. Forever.
What part of "I'm not in a relationship with you," didn't Granville understand? No matter how direct Madison is, Granville just doesn't get it. He was fine when it came to putting in overtime burning up the sheets, but that's where their connection ends--or so she thinks. Once the stalking begins, Madison files a police report. She's determined to take her life back. But once she moves on for real, Granville has a surprise for her. . .when she least expects it. Madison is about to discover just how far he will go to have and to hold her. Whether she wants him or not.

I'm a true Mary B. Morrison fan. Die Hard, but she lost me on this one. There were times when I really was into the whole story, but more often than not I had to force myself to finish the book. One problem, I listened to the novel on Audible and the female narrator's voice was irritating. So, I'll have to say this novel was just OK. The characters were just plain silly to me. But, as usual Mary B. did a great job with character development. They were all believable, but silly. Unfortunately, there are people who act like this. I honestly believe I was supposed to hate Granville, but I LOVED HIM!!! He was hilarious and made the novel.
I was not a fan of the whole theme of two grown woman making a bet over a man. That was a little out there, but hey overall the novel was okay.
I don't know were to begin with this book. The female characters were all disingenuous except for Tisha. She just married the wrong man. Granville was the most real person of them all. Loretta and Madison were pathetic, selfish, sneaky, too faced and disgusting in playing with people's lives whom they say they love or cared for. Friends like them...i rather choose to be in the company of my enemies than with women like them. And Loretta her so called spiritual room..please she needs lessons from Iyanla vanzant to tell her how much of a hypocrite she really is. You don't let your unworthy female friend who disrespects you at any chance she gets ruin someone's life intentionally. A godly woman won't want that on her conscious. And if it cost you your friendship with that person --GOOD Deed. The ending sucks. Madison should have been on the ventilator not Chicago. Books like these are frustrating to read. Especially when they try to have an elite class of people thrown into the mix of a story but it still turns out as garbage reading. The writer tried that's why I gave a 2.5 ratings.
I definitely enjoyed this novel. It drove me crazy. You know how girlfriends can be with each other. That damn Madison is a beast but Integrity is not her strong point. Loretta is a great person but lacks confidence in herself when it comes to men. She loves hard and can't easily move on when the relationship ends. Tisha, I don't know what to say about this woman. She divorces her millionaire husband to marry her jobless high school sweetheart. now wait a minute. This man did not pay for her ring or the wedding!! WTH!!!! Enjoyed the characters. This novel was written with each character telling their part. I liked that. However, there was not a section from Tisha. She was more of a side kick among the girlfriends. Nothing really going on with her life but I think the author could of given her a chapter with her thoughts on what was happening among her friends. Readers, Granville ain't no joke!! Chicago is the man you dream about. I love book cover designs, Its usually the first thing that attracts the reader to the book if the tittle doesn't. Book cover design: 3/5. the tag line was a great addition too. Now if you are a reader that choose not to read descriptive sex scenes and profanity, don't purchase this book. (then give it a bad review.) If I Can't Have You sits on my book shelf as a Page Turner Read.
I finished this book a couple of weeks ago and I have to say I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It managed to do something that not too many books do and that's grab me pretty close to the beginning. The characters, the story, everything just intrigued me. I was taken in by how everything was laid out; Granville's crazy actions...the friendship (or some semblance of it) between Loretta, Madison, and Tisha...the friendship of Loretta and Chicago, and the relationship between Loretta and Chaz, etc...all of it had me hooked to the point where I was actually getting annoyed when someone would interrupt my reading and the finding out what was coming next. I wasn't crazy about the ending, but I was glad to see the 'To be continued...' so at least I know that's not all there is to it. I loved Chicago's character, and all throughout the book I was hoping that he would wise up and leave Madison. And I was also hoping that Granville would get his due, so hopefully he will in the next installment. This book also brought several very real issues to light, most notably breast cancer awareness and domestic violence. It's almost scary to realize that there are real men out there like Granville who do these kinds of things to women, and who are so deluded that the most general interactions cause them to think that a woman is his, and thus, he can do whatever he wants to her. It's equally scary to think about going in for a regular checkup and hearing that you have cancer. It made me want to schedule my own appointment, so that upgraded the book from being just entertaining to also informative and even inspiring.
