If you understand what it's like to be caught up in the trap of binge eating, emotional eating, mindless eating, or the constant loop of dieting and binge eating, then this book is for you. Compulsive eating, then dieting, then cheating on your diet, then bingeing, then starting a new diet again is like being trapped in an undertow. You might feel like you are constantly swimming against the current, only to find yourself exhausted and drowning. This book is your lifeguard. It will help you stop struggling, pull you out of the undertow and help you find peace around food and your body image. Leora Fulvio, a psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of eating disorders has designed this book to be like your own pocket therapist. Each chapter is both an assignment and an exploration that will help you get closer and closer to feeling like yourself again or feeling normal around food for the first time. It will help you to stand up and reclaim yourself against the tyranny of compulsive eating, emotional eating and binge eating.
I strongly encourage anyone who struggles with the role food plays in their life to get a copy of this book. You may not be someone who binge eats, but you might be someone who has spent a lifetime on and off diets, or someone who never feels you are as thin as you could or “should” be, or someone who feels as if your life revolves around food. From the moment I read the first few pages, I felt that I had a companion with me on my journey. The author is understanding, supportive, and encouraging. She gently but firmly helps you explore the tough questions we all need to ask ourselves and gives concrete steps and ideas of how to transform the way you think and behave toward food but, more importantly, toward yourself.
As a clinical social worker, and a Reiki Master, I truly appreciate a holistic approach to any difficulty in life. This author understands the complexities of eating disorders, and presents a step-by-step process to overcome binge eating. The first two sentences of Chapter One describe the book well: "This is not a diet book, nor is this a weight loss book, though weight loss may be an incidental part of the healing process as you let go of binge eating. This is a mind, body and spirit book, that utilizes mindfulness and self-acceptance in order to help you heal on every level."
If you are tired with struggling with binge eating, are serious about healing yourself, and are willing to put in the time and effort to heal this challenging problem, buy this book now! It is the best one I have seen on this topic - ever.
This is a book about love. And compassion. Love for yourself. Love for the author. Compassion for all those struggling with eating disorders. And it goes waaaaay beyond just making you feel good. It is somehow simultaneously a soul-searching, thought-provoking book, as well as a quintessential resource densely peppered with step by step ideas, workbook and journaling opportunities. I read it cover to cover, but you can easily skip around to topics and activities that speak to you. The most refreshing aspect of this book is that somehow, amazingly, beautifully, there is not a single whiff of something pedantic or preachy. Instead, Fulvio writes in essence, an honest letter to, from, and about very real people: fully aware that we stumble, we fail, we pick ourselves up, and then maybe we do it all over again... And we can still love ourselves for that. Her actual approach to treating eating disorders is so downright doable too because you can do just a little bit at a time, or a whole lot if you're ready. And you strongly get the sense that neither way is the "right" way, it's just "my way." That is so empowering. I feel like this is a book that every American woman should read - eating disorder or not. Go love yourself!
"Reclaiming Yourself from Binge Eating: A Step-By-Step Guide to Healing" by Leora Fulvio is the type of book I wished I had years ago when my problem with binge eating was at its peak. The well-written, insightful and informative guide allows people who suffer from binge eating, emotional eating and compulsive eating to take back control in a way that not only improves emotional and physical health, but allows you to really understand yourself and the things you do. What I liked about this guide is that it allows you to delve deeper into the reasons behind binge eating, helps to establish a smarter and healthier outlook, and gives you tools to take that journey step-by-step in a way that doesn't feel oppressive or futile. Ms. Fulvio makes it possible to turn the tide on compulsive eating and make food just another sustenance, instead of a guilty pleasure or an enabler for your emotional/physical problems. Overall, I found the book to be well worth the read and would definitely recommend it to those who want to take back control and move on with their lives in a health way.
Ms. Fulvio has written a very helpful, straightforward, and impassioned guide to healing from binge eating. I say 'impassioned', because she is painfully honest about her own years of struggling with binge eating, and she writes as someone who has walked the walk and has literally devoted her life to helping others to heal. Her treatment is informed not only by her own experience with a devastating disorder, but also by her years of treating patients with eating disorders. Her compassion comes through on every page. I also appreciated her flexible approach to using the book; she provides many exercises and journalling opportunities, but encourages readers to work through the book and the exercises at their own pace, working through the exercises that resonate with them.
If you or a loved one suffers from any eating disorder, whether it be anorexia, bulimia, or in this case binge eating-Leora Fulvio's insightful book is a must read.
The book offers novel long term solutions to change the obsessive and compulsive behavior, that causes one to binge eat in the first place.
Binge eating usually isn't due to simple food cravings, but rather deeply rooted psychological issues,in one's past, that the person may not even be aware of.
Fulvio explores this, as well as some pragmatic solutions such as re-arranging your fridge and cupboards to either putting those particular foods out of plain sight or eliminating buying these foods in the first place.
What I especially liked about the book is that the author doesn't offer a one size fits all solution to this serious eating disorder, but rather many different methods to lessen or eliminate binge eating entirely.
Fantastic book on eating disorders, but not just that!... Most Americans overeat, and, most agree that this is a problem. This is helpful not only for people with binge eating disorders, but for people like me, who simply overeat, then beat themselves up about it. The diet/restriction and binge cycle is a psychological pit of self-loathing and despair. This book shows you how to get out of that trap. I will read this again for sure. It's the "healthiest" way to beat the food problem.
I've found the author's approach quite unscientific and specifc for women. She refers to binge eaters as "she" repeatedly throughout the book, as if it was a women's problem. She also managed to fit in Freud's theories in the first part of the book, which is a no-no for me. I'm leaving it unfinished.
I don't want to hear your troubles, I want you to fix mine. Useless. Also, your description of your binge lifestyle at the beginning inspired me to eat a whole bag of nacho cheese flavored Doritos and drink two bottles of rose wine in succession in bed. Thanks a fucking lot.
