I read this book thinking it was the first volume of the regular Attack on Titan series, so while it's a good story, I spent most of it confused, and it didn't have the emotional impact it should've had. Therefore I am going to reread it, knowing what I should've known in the first place, and then I'll read the second volume. That way I can give a more accurate review. While this book and the following volume are perfectly fine to be read before the preceding series, I would recommend waiting until after you've read the original series, or are at the very least, a few books in.

It was nice to read more about Levi's past (I mean he is my favorite character, right after Mikasa), and how he and Arwin met. The art style is also really good, even though I do prefer Isayama's art style a little better.

On to second volume.

Nada me va a convencer jamás de que Levi y Erwin no se empotraban en todas partes. La tensión sexual se SIENTE. Por lo demás, Levi es mi personaje favorito y la única razón por la que he seguido este manga tanto tiempo.

I might have enjoyed this volume more than any of the original AOT manga series, despite a lack of my favorite character, Mikasa. Reading and watching AOT, I never really got Levi, or particularly cared for him. (Probably mostly because I never got far enough into the story to really grow attached to him?) He simply was the character with the dead eyes that my Goddaughter got me to impersonate, with photographic evidence that should be burnt. Regardless, this volume contained actual character development and backstory, which I am all about. There was a minimal of crazy action where no one can tell what's going on, and also far less disturbing Titans running amok, though that one Abnormal running around like a drunk bloodthirsty fashion diva perhaps fulfilled the quota? In any case, I find myself actually looking forward to reading Vol. 2.

As I understood it, Hikaru Suruga should be commended for getting the art to look nearly exactly like the art of the original AOT manga. However, he should also be berated for making it look nearly exactly like the truly awful original art. Any opportunity to change how that art looks should be taken immediately. Although I thought some of it was maybe ever so slightly better? Or maybe I was just getting used to it D:

Oh, and one more thing....

Levi Ackerman

The man. The myth. The legend

This was a fun little prequel/backstory into one of my (and many others) favourite characters. Let's face it the Ackerman's are the best, even Kenny.

Levi is here and he's ready to rip your face off.

If you want to get to know Levi, this is your story. You like the brooding, goodlooking, slash your pal from the original series? Wanna know how he became a badass Corp Slayer? Well shit, look no further, here's all you need.

I find it interesting it went down the lamer path. I wanted to go deeper into Levi's upbringing instead of giving us a look into the day or two before he joins the corps. He's already cocky, annoyed all the time, perm bitch face set in. However, I do love his two pals, so least they're enjoyable.

I like to see the inner workings of the whole council and how much of a piece of shit they are. There's not much titan slaying here. Actually even the death count is low. So if you're expecting mass deaths not here (save that for part 2...probably...I could only imagine some of these people dying soon)

It's enjoyable little side story. Eager to read part 2. It didn't get me over excited but a solid backstory none the less. A 3/5!

This book was so cool, we learn about Levi, like how he came to be, leading underground missions in stealing with his friend Furlan and Isabel and then joining the survey corps or risk prison, his meeting with Erwin, enlisting in the squad and training and going on expedition outside the walls and his first titan kill. It was cool to see. And his friends are amazing, also some great focus on Erwin as a battle commander and Levi has some great moments and the fight sequences by the artist feels like watching an action anime, its just so well done. And next up: beyond the walls!

I saw this at my local library and I don't think I have ever ripped a book out of a shelf faster.

My glorious and heart-wrenching journey with Attack on Titan started a while ago. I don't really remember exactly. My friend told me about it a couple of months after it came out and I said, "Sure, why not? Titans, sounds exciting. Like, Greek or something."

I hadn't realized it was an anime, but I watched the first episode… and I promptly closed my computer because that was pretty damn terrifying. But I visited it the next year.

So after watching the entire anime series and drowning in my sorrows about the show as a whole, I decided it was time to read where it had all started (not really, see side note). My friend warned me that the artwork was kinda strange, and I looked at it, and I had to agree. But this is a spinoff series drawn by a different artist, and I love it.

This is such a great look back into the history behind one of the series' most beloved characters: Levi. Seriously, what is it about this dude that makes everybody love him? I'm pretty sure he never smiles. Ever. But I really liked this book. The characters really have a complexity to them that wasn't clear in the show, and this just clears so many things up.

Side note: I have never read the original manga series. I haven't gotten around to it.

TL;DR

Very good book, and I highly suggest you read it if you like anything AoT.

*As always, no offense. Just expressing my opinion. Take it as you will.*

4.5 stars.

“I don’t understand. I never have. I trusted in my own strength… I trusted in the decisions of comrades who had earned my faith. But still, no one knew what the result would be.”

If there is one thing that I wanted but thought we would never get, that was Levi's backstory. So, the fact that we actually get two full volumes of it is beyond anything I ever imagined.

First of all, just the world-building of it all is really cool. Through Levi's eyes we can venture into a new side of the familiar world we have explored in the main series so far. Getting to see the underbelly of this already chaotic world was fascinating.

While it would have been hard to maintain Levi as the mysterious character after revealing so much about his past, all the blanks that still exist about his life keep him firmly shrouded in questions and wonder. Just enough that he feels like the same character while being completely reformed.

Then we have the incredible bonus of seeing Levi and Erwin's first meeting, a moment that would turn out to be monumental and fundamental for the rest of the story, and just how vastly different their dynamic was at that point.

Generally speaking, there's just no way that learning more about the vast world of Attack on Titan won't get me excited, so this feels like a treat in every way.

“Are these the wings of revolution? And if they are, how hard will it be to fly on them?”

“So your wings are the real thing, after all, Levi.”

So after like a decade, I finally watched Attack on Titan and am completely in love with Erwin and Levi’s relationship. So naturally I sought out this manga of the “No Regrets” OVA. I am not disappointed. There’s so much here that’s subtle and enlightening about these two men’s relationship and personalities. From Levi’s compassionate, soft heart (personally taking both Furlan and Isabel under his protective wing) to Erwin’s chilling ambition, resourcefulness, and conviction. The art in this is absolutely glorious and expressive. My shipper’s heart is very happy.

Levi te quiero mucho, su historia es tan triste y sigue siendo tan fuerte. El hecho de que nos muestren su pasado y la forma en que se unió a la Legión, sabiendo todo lo que pasa ahí es muy fuerte. En fin, amo este manga.

Story
This is a pretty interesting story giving back story on Levi and Erwin. I guess it's considered canon despite not being written by the original author.

Mr. Snark tells a great story (and has an awesome last name) about one of my favorite characters, and I'm glad I already had volume 2 ready to go so I could jump right into the finale.

If you're not that fortunate however, I will say that it stops in a decent place.

Artwork
Mr. Suruga's artwork is good, and I feel it holds well to the original character designs as done by Mr. Isayama.

His action sequences seem a little better too. Maybe Mr. Isayma can hire him to do the art and just stick to the story now that this series is concluded.

This was perfection. Can I say that I loved the artist in this manga more than the original artist of AOT?

Anyway, this is basically the story of how Erwin and Levi met, and how Levi came to be part of the Survey Corps. I love it, these two are one of my favorite duos, and Levi is one of my favorite characters.