This book is a trip. It's good, dramatical, and messy. This book had me talking out loud to it.
We have three women who have been friends since childhood, Loretta, Madison, and Tisha. Their so close that they live next door to each other, in Houston, TX.
Loretta is size 12, dark-skinned, tall, loves raspberry lip gloss and has a baby by the love of her life Reynard. Reynard is a gynecologist, who left her for another woman; and after six years she's still in love with him. Loretta started seeing a man from Port Arthur, TX named Granville, who's all kinds of crazy.
Madison is a light-skinned, creole, freak-nasty, power hungry, mean, self-centered **tch, who is engaged to Roosevelt aka Chicago. Chicago is a General Manager of a Professional Football Team, and he's a multi-millionaire.
Tisha is a dark-skinned beauty with a spiky Afro, and a hot body to go with it. She's married to lazy-ass Daryl . (I think that's his name) I don't know anything about him except, he doesn't work. Tisha has two kids from her first marriage, and her ex is rich.
This was my first experience with Cary Hite, his narration was something I had to get use to.
I have never read a novel where one of the characters was so fixated on his Johnson. Granville's tool led him to have restraining orders from six different women. I don't feel sorry for Madison. She was light, bright and dang near .... She took a bet to screw the aforementioned character and set everything askew. I loved Loretta but she had a chance to change the script after getting a license to carry and froze. Chicago was innocent and suffered the ultimate price.
This story was quite the ride! The general plot was a bit concerning. I don't think any woman in her right mind would pawn a predator off to their best friend. That's just messed up, but everything about this story was messed up! Despite all of the trifling festivities, I can't lie, I was intrigued. After a certain point, I was hanging on to every page anticipating what could happen next.
I have never read any books by this author and after this one, I don't think I ever will. Unfortunately, I do have a book at home that is by Carl Weber but Mary B. Morrison is the co-author. I was looking forward to reading it because I like Carl Weber but now I'm skeptical. I ordered this book through Black Expressions in mid May and it was on back order. I didnt receive it until the 1st of July. I erroneously assumed that since it was on backorder for about six weeks that so many people must've ordered it because it was a good read. WRONG. I think it was on backorder because it stunk so bad they had very few copies.
Starting off with the plot,it was horrible. You have these three "best friends" from kindergarten, Madison, Loretta and Trisha. The story starts off at Trisha's wedding reception to her deadbeat, unemployed high school sweetheart as Madison puts it. Madison's boyfriend, Roosevelt aka Chicago, proposes to her on the dancefloor. Madison accepts of course (him being a millionaire I'm sure had nothing to do with it). Immediately afterwards, Loretta drags her off the dancefloor to plead with her not to marry Roosevelt because as Loretta put it he is a nice guy and Madison will ruin him. That's when they place this corny and senseless bet that if Madison can tame Loretta's stalker ex-boyfriend, Granville, then she can have anything she wants from Loretta but if she loses, she has to call off her marriage to Roosevelt.Madison accepts because for whatever reason she believes every man wants her and she can have any man she wants.
The remaining 250+ pages after the bet are just tasteless, detailed accounts of one of the characters in the book having sex with somebody for whatever reason. Granville at first stalking Loretta but then turning his obsession to Madison after she seduced him.Loretta obsessing over her daughter's father who dumped her while she was pregnant and married someone else.Roosevelt's family begging him not to marry Madison.Loretta quickly falling for and becoming attached to Roosevelt's younger brother, Chaz who if you ask me she should've cancelled after the first date because he was rude and condescending. And Madison's father begging her to hurry up and marry Roosevelt so she can claim some of the $10 million dollar inheritance his grandfather is going to give him and she can use it to help pay for their failing family business.
