This kindle book tells the story of Jimmy the bully and how he mistreats a boy named Max. After a few instances of bullying, Max figures out a way to outsmart Jimmy. Max feels depressed about being bullied. One day, to his surprise, Max discovers that many other children in his school are also being bullied by Jimmy. They employ strength in numbers by banding together. Parents and the head teacher are successful in unmasking the bullying behavior and teaching Jimmy a lesson.
Some of the illustrations in this book depict violent bullying behavior like kicking Jimmy's behind and grabbing his shirt. Some reviewers mention using the book with younger children. This book contains some very long sentences with difficult vocabulary that cannot be read independently by children younger than eight or nine. Parents or teachers may need to interpret the meaning of a few of the sentences because there are some errors in grammar.
Nevertheless, the author provides children with a list of do's and don'ts for interacting with bullies and a quiz to test yourself on what you learned from the story. You can download free puzzles and a coloring page that correlate with the theme of the book to reinforce the lessons as well.
There are different forms of bullying, and this author did an excellent job of explaining how kids fall into being victims of bullies. In addition, because the story continues until the reader sees Jimmy's punishment, it is reassuring to kids that there are consequences.
The author offers dos and don'ts for dealing with bullies. Then, there is a quick quiz which is a springboard for parents to discuss these vital problems youngsters are sure to meet.
However, I did not rate this book higher because the author did not use language kids would use. Also, note this example: "They laughed at Jimmy while pointing him (sic) so as to intimidate him." Being rude to Jimmy solves nothing. Allowing the bullied children to heap insults onto Jimmy does not teach kindness and forgiveness.