The only positive note in the book is the shedding of light on breast cancer awareness. I guess it could inspire some readers, if they bear to make it that far in the book, to get screened for breast cancer.
I hated at the end Roosevelt got shot and was in a coma. All he really deserved was a slap in the head to bring him into reality and see Madison was scandalous because she would open her legs to someone else while engagaed to him for a silly bet. The author should've saved the bullet for Madison, Loretta, Granville, Raynard or Madison's father, Mr. Tyler. Either or all of them would've been well deserving of it.
The worst part is this trashy soap opera has the nerve to be a "To Be Continued"! Nerve of this author to put decent readers through so much pain. Again. I will not waste my time reading it and instead will put my time to better use and watch the Maury Povich Show!

Rating 3.5 stars.....If I Can't Have You by Mary B. Morrison follows Granville Washington, and three long time girlfriends Loretta, Madison and Tisha.... then there was Chicago, Chaz and Raynard.....Granville was not a bad looking man but in his mind he has it going on. He has a great job in construction, a big truck and a big.....but that 's about it but in Granville's mind, any woman would want a catch like him......that is until they date him then all hell breaks lose.......Then along comes Loretta who is single mother with a beautiful six-year-old daughter......Loretta is still wounded from the break-up with her daughter's father, Raynard...although he is married to someone else she still wants him back but finally decides to try and move on.......So when she briefly starts dating Granville, she thinks he may be the distraction she needs. Could Granville possibly be the man to finally take her mind off of Raynard....Then there is Madison a catch to most men. Madison is highly successful, beautiful and has been engaged not once, not twice but a whopping nine times. When Madison becomes engaged to a man worth millions of dollars, Loretta is disgusted. Could it be she is jealous or does she really have Madison's financee's best interest at heart? No sure of the reason for Loretta's reaction to Madison engagement......The story then takes a slightly dangerous turn when Loretta makes Madison a bet that Madison wouldn't be unable to take Granville off her hands and tame him. Madison accepts being one who always have to win but little did either one of them know how bad this bet would turn out to be for both of them. Then there was Tisha and her husband Daryl not sure what either of there roles were in the story......There were a few parts in the book that was making me wonder why were these people even friends......Also, there was no explanation to quite a few things that was happen in the story......I was really DISAPPOINTED with the ending .....To be Continued is NOT the way to end a book.....at least not to me.....
This was a great come back from her last release which left me quite disappointed. From the first page the drama did not stop. At times things seemed to be over the top. This book follows Trisha, Madison, and Loretta who are successful women just looking for a husband. Loretta was involved with a guy for about a month by the name of Granville, who just so happens to turn out to be a stalker. Madison is a spoiled brat who wants nothing more than a rich man to take care of her. While Trisha married the man she really loves who has no goals and is content with being unemployed. The Dubois family is nothing to play with and I can't wait to see what secrets will revealed in the sequel. Loretta seems to have some type of connection with Chicago, it will be very interesting to see how things turn out. Very good read.
I finished this book so quickly! I became involved with the characters immediately! Mary B. Morrison never fails to deliver. This book ended with a "to be continued..." I can't wait to see what happens next with all of the relationships in this book including romantic and father/daughter. In addition, this book sheds light on some very serious issues that woman are commonly faced with.
This is the first novel in the series, which I hope to read a lot of. I have come to learn and I come to like most of the characters. Ms. Morrison has became a wonderful Storyteller, and a superb writer. Her stories are down to earth, many peoples can relate to the conflicts, and topics, and I find that refreshing.
What I also find refreshing is strong feminine women. Please note I said they were strong FEMININE women. A lot of writers can't portray strong women femininely completely, myself included. They usually come across too strong and mannish, or too feminine and soft, or strong, wise, and aged. That's not the case with the women between these page, I hope you get to see what I have.
As usual the formats used for this review were first; the Kindle Edition version, approx. 385 pages, published by Kensington Books, also I listen to the Audible.com version, 9 hours and 13 minutes long, narrated by: Nacole Small and Cary Hite, published by: Blackstone Audio Inc., and Buck 50 Productions, LL.
This novel started with and featured three young women, Madison, Loretta, and Tisha. Have you ever wondered about this magical number 3? --There always seem to be a trio when it comes to storytelling. Even I, myself have used this formula in my writings, and no I didn't learn this in any formal, or informal settings. I used the Trio Theme the way most writers would use the formula, which I like to refer it to Clint Eastwood classic movie, "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly."
I say this because if you look at each character and their roles, there is always the super bitch / bastard, the one who opposes the bitch / bastard, and the one in the middle who keeps the peace and balance between the two. The Trio, usually break-up along the way, and get back together at some junction down the road, and I believe that might be play out with this trio.
Now on with this review. If you like drama well you got the right book, baby. If you like stupid characters, well you got the right book, baby, and if you love hating those back-stabbing mo-fo's, well you got the right freakin' book. The book is Good! This was a page turner for me, and I think it will be the same for you.
There are predicable situations and outcomes but it's how you get there (the journey,) that keeps you glued to the story, and all of the drama within the pages here extend from a stupid-ass bet, a smart-ass dummy accepting that stupid-ass bet, and a dumb-ass who breaths. Yeah, yeah, yeah I know, this book got a lot of asses running through its pages. Hey, what can I tell ya!
I don't like giving the story away, or a long summary with all the details, why should you read if you know everything about it, but I'll say this much, the book deals with the aftermath of a stupid bet Loretta purposed to Madison, as where she accepted, which had me wondering if women do stuff like this often? -Someone please let me know.
Getting back. Madison agreed to the bet and as you would know it the bet alters her future, which she was so sure would come to pass. --If I Can't Have You, is a theme a few of these characters will hum. So like, check it out for yourself. I give this novel 5 Stars.
OH MY GOODNESS... PURELY PHENOMENAL!!!! This book will leave you speechless. The writing was intense, capativing and so beautifully done. Each character, Chicago, Madison, Loretta and Grandville were so deeply created with such rich in-depth vivid background. Their stories were so fascinating, unbelievablly shocking and quite often violent!
My head was literally spinning with excitement and anticipation as this wildly story unfold. This is my first time reading this author book and I thought she is amazingly creative, completely intriguing and exceptional talented. I felt so fascinating connected to each individual's emotions.
I can't wait to read the next book and all other books written by Ms. Morrison...in the immediate future...
I won "If I Can't Have You" by Mary B. Morrison through the Goodreads Giveaway Contest.
Once I started this book, I was glued to the drama and constant action as this book unfolds. This author is a great storyteller, and her characters come alive on the page. Each chapter is devoted to one of the four characters in the book. This allows for the reader to get close and comfortable with all four characters.
Loretta a single divorced mother of a little girl meets Granville Washington to tell him , after just three weeks of dating, that this will be the last time she wants to see him. But Granville is deeply in love with Loretta," his Baby" a sexy brown-eyed bombshell.Loretta is still in love with her ex Raynard.
But Granville and Loretta are from different worlds. Granville is a construction worker in Texas and Loretta is a pharmacist. But Granville won't give up...he is obsessed with Loretta. They belong together. Why can't she just give him a chance, and get to know him better.Their lovemaking is passionate...at least for him.He thinks they are in a relationship but she denies it.Their dispute ends in the cops intervening. The cop tells Loretta that there are three protective orders filed against Granville from three different women.
Madison Tyler is celebrating her engagement to Roosevelt/Chicago. Her girlfriends Loretta and Trish attended the celebration.Madison thought Loretta should have brought Granville as her escort, after all he worked for Madison.Madison already had eight engagement rings collecting dust. This one makes nine.No man could tame Madison, but Roosevelt was about to inherit $10 million from his grandfather.
Then Loretta made Madison a bet that she couldn't tame Granville, and Madison is so competitive, she accepted the challenge.
And then the story really takes off with major consequences.Looking forward to reading the sequel to this novel. A very enjoyable read.
This was probably the best Mary B. Morrison book I've read.It was told from different points of view. Loretta, Granville, Madison, and Chicago. Loretta dated the psycho Granville for a little while. The story begins with her telling him she doesn't want to see him anymore. He begins to stalk her. It turns out she's not the first. Here is where I become confused. Her friend Madison (who is not the nicest person) and her make a bet (at their other friend Trish's wedding) that Madison can tame him? Or something along those lines. How do you tame a crazy? Why would you make a bet with a psycho in mind? Madison is involved with Chicago. He's rich and what her family needs to get their failing business off the ground again. There wasn't a lot of room for character development. I almost feel like there was too much going on in one book. Making the description a little deceiving. Loretta starts dating Chicago's brother. Madison doesn't seem like the type of person you'd be friends with for a long time. Much less since kindergarten like they were. She sleeps with Granville. She gets diagnosed with breast cancer and is pregnant towards the end of the book. Again, one of Mary B. Morrison's better books. The most realistic part for the most part) actually was Granville's. He thought the way a delusional, psycho stalker would think.

Mary B. Morrison is back with a whole new cast of characters. If I Can't Have You is the story of a guy who takes crazy obsession to another level. A bet between Loretta and Madison ends up being the worst idea they have had. After one night with Madison, Granville can't seem to let her go. He is determined to have his woman by his side forever and have her hand in marriage. Loretta is just looking for a man to call her own. She is determined not to be alone forever with her young daughter. While Madison is working on getting away from Granville, she must make sure that she keeps all this hidden from her fiancée Chicago. At what lengths will Granville go to keep Madison with him?
Like most Mary B. Morrison books, I greatly enjoyed this one and the drama that the characters went through. I will say that Loretta's desperation was really starting to get on my nerves as the book went on. I just wanted her to be happy as a single person. I also was quite annoyed with Madison from beginning to end. She reminds you of one of those people that makes sure to surround themselves with people they believe are beneath them. I am disappointed that there will be a sequel. I wish she would have wrapped it up in one book.
As a favor to my sister I told her I would take her library books home with me and drop them off to save her a trip. I was low on reads and picked it up. The story was good, but I can't give this more than 2 stars. The disgusting foul profainity in every paragraph in the book turned my stomach. The gross, nasty, vomit-inducing graphic "sex" scenes further ruined it, and I think there were like 30 of them. Nasty on top of nasty. Foul. Disgust. How many times do you need to say di*k and pu**y? Five thousand? I feel ashamed to even admit I read this. I thought my favorite Monarch fiction novels were shameful, but they are tame compared to this. Give me Edward the III's court or Henry the VII's court any day.
Most of the characters were horrid, some entertaining, but still horrid. Melinda and Granville are funny at times, but both are stinkin' crazy.
There is a part 2 coming, and I feel cheated. I read this book, and will get no answers unless I lower my standards and read part 2, luckily my standards are only slightly above ground level in the first place. When my sister checks it out, I will sneak it home as a favor when she's done.
OK, I need to explain my rating, because on a couple levels it is not fair.
I enjoyed the book. It was well written. I connected to the characters and even thought about them a bunch after completing the book. I like how the book is told through a couple different character's voices. As a white person, I liked reading a book with black characters. It made me realize how few are out there.
BUT, the ending sucked. I love books that are part of a series. But this one left everything still hanging. I think books that are part of a series should still have an ending. It is OK to leave something hanging, but this one just seemed to end at a cliff hanger, like the last TV show of a season. Even this would have been OK, if the next book was available. But it is not.
Do not read this book until the next book is out. And if that is not the end of the series, still wait.
If there had been some wrap up, ending-wise I would have given the book 4 out of 5.
This story is about being careful of what you bet. There are three main characters in the story and they are best friends, Madison, Loretta, and Tisha. Loretta has been dating a crazy, obsessive individual named Granville. Madison has claimed that she can tame any man and Loretta bets her that she couldn’t tame Granville. Granville is smarter than they think and he puts Madison in a very compromising position. Madison gets married and on her wedding night, Granville shoots her husband. This story is about rape, love, kidnapping, lying, and attempted murder.
Author Mary B. Morrison has another winner she used a method of writing that I enjoy. She divides the book into chapters that focus on one character at a time and tells what is going on with that character. She then will focus on another character and follow suit. The book was a fast read and it was very interesting. I am interested in reading more books from this author.
It is always a thrill to read a book by Mary B. Morrison. I know that Granville Washington was a piece of work. It's sad to say that there are people out there just like him, that don't know how to take NO for an answer. If everything works out, then Madison should give up her selfish ways and come clean with Chicago. It's a fine time as any to let him know the real deal AKA the truth. I am happy that Loretta and Chaz was able to make it through, but she's got her hands full with that baby daddy of hers. The parents need to mind their own business, and stay out of it. As for Madison's father, he needs to create a business plan that doesn't involve other peoples money. I look forward to reading the second installment to see how things turns out. I almost forgot how intriguing Mary's work was. Great story!
I believe this book negatively portrays black women. The only good thing about this book was the intricate personalities of the three main leading ladies role: Madison, Loretta, and Tish and their relationship with each other. These ladies have been best friends since grade school. The I am with you, believe in you, and sharing ALL the details of their lives makes for a bond that is stronger than most marriages.
If we can get anything from this story, relationships are necessary for all of us to build a foundation of close friends in order to face and get through all the "shit" life presents us with. Someone who's in your corner can keep your stress from overwhelming you.
The men in this book are hopefully a bad representive of black men. I know men love sex and will go to great lenghts to get it. But really....the men in this book were way over the line.
This only the second book I have read by Mary B. Morrison. I didn't really know what to expect, but I was glad I kept reading. She does a great job with character development and really show who they really are. The story, although highly unlikely, was somewhat believable and made for a very entertaining book. The characters were believable, because unfortunately I know people who act that way. I did not, however, like the ending. After going though all the twists of this story there should have been a good solid conclusion. I don't feel a story should end with To Be Continued. -- Norman LaVelle
Mary B has done it again! The best thing about this book is when it ends and you want more, you know there's another installment coming!
Unfortunately, this story is all too common- A woman so desperate for love and a relationship tries to ignore and then change the man she is with, all to no avail. What's not common is Ms. Morrison's ability to tell a story and draw you in until the last word is read. The range of feelings I had for the characters... The overactive imaginations and inflated egos of some people. It started with a bet and a death may just very well be the way the story ends.
I enjoyed this book but I hated the ending. Reading about a character like Granville was truly entertaining. His psychosis was laughable throughout the entire book. I could not empathize with Madison or Loretta. In my opinion both women were weak and insecure. The opportunity to stop Granville from stalking them presented itself several times but neither woman pursued the issue. I will read part two because I need to know what happened to everyone.
I loved loved loved this book, so much happened I can't narrow it down unless I give away spoilers. So I will just say this... If u pass this book up u have missed the best book of a lifetime, this book will have u talking to yourself, cursing and wanting to jump inside the book and slap a few people..... lol. So don't hesitate one moment longer, u won't be sorry... Well I'm off to the next book in the series. tootles
Wow this book was so good, drama ,drama and more drama,Mary B has been doing this a long time and haven't lost her touch yet, I can't wait for part 2.I will definitely recommend this book because from the beginning to the end it keeps your undivided attention..Team Loretta
Oh my gosh delicious read, Granville is crazy as hell and had me in stitches with his delusions and omg how can Mary B keep us hanging with Madison's decision! Scorcher. Looking forward to the next one. Great job Honey B! X
This was a good quick read. It was a little raunchy for my taste but full of drama. The story was supposed to rotate around three best friends but only two were really discussed in detail. I realize the ending was supposed to lead to a sequel but it was very disappointing.
